Globalization means increasing international division of labor and growing world trade. Industry and commerce depend on reliably managed flows of materials and goods while the networked world economy requires system services. The core competencies of BLG LOGISTICS focus on automobile, contract and container logistics. The Group offers complete logistics system services in these three segments.

BLG holds a unique position in the market as a seaport service and logistics provider. By combining its traditional port operation services with the service profiles of modern logistics, the company has developed into a logistics specialist on a global scale. Today BLG has more than 16,000 employees at over 100 locations in Europe, North and South America, Africa and Asia.

AUTOMOBILE LOGISTICSThe AUTOMOBILE Division integrates all vehicle logistics services. Aside from cargo handling, storage and technical preparation at the terminals on the sea, on major rivers and inland, the division performs freight forwarding and transport services via rail, road, inland and coastal waterways as well as technical services.

Among other things, a fleet of over 500 car transporters regularly supplies about 7,000 dealers in Europe. The company’s own auto trains link the plants of the manufacturers to BLG’s terminals. On the Rhine and Danube seven car carriers provide for vehicle transport. This means the logistics service chain from the carmakers to the end customer is complete. In 2014 a total of 7.4 million vehicles were handled. That makes BLG the market leader in Europe.

Bremerhaven is the strongest location in the terminal network and numbers among the biggest automobile ports in the world with 2.3 million vehicles handled in 2014. European manufacturers mainly ship their products to North America, Asia and the Near East. Imports predominantly come from Asia and the US. All major car shipping companies serve Bremerhaven regularly. Every year more than 1,400 car carriers call at the terminal.

As Germany’s manufacturers outsource production abroad, “German” vehicles are also imported, such as BMW and Mercedes from US production. In addition, cars are discharged from big ships in Bremerhaven and then transported via smaller seagoing vessels to the countries of destination, primarily in the Baltic Sea region (transshipment).

Besides expansive outdoor areas, multistory parking decks are available for temporary storage of vehicles. They offer protection for the cars until they are loaded onto ves-sels or transported inland. Altogether there is space for 115,000 automobiles at the Bremerhaven Auto Terminal.

As at other locations, BLG operates technical centers in Bremerhaven. Their functions include cleaning vehicles and carrying out pre-delivery inspection (PDI). Damage in transit is repaired there. This is followed by technical retrofitting in line with the reg-istration requirements in the countries of destination. In addition, extras are installed, including sun roofs, air conditioning, nav-igation systems, leather seats, sports rims and spoilers. That is less expensive for mass production manufacturers and automobiles from overseas get to the customer faster if the finishing work is performed in Europe. With over 230,000 processed vehicles a year the Bremerhaven technical center is the big-gest car workshop in Europe.

Gioia Tauro is developing into the auto- mobile hub of the Mediterranean region. The central Mediterranean location is ideal.

Gioia Tauro is networked to Bremerhaven. This means both operation and service quality are identical at the two locations. Furthermore, the joint venture BMS Logistica was established in Brazil for automobile logistics in South America. Within the Eastern European Strategy BLG develops the automobile logistics in Eastern Europe and Russia. Since March 2015, BLG maintains a representative office in Turkey.

Thanks to the extensive network of locations, customers are offered complete logistics services, and thus innovative comprehensive solutions for the automobile market, both in the finished vehicles segment as well as for other rolling cargo. The quality of the entire range of services is certified.

CONTRACT LOGISTICSThis BLG division stands for implementation of complete logistics systems for the individual needs of customers. The logistics specialist is both the architect and main player in the logistics chain. It is not possible to design specialized logistics solutions with standard software. For this reason BLG possesses in-depth software competence. In Frankfurt, BLG has started running one of the most advanced storage and picking systems currently in existence in 2015.

