God made man to gloriy God. Man chose to sin and do things that pleased man

and went against what God said. God decided to destroy the earth by ood. He

provided an ark to save a remnant. God later would display His salvation again to

us by sending Jesus to die on a cross, another piece o wood, or sins that He did not

commit. There is only one way o salvation or the glory o God the Father.

    Dear Snday School Teacher,

Yor ministry as a teacher or or Lord has eternal vale! When we view or ministry in light o

eternity, we see its importance and the privilege that God has entrsted to s. In Psalm 78, the

Bible also reminds s o this great calling: One generation commending the Gospel to the next.

Treri Crit Crric:The ministry resorce that yo hold in yor hand is prodced

and shaped by the local chrchThe Bride o Christ. We have three primary strategies thatgide s. First, we desire to prodce a Gospel-centered crriclm that allows every child, babies to

high school stdents, to stdy the same Scriptre passage each week. Second, we seek to eqip

parents to thrive in their God-given role as their childs primary discipler. We want this resorce,

thereore, to connect the chrch and the home by providing the Connecting Chrch and Home

resorce within the crriclm. Third, we want to respond to the

desperate need or crriclm resorces arond the world. We

desire to bless the nations with a tool that will help them reach

the world with the Gospel o Christ.

    Qrter Oe: God on Display

Every relationship begins with an introdction. God introdcing Himsel to s is the heartbeat o

    this stdy.

God on Display is a major theme that rns throghot all o Scriptre. Gods desire to have com-

mnion with those He created is seen rom cover to cover o the Bible. In the rst ew pages, we see

God commning in the Garden o Eden with Adam and Eve. The theme o commnion contines

to be seen throgh the role o the Old Testament tabernacle and temple. In the New Testament,

God became incarnate in Jess, God with s. Ater Jess, the Father gives the Holy Spirit to believers

and instittes the Chrch. Fellowship in the Chrch breeds commnity, both with God and othersmade in His likeness. As believers, we are garanteed that we will spend eternity in commnion

with God, dwelling in His presence.

God is on display: everywhere; in the past, present and tre; and in or lives as believers. Let s

live continally to display Gods greatness and love.

    Eter te story

The news. The headlines on the Internet news

eed. All these mediums deliver to us daily

updates into the evil that is in this world.

We are inundated with news o horric acts and

    disappointing occurrences. There have been

worldwide evils such as the Holocaust and

the devastations o the World Wars to more

localized evils such as the attacks o 9/11,children being abducted and companies going

bankrupt because o corrupt CEOs. Hopeully, we

as Christians will never become inoculated to

    the evil that surrounds us.

However, we have a bright spot in this

dark world. There is a God in charge o every-

thing, and He shows mercy on s sinners. We

oten do not think that we are as bad as other

people. We wold like to think o orselves as

Noah, who ond avor in the eyes o the Lord.

However, we know we are sinl. Many o s

wold resonate with what William Farley says in

    Gospel-Powered Parenting: Becase God is

compassionate, gracios and slow to anger,

the conseqences or sin do not always imme-

diately ollow. There are always conseqences,

bt they are not always immediate. We mis-

take Gods patience with sinners or the ideathat God is tolerant o sin. We reason there has

been no jdgment, God mst not care. I mst

be a special exception to Gods normal rles

    (pg. 57).

May we never consider that God brushes

over our sins or the sins o others in this world.

May the mercy and patience we receive rom

our God, just as Noah and his amily did in the

Treasure Story or this week, cause us to praise

God or His extreme mercy and to repent o

    our sins.

Gods mercy means Godsgoodness toward those in misery and distress.

Gods grace means Gods goodness toward thosewho deserve only punishment. Wayne Grudem,

    Bible Doctrine, pg. 91

If . . . God is just and we believethat His punishments always t the crime, then

we will have made the frightful discovery of

what the old preachers called the exceeding

sinfulness of sin. John Ensor, The Great Work

    of the Gospel, pg. 47

    story Otie

In Genesis 6-9, we see Gods declaration o the

problem o worldwide sin, His solution to send a

global food, and His restorative aithulness and

    covenantal promise.

gOds dEClaRaTIOn. In Genesis 6:5-6, God

grieves over man and his wickedness. This wick-

edness was not just an isolated incident or a

problem with a ew, but so widespread that the

Creator had to lament over His very act o cre-

ating man. This wickedness was to the core o

man, so that the Lord says that every intention

o the thoughts o his heart was only evil con-

tinually (Genesis 6:5). This declaration rom God

expresses the magnitude o the problem o sin.

