A publication of First Christian Church of Edmond, OK

    CONNECTIONVol. 5 No. 13 April 4, 2013

Laughing With GodBy Rev. Dr. Jerry Black, Associate Minister

    Unlike my

    cousin Baxter

    Black, well

    known

    humorist,author, and

Cowboy Poet, I am not the one who

can stand in front of a crowd and get a

laugh from even the most rehearsed and

canned joke. If, as comedians say, Its

all about the timing, then mine is just

plain off. There is no on. And yet, I

love to laugh. Its so relaxing and such a

grand release from the tensions of life. I

dont see how anyone gets through the

day without a little laughter. Fortunately,

we do a lot of that in our First Christian

life and work. Thats what makes it so

    much fun.

This coming Sunday is Holy Humor

Sunday. It is the day we re-join God in

what must have been the most pleasing

    of momentsthe resurrection. On the

Friday before, it looked to the world as

though all was lost. Jesus had been tried,

    convicted, sentenced, killed, and buried.

The cross was empty and the stone was

in place. What a horrific end to such a

promising leader. And then, as thatGaither song so beautifully says, came

the morning, night turned into day; the

stone was rolled away, hope rose with

the dawn shadows vanished before the

sun, death had lost and life had won, for

morning had come. And God laughed.

If thats not scriptural, it is at least the

grandest of probabilities; for what a

    magnificent, shocking turn of events.

Those who thought they had won, had

    only enabled the wondrous.

So Holy Humor Sunday not only

gives us an opportunity for continuing

the Easter celebration and the greatest

miracle in human history, but it gives us

another profound moment to give thanks

and laugh with God. Join us this Sunday

for worship, more thanksgiving, and a

    little laughter.

    FaithLife Connections Event Saturday, April 20, 9 AM - 3 P

Room 1A FaithLife Connections (FLC) event will be held at First Christian Edmond on Saturday, April 20, from 9 AM to 3 PM. FaithLifeConnections is an ongoing lecture/conversation series offering a forum for participants to explore faith values in daily life. Guestpanelists include Jari Askins, former Lieutenant Governor of Oklahoma, and FCC Edmonds own, Larry Ball.

This presentation called Exploring the Intersections of Religion and Politics by Dr. Joe Bessler (theRobert Travis PeakeAssociate Professor of Theology at Phillips Theological Seminary), will explore the intersection of religion and politics by noticinghow major political speeches are structured in ways that overlap with the structure and topics of Christian faith and theology.Well consider several reasons why that overlap exists. By exploring these connections and tensions between the religious and thepolitical, lay leaders will see better the importance of distinguishing our religious convictions from our political commitments.

Those who seek to make connections between faith matters and daily life are welcome to attend. For more information or toregister, visit www.ptstulsa.edu/faithlifeconnections or call (918) 610-8303.

A Story of CompassionDuring the 40 Days of Compassioncampaign, many wonderful hours

were spent helping others. One of thevolunteer opportunities was a Saturdayof yard work with the Renewing Handsministry. They planned a help day for

one of FCC Edmonds members. Tenvolunteers showed up to rake leaves. Theycollected bags and bags of yard trimmings. The lawn was even mowed. What awonderful example of compassion, caringand kindness! Thank you to all of thosethat helped that day, and, to everyonewho participated in the 40 Days ofCompassion. God bless you!
