ways they can help fightthis horrible disease thatcontinues to take livesevery year.

Without those whosupport and care forthese patients everyday, you have no RelayFor Life or any otherevent that raises moneyfor research and aware-ness. That is a realitythat hit me as I watchedand met with so manypeople.

As all of you know bynow, any event thatraises money and bringsawareness to peoplewho are sick and battlediseases of all kinds, issomething that I can al-ways be counted on tohelp promote.

What Relay For Lifeand just about everyother organization doesis to bring a muchneeded spotlight on a

disease and the successrate that it has keepingpeople alive.

I took part in the Na-tional Kidney Walk inMiami a few monthsago, and as we foundout last weekend, it’sthose volunteers whocontinue to make a dif-ference. It’s also thecommunity-orientedpeople who also havethe chance to take part– doing everything fromselling food to beingdunked in a water tank.

Several local politi-cians took part in theevents as well, which isgreat to see. HollywoodMayor Peter Bober, ViceMayor Richard Blattnerand CommissionersTracy Callari, Kevin Bie-derman and Peter Her-nandez were amongthose who jumped intothe dunk tank – spon-sored by the HollywoodPolice Department.

In addition, those whowere dunked included

Shevrin Jones (FloridaState Representative),Mark Rowe (Owner,Mickey Byrnes Pub),Alan Koslow (Chairman,Cinema Paradiso), for-mer CommissionerBeam Furr and Holly-wood Detective ErnieCandelmo.

As this year’s EventChair Marika Guytonwelcomed the crowd, itwas evident that shehad assembled quite acrew for this year. Dedi-cated people such asSara Lavenka (Opera-tions Chair), Deb Gron-vold (Survivor Chair), AlRoth ((Survivor GuestSpeaker), as well asguest speaker Dr. AtifHussein and the Memo-rial Healthcare team.

“This is such an impor-tant thing to have,” saidDr. Hussein. “When sur-vivors see the supportfrom the residents andthe volunteers, it makesa huge difference.”

Dr. Hussein has seen

his share of cancer pa-tients through the years, and the one thing thatnever stops amazinghim is the way peoplestep up to care andmake a difference.

In addition to Guyton, others who rolled uptheir sleeves and put insome great work in-cluded Dreema Stokes(ACS Community Rep),Christophe St. Luce(Team Development),Faye Katz (Luminaria),Victor Green (LogisticsChair), Pauline Watson(Activities Chair), Rox-anne Rossiter (ActivitiesChair), Daniela Roeder(Marketing/Publicity),Charles Howell (Ac-counting) and LeroyGreen (Volunteer Chair).

THE TEAMS MADETHE EVENT

In addition to the manyvolunteers who attend,it’s those who raisemoney during the RelayFor Life. Those who selleverything and anythingand spend 18 straighthours helping those whocannot be there.

Among the teams this

year were Team Holly-wood Finance & I.T.,Marching For Marian,The Purple Angels, PhiAlpha DeltaMentschikoff Chapter,Hope Trotters, Holly-wood PBA/MickeyByrne’s Irish Pub, Darlin’Darlene’s Superchics,Memorial Cancer Insti-tute, South BrowardHigh School NationalHonor Society, PartyWith A Purpose, GreaterHollywood Chamber ofCommerce, HollywoodJaycees, Team FireRescue, Dr. G’s Weight-Loss & Wellness, Too In-spired 2 Be Tired,Boulevard Heights Ele-mentary School and It’sAbout U.Others who took part

Hollywood Women’s Club Clubhouse Lifted HOLLYWOOD - On Apr. 16, the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC), Holly-wood Women’s Club, liftedtheir 1927 Greek RevivalClubhouse to save it fromsinking into the sand. Thelift will raise the building12 feet for several weekswhile the foundation is re-stored preserving this Na-tional Historic Landmark. The Clubhouse has ex-

tensive structural damageto the foundation, withcorresponding sinking ofthe walls of both the northand south sides, and deflection of the interior flooring. Constructed using beach sand, there are no piles supporting the building, and a sub-soil report indicates an unstablebase of muck and peat. The structure is in a high-water zone with frequent floodingcontributing to the erosion of the foundation. To preserve the structural integrity of thislandmark, it is a necessity that the original concrete foundation be removed, helical pil-ings installed and a new foundation constructed. The LIFT is necessary to installing anew foundation.