Example of automotive industry:Worldwide procurement, worldwide production strategies and worldwide sales are reality in the sector. At the same time manufacturers have greatly reduced their own vertical range of production. Logistics specialists therefore integrate the parts production of manufacturers and numerous suppliers into their system services so they can reliably supply the assembly lines at home and abroad. Manufacturers also outsource specific production processes to their logistics providers. At BLG this includes hardening of bonded body components, preservation of unfinished parts and preassembly of system components. BLG thus acts as an “extended workbench” of the automotive industry.

Example of retail logistics I:The entire European market and parts of Africa are centrally supplied with office equipment made by Konica Minolta via Emmerich. At the European Distribution Center basic units are configured according to individual customer orders, equipped with accessories and operating manuals on a country-specific basis and sent off to the customer with a few hours.

Example of retail logistics II:In Bremen BLG built one of the largest and most modern high-bay warehouses in Europe for its client Tchibo. From there Tchibo’s network of shops as well as the independent retail trade, altogether over 50,000 sales outlets and not forget the online-orders, are supplied with Tchibo products. Every week the seasonal and needs-oriented line of articles changes and is replaced by new products. As a result, large volumes of goods move through the Logistics Center in short intervals.

Example of retail logistics III:In Germany and Italy BLG operates large central warehouses with a total of around 450 employees that supply IKEA furniture stores. The stores in Germany and Italy are provided with all products offered there from the central warehouses according to IKEA’s constantly changing requirements.

Example of wind energy logistics:BLG WindEnergy Logistics stands for the net-working of onshore and maritime logistics. Holistic logistics systems are customized to the individual customer needs to coordinate and manage the supply chains of wind turbines and their components from production to installation at sea. In performing these services, BLG combines its competence in industrial and production logistics with seaport logistics and bundles know-how for the wind energy sector.

Other focal points of the Contract Logistics Division include project shipments, such as traffic systems, steel products, machines and equipment, the entire group of forestry products as well as refrigerated and frozen goods.

BLG invests where the specific customer needs the service. Thus, a network of logistics centers and special facilities now operate at 30 locations in Germany and abroad for such well-known clients as BMW, Mercedes, Bosch, Siemens, Konica Minolta, IKEA, engelbert strauss, Griesson – de Beukelaer and others.

Example of industrial and production logisticsBLG optimizes complex flows of goods connected with production. This includes supply (JIT/JIS) and disposal for production lines, plant logistics for optimum in-plant movement of goods, empties management and value added assembly work in diverse sectors – combining products and processes.

The company’s in-house logistics competence covers the entire chain encompassing the movement of goods, from receiving to shipping with inventory management, continuous order picking, supplying production lines, taking delivery of finished products, in-plant transport, assembly work, cleaning, repair, quality inspections, packing and shipment as well as returns and repair management.

CONTAINER LOGISTICS

In BLG’s CONTAINER Division the EUROGATE joint venture is the market leader in Europe. Its strong market position is based on the pan-European terminal concept, extending to all services related to container traffic, including feeder services and intermodal networking with the hinterland.

EUROGATE’s terminal network encompasses the locations in Bremerhaven, Hamburg, Lisbon, Gioia Tauro, La Spezia, Ravenna, Salerno, Cagliari, Tangier, Ust-Luga and Wilhelmshaven. In 2014 EUROGATE handled 14.84 million standard containers (TEU). The strongest location in the terminal network is Bremerhaven.

To optimally tap the performance potential of EUROGATE’s terminals in Bremerhaven and Hamburg for shipowners, it is necessary to deepen the shipping channel in the Outer Weser and Elbe. Both ports have to be accessible for all container vessels independent of tidal movements. A shipping channel depth of over 15 meters below chart datum is a prerequisite for this.

There are no shipping channel restrictions at the new container terminal in Wilhelms-haven (JadeWeserPort). The existing depth of 18 meters below chart datum ensures excellent conditions, also for the biggest container ships. The Jade shipping channel is optimal even for container giants having a capacity over 18,000 TEU. The JadeWeserPort meets the long-term capacity needs for container handling on the German North Sea Coast.
