Board of Governors General Information Message from The General Manager

To all of our Members,

Well, it looks like spring is just around the corner and not soon enough! The Club will be very busy with events this spring. We have a number of Weddings, Showers Christenings and First Communions scheduled for the upcoming months.

Work around the Club will continue, as we have been working hard to improve the appearance of the facility on both the event and member sides of the building.

I am happy to announce that we will be making improvements in the upstairs ladies room this spring, as well as providing the members with new lounge seating. The seats will be upholstered in stages in order to ensure we have enough seats in the lounge at all times.

We will also be providing entertainment and special member events in the lounge on a weekly basis. We have included a “healthy choice” and a “comfort

choice” on the weekly specials. I would like to remind all members that you can enjoy the lounge here at the Club for a drink without having to stay for dinner. In fact, we would love to have members stop by for a drink in the lounge. Please check the calendar for what is going on this month at the Club.

I would like to thank the House Committee, as well as Club President, Sean Galvin and Board member, Scott Galvin for doing a fantastic job coordinating and overseeing the work on the event entrance. If you have not had the opportunity to see the changes, feel free to take a look next time you’re here. It looks great!

Don’t forget to make your reservations for Easter!

Best,

Marty

In memoriamLarry Babb

Husband, father, grandfather, friend and much more to many people.

Once in a while someone comes along who makes a difference. Larry tried to make a difference at the Club with his devotion, expertise and humor. We are saddened that his work was cut short by his all-to-soon death.

At his funeral, his son, Stu, described what it was like being his son. We all knew of his love for old movies and show tunes, and he imparted that love to his family, perhaps in unorthodox ways. He was a business man, --mingling with politicians such as Richard Nixon, Barry Goldwater, George Murphy and many more. In the entertainment segment of his career he mingled with the likes of Faye

Dunaway, Steve McQueen, Lucille Ball, Tony Curtis, William Holden, Bob Hope just to name a few. Not a conversation would go by without a mention of a humorous story pertaining to one of them. He was into sports, whether just to watch his kids or grandchildren play or filming some highly visible games in the past.

His son’s eulogy outlined growing up with Larry, which was filled with knowledge, adventure, practical jokes but most all of love.— and he gave the

same to us.He was a new friend to most of us, but he felt

like an old friend. His dedication to the Club was obvious to all who knew him and he will be missed.

Committee Reports

ENTERTAINMENT COMMITTEENeighborhood Club members celebrated St. Patrick’s Day in style with specialty cocktails, an Irish Menu and our favorite Irish Bread. Dennis O’Gorman delighted the crowd with his old & new Irish tunes. Members showed their Irish spirit in a lively sing along! St. Pat would have approved!

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEEWe are pleased to welcome new members to the

Neighborhood Club: Mr. and Mrs. Thomas (Nancy) Kelly.

Tom and Nancy Quincy residents for many years, are the Club’s newest Class A members. Long-time members Thomas and Kathleen Fitzgerald along with Gregory and Denise Casey are delighted to sponsor Mr. and Mrs. Kelly for membership. Thomas is president of Can Am Consultants, Inc. in Quincy. Both he and Nancy are civic minded individuals who have contributed to their community for many years. They are the proud parents of three sons and grandparents of four grandchildren. They are a wonderful addition to Club membership. Welcome!

The Membership Committee encourage you to take advantage of the New Member Referral Benefit Program in which qualifying sponsors may receive the benefit of the waiver of two month’s dues for each new Class A membership that they sponsor and one month’s dues for each new Class B. The numbers of new memberships and related sponsor benefits are unlimited. Especially in conjunction with “Guest Night” on Fridays for the month of April, the referral benefit makes everyone winners.

We look forward to welcoming your family, friends, co-workers and neighbors to the Neighborhood Club. Please inform staff when you are making dinner reservations that you are bringing prospective members as your guests. Applications for membership are always available in the Management Office when the Club is open. Please call 617-773-5025 or email [email protected] to request an application to be mailed or emailed.

MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE”The Best Kept Secret on the South Shore”

The results of the survey have been finalized and are available in this newsletter. Thank you to all who responded. Your opinions and ideas are very helpful and positive to read. We will be using the information to improve our Club experience and to develop a marketing brochure. The majority of respondents are happy with the Club. The responses provided the membership committees with useful information, comments, and suggestions.

Most members reported that they had joined the Neighborhood Club when friends and relatives invited them to join; others joined for the atmosphere and dining experience and the reputation of the Club and its members. The dining, social activities/events, atmosphere, and friendships made at the Club ranked high ranked high things that members enjoy.

