Booker researches former school for African-American femalesby Martha Rose Brown

The impact of an elite private school for young African-Amer-ican women was the focus of a Women’s History Month program at Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College on March 8.

Dr. Jackie R. Booker, formerly of Tryon, an associate professor of history at Winston-Salem State University, shared information about his ongoing research project titled, “For Colored Girls: A His-tory of Allen High School in Ashe-ville, North Carolina, 1887-1974.”

Booker said a year ago while completing research about Nina Simone, an American singer, songwriter, pianist and civil rights activist born in Tryon, he learned she was a graduate of Allen High School (AHS) and decided to re-search the history of the school. He said he hopes to eventually publish a book about it.

In the school’s early days, the Bible served as its only textbook and just a few of its students had access to individual desk slate-boards, Booker said.

The school got its start on Oct. 31, 1887, thanks to Chris-tian missionaries from the north, specifically Lewis Peace and his wife. Only three students showed up for class the first day, Booker said.

By word of mouth, the school in its first month grew from three to 200 students, most of whom were young girls. At that time, the student population was co-ed, and whites served as teachers and administrators. The school even-tually began serving only female students ages 12 to 18.

Booker said it didn’t take long for the founders to realize the need for an on-campus dormitory for the young women. Some of them walked more than two miles to school each day, he said.

Booker said it wasn’t until the 1930s that the school began employing black teachers.

According to Booker, in the 1930s, AHS’s leadership chose a more “liberal arts curriculum,” as supported by African-American educator Dr. W.E.B. DuBois. Dr. Booker T. Washington of Tuskegee University supported “industrial education,” Booker said. The two educators had their share of supporters and critics alike, he said.

Secondary and post-secondary education institutions typically chose one or the other types of curricula. Booker said it was also during that time that Allen High sought accreditation by the state

of North Carolina and the South-ern Association of Colleges and Schools.

By 1942, “Allen was one of the few black high schools that had both state and SACS accredita-tion,” he said.

The school closed in 1974 because of funding cuts and the impacts of school integration,

Booker said. Simone, perhaps Al-len High’s most famous alumna, graduated in 1950 with a 3.99 grade point average.

Most of the school’s gradu-ates completed college and went on to have careers in liberal arts occupations such as teaching, Booker said.

“This is a story that needs to be told,” OCtech Librarian Har-ris Murray said after Booker’s presentation.

Tryon Country Club flagpole gets makeover to honor vetsby Samantha Hurst

A new bronze eagle graces the top of the flagpole at Tryon Country Club.

The replacement of an “old unattractive” pole topper might not seem like a big event to most, but to the management and mem-bers of TCC the meaning runs deeper than a small makeover for the club’s entrance.

The bronze eagle and coor-dinating plaque at the foot of the pole was purchased and pre-sented by John Albree, a retired colonel and current member of TCC.

“The retired military has steep history in the club,” said grounds superintendent Fred Edwards Jr. “Col. Albree, he’s the kind of member the club was made out of.”

Albree said he felt like it was

“It’s a labor of love and it’s in memory of so many people that are gone now,” he said. “It stands for a lot of people that gave a lot of time to this country.”

Albree said he purchased a new flag to fly over the club as well.

John Douglas has been far more than the custodian of our church building. his gifts of loving service to God and our church have made him more than just an employee. he is a trusted friend and colleague whose faith and counsel have

been both a comfort and inspiration to me and our entire staff. We are going to miss him terribly in ways we cannot yet begin to imagine. When we as human beings choose to live into the gifts God has given to us and use them honorably according to God’s will and to his glory, nothing we do is menial or of little value. When we give of our gifts generously and respect the gifts of others as equal to our own we can celebrate not only the work we do but see God’s hand in the good work of others and celebrate with them. John, keep us in your prayers, my brother. We will certainly need them.

Local artists receive grants from Upstairs Artspace

Five area artists, Celia Gray, Liisa Jasinski, Janet Orselli and Ford and Mara Smith were hon-ored with artist’s grants during the Upstairs Artspace Annual Meeting in Tryon on Monday, Feb. 28.

