Third Sunday of Lent

The St. Francis of Assisi community is a welcoming Christian family. We believe in Jesus Christ and are guided by the Holy Spirit and the example of St. Francis. We gather to celebrate, to grow in the knowledge of our faith rooted in the Catholic tradition, and to recognize our responsibility to reach out to the world.

Pastor’s Morsels And Tidbits

Notes on the Scripture An interesting contrast presents itself in our two big Bible stories this week. On the one hand we’ve got the grumbling nation behind Moses: reasonably thirsty, yet de-cidedly unpleasant about it. These are the same folks who’ve been recently deliv-ered from a generation of slavery, miraculously led across a divided sea, and granted the unlikely gifts of quail and manna from heaven, right there in the Sinai wilderness. You’d expect a little show of faith from these people, an air of courtesy mixed into their request for water. But all we see is an ugly, snarling mob of in-grates. On the other hand we meet the woman from Samaria, obviously thirsty, too, or she wouldn’t be visiting the well at this difficult, sun-drenched midday hour. She also has reasons to be unpleasant: It’s hot, there’s a strange man hovering over her destination, and what’s worse he’s a traditional enemy to her community. Yet this woman chooses to keep the dialogue civil, calling the stranger “sir” and demon-strating, once more, a delightful spunk that is the signature characteristic of a bibli-cal hero. Friends through those stories, we are reminded today; that the way we relate with one another is the truest sign of our faith. Let us take the example of Samaritan women and try to apply it in our daily lives. May her example be an inspiration to all of us this Lent! Lent You can’t step into the same river twice. That’s because the water never stops moving. The seasons of the church year are like that. You’re tempted to say: Oh, Lent again. But it’s not the same Lent as last year. And you’ll never have this Lent back again in the future. This is a new Lent. You’re not who you were or where you were a year ago. Make a quick inventory of what’s changed: births, deaths, moves, goals, health. There’ve been expansions or contractions of the mind, heart, options, bank account. Break-ups and breakdowns. You’ve won and failed a few more times. You’ve served and you’ve sinned. Lent 2015 is not a place you’ve ever been before, so keep your eyes open. The path is not the same, nor is the person walking it. CRHP Retreat You have a chance this weekend to sign up for this great event. We are hosting our CRHP retreat for women on March 25/26 & men on April 1/2. Please consider this opportunity and check the table in the narthex or the bulleting for more infor-mation. If you know someone who would be interested, please encourage them to do it. This is a great overnight retreat, right here, at our parish. Don’t miss it! Happy St. Patrick & St. Joseph Feasts! This week we celebrate two great saints and along with them Irish, Polish and Ital-ian heritages. There is so much beauty in diversity and I am grateful for having it all at SFA. Happy St. Patrick and St. Joseph Feasts!!!

During Lent, there

are many opportuni-

ties to aid the less

fortunate. One way

to make a contribu-

tion as a family is to

participate in as-

sembling Easter

Baskets for the

many children in

need who live near

our own community.

On Monday, March 20th, the Catholic

Charities @ St. Francis committee will

meet to fill baskets that will be given to

the children whose families visit the sup-

plemental supper programs at St. Anne,

St. Blase and St. Christopher. We will

also assemble gift bags containing hy-

giene kits, socks and t-shirts to be given

to the homeless.

Join us after morning mass and

again at 7:00 pm in Upton Hall.

If you are unable to join us, but would

like to make a contribution, we are ac-

cepting donations of crayons, glue

sticks, erasers, individually wrapped

pieces of candy, fruit snacks and

socks. This project truly brings smiles to

hundreds of precious faces.

On behalf of our committee, thank you

for your consideration and continued

support. Should you have any ques-

tions please contact Paula Belski at

FOOD DRIVE MARCH 25/26 As we prepare for Easter the most asked question is where we are go-ing to celebrate Easter Dinner. Sadly for many of our fellow man the question is will I eat at all today and how am I going to feed my fam-ily. 1 in 8 Americans face the inse-curity of not knowing when they will have their next meal. Lent is a time for prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Please consider do-nating non-perishable Food at the Church Van in the parking lot or making a Cash donation in the Nar-thex on March 25 & 26. Donations benefit our parish’s St. Vincent de Paul Society, St. Phillip Neri, and the Orland Township Food Pantry.

Easter Baskets for Parish Shut-Ins and

Holy Family Villa Residents

You could make a difference in life of an elderly or ill person this Lenten season. The Helping Hands Com-mittee is hoping to bring joy to our parish shut-ins and residents of Holy Family Villa this Easter through the contribution of baskets donated by our parishioners. These baskets may be filled with personal care items, things for them to do and healthy snacks. A few exam-ples are:

Besides a traditional basket, reusable bins are nice. You can decorate with ribbon and artificial flowers. Use your imagination!

Please mark your basket “Man” or “Woman.” Get everyone involved in making the baskets and use this as family event for Lenten almsgiving. Have your little ones make homemade Easter cards. If you have any, please contact Corinna Pytel at 478-0710, Teri Sankey at 478-0474, Debby Obler at 966-4727 or Kay Scanlan at 226-1518. Please return your basket the weekend of Saturday, April 1st and Sunday, April 2nd. Baskets will be distributed before Easter. Thank you for your continued generosity.

