MANAGER’S MESSAGEElectronic communications to the Membership are nowmore numerous than ever before. The following recapshow we are keeping the Membership informed of thevarious Club activities.

• Member StatementsStatements are updated daily, providing members the ability to view their charges at any time.

• On-Line Auto PayThis feature provides the conveniences of paying your statement online, automatically eachmonth.

• Membership DirectorySince opting to go paperless several years ago, the Membership Directory is also included onthe website under the Quick Links menu. Periodically, it is recommended that each Memberupdate their information to confirm that it is current.

Monthly LakewooderEach month you will receive an email with the Lakewooder attached in a PDF file. AllLakewooders are archived on the website. (The months of July and August are combined intoone issue).

ForeTees (web.foretees.com/lakewoodccdallas)Recently, this on line tee time reservation system was adopted and has quickly been gaining inpopularity amongst the Membership.

• Tee times can be made for the weekend beginning at 8:00 am on Thursday mornings.

•Members can also sign up for tournaments on the ForeTees website.

Weekly Golf Updates “Tee Off From Your Inbox”Every Thursday Gilbert Freeman emails a comprehensive Golf Activity Update. Tournamentdates, individual accomplishments, golf tips, and the latest in equipment and apparel are theprimary subject matters.

• This weekly update is emailed to the Golfing Membership.

• It is also available through the Club’s main website under the Golf Menu Bar.

Weekly Tennis Update “Adrien’s Weekly Tennis Bulletin”Each week Adrien emails an update, very similar to Gilbert’s Golf Update. This email is trans-mitted to all the Tennis eligible Membership. It is also accessible through the main website, under the Tennis section. Additionally, you will receive information emailed out to the entiremembership on an as needed basis.

Hopefully you are staying fully informed in a timely manner of all Club activities.

With much anticipation, were are all looking forward to the completion of the ongoingClubhouse renovations scheduled for this May. As you know, the last areas are the GardenRoom and adjoining Terrace overlooking the 18th green. These areas promise to add tremen-dous aesthetic appeal to your Clubhouse. In particular, the opportunities to host private func-tions in some very attractive spaces will be greater than ever. Whether it is a graduation cele-bration, birthday dinner, business event, rehearsal dinner or a wedding reception, we hope youwill support your Club by calling Sheila, our Special Events Coordinator.

As always, we look forward to seeing you at the Club.

TOWN HALL MEETING Tuesday, March 5th at 6pm ~ Ballroom

SHAREHOLDER MEETING AND VOTEWednesday, March 27th at 6pm ~ Ballroom

CLUBHOUSE CORNERWhen you read this, the Grill Room remodeling should be finished, and hopefullysomewhat of a sense of normalcy has returned. Again, thank you for your patience andamazing support and participation during construction times. The next phase will bethe Garden Room and Family Terrace, which we hope will be completed in May.

This year Easter is in March and, although it is at the end of the month, we are alreadyworking on the details. This year, because we will not have the Garden Room for seat-ing, we will make use our newly remodeled Formal Entrance and build the buffet in thatspace. Of course this means the Formal Entrance will not be available for access. ValetParking will be set up at the Informal Entrance. Also, please note that the Children’sEvent has moved to a new time. It is now Breakfast with the Easter Bunny and EasterEgg Hunt. The Easter Sunday Brunch will remain the same as in years past.

Wine enthusiasts, mark your calendar for March 23rd! We will have a Wine Socialexploring the region of Burgundy. Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs will be paired with anarray of small plates created by Chef William Koval.

Speaking of Pinot Noir, here is one I found that is very pleasing:

FEATURED NEW WINE FOR MARCHGenot-Boulanger 1er Cru Mercurey, 2009

The Genot Boulanger Mercurey 09 is a spectacular example of Red Burgundy with justenough red plum and currants to remain fruity while having that wonderful terroir driv-en finish that lingers on the palate for an extended period of time.

SOMETHING NEWThe Ladies’ Card Room is now open and staffed Wednesday, Thursday and Fridayevenings from 3:00pm – 8:30pm.

Finally, as always, let me know, if there is anything I can do to enhance your Club expe-rience. I can be reached at 214.821.1491 ext. 203 or [email protected].

Marcel Berlioux, CCMClubhouse Manager

Last month I mentioned a food service issue that was discussed in the last HouseCommittee meeting. Indeed, as you may have experienced it yourself on Thursdayand Friday nights, food service can sometimes be slow. At the meeting this month,a long discussion took place after it was explained that many Members were mak-ing reservations for large groups in the Mixed Grill Room and the Wine Room.Although it is a good thing to be busy, large groups ordering off the menu lunch ordinner selections are creating service issues for the rest of the Membership. BecauseLakewood Country Club cooks everything from scratch, plating small tables can bedone efficiently, while plating large tables uses lots of space and time. This resultsin many Members, seated after large tables, receiving slower service. Many opin-ions were expressed, and the idea of limiting the size of groups to ten (10) for order-ing off of the menu is now being implemented. Parties larger than ten (10) adultswill be offered a limited menu and possibly a private room.

FROM THE COURTSDear Tennis Players and fans,

Well it looks like winter is just about over. We’re happy to announce the courts are ready! Despitea lot of cold and wet weather, the crew got it done just in the nick of time for our busy season ofinter-club matches (Metro, TCDwomen’s and mixed doubles)!