Results indicated that members menu dining, and theme nights such as Italian Night, Tapas Night, and Irish Night, are favorites of over 50% of those who responded. Club events such as Chef’s Manager Night, Night of Thanks and Giving, the Christmas Social, Sunday Brunch, Valentine’s Dinner, New Year’s Eve, and Easter are important to the membership. The survey also revealed that members see the NCQ as a wonderful gathering place for family occasions and an elegant place with ambiance, atmosphere, and delicious food.

The staff received high praise for providing excellent service, making members feel welcome and at home, and for being an important part of a pleasant experience. One response noted, “I love all the staff.”

Bowling is key to many members and was reported to be a way to meet members, make friendships, and socialize. One member described the bowling as a joy.

When asked to describe the Neighborhood Club one member answered,”A membership like no other, very unique.”

The Membership Development Committee continues to explore new ways to attract new members. We are always happy to hear your ideas. We

are planning an open house to highlight our centennial preparations and look forward to having our neighbors tour the club. Thank you again for taking the time to complete this survey; members’ input and thoughts are important to the Club.

BOWLING COMMITTEEThe Bowling League will sorely

miss Larry Babb, a long time bowler and former Committee Chair of the Mixed Bowling. Larry always made us smile and made our bowling time a fun and happy experience. We appreciate all his hard work and efforts to make our visits to the alleys so enjoyable. Our condolences go out to Darlene and the Babb family.

From the alleys of the Neighborhood Club to the pages of the Newsletter bowling news is blowing in the March winds. March was a productive time for bowlers. Team 1’s Jeff Gallahue scored a 101; keeping it all in the family Pat Gallahue scored a 96. Teammate Mike McNally scored a crowd pleasing 100. Team 2’s Steve Bartlett bowled high strings of 90 and 103. Team 4’s Sue Egan led her team this month with a score of a well-earned 90. Bob Martell also bowled a 90 to the delight of his Team 6.

Team 2’s Gail Bell’s impressive scores of 106 and 111 earned her the Women’s High Single record for the season so far. Doreen Parker holds the High Average Women’s spot with an 84 having bowled a 94 and 95 during the month. Lorraine Coakley who bowled a 90 (not an unusual feat for Lorraine) this month reigns high with the High Match Women’s record of 198.

Congratulations to Team 3’s Bob Foy who bowled strings of 98 and 113 dominating the men bowlers with the High Men’s average of 87.4, the Men’s High Single record of 113, and the High Match Man record of 199. Bob Foy is the March Bowler of the Month as he dazzles the league with his bowling expertise.

The race for first place continues. Teams 2,3,5,6 and 7 are all in contention. It is a tight contest. The Bowling Banquet which is an opportunity for all Club members to celebrate is scheduled for Thursday, June 5.

We are missing all our Florida bowlers. We look forward to their return and to their warming up the alleys with their warm and smiling sunshine. We all send warm wishes to Nick Pepe and wish him a very speedy

recovery. And here’s a message to Joan and Peter Booras to come visit us on bowling night.

Watch out Bob Foy your 113 score was great, but Gail Bell is closing in on you with her 111 score and Mike McNally is not that far behind with a recent 100 (no thanks to self-prophesizing one pin fall on a spare.)

BOOK CLUB IBook Club I met Tuesday, March 4th for dinner and discussion. Iron Lake by William Kent Krueger is his first novel in a series of best seller mystery thrillers. Our book club has not read a mystery murder story in a long time and that is one of the reasons I choose this novel. There was a little bit of everything in this story,

murder, mayhem, love and sex with an underlying core of goodness as this former Chicago cop, Cork O’Connor, searches for the truth and reveals the dark side of a snow-covered landscape as well as the beauty and strength he has as well as his family and friends in this Northern Minnesota hometown of Aurora. For our next read, Ruthie Briggs has chosen The Fault in our Stars by John Green. He is a bestselling author for youg adults but for this older reader I’m finding it ‘pitch perfect’. Our next meeting is Tuesday, April 1. Hoping for spring-like weather by then! Franny, we missed you. Judy, hope you a good vaca in the sun as Roseann continues to enjoy the Florida sun.

BOOK CLUB IIMarch meeting turned out to be a cozy meeting. The attendees enjoyed reading The Irish Doctor so much that it may be carried over to the April meeting.

Other selections suggested were Dance Lessons by Aine Greaney. The story starts out in Boston and reverts back to Ireland where a recent widow learns her late husband had keep dark secrets about his past. This compact page-turner explores the complexities and sometimes cruel realities of family life and the themes of regret and redemption set against the backdrop of the Irish consciousness.

Proof of Heaven and The Roots of the Olive Tree by Courtney Miller Santo were also mentioned. We should be welcoming back some of our snowbirds to book club next month.