The Upstairs Artspace Artists Grant Program was established last year to provide modest fi-nancial support to visual artists who have exhibited at the Up-stairs since its founding in 1978. The purpose of the program is to help artists grow and develop professionally. Recipients were chosen by a selection committee in December, using specified guidelines to evaluate the merits of all submitted applications.

Asheville resident Celia Gray plans to use her grant award to introduce monoprint and silkscreen into her current encaustic painting process. Her plan is to add pattern and imag-ery to upcoming projects, using printmaking techniques.

Liisa Jasinski of Newberry, S.C., will use her grant stipend to purchase supplies including copper foil acrylic paints, digital image transfers, linen, gels, oil

paints and silver leaf for a new body of mixed media work.

Janet Orselli, a Columbus artist, plans to create large numbers of “Heartsoles” from old shoe soles, shoestrings and felt. These “Heartsoles” will be partially funded by her grant award and will become part of a large installation, which will be exhibited in a number of venues around the Southeast.

Well-known Tryon artists Ford and Mara Smith applied for their grant in order to help fund their planned long-term project of interviewing and photographing 40 to 50 working Polk County artists and crafts-men. The Smiths plan to turn the project into a major exhibit.

Funds for the Upstairs Art-space Artists Grant Program come from a percentage of annual membership revenues. In that way, those who become members of the Upstairs Art-space are helping support the non-profit Upstairs Artspace, as well as the very artists whose works are on display in the gal-lery throughout the year.

Letter to the Editor

Farewell Tryon To the Editor: In spring of 2004, my wife

Blair and I moved to Tryon. Thus began seven years of our lives that were nothing short of delightful.

Over those years, we met and interacted with artists, writ-ers, performers, entrepreneurs,

Letter to the Editor

Love even those who disagree religiously

To the Editor: In a recent editon of the

Bulletin, a gentleman gave us four quotes--which I have seen before on the Internet--of dubious authenticity, purport-ing to show that all Muslims were an avowed enemy of all non-Muslims.

Although we are not told who translated these cherry-picked, out-of-context quotes, nor from where the gentle-man procured these quotes, we are nevertheless presumably expected to accept them as representative of the beliefs of all Muslims.

My own personal experi-ence has taught me that not

all members of any particular religious, or ethnic, group are monolithic in attitude towards other groups.

Furthermore, It is my under-standing that a person wishing to defame Chrisitianity could quite easily cherry-pick four verses from the King James version of the Bible--which, after all, is a 17th Century English translation of first and second century Greek, from pre-Christian era Aramaic and Hebrew--to show supposed Christian animosity towards all other religions.

In fact, the Christian reli-gion, as we all should know, along with other major world religions, teaches its members to do unto others as they would be done by; and to love their neighbors as themselves. As far as I am aware, we are not taught to love only those who agree with us in every aspect of life.

––Bill Holcomb

tradesmen, shopkeepers, city officials and countless others who rank among the friendliest, most thoughtful folks we have ever known.

Taking our leave now, it seems entirely appropriate to extend our best wishes to the town and its residents. This place really is nearly perfect.

Thank you all for your kind-nesses and friendship.

––Bill Martin

Brooks has played in the Hendersonville community band and the all-district band for four years and has attended the Cannon Music Camp for four summers. He was previously a first place winner in 2010.

Two students tied for second place awards: Elizabeth Sha-nahan and Todd Elliott. Sha-nahan played flute and sang as part of her audition; she is a resident of Columbus and a student a t P C H S , where she has par t ic ipated in the concert and marching bands, as well as the all-dis-trict band and the Limestone College honors band.

A panel of judges evaluates each student, par-ticularly noting the performer’s musical interpretation and technical proficiency. The fi-nancial award can be applied to the cost of lessons, purchase of music, or repair/purchase of instruments. In 2011, a total of $1,700 is being awarded.

The Foothills Music Club is an affiliate of the Tryon Fine Arts Center and has a member-ship of persons dedicated to sustaining and enriching their own musical talents, whether vocal or instrumental, through solo and/or ensemble perfor-mances. Support for student musical talent has been on-going since the beginning of the FMC in 1988. To date, a total of more than $32,000 has been awarded to young musi-cians in the area.

Carolina Camera Club meets Jan. 11The next meeting of the Caro-

lina Camera Club will be on Tuesday, Jan. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the Isothermal Community Col-lege in Columbus.