The project led by club Members Issabel Wise and Shelly deMarco of Hollywood,Joseph Kaller of Kaller Architectural Services, Charles Jordan of New World Builders, PatBurnett of Modern Movers and mechanical, electrical and plumbing services generouslydonated by John Lipka of E.H. Whitson. The GFWC Hollywood Women’s Club has raised funds for the project through fund

raising events and has received a historic preservation grant from the Bureau of HistoricPreservation Division of Historical Resources, Florida Department of State. To be in com-pliance with the Grant Agreement’s requirements, the project must be completed byJune 30, 2013 with only a short extension possible.

The Greater Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC), Hollywood Women’s Club, foundedin 1922, is one of the City of Hollywood’s oldest civic groups. The culturally diverse or-ganization of 100 members is dedicated to community service and the support of localand international charitable organizations. Their Clubhouse functions as a center forcommunity, social, educational and fundraising events.

HALLANDALEBEACH - On May 2ndthe city will be hostingone of the MPO's longrange transportationplanning meetings. The MetropolitanPlanning Organizationis comprised of mem-bers and alternatesthat represent all thecities, three CountyCommissioners, aSchool Board Memberand the Florida Re-gional TransportationAuthority (SFRTA). Allthese members areintegral stakeholderswithin the transporta-tion systems and as-sist in the planningand funding of alloca-tions for all projectsthroughout the county.

Often it is not under-stood the cities havelimited control overwhat happens on theroadways other thanplanning. All mainprojects are doneunder FDOT, BrowardCounty Transit orthrough a joint partici-pation agreement withthe locality. The MPOis the one vehicle forus to weigh in on is-sues for our city.

The main corridorsin the city are stateand county roads.Side or feeder streetsare city responsibility, but are still regulatedby transportation reg-ulations. These regu-lations includeparking, stop signsand other functionalcomponents that keepthe streets safe andaccessible.

The county estab-lished the MPO withthe cities through aninter-local agreement. The board allots fundsfrom state and federalsources. Funds arefrom gas taxes, li-censing, rental carfees, tolls and directfunding from state andfederal programs.

Projects are pre-sented by a city orother participatingagency through aTechnical Coordinat-ing Committee (TCC).They are reevaluatedfor consistency withother components tothe overall systemand recommended forapproval ordenial.  Many projectsof the LRTP are wait-ing to be funded. Thisis the transportationback log that is oftenreferred to.

The MPO must ap-prove the Long RangeTransportation Plan,Regional Long RangeTransportation Plan,Unified Planning WorkProgram and Trans-

portation Improve-ment Plan. The plan-ning process isongoing. Every 5years the LRTP is up-dated. The current re-view is underway,Commitment 2040.

The community isalways involved in theongoing planningthrough the Commu-nity InvolvementRoundtable (CIR) whomeets quarterly. 2040is where the processbegins for the fu-ture.  May 2nd iswhen the MPO will bein Hallandale Beach. We need everyone toget involved.

The process doesnot wipe out pastplans, but allows foramendments of theplan. Our city has fo-cused on many proj-ects over the years. Some of these are fin-ished; others areunder constructionand others are in thefive year work plan.

I have written aboutmany projects in thepast. The biggest proj-ect that will be benefi-cial to our communityis moving forward;real time signalization.

