The St. Francis of Assisi community is a welcoming Christian family. We believe in Jesus Christ and are guided by the Holy Spirit and the example of St. Francis. We gather to celebrate, to grow in the knowledge of our faith rooted in the Catholic tradition, and to recognize our responsibility to reach out to the world.

Pastor’s Reflections

Dear Sisters and Brothers, At the Center of today’s Gospel is the Line: “Now the hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.” At one time or another, we all harbor a secret dream of glory. Partly this is healthy, a sign that we are emo-tionally well. But sometimes there is a tension with what the world con-siders “Glory” and what Jesus considered Glory – well, actually more that sometimes. These are some of the people in our world who receive glory and re-nown and fame and publicity: - pop stars, sport stars, successful busi-ness people, company directors, billionaires. Are they the really im-portant people in our world? The first of Jesus’ signs in the Gospel of John took place at the Wed-ding in Cana. In that story Jesus said that his hour had not yet come. But in today’s passage, he says “Now the hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.” What is this hour of glory for Jesus? It is his passion and death. Why is this so? “When he is lifted up from the earth he will draw all People to himself.” Jesus’ glory is not what the world thinks glorious because the world does not see as God sees. Jesus defines glory very differently than we do. Real glory for him, is not the glory of being a champion, of winning an Oscar, or of being an object of envy because of our looks or our wealth. Glory consists in being deep in compassion, forgiveness, and graciousness. There are many people who are not famous; they are people caring for sick relatives, people suffering crosses without grumbling, those giving encouragement to others, those who bring the love of God to others, those who witness to Jesus in small ways. Are they the really great people in our world? I think they are. Think of a pop song or a great goal scored during a championship or a successful business deal. It will not last into eternity. Think of an act of kindness to someone in need; that will last into eternity. That needs to be our focus as we continue to move toward Jerusalem – to the washing of feet on Holy Thursday – to the Lifting up of the Cross on Good Friday – to the triumph of Easter!

Adult Faith Formation AROUND FOR AWHILE By, Fr. Ed Upton

For the last few weeks, I have outlined some of the foundational elements that were necessary to establish our new regional school. This work was a challenge because no new regional school had been established in the previous 30 years. I no longer remember the precise time line of these events. The early planning took place before the es-tablishment of St. Stephen and during the last months of Cardinal Bernardin’s leadership. Final decisions were put on hold in the last months before his death. After Cardinal Ber-nardin’s death, it was not clear if the new Archbish-op was open to continuing this new school. Soon after Archbishop George’s arrival, the early fall of 1997, over dinner at the St. Francis Rectory, Fr. O’Mara, Fr. Homa and I met with the new Arch-bishop. We described the history of the project, mak-ing clear this project be-gan at the request of Car-dinal Bernardin. We out-lined all the planning that had been taken place. He was supportive. We made an additional request. We asked that the school be named after Cardinal Bernardin, since he was instrumental in establishing this new

school. He agreed. But asked that while the school could be named the Cardinal Joseph Bernardin School, he

wanted it placed under the patron-age of St. Joseph. And so it was.

He was pleased with the planning that had been done. That night, in addi-tion to organization, dis-cussed a basic under-standing of a Catholic School. It was the pas-tors’ understanding and one that the Cardinal supported, that a Catholic School is not an inde-pendent entity, but rather serves the mission and ministry of the parish. A parish has the respon-sibility to pass on the faith to the next generation. While this is chiefly the parent’s responsibility, a school (or religious edu-cation) works with them. The center of a parish is the Eucharist. Each Sun-day the community gath-ers to be nourished by Gods’ Word and the Eu-charist and then is sent forth to be disciples. It is through this participation and education that chil-dren are brought into this community of faith.

The challenge today is that many families do not

see this relationship. Un-fortunately, only a minority of parents with children in a Catholic School today attend Sunday Mass on a regular basis. (And this same fact applies to fami-lies in Religious Educa-tion.)

This lack of Sunday Mass participation is a challenge in the United States. There are many reasons for this lack of Mass partic-ipation. For some, partici-pation in Sunday sched-uled sports and children activities takes priority. For others, it is an individu-al understanding of faith. They say, I have my per-sonal connection with the Lord, and so find the com-munity gathering not need-ed. Others, simply have grown careless and Sun-day mass has just dropped from their radar. Others are angry, confused about faith and other contributing reasons. This dichotomy between school and church is frus-trating. Over the years, parishes have tried many avenues to encourage and foster this connection. Un-fortunately, for many the school stands as a suffi-cient means to live the Catholic faith. The Cardinal gave his blessings and encouraged us in this new mission.

MINISTRY MOMENTS THIS WEEK: Ann Carroll

Throughout 2018, this page will include reflections from staff and parishioners high-lighting their ministry involve-ment.