Join the club for a presentation titled “Digital After Dark” pre-sented by Kevin Adams. Adams has been teaching and leading photo tours in North Carolina since the early 1990s and has produced several books that have become valuable tools to many local photographers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Today’s digital cameras give us the ability to make images that we could not have dreamed of back in the film days. Nowhere is this truer than with night pho-

tography. Now we can literally shoot for the stars.

For those who associate night photography only with subjects like fireworks, cityscapes, and street scenes, you’re in for a surprise. In this eye-opening presentation, Kevin will share his techniques for photographing a variety of nighttime subjects, from the ordinary to the “Wow, I never would have thought of that!”

Attendees are advised to use caution before attending this presentation, however. Once you see all the exciting things you can do with your camera at night, you might be losing a lot of sleep from then on.

After 12 years of service to local communities, including Polk County, Access II Care of Western North Carolina an-nounces that it has changed the agency name from Access II Care of Western North Caro-lina to Community Care of Western North Carolina.

“While the precise details of how health care will look in 5 or 10 years remain elusive,” agen-cy officials said. “It is clear we are entering an era of greater collective accountability for the quality and cost-effectiveness of health care delivery.”

Along with the new name, you’ll notice a new logo and color scheme changing soon on all mailings, promotional materials and other communi-cations.

Although the group looks different, it is still the same local community-based net-

work of physicians and health care providers committed to providing the highest quality of medical care for the Med-icaid, Medicare and uninsured populations of Western North Carolina.

Community Care’s goal is to increase access to care for Medicaid and low-income, uninsured residents of Polk County.

Over the past 12 years, CC-WNC has worked with Med-icaid recipients, uninsured residents and local primary care providers to provide targeted case management services that will improve quality of care while containing costs.

These services include, but are not limited to, disease man-agement education and follow-up, helping patients coordinate their care or access needed services and collecting data on

A p p r o x i -m a t e l y 1 , 0 0 0 residents have benefited from a county wide co l l abo ra t i on focused on pro-viding medical and dental assistance to low income uninsured residents.

This year, another $100,000 has been distributed to commu-nity partners to continue access to care services to the residents of Polk County.

Letter to the Editor

Stay out of our community

To the Editor: I am angry about the number

of burglaries in our area. While the sheriff and the com-

missioner are arguing over pay-ing deputies, thieves are stealing anything not nailed down and property that does not belong to them! When I moved to Polk County over six years ago it was touted as the safest place to live in the state. I know economic timesaredifficultnow.Weareacommunity of honest law abid-ing citizens. Our property is not yours for the taking. I hope these dishonest low life thieves can read; because I am saying; “stay out of our community.” We are now on to you and are now pre-pared for your next adventure into our once safe community.

PCHS FFA begins plant sale set for April 9

The FENCE Spring Horse Trials will be held April 2 - 3 at the Foothills Equestrian Nature Center.

More than 100 horses are already entered to compete for prizes across four levels and multiple divisions.

The public is welcome to come out and see riders com-pete in dressage, stadium jump-ing and cross-country.

The score of the three tests for each horse and rider com-bination is combined with the lowest “penalty” score winning their division.

Spectators are welcome at no charge to watch dressage and stadium on Saturday and cross-country on Sunday.

Combined training or event-ing, as it is commonly known,

is just what its name suggests – it is similar to a humans-only triathlon. Combined training requires horse and rider to com-pete in three different competi-tive areas – dressage, stadium jumping and cross-country.

Each of these disciplines puts emphasis on different aspects of riding but, taken together, they ultimately produce a versatile and well-rounded team.

Because combined train-ing is particularly challenging for a horse, these types of competition are sometimes referred to as “horse trials.” At the top levels of competition, a combined training event usu-ally takes place over three days, one day for each discipline, which is why you’ll sometimes hear a combined training event

referred to as “a three-day.” At lower levels - with shorter

and less difficult cross-country courses, more basic level dres-sage tests, and simpler jumper courses - a combined training event can be held over just two days.As might be imagined, these multi-day events with three different areas of activity require an enormous number of volunteers.

Riding experience or knowl-edge of horses is not required for many volunteer positions.