This means in 2014all the signals on Hal-landale Beach Boule-vard will finally beconnected to the maintraffic control with fiberoptic video. Originallythis project was not tobe funded until 2018.This project was prior-itized due to my ef-forts on the MPO, ourpast commission andformer ManagerGood.

Just last week I hadthe opportunity tomeet with BCT transitto expedite our busshelter program. Be-fore election season Istarted the dialogueon how we can part-ner. BCT is workingwith us to provideshelters and installa-tion. We will be re-sponsible foracquiring the right ofway andpermits.  BCT has avariety of different sizeshelters which can beutilized.

The city will be look-ing to our own trans-portation plan andevaluating what proj-ects we may want toexclude or include inthe future. These in-

clude everything fromcomplete street plans;FEC, Mini Bus systemand Diana Drive ex-tension.

We now need you tocontribute your ideasand priorities. Weknow transportationand traffic are the topissues we need to ad-dress for our resi-dents. This is notunique to simply ourcity. It is everywhere. The future will be theneed to get drivers outof their cars. This isnot impossible. Theway to do it is to in-sure there is a mod-ern, reliable transitsystem.

Join the MPO onMay 2 at the Hallan-dale Beach Commu-nity Cultural Centerlocated at 410 SE 3rdStreet behind the li-brary from 4 to 8 pm.Interactive programswill take place at both4:30 and 6:30 pm. Formore info visit theMPO website atwww.browardmpo.org.

Hallandale is host-ing a National Day ofPrayer. This event willcelebrate our diversityand unity as a com-

munity.

FDA APPROVES NON - SURGICAL FACE LIFT

The Lunchtime Face Lift!!

LOOK 10 YEARS YOUNGER

S a f e - A f f o r d a b l e - E f f e c t i v e

AS SEEN ON DR. OZ, DOCTORS TV,RACHAEL RAY, THE VIEW

Plus Vogue, Bazaar And Self Magazine & More

By Stacy Reed

FDA approves non-surgical, “lunchtime face lift and that is good news for those who do not want to go under the knife”. This non-invasive treatment is accomplished in one session, in one hour at a small fraction of the cost of a traditional face lift.

LOOK 10 YEARS YOUNGER

If you are one of the 72 million BabyBoomers out there this procedure maybe just the solution to looking 10 years younger. Regardless of how much time and energy we put into being fit, we just can’t avoid certain changes that come with aging.

Although we have maintained a healthy lifestyle we are all subject to

this process. Unfortunately, there aren’t any exercises that can remedy this aging process. Some say that the sagging skin can add 10 years to our looks.

LIFTS FACE, NECK AND EYEBROWS

Fortunately there is a new facial service that can take 10 to 15 years off your looks.

that are inevitable for the Baby Boomer generation. This unique procedure is done without incisions and will lift and tighten up the face, neck and eyebrows. This new method is safe, affordable and highly effective.

NON-SURGICAL LIFT “ULTHERAPY”

The Ultherapy device works by means of ultrasound (sound waves) to safely penetrate the skin and treat the foundation layer of muscle and tissue that holds your face up. The machine

is unique (only one on the market today) in its ability to reach this foundation layer without creating any heat or feeling on your skin. The ultrasound will be focused and treat the same foundation layer that facelift surgery does without the risk, recovery or downtime. You can go back to work the same day.

HOLLYWOOD STARS OPT FOR “ULTHERAPY”

unlike surgical face lifts. Ultherapy has been seen on Dr. Oz, Doctors TV, Rachael Ray, the View and been featured in Vogue and Bazaar.

(BPT) - When you'redone with spring clean-ing, you may assumeyou've eliminated any al-lergy triggers that werelurking in your home. But the truth is, if youdon't clean the right way,you might be making theproblem worse.