Hi! I’m Ann Carroll, a re-ceptionist at St. Francis and grateful to Father Ar-tur for providing the oppor-tunity to be a part of the SFA staff. My husband Bill and I have been parishion-ers since 1995. We have two adult children. John is 36 and Caitlin is 34; and a grand dog, Bailey the Box-er. We were originally parish-ioners of St. Walter and lived in Blue Island. When we moved to Orland Park, we thought we made a terrible mistake. Our fears were quickly diminished through a sense of wel-coming and belonging we felt when we joined St. Francis of Assisi Parish and encouraged by Father Upton to become involved. I joined the Helping Hands Committee after listening to a friend, Linda Higgins mention the many projects involving the HHC. The next thing I knew, via a

telephone call from Sister Bernard Lynch, I, along with Roxanne Zoladz, became the co-chairs of the Helping Hands Com-mittee. The Helping Hands Com-mittee projects include: Coat Drive, Blood Drive, Food Drive(s), Christmas Outreach, Courage Baby Shower, Easter Basket Project, and Baby Bottle Project. We also serve dinners at the Bishop Goedert Residence (senior citizen housing sponsored by Catholic Charities) and collect: baby coupons for the Courage Program, Pro-ject Linus Blankets, toilet-

ries for Ronald McDonald House Charities and box tops for Cardinal Joseph Bernardin School. The mission of the com-mittee is to “follow the example of Christ, who gave his life in the service of others.” Members are individuals with kind and generous hearts, who continually respond YES to our plea to chair, help with a project and through example, live their faith on a daily basis. I would en-courage you to get in-volved, share your God-given talents, and be of service.

SAVED BY GOD’S LOVE Copyright (c) J.S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Because the people broke the old covenant, God promised a new covenant, not in the blood of oxen and other animals, but in the blood of the Son, Jesus Christ. This new covenant, fore-seen from afar by Jere-miah and the prophets, was not to be engraved on stone, or written on paper, but carved on our hearts, so that we might know God intimately. Not by keeping many laws are we to be saved, but by the love of God, living and real in our hearts through the sacri-fice of Christ.

Our Eucharist is the pledge of that indwelling of Christ, and of our re-sponse of praise and thanksgiving to God for the mercy, love, and kind-ness shown to us in for-giving our sins and cleansing our hearts of everything evil. God issues this invitation to intimacy by offering us the chance to have our sufferings transformed into the perfect love of the Savior, who first loved us.

Vicariate V Ministry Commission Sponsors MORNING OF REFLECTION FOR

MINISTERS OF CARE

St. Gerald Parish, Arnold Hall 9310 S. 55th Ct. in Oak Lawn, IL 60453

708-422-0234 ext. 32 Saturday, March 24, 2018 from 9 am to 12 pm

This workshop will be facilitated by Sr. Jane Schlosser. Those who minister to the sick and dying need time to care for themselves as well. Promoted by our Late Cardinal George, this Apostolate of Suffering Work-shop will explore the sanctity and value of redemptive suffering through prayer, advo-cacy and education, with a specific focus on illness, the physically challenged, and end of life care. As Pope Francis has written, “The Cross of Christ invites us all to allow ourselves to be smitten by His love, teaching us always to look upon others with mercy and tender-ness, especially those who suffer, who are in need of help, who need a word or con-crete action; the cross invites us to step outside ourselves to meet them and to met them and to extend a hand to them.”

Sr. Jane Schlosser is a Sister of Mercy whose ministerial experience includes: Teaching, Religious Education, Liturgical

Work, Sacramental Work, Pastoral Work, and Retreat Work. She has also done pastoral work in the parish setting and been director of formation for her communi-ty. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology, a Mas-ter’s in Religious Education, a certificate in Spiritual Di-rection and a Doctorate in Ministry.

“When God creat-ed each of us, He did so with preci-sion and purpose… let us treat each person as the mas-terpiece that he or she is.”

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Over the next two weeks, as we hear of the interior anguish of Jesus, we are led to the Garden of Gethsemane, the scene of a night of suffering, failure, and loss. In Hebrew, the word means "olive press," and it was an olive grove, although only a few trees remain. Olives can't be eaten off the trees, they need to be cured--knocked from the trees at harvest time, scooped into a stone basin, and cracked open by a heavy millstone. The crushing stone weight was itself called a "gethsemane," and once it was lowered onto the olives, oil from the fruit and the inner stone would drip into a groove and flow into jars. The night before his death, Jesus experienced such anguish that scripture says his own blood perspired from him, an image no one who understands olive oil produc-tion could miss. Today, the Mount of Olives is within the city of Jerusalem and the site of the Church of All Nations, also known as the Basili-ca of the Agony. It was built in 1924, funded by Catholics in twelve different countries. An open-air altar on the grounds is used by Anglicans on Holy Thursday every year. Nearby is the Russian Church of Mary Magdalene, built by the czar in 1888, its magnificent golden domes a distinctive landmark. There is also another tiny Catholic Church, called Dominus Flevit, or "The Cry of the Lord," built in a teardrop shape in the mid-1950s. For centuries, the Franciscan order has had the care of the shrines of the Holy Land, and our Good Friday collection helps sustain these precious sites.
