Order of Worship July 5, 2020

Prelude “God of the Ages” — G.W. Warren Welcome (Julie) Call to Worship (Joseph)

PASTOR: God invites all who are weary to come. Come now with the burdens of work, home, and commu-nity. Jesus promises,

ALL: I will give you rest.

PASTOR: God invites all who are weary to come. Come now with the burdens of illness, of fear, of hope-lessness. Jesus promises,

ALL: I will give you rest.

PASTOR: God invites all who are weary to come. Come now with the burdens of anger, of frustration, of prejudice, of alienation. Jesus promises,

ALL: I will give you rest.

PASTOR: God invites all who are weary to come. God invites all who are weary of struggling to choose between good and evil. God invites them to his grace.

ALL: We gather in hope and seek God’s grace.

PASTOR: Come, let us worship. Opening Prayer (Joseph)

PASTOR: God of grace, you created us for good and for the glory of your name. We come to this time and place, feeling raw and vulnerable, struggling to do good. We know that too often we forget the purpose of our being created. We need such assurance because we are so full of a sense of failure — so full of memories of having fallen short, of having let you down. We are so full of compro-mises — so full of poor choices and wrong decisions. We have been cruel and mean. We are full of words we said and wish we had not, as well as full of words we did not say and wish we had. We are so full of it. Fill us with the assurance of your grace — the possibility of being full of you. This we pray in the name of the One full of you, Jesus the Christ. Amen.

ALL: Amen.

Hymn #529 (red, vs. 1-2, 4-5) “How Firm a Foundation”

"How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith in his excellent word!

What more can he say than to you he hath said, to you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?

2. "Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed, for I am thy God and will still give thee aid;

I'll strengthen and help thee, and cause thee to stand

upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.

4. "When through fiery trials thy pathways shall lie, my grace, all-sufficient, shall be thy supply; the flame shall not hurt thee; I only design

thy dross to consume, and thy gold to refine.

5. “The soul that on Jesus still leans for repose, I will not, I will not desert to its foes;

that soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake, I’ll never, no, never, no, never forsake.”

Prayers of the People, Answered Prayers and The Lord’s Prayer #895 (red)

PASTOR: Let us consider the doors of possibility before us, as we pray to move our hearts and our energies beyond the familiar to embrace the reign of God. For all who thirst — whether for water or rela-tionship, for welcome or justice, or merely a place to rest and to be: for this we pray,

ALL: Lord, hear our prayer.

PASTOR: For all who struggle with choices — choices about the beginnings or endings of commitments; choices of choosing between good and evil; choices about what to do with one’s life, and what to do for the sake of others: for this we pray,

ALL: Lord, hear our prayer.

PASTOR: For all on journeys, seeking answer to prayer — for healing or comfort, strength in trying times and joy in shared times, and wisdom and love in all times: for this we pray,

ALL: Lord, hear our prayer.

PASTOR: In silence, let us lift up to God our personal joys and concerns. (pause) Now let us wrap up these and all our prayers in the prayer that Jesus our Lord taught his disciples;

ALL: Our Father, who art in heaven hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Message (John) “We Do It Even Though We Do Not Want to”

Sacrament of Holy Communion #2257 (black) (Joseph)

LEADER: The Lord be with you. ALL: And also with you. LEADER: Lift up your hearts. ALL: We lift them up to the Lord. LEADER: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. ALL: It is right to give our thanks and praise. PASTOR: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Almighty

God, creator of heaven and earth. Before the mountains were brought forth, or you had formed the earth, from everlasting to everlasting, you alone are God. You created light out of darkness and brought forth life on the earth. You formed us in your image and breathed into us the breath of life. When we turned away, and our love failed, your love remained steadfast. You delivered us from captivity, made covenant to be our sovereign God, and spoke to us through your proph-ets. And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

ALL: Holy, holy, holy Lord; God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest! Blest is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest!

Page 4: Aldersgate · 05-07-2020  · MUSI: Early USA melody Prayers of the People, Answered Prayers and The Lord’s Prayer #895 (red) PASTOR: Let us consider the doors of possibility before

PASTOR: Holy are you, God, and blessed is your Son Jesus Christ, in whom you have revealed yourself, our light and our salvation. By the baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection you gave birth to your Church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death, and made with us a new cove-nant by water and the Spirit. On the night in which he gave himself up for us, he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, saying: “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” And when the supper was over, he took the cup, gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, saying: “Drink from this all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” And so in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving, as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ’s offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith.

ALL: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest! PASTOR: Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and wine. Make them

be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood. By your Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory, and we feast at his heavenly banquet. Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy Church, all honor and glory is yours, al-mighty God, now and forever. Amen.

ALL: Amen. Amen. Amen. Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest!

Prayer of Confession and Words of Affirmation (Joseph)

PASTOR: Our Lord invites to his table all who love him, who earnestly repent of their sin and seek to live in peace with one another. Let us draw near with faith, make our humble confession and prepare to receive this Holy Sacrament.

ALL: I do not presume to come to this your table, O merciful Lord, trusting in my own goodness, but in your unfailing mercies. I am not worthy that you should receive me, but give your word and I shall be healed, through Jesus Christ my Lord. Amen.

PASTOR: Hear the good news: Christ died for us while we were yet sinners; that is proof of God’s love to-ward us. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.

ALL: Amen. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.

PASTOR: Amen. Sharing the Bread and Cup Prayer (Joseph)

PASTOR: Thank you, Creator of the universe, for feeding us with the body and blood of your Son, and for the word of assurance in our daily struggles.

ALL: We give you thanks for your grace and for various ways you nourish our lives.

PASTOR: You nourish our lives with your word eternal and assure us of your grace in our daily struggles.

ALL: Grant us trust in your word. May we respect and honor each time and never forget you who provide us all that we need.

PASTOR: May our offerings of money, talents, time, energy and love be used to translate our faith into pro-grams and ministries that bring blessing to all. Amen.

ALL: Amen.

Hymn #526 (red) “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”

1. What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer!

O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.

2. Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged; take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness; take it to the Lord in prayer.

3. Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care?

Precious Savior, still our refuge; take it to the Lord in prayer. Do thy friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer! In his arms he'll take and shield thee; thou wilt find a solace there.

Commissioning and Blessing (John)

PASTOR: In worship, we find assurance and renewal but this is not where we stay. We go ready to greet the struggles of choosing between what is bad and good, but always choosing what pleases God. And knowing that God the Comforter, God the Redeemer, and God the Sustainer is with us always. Amen.

ALL: Amen.