More than 40 millionAmericans suffer fromallergy problems, and 25million have asthma. Ifyour cleaning routinedoesn't specifically focuson allergen control andremoval, you may beonly moving dustaround, sending aller-gens and irritating clean-ing chemicals into theair which can affect al-lergy and asthma symp-toms. To maximize yourcleaning efforts and re-

duce allergens, considerthese simple tips fromthe asthma and allergyfriendly Certification Pro-gram, the healthy homeinitiative of the nonprofitAsthma and AllergyFoundation of America(AAFA): * Use a certified vacuumthat has a high efficiencyfilter with tight seamsand seals to preventparticles from leakingout while you vacuum. Also, choose a style thatrequires minimal expo-sure during canisteremptying or bagchanges.* Dusting improperly canactually increase air-borne dust particles inyour home. Use moistcloths or special drydusters designed to trap and lock dust from hard

surfaces. Use vacuumattachments to removedust from soft and up-holstered surfaces. * Certain cleaning prod-ucts can also contributeto airborne irritants, es-pecially if they containharsh chemicals, strongodors or volatile organiccompounds (VOCs).Choose products thatcontain none of these ir-ritants, but also bewareof "green" labels, assome of these solutionsmay be made with natu-ral allergenic ingredi-ents, such as lemon, coconut or tea-tree oils. * Rodent dander andcockroach particles arecommon householdasthma triggers. How-ever, some pesticidesmay do more harm thangood for people withasthma and allergies. Ifyou have a pest prob-lem, look for an extermi-nator with expertise inintegrated pest manage-ment and experiencetreating homes of peo-ple with asthma. * Whether you have acat or dog, pet dander ispresent in most U.S.homes. If it is possible, keep pets out of thebedroom. Your cleaningroutine should includefrequently washinglinens in your bedroom, where cat or dog dander

can settle.* Place certified allergenbarrier covers on yourmattresses and pillows.Wash your bedding atleast once a week in130 degree or higher hotwater to kill dust mitesand their eggs. * Mold, a common al-lergy trigger, can growanywhere in your homewhere moisture is pres-ent. Look for cleaningproducts that help killand prevent mold fromreturning. Also, keephousehold humiditybelow 50 percent and fixleaky pipes and cracksto reduce standing pud-dles of moisture wheremold can prosper. * If children live in yourhome, look for certifiedplush toys. Dust mites, mold and pet dandercan accumulate onplush toys over time.Certified toys can beplaced in the freezer for24 hours, then rinsed incold water to removedead mites. Dry com-pletely. Do this monthly.- * Lots of air passesthrough window areas, and airborne dust andallergens accumulate onall types of windowtreatments - which arerarely cleaned. In thefamily room andthroughout the home, replace big, heavy linendrapes with more sensi-

ble window treatmentssuch as wood blinds orflat screens that areeasy to wipe and keepclean.* If your home uses cen-tral air conditioning orheat, replace the filter inthe machine regularly, typically every 30 to 90days. Choose an HVACfilter that has been certi-fied to effectively cap-ture fine airborneparticles like pollen, dustand dander.

Keep in mind thatwhile consumers spendnearly $18 billion annu-ally on asthma and al-lergy medications, theyalso spend more than$20 billion on nonmed-ical consumer productsmarketed for people withasthma and allergies

such as room air clean-ers, bedding, vacuumsand more, according toAAFA. While demand forsuch products continuesto grow, there is littleregulation governingproduct claims, theFoundation notes.AAFA's asthma and al-lergy friendly Certifica-tion Program helpsconsumers evaluate andverify the allergen-re-ducing effectiveness of avariety of products, fromcleaning supplies, aircleaning devices andvacuums to toys, bed-ding, home improve-ment products, paints, clothes washers andmore. Understanding Home Health by Terry Adler, CEO, Always Classic Care

Some other frequently asked questions about home health care are: What should I expect from my home health aide?