We hired an architectural firm; a liturgical consultant and now were ready to tackle THE project - build-ing a church building. The building committee and I were aware that while the building was important it was always secondary to building the community who would prayer in this new space. The central theme of the building committee was – we want our church “to look like a church.” While such a focus seems obvi-ous, determining a more precise understanding of this mantra was a chal-lenge. Our liturgical consultant began with committee education. He shared se-ries of slides depicting Catholic churches over the centuries. His goal was to help us appreciate the va-riety of church designs and let us realize there was no single example of A church. As we began our planning, he wanted to open our thinking to many possibilities. In addition, we reviewed Church documents outlin-ing the expectations and requirements of a church to be built in the late 20th

tower because we saw that as a traditional identi-fier of a church. We wanted a roof line that had height and pointed upward. The exterior should be welcoming, the entrance should have room to gather expressing clearly our goal to be a welcome community. (These notes were taken from those early docu-ments). As I began this process, I had a lot of concern. I feared we might end up with a church building pa-rishioners would not like. If we were to look at church building projects 50 years ago, they were most likely decided by the pastor, the architect and a few trusted parishioners. Our process was transpar-ent, the committee worked together, studied, prayed and shared openly. Pa-rishioners were consulted. Experts were used. In the end, I believe we have a sacred building that would makes St. Francis a strong commu-nity in the Lord.

century. The central teaching of the Second Vatican Council document on the Liturgy was to make clear that “full and active participation” in the Eucha-rist was a central. Conse-quently, it was expected the design of a new church would foster and encour-age this participation. Town Hall gatherings were also provided for the par-ish. Besides giving history and information, John also served as a facilitator. He helped us articulate design elements found in previous church designs that we favored, as well was what was needed for today. We discussed both interior and exterior. After our study and reflec-tion, he walked us through a process to develop an agreed upon set of design principals that would serve as reference points as we made more specific deci-sions when planning with the architect. These are some the princi-ples we agreed upon. The building should be a sa-cred space and have a religious identity. On the exterior, we wanted a bell

Catholic Church.” CCC 830 Now, those who do not believe in Jesus are re-lated to us in different ways. We have a special relationship to the Jewish faith. Judaism is in re-sponse to God’s revela-tion in the Old Covenant. To the Jews “belong the sonship, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship and the promises…” Judaism is divinely revealed and is the foundation of Christianity. CCC 840 God’s plan of salvation “also includes those who acknowledge the Crea-tor, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abra-ham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind’s judge on the last day.” CCC 841 Jesus prayed that we would be one. Let’s pray for peace and unity. Want more? Catechism of the Catholic Church 830-844 Questions? [email protected]

I have friends who call themselves Catholic but they frequently go to other churches. Who be-longs to the Catholic Church? Catholic means univer-sal. Jesus established the Catholic Church and He came to save all peo-ple. All are called to this catholic unity of the Peo-ple of God. However, people belong in different ways. First, there is the bap-tized, believing, and practicing Roman Catho-lics who are “fully incor-porated into the society of the Church.” CCC 837 See CCC 2041-2043 for t h e d e f i n i t i o n o f “practicing.” Then there are those who are imperfectly united to the Church. These are baptized Christians who do not profess our entire faith and are not in commun-ion with the successor of St. Peter, the pope. The closest are the Orthodox Christians and then our separated Protestant brothers and sisters. CCC 838 “Where there is Jesus, there is the

I’M GLAD YOU ASKED THAT QUESTION by, Sue Flanagan

I saw a film not too long ago, which really was not very popular and didn’t hang around the theaters very long. First of all I have to literally be bribed to go to movies now- a -days because they don’t make me feel good and there is too much in them which should never been seen in public. The ad, intrigued me. It was the story about a young boy and a tree. The boy was brutally bullied in school every day, his par-ents were divorced, his mother was dying of can-cer, and he was to be taken care of by his dis-liked grandmother. Now there’s a real plateful for a young one. After living in this situation and not being able to bear the scene any longer, this huge tree comes to a vivid, fiery real-ity for the boy and helps him to work out his misery and lead him to peace. The tree gave him path-ways to find his strength and in the end to show him that his enemy was in him-self. His guilt of wanting his mom to be free of her pain would not allow him to release her to death. In the end, he learned from the tree to stand against and defeat his bullies, and to let go of his guilt by for-giving himself and others and to love the ones who cared for him. It seems to me that we have a tree and the tree is our faith and Catholicism. We have guidance and testimony to lead us to the life as Christ teaches us.

MINISTERS NEEDED

E specially during the Lenten, Holy

Week, and Easter seasons, the

prayer texts of the Eastern Church

revel in paradoxical images of Christ: the

eternal life who is put to death, the host of

the supper who is also its meal, the thirsty

crucified one with living water streaming

from his side.

These images flow from the evangelists'

portrayals of Jesus and from his very minis-

try, during which he often upset or reversed

people's expectations about him or the

ways of God.

This "reversal" is at play in today's Gospel,

as Jesus speaks to an enemy foreigner

who is also a woman beneath his status. In

addition he, the thirsting one, shows the

woman to be the one truly thirsting. He--

whose parched lips will say "I thirst" before

he dies--is the source of life and life-giving

water.

Lent calls upon us to dwell on how each of

us is thirsting for Christ, and it leads us, ulti-

mately, back to the life-giving waters of our

baptism into his Body.
