Italian brand W2 might not be that well known in the UK but they’ve been around since 1985 with their origins in quality off- road gear. These road boots are pretty good, too. There’s nothing too flash – no squeaky hinges or high-tech fasteners. Instead, what you get is sturdy leather construction, hard plastic armour at the heel, ankle and shin and a replaceable magnesium toeslider. They fasten securely with an old-style Velcro and zip combo. They were a bit stiff at first but broke in within a few rides to provide reasonable feel. The multi-colour sole offers decent grip on the pegs, too, and the W2s are fine for walking around when off the bike. What’s not? There aren’t any vents. Also, if you wear them under denim/ Kevlar jeans you may find the top of the boot rubs your inner calf/shin slightly. These are the best riding jeans I’ve worn to date. They’re made from a super-soft stretch denim, which means they don’t ride up or bunch up on the bike. There’s no irritation anywhere from these jeans and they’re great to wear all day. They don’t follow the current trend for slim-fitting jeans, so I’ve had no trouble fitting them over boots. What’s not? Knee and hip armour is optional, and although I have a set of the kneepads, they don’t fit very well in their pockets. The pockets are also too tight – limiting movement and they’re halfway down my shins once in. As with most riding jeans that offer a decent level of protection, things can get a little sweaty when the temperature rises, especially in the areas covered by the protective Kevlar lining. The WD-40 range is designed to cover all elements of cleaning and bike care. You can buy them individually but I tested the full set consisting of: Total Wash, Brake Cleaner, Chain Cleaner, Chain Lube, Chain Wax, Wax & Polish and Silicone Shine. Most did what they said on the tin but the stand out items were the Total Wash (£4.99) and Chain Lube (£6.49). I share a workshop with friends and it didn’t take long for everyone to work out the effectiveness of both of those items and empty them on my behalf. What’s not? There were a couple of items that weren’t as good as the others. The straw on the WD-40 broke and I found the Chain Wax left an uneven coating, which is disappointing as it’s the most expensive item in the kit at £10.49.