When using private home care services such as we offer at Always Classic Care, you can always count on the most highly qualified, best-trained, top-of-the-line professional aides with the very best attitude and work ethic. Our aides will cooperate to the fullest of their ability to enhance your care. Based on the criteria that you or your family gives us, our aides can provide complete personal care for your activities of daily living. This can include meal preparation, house - keeping and laundry, errands and shopping or transportation to accompany you there, assis - tance with medication management, transpor - tation to doctor appointments and personal needs. Our aides are companions, oversee your safety and welfare, and can interact with your family.

I live in an assisted living facility with plenty of company and help available during the day. But, I am afraid of falling and really do not want to be alone at night. Can I have someone stay with me just at night?

Of course. You can arrange your own schedule with no minimum or maximum hours required. A night shift aide would remain awake and vigilant to your needs. Sleep-in aides are also available for 24/7 coverage. In addition, we provide a FREE safety monitor for all patients arranging a minimum of 4 hours of service a day.

Does Medicare cover private care? No. If Medicare is your primary insurance and

you are being treated for a medical problem with a doctor’s order (wound care, diabetes education, medication instruction, etc.), they will cover three shower visits a week with an aide. We are not a Medicare agency, and as a private agency, your costs may be covered through your private insur - ance or long term care insurance. When you call our office with your insurance information, we may be able to advise you better. However, our rates are very competitive and our service is excellent.

What are the advantages of going through a private agency rather than hiring on my own?

Unless you really know the person you are hir - ing privately, you are much safer going through an agency, where each aide is carefully screened and references are professionally checked. In addition, these are the criteria for an aide to be hired through a state-licensed agency: • They must be professionally trained in patient

care with a diploma or certificate from a licensed Home Health or Certified Nursing Assistant program.

• They have submitted to an electronic FBI- screened fingerprint check with Federal verifica - tion of a clean record.

• They have undergone CPR training and continu - ing education requirements.

WHY DIABETES MAKES YOU PRONE TO ULCERS by Charlton Adler, DPM

Foot ulcers, infections and gangrene are some of the major complications of diabetes that result in hospitalization, and if left untreated, can result in amputation. One simple amputation, such as a toe, often leads to addi - tional amputations as circulatory problems intensify.

The smallest trauma in the presence of peripheral sensory neuropathy (a desensiti - zation of the lower extremity) can initiate a dia - betic ulcer. Other precipitating factors include toe deformities, calluses, edema and peripheral vascular disease in the diabetic patient.

The reason that diabetics are so prone to this condition has a direct relationship to the way the body processes sugars and the effects it has on the nervous system. Several clinical trials have confirmed the role of hyperglycemia in the onset and progression of neuropathy.

Evaluation of a foot ulcer includes assess - ment of the neurological status, vascular status and evaluation of the wound itself. As podia - trists, we check vibratory sensation at the ankle and metatarsal-phalangeal joints as well as the toes, because in a metabolic disturbance like diabetes, the most distal point, the toes, will have less sensation than the ankles and metatarsal joints. Measuring the intensity at each of the areas closer to the torso will be a strategic clue as to whether the neuropathy can be linked to the diabetes (a metabolic disorder).

Treatment of diabetic foot ulcers include debridement of dead tissue, offloading of pres - sure on the critical area and infection control. All three methods are critical to good healing

Necrotic, or dead, tissue includes calluses or hardened skin and foreign body. This necrotic skin is removed mechanically or chemically with comfort a key factor for our patients. The area is then dressed and treated with a variety of new wound care products that encourage healthy new growth.

Offloading is the term used to keep the area free of pressure. This would include crutches, removable cast walkers, postoperative shoes and wedge shoes.

Infection control is the most critical aspect of a healing diabetic ulcer. Staphylocccus (and its methicillin-resistant more serous component, MRSA), streptococcus, psuedomonas, and other enterobacteriae are the most prominent organisms that complicate the healing process by causing cellulitis in the entire limb.

If not treated properly, even the earliest sign of pressure on a diabetic foot can have dis - astrous results, including loss of a limb. The first sign of pressure is a red spot (such as a corn) that does not turn white when you apply pressure to it. This is considered a Stage I pres - sure ulcer, and for the diabetic, should generate a next-day visit to his or her podiatrist.