A perennial reminder for ourplayers and guests: please help uskeep our new-looking courtslooking great by wearing non-marking shoes. Due to the lateralmovements in tennis, runningshoes are not only dangerous foryour ankles, but they also markup the courts. Thank you!

FACILITY NOTES

The surface and the lines lookgreat. We’ve had some problemswith our excellent new lighting system. The manufacturer has had to replace quite a few bulbs overthe past two years. They are about to replace ballasts now, as well, so please be aware there’s still alittle construction to work around during the off-peak times over the coming week or two.

Our awnings are scheduled to be ‘reupholstered’ in March, likely over spring break, just in time toprovide some good shade in the warm spring weather to come.

SHOP NOTES

The new line of 2013 shoes is here! Babolat’s new shoes feature awesome new graphics and colorswhile ‘Getting you Faster To The ball’ as their tagline says. Georgi, Greg, Ed and I are already sport-ing them and we all love ‘em. Come by and grab a pair! Prices range from $89 to $109. Our 2012models are all on sale, too, ranging from $60 to $80 per pair!

We’ll see you on the (6) courts!

FROM THE FAIRWAYSThis month is my second article of what I hope to be a series of severalarticles. They will be based on my memories and recollections of pastevents that have occurred during my employment atLakewood Country Club. Since starting in 1987, Icertainly have many memories during the twenty-fiveplus years that I hope are worth sharing.

This past summer’s hailstorm was a weather eventthat probably occurs only once in a lifetime in thisparticular area of the country. There were so manygood neighbors, friends, members, fellow superintend-ents, and salesmen, etc. that came and helped us. Itwas amazing! I also realize now that I have beengiven more than what I have given. I now hope togive back more to fellow superintendents in the futureif they need help. I should have realized this nearlytwenty-five year’s ago after another weather event. We had quite a thunderstorm on Sunday, July 2, 1989that produced strong straight-line winds. The treedamage was extensive and the clean up took days.Well, even then my fellow superintendents came overto help. Included with my article is a piece from a col-umn that Harless Wade had written for the DallasMorning News. It mentioned Ken Small of RoyalOaks helping out. After the hailstorm, I again calledon Ken Small who is now at Brook Hollow Golf Clubfor a second opinion on opening the course. He hasalways been a great friend that I can call on anytime.

My memories of the windstorm are many and theyreally stand out in my mind more than some otherstorms that have occurred since. It looked like a tor-nado had hit the area, but there were none confirmed. There was no major structural damage, but I remem-ber some brick walls toppled over and some light polesbent over. The day after the storm, all the news hel-icopters were in the area. To me there was an eeriefeeling to it. The north side of La Vista or the club-house side had less debris to clean up due to smallertrees then the mostly native pecans along the creekson the south side of La Vista. So, we worked mostlythirteen-hour days that first week and got the northside opened up by Thursday, July 6. We finally openedthe entire course on Wednesday, July 12. (That wasten days). We were open for play, but the course stillwasn’t back to normal. We had help from RoyalOaks. We hired contract laborers. Dallas AthleticClub loaned us a brush chipper. We had two or threeon-the-job chainsaw accidents probably due tofatigue. I dismissed a few employees and hired a fewnew employees. Obviously, a busy summer.

After the “passing of the storm”, the sentiment ofmost members was that it probably helped the course. It would be more playable where trees had become“too tight”. We also would probably grow more grassin the roughs due to less shady conditions. The coursehad weathered another storm.

Friends chip induring cleanupat Lakewood

During a time whendrugs, crime and vio-lence are stealing ourheadlines, goodSamaritans don’t seemto come along toooften to enlighten ourlives.

But the recent stormthat played havoc atLakewood CountryClub produced morethan one candidate foranyone’s “Good Guyof the Year Award.’ Ifyou don’t believe it,

talk to retired Dallas banker Ed Bentley, theclub’s greens and grounds chairman.

Early in the morning after 100-mph windsdestroyed or severely damaged more than 100huge trees, Lakewood grounds chief MikePlummer called Royal Oaks ground superin-tendent Ken Small to ask if he might borrow acouple of chainsaws to help in the massivecleanup he faced.

Small more than responded affirmative.“Need help? We’ll be right over,’ he toldPlummer.

Enter Bentley, also on the scene. “Would youbelieve that Small loaded up a 19-man crew outof Royal Oaks and had them at Lakewood with-in 25 minutes?’ asked the greens chairman. !“They worked 13 hours one day and 16 hoursthe next.’ Enter two other superintendents,Dallas Athletic Club’s Clyde Nettles andColumbian Club’s Mark Gooch.

“I’m going around the course surveying thedamage when I see Nettles and Gooch syringinga green,’ said Bentley. “They came over, sawthe greens needed some help and immediatelywent to work on them. Now, that’s what youcall good neighbors. It warms one’s heart toknow we still have people like this.’

Bentley, too, joined the good Samaritanranks. It seems the Royal Oaks workers lefttheir home base so quick they forgot their lunchbags. Bentley paraded them into the Lakewoodclubhouse and sent them through the club’s buf-fet lunch.

Obviously, the Lakewood membership owesSmall, Nettles, Gooch, Plummer and Bentley aroyal vote of thanks.