The words paint a devastating pictre: every

intention o the thoghts, only evil, and only

evil continally. In Genesis 6:11, the repetition

contines as the earth is described as corrptand lled with violence.

geei 6:5-6, 11: The LORD saw that the

wickedness o man was great in the earth,

and that every intention o the thoghts o his

heart was only evil continally. And the LORD

was sorry that He had made man on the earth,

and it grieved Him to His heart. Now the earth

was corrpt in Gods sight, and the earth was

    lled with violence.

gOds sOluTIOn. God decides to send a

food to destroy everything He has created. He

intends to blot ot man . . . make an end to all

    fesh . . . destroy all fesh (Genesis 6:7, 13, 17).

There is no qestion o Gods plan to carry ot

    this destrction and cleansing.

geei 6:7, 13, 17: So the LORD said, I will

blot ot man whom I have created romthe ace o the land, man and animals and

creeping things and birds o the heavens, or

I am sorry that I have made them. And God

said to Noah, I have determined to make an

end o all fesh, or the earth is lled with vio-

lence throgh them. Behold, I will destroy

them with the earth. For behold, I will bring

a food o waters pon the earth to destroy

all fesh in which is the breath o lie n-

der heaven. Everything that is on the earthshall die.

    gOds FaIThFulnEss and PROmIsE.There

is some good news, a bright spot, in this nar-

rative o worldwide wickedness and destrc-

tion. In the midst o this total destrction, God

showered avor and grace on one man, his

amily and some animals. He ond avor with

Noah, spared his amily and commanded Noah

to take in animals to the ark to help repoplate

the earth ater the waters receded. God gave

Noah specic instrction with which to bild

    the ark (Genesis 16:14-16, 18-21).

geei 6:14-16, 18-21: Make yorsel an

ark o gopher wood. Make rooms in the ark,

and cover it inside and ot with pitch. This is

how yo are to make it: the length o the ark

300 cbits, its breadth 50 cbits, and its height

30 cbits. Make a roo or the ark, and nish it

to a cbit above, and set the door o the ark in

its side. Make it with lower, second, and thirddecks. Bt I will establish my covenant with

yo, and yo shall come into the ark, yo, yor

sons, yor wie, and yor sons wives with yo.

And o every living thing o all fesh, yo shall

bring two o every sort into the ark to keep

them alive with yo. They shall be male and

emale. O the birds according to their kinds,

and o the animals according to their kinds, o

every creeping thing o the grond, accord-

ing to its kind, two o every sort shall comein to yo to keep them alive. Also take with

yo every sort o ood that is eaten, and

store it p. It shall serve as ood or yo and

    or them.

Noah nding avor with God was a work o

God, not anything that Noah did himsel.

Noah was hman and sinl (Genesis 9:20-23),

bt God showed him grace and allowed him

to dwell in saety in the midst o the food(Ephesians 2:8-9). In According to Plan, Graeme

    Goldsworthy explains, While mankind, be-

case o its wickedness, provokes Gods an-

ger, Noah nds grace in Gods eyes. Genesis

6:8, Bt Noah ond avor in the eyes o the

Lord, means nothing more than God liked

him. Here the signicance o the phrase lies

in what God does or the man whom He likes.

He rescues him. Noahs righteousness is simply

stated alongside Gods grace without any com-

ment about whether it is the cause or eect o

Gods attitude toward Him. Later it will become

much clearer that Gods grace is the cause o

sinul people becoming righteous. Grace then is

an attitude o God or the good o those who do

not deserve the good (pg. 114).

Within the biblical text, the Floodis synonymous with eschatological judgment and

Noahs deliverance is an image of the salvation

of the faithful (Isaiah 8:7-8; Matthew 24:37-39). John Sailhamer, The Pentateuch as Narrative,

    pg. 127

geesis 9:20-23: Noah began to be a man o

the soil, and he planted a vineyard. He drank o

the wine and became drunk and lay uncovered

in his tent. And Ham, the ather o Canaan, saw

the nakedness o his ather and told his two

brothers outside. Then Shem and Japheth took

a garment, laid it on both their shoulders, and

walked backward and covered the nakedness o

their ather. Their aces were turned backward,

and they did not see their athers nakedness.

Throughout the Bible, God displayed His grace

to mankind in order to redeem or Himsel a

people, a remnant. Remnant means a small

remaining part or group. This is exactly who

God provides or in the story: Noah and his

amily. These chosen ew would be used toulll Gods command ound in Genesis 9:1:

Be ruitul and multiply and ll the earth.