Foot care is of utmost importance to a per - son with diabetes. A good practice is to wash and dry your toes and feet daily and inspect them each time. Be sure your shoes fit properly with no tightness or red spots on toes, bunion areas or heels. Clip your nails with clippers, not scissors. And, most important, visit your podia - trist every three months.

Dr. Charlton Adler has been recognized for his limb-saving successes along with vascular specialists at Jackson North, the Aventura Wound Center and Kindred Hospital in Hollywood. He is a three-time Board Certified Podiatrist (Diplomate American Board of Primary Podiatric Medicine, Diplomate, American Board of Podiatric Surgery, Certified Wound Care Specialist) with offices in North Miami Beach. 2390 NE 186 St - 305-494-0338 www.miamifootankle.com

Osteoporosis is oftenconsidered a “silent” dis-ease one that is associ-ated with few warningsigns in the earlystages. However, do youknow that the earlysigns of osteoporosismay be able to be seenin the mouth? Whendentist observe boneloss in the jaw, it may bea sign of bone loss inanother other part of thebody.

Osteoporosis is one ofthe most commonhuman bone diseasesaffecting millions of peo-ple, including over onethird of females abovethe age of 65. Osteo-porosis is characterizedby decreased bone den-sity and weakenedbones. As it progresses, osteoporosis canweaken bones to thepoint that they breakunder otherwise normalstress. Symptoms of os-teoporosis often go un-noticed until a majorfracture occurs, but yourdentist may be able todetect the early signs ofosteoporosis during yourregular dental exam.

Risk Factors:Although osteoporosis

affects men and women, post – menopausalwomen are particularlysusceptible to osteo-porosis because dimin-ished estrogen levelsmay speed up boneloss. Similarly, youngwomen who are verythin and do not produceenough estrogen tomenstruate, or thosewith eating disorders, may be at increased riskfor osteoporosis.

Other risk factorsinclude:

• Heredity• Lack of exercise• Calcium deficiency• Smoking• High caffeine and/orhigh alcohol consump-tion• Certain medications(such as steroids)

HOW CAN OSTEOPOROSIS

AFFECT YOUR ORALHEALTH?

Besides causingweakened bones, whichcan lead to fracturesthroughout the body, os-teoporosis can alsohave significant affect onyour oral health. In ad-vanced stages, osteo-porosis can lead to toothloss or erosion of thejawbone. Once teeth arelost, the jawbone canbegin to lose its shape, which can affect yourability to eat, drink, andcommunicate effectively.Osteoporosis can alsoincrease the risk of peri-odontal (gum) disease.

PREVENTION – KEEPYOU TEETH ANDBONES STRONG!

Most people, espe-cially women, will reach

their peak bone mass bythe time they are in theirearly 20’s, from then ononly maintenance of ex-isting bone is possible. Therefore the best pre-vention of osteoporosisshould start in adoles-cence since it may be acritical time for bonemass formation. Cal-cium is essential tobuilding strong bonesand adolescents shouldalso be encouraged toconsume less soda asthe phosphoric acid inmost cola drinks canlimit calcium absorption.

Ways to prevent osteoporosis for adults

include:• Daily intake of the rec-ommended amount ofcalcium women – 1200mg and men 800 mg,and over age of 65years 1500 mg.ª Perform weight bear-ing activities and musclestrengthening exercises.• Eat a healthy diet, in-cluding calcium and vita-min D.• Do not smoke• Reduce the amount ofcaffeine and alcoholconsumed.• Visit your dentist regu-larly.

