Futsal fever takes over EA Networks CentreAshburton District’s very first Futsal Tournament Extravaganza has been hailed a great success and an inspiring initiative, helping the community to make connections and celebrate diversity.

Organised by New Zealand Football, Ashburton District Welcoming Communities, Immigration New Zealand and Mainland Football, the extravaganza aimed to bring locals and newcomers together for a fun weekend of inclusive activities on 13 and 14 October.

“We are thrilled with how the community got behind this fantastic event. People were striking up new friendships, getting involved and having a

really good time out on the court. It was a great show of community-mindedness and I’d like to thank the organisers, sponsors, volunteers and especially the participants for making Ashburton’s first Futsal Tournament Extravaganza a festival to remember,” Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel says.

The event kicked off with the ‘give it a go’ drop in session on Saturday evening, where participants had the chance to learn about futsal – FIFA’s official five-a-side indoor football – and try out the sport for themselves. A junior skills clinic then ran first thing on Sunday morning, where 60 children practiced football drills directed by Mainland Football players.

process would more likely produce innovative outcomes, rather than merely determining sides.

With less than a year remaining to local government elections, let’s hope our community will have the luxury of selecting from a wide variety of perspectives, and will analyse candidates’ suitability by considering claims and counterclaims.

of lines hanging to below head height, often observed in parts of the Asia-Pacific region. There, road resurfacing often seems to build on top of failing surfaces, and done while still open to traffic.

We do things differently here in Ashburton.

From working with teachers, I took to reflecting on how we use knowledge to form opinions. This is particularly pertinent in an age where some people are claiming ‘alternative facts’ and ‘fake news’.

Councillor CommentThe approach we expect from our students is to understand that there are as many perspectives around an issue as there are people considering it. Each of these perspectives throw up claims and counterclaims, all deserving analysis, before reaching conclusions and forming opinions.

As councillors and lifelong learners, we could improve the quality of decision-making by collectively adopting this approach.

An analysis of any issue using the four ‘well-beings’ – social, cultural, economic and environmental – would produce multiple perspectives, as would active listening to other opinions. A debate based on this

One benefit of travel is being able to observe how other communities approach common problems, seeing if there’s anything we can learn from, and comparing how we stack up.

In Bangkok, for example, I noted that, by comparison, Ashburton District’s footpaths are wide, unobstructed and relatively easily negotiated.

"Not all of the kids who took part in the junior skills clinic were signed up for the age group tournament, but after the clinic, some of these kids enjoyed it so much, they asked to enter a team. We were able to do this but joining our newcomer families with some of the local kids who also wanted to play.

“A few of the families even returned to watch the celebrity match at the end of the day– they were just so happy to be involved. We’re very proud that the tournament helped foster new connections and build friendships,” she added.

The final activity of the weekend, the celebrity match, saw a number of locals battle it out with professional footballers. They joined eight Canterbury Dragons football players (including two international Futsal Whites players) for a hard-fought match, ending in a penalty shoot-out. The final score was a draw, 5-5.

Amongst the celebrity teams were MP for Rangitata, Andrew Falloon; Ashburton Mayor, Donna Favel; Councillor Leen Braam; Mel Perriton from Hokonui FM; Ashburton District Council Chief Executive, Hamish Riach; Tony McNeill from Immigration NZ; Ashburton College Head Girl and Boy, Connie Davidson and

Caleb Livingstone; Ashburton Youth Council Co-Chair, Artem Kravchenko; Presbyterian Support Health Worker, Torika Paterson; NZ secondary school cross country champion, Taonga Mbambo; Mid Canterbury Rugby Team Captain, Jackson Donal; Mid Canterbury Rugby player and former international representative for Samoan Football, Kenny Faalavau; EA Networks Centre Assistant Manager, Richard Wood; and Ashburton District Council Emergency Management Officer, James Lamb.

Ilana added, “The event would not have been possible without the involvement of our local sponsors who understood the intent of the

weekend and the importance of fostering a welcoming community. We’d like to thank Talleys Group Ashburton, ACL, Community and Public Health, Russell Moon and Fail Lawyers, Farmers Ashburton, Mitre 10 Mega Ashburton, Frontrunner Ashburton, Subway Ashburton, EA Networks Centre, Rural Canterbury Primary Health Organisation and Nelson Building Society.

“Thank you also to the community and business volunteers. This event was a wonderful way to build awareness about the Welcoming Communities programme and celebrate our community’s ongoing changing diversity.”

Big appetite for Bite Nite see’s record donationsThe Ashburton Youth Council are thanking the community for their outstanding support of the Bite Nite 2.0 community event, which saw $1,000 raised for the Mid Canterbury Boxing Academy.

.The food and entertainment festival lit up Baring Square East on 26 September with food trucks, live performances and games. With collection buckets making their rounds at the event, attendees dug deep to donate $696.10, and a further generous donation after the night of $303.90 brought the total figure to $1,000 – a figure which exceeded last year’s donations.