God llled His promise o keeping Noah

and his amily sae and then proclaimed His

continal aithlness in a covenant with

Noah. Genesis 9:8-17 tells o this great hope

that we now have becase o the aithlness

o or great God, who loves to display His

greatness and mercy on or lives. Its amazing

that the Creator o rain and sn and light wold

se a particlar act o natre to indicate His

    aithlness to all o mankind.

geei 9:8-17: Then God said to Noah and

to his sons with him, Behold, I establish my

covenant with yo and yor ospring ater

yo, and with every living creatre that is with

yo, the birds, the livestock, and every beast o

the earth with yo, as many as came ot o the

ark; it is or every beast o the earth. I establish

my covenant with yo, that never again shall

all fesh be ct o by the waters o the food, and never again shall there be a food to de-

stroy the earth. And God said, This is the sign

o the covenant that I make between me and

yo and every living creatre that is with yo,

or all tre generations: I have set my bow

in the clod, and it shall be a sign o the cov-

enant between me and the earth. When I bring

clods over the earth and the bow is seen in

the clods, I will remember my covenant that is

between me and yo and every living creatre

o all fesh. And the waters shall never againbecome a food to destroy all fesh. When the

bow is in the clods, I will see it and remem-

ber the everlasting covenant between God and

every living creatre o all fesh that is on the

earth. God said to Noah, This is the sign o the

covenant that I have established between me

and all fesh that is on the earth.

    Men were not only perverse

by habit and were used to living in an evil way,but that wickedness was too deeply seated in

their hearts to leave any hope of repentance. He

could not have more forcibly asserted that mans

depravity was such that no moderate remedy

could cure it. John Calvin, Genesis, pg. 69

Few texts in all of Scripturespeak more clearly about Gods motives for

action. The fact that Gods motives remain good

when the human races have become so impurehighlights sins inappropriateness and Gods

correctness in doing something about it. Paul

House, Old Testament Theology, pg. 68

Divine mercy is the dispositionof God to relieve the miserable, salve the

wounds of the hurt, and receive sinners, quite

apart from any works or merit . . . Gods mercy

to sinners is the decisive expression of Gods

great compassion for lost and alienated crea-

tures. Gods mercy is not cheap and never

dissociated from Gods holiness or justice.

    Gospel Trths Abot Man

Man is tterly wicked (Genesis 6:5, 11-12). God made man in His own image, to be God image bearers,

yet we chose to ollow or own way. We rebel against the God who created s. God looks down rom

heaven in this Treasre Story and is saddened by the pervasive wickedness that He sees in mankind.

    Gospel Trths Abot Redemption

God shows His nmerited avor, grace, to one man and his amily (Genesis 8:1, 21-22; 9:13-17).

We see the beginning o a remnant, God saving and setting aside one amily to lll His

greater prposes throghot history. Here He provides a boat or this amily. He will later provide

another piece o wood in the orm o a cross. This one cross wold hold His Son, and this act o s-preme love wold save all who wold believe in Jess.

Sin is never normal. Sin is disruption ofcreated harmony and then resistance to divine restoration

of that harmony. Above all, sin disrupts and resists the vital

human relation to God. Cornelius Plantinga, Not the Way ItsSupposed to Be: A Breviary of Sin, pg. 5

Noah portrays our redemption by Christ. As Noah built an arktothe saving of his house, so the Lord Jesus obtained eternal redemption for His house. As Noah suf-

fered all the fury of Gods wrath in the ark and was never touched by it, so all Gods elect suffered all

the fury of Gods holy wrath in Christ to the full satisfaction of divine justice, but are never touched

or harmed in any way by it. Donald Fortner, Discovering Christ in All the Scriptures, pg. 19

The image that emerges from this portrait of Noah in thenarrative is that of a righteous and faithful remnant patiently waiting for Gods deliverance. John Sailhamer, The Pentateuch as Narrative, pg. 127

Apart from the resurrection of Jesus Christ, there is no savior, no salvation, no forgiveness of sin, and no hope of resurrected eternal life. Apart from the resurrec -

tion, Jesus is reduced to yet another good but dead man and therefore is of no considerable help to

us in this life or at its end. Mark Driscoll, Doctrine, pg. 279

God made man to gloriy God. Man chose to sin and do

things that pleased man and went against what God said.

God decided to destroy the earth by food. He provided an

ark to save a remnant. God later would display His salva-

tion again to us by sending Jesus to die on a cross, another

piece o wood, or sins that He did not commit. There is only

one way o salvation or the glory o God the Father.