OSTEOPOROSIS ANDORAL HEALTH INOLDER PEOPLE:

Tooth loss (eden-tulism) and osteoporosisare two of the commonmajor health problemsamong older people.Osteoporosis occurswhen the bone becomesless dense and morelikely to develop frac-tures, and commonly af-fects bone in the hip, spine, and wrists. Vari-ous medical studies pro-duce a link betweenosteoporosis and boneloss in the jaw, whichsupports and anchors

teeth. Studies in Flo-rence and other citiessay that jawbone deteri-oration contributes totooth loss, which affectsaround a third of USadults 65 and older.

According to studies, women who have osteo-porosis are three timesmore likely to experi-ence tooth loss thanthose who don’t. Loss ofalveolar bone, the partof the jawbone that sup-ports teeth, has beenfound to loosen up teethand develop tooth loss.

The link between gumdisease and tooth losshas already been estab-lished, but the relation-ship between bone andtooth loss has only beenfound recently. Some re-searchers and expertsalso suggest that de-creased alveolar bonedensity makes moresusceptible to gum dis-ease, thus increasingother dental health risks.

Oral bacteria and thebody’s immune systemmay break down thebone and tissue thatholds teeth in place.Since the bacteria flour-ishes in the gums, thebody naturally fightsthese, but the gums andteeth may also be af-fected.

To answer these is-sues, research suggeststhat dental X-rays mayhelp as a screening toolfor osteoporosis.

Aside from oral cancerscreening, other dentalexaminations helphealthcare professionalsdetect diseases in otherbody parts. Dental x-rays are found to behighly effective in distin-guishing people with ahigh risk of osteoporosisfrom those with healthierbone density. Dentalconcerns like recedinggums, tooth loss, and ill-

fitting dentures may alsohelp indicate low bonedentistry.

However, treatmentsfor osteoporosis may notbe beneficial to oral anddental health. More re-search and experimentsare necessary to estab-lish the relationship be-tween oral bone lossand osteoporosis. Sci-entists and healthcareprofessionals are hope-ful that efforts to opti-mize bone dentistry willpositive affect dentalhealth.

OSTEOPOROSISAFFECTS YOURDENTAL HEALTH.

A current complexdental issue is the con-cern about osteoporosismedications causinghealthy bone to die. There are things youneed to know if you aretaking these medica-tions. Please ask yourfamily dentist about thisand he will help educateyou on what you need toknow.

There are studies indi-cating the biphospho-nates in osteoporosismedications can causea serious dental condi-tion called “osteonecro-sis” a rare condition inwhich healthy jawbonedies.

Early research showsthat certain cancer pa-tients who take and in-travenousbiphosphonate are morelikely to develop os-teonecrosis than otherpatients. Here is what is impor-

tant for you to know ifyou are taking a biphos-phonate.

Tell us if you take anosteoporosis medica-tion. Having your currentmedical history is criticalwhen we plan your den-tal treatment.

You need regularcheck-ups, especially ifyou will undergo cancertreatments. Regularexams will help us toidentify any unusual oralchanges while they arein their early and mosttreatable stage.

Before you begin anymedical treatment, tellyour physician and on-cologist about dental is-sues. This will help yourmedical team plan yourtreatment and monitorany effects from dentalprocedures we perform.

Tell your doctor if any-thing out of the ordinaryoccurs in your mouth. This includes bleedinggums, pain, an infectionor an unusual sensationin your mouth.

Update your dentaland medical history withyour medical team. When your medical anddental teams have thesame information, wewill all be aware of any-thing that could affectyour dental and overall

health.

YOUR MOUTH CANBE AN INDICATORSome indicators may

be:• Loose teeth• Gums coming de-tached from teeth• Severe gum disease• Dentures that don’t fitwell• Difficulty eating orspeaking

If your Dentist detectsany of these signs, theymay take x-rays, whichcan show the density ofthe jawbone and thebones around the teeth.Over time, x-rays canshow if there is a de-crease in the bone den-sity, which may signifyan advanced stage ofosteoporosis.

As always, please callour office so we can ex-amine you and intercedeearly.