“We are extremely proud to have been able to put the event on again this year. People were really enjoying the food on offer and the performances from Jack Bubb, Little Einsteins, Liam Pram and Jamie McDell were amazing,” Ashburton Youth Council Co-Chair Tom Collis said.

“We’re very grateful to the community for coming out and supporting this event, and giving very generously to the Mid Canterbury Boxing Academy. It’s such an honour to have been able to help raise money for this fantastic organisation.”

Artem Kravchenko, the Youth Council’s fellow Co-Chair, added, “Initiatives like this don’t just

happen - they take a lot of support and organisation. Bite Nite 2.0 would not have been possible without the Ashburton District Council, who generously provided funding for the event; More FM for organising advertising sponsorship and being MC on the night; Kennards Hire Ashburton; KFC Ashburton and Subway Ashburton for donating gift vouchers to give away; and our generous radio advertising sponsors, EA Networks, Cleavers Corner Gastro Pub and Real Estate New Zealand.

“We’d also like to give a big thank you to the people from the Mid Canterbury Boxing Academy for helping us to set up and pack away on the day, and to the people who came along and helped make our second Bite Nite

event another great success.”

Around 300 people are estimated to have attended Bite Nite 2.0. The local live performances kept the crowd entertained well into the evening, before Kiwi singing sensation, Jamie McDell and her band took to the stage with some of her classics and to wrap up the festivities.

The Youth Council’s inaugural Bite Nite event in 2017 raised $635.00 for 24/7 Youth Work.

The Ashburton Youth Council will present the proceeds from this year’s Bite Nite to the Mid Canterbury Boxing Academy at their next Youth Council Meeting.

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS / PROPERTY REVALUATIONS / ASHBURTON MUSEUM SUFFRAGE 125 / BUILDING AN EFFECTIVE WORKPLACE CULTURE SEMINAR

School kids design modern take on Suffrage 125The Ashburton Museum’s Suffrage 125 exhibition, celebrating and showcasing the 125th anniversary of women gaining in the vote in New Zealand, has had a special enhancement, courtesy of Ashburton Intermediate School students.

The 8/2 class of 31 students got to share their interpretation of the important milestone, and have had their contributions displayed in the Museum’s exhibition.

The collaboration came about after the students began working on an ‘Are we there yet’ learning programme and came to the Museum to check out the Suffrage 125 exhibition.

“We’d only planned to visit and check out the Museum’s exhibition, but were then given the opportunity to contribute, which was fantastic,” 8/2 teacher Jade Tonks said.

Museum Director Tanya Robinson said, “We asked them, ‘what do you think is missing?’, and they went away and developed these amazing creations."

Included in the students’ contributions

were an equal pay petition that museum visitors can sign; a re-enactment of Kate Sheppard; a questionnaire and a visual comparison of what adults, 12-13 year-olds, and five-year-olds think of gender and job roles. This particular piece asked participants to draw someone in a profession, such as a builder, prime minister or scientist, but they weren't told what the person's gender was. It was designed to see if there is a gender bias between people of different ages.

The 8/2 and 7/1 classes were invited back to the Museum on 29 September to see their works on show in the exhibit.

Student, Reilly Campbell said his class had been working hard on their pieces for two weeks, and they were excited to see their efforts on display.

Property owners in the Ashburton District have until 1 November to contact Quotable Value if they believe the new valuation of their property is incorrect.

Quotable Value is carrying out work on behalf of Ashburton District Council to revalue properties in the district. The mandatory exercise, which happens every three years involves conducting a mass appraisal of properties in the district to work out property rates.

The new valuations were sent to property owners in late September, and an objections period to contest that value is open until 1 November.

Objections can be lodged if owners believe that the new value is incorrect, but not because of the effect that it has on their rates.

For more information on property valuations or to make an objection, visit ashburtondc.govt.nz

People in the Ashburton District were encouraged to share inspiring messages and experience the positive effect of physical activity during this year’s national Mental Health Awareness Week (8-13 October).

The Council put its support behind the national campaign to help raise awareness and break the stigma surrounding mental health. Visitors to the EA Networks Centre were invited to share positive messages on an Inspiration Wall installation at the Centre, and participate in a free Body Balance/Stretch class in Baring Square West.

Staff in the Council Administration Building, EA Networks Centre, Ashburton Library and Museum also wore bright lime-coloured T-shirts throughout the week to help raise awareness.

Council People & Capability

Manager Sarah Mosley said, “The Council was pleased to play its part in promoting mental health this year, and we appreciate the staff who worked hard to organise our activities. It’s an issue that touches many lives and, as a community, we all need to work together in looking out for one another."

Mental Health Awareness Week (8 October – 13 October) is a national campaign run by the Mental Health Foundation, and aims to raise awareness of mental health

and mental health problems. The theme for this year’s Mental Health Awareness campaign was 'Let nature in, strengthen your wellbeing - Mā te taiao, kia whakapakari tōu oranga!'

It was designed to remind people how nature can grow, support and nurture our wellbeing by applying the Five Ways to Wellbeing to your everyday life: Connect, Give, Be Active, Take Notice and Keep Learning.
