a man appeared in Dundalk District Court charged in connec-tion with the murder of mum of three Jacqueline McDonough. Michael McDonough (33) was arrested under the Sec-tion 4 Criminal Justice act 1984 in Dublin after presenting himself at the Store Street Garda Sta-tion on august 30.

Thirty-four-year-old Jacqueline Mc Donough was found dead at her home in College Manor last Wednesday night.

Michael McDonough appeared at a special sit-ting of Dundalk District Court on Saturday Sep-

tember 1. Solicitor for Mr McDonough, Cahir Higgins, said that Mr McDonough was a vul-nerable individual and was in need of medical treatment. Judge Denis McLoughlan said he should be examined and given required medical treatment where appro-priate. Mr McDonough was also granted legal aid following a request by his counsel.

Michael McDonough (33) College Manor, Dundalk was remanded in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Count on Friday September 7.

league as the town was found to be clean to eu-ropean norms. Out of 43 towns surveyed Dun-dalk ranked 30, down one place from last year’s position at 29. The surveyors described it as a good result for Dundalk noting that the result was similar to that of 2011 and that other towns by comparison were getting cleaner.

It was a score card of as and Bs for the specif-ic areas surveyed. Six of the ten sites in Dundalk that were surveyed were

moderately littered with the other four receiving top marks. There were no seriously littered sites in Dundalk.

The Clanbrassil Street area got a ‘B’ grade but credited the local au-thorities for the ‘fresh and clean in appearance’ – they cited the “attrac-tive paving, ornamental trees, seating area, fresh bins (with the opportu-nity to separate street litter) as positives. But went on to say “this was combined with an older and greyer streetscape

where the laneway at the northern end was poorly maintained – a more thorough approach to cleaning is required at this stretch.”

Concerns regarding the impact of approach roads on tourists were a concern for many ar-eas, but not Dundalk as the The Carrickmacross approach road was the only approach road in the country to get an a grade.

The residential areas along the Dublin road as far as the Fairways

Hotel were applauded for appearance and in-dividual residents were credited for their contri-bution to the upkeep of the areas DkIT and Dun-dalk Grammar School also scored a grades.

IBaL found that Clarke Station’s overall presentation was good noting in particular Tourist Information, bins, paving, platforms being positive but said it was let down by a scat-tering of of litter – de-spite plenty of litter bins throughout.

SPaCe rock could be lying in your back garden according to astronomy Ireland. On Monday night last at around 11pm people across the east coast spotted a huge meteor blaze accross the sky before bursting into smaller frag-ments.

exceptionally big meteors are known are fireballs and can give out as much energy as an atomic bomb. They can appear to be

close they are usually shooting across the sky at an altitude of about 70km.

Once the asteroid or meteor breaks apart, the fragment fall to earth, with some potentially fall-ing along the east coast.

In 1999, astronomy Ireland de-termined that a meteorite landed in the midlands.

The search for fragments be-gan and parts of the fireball were

found, fetching a price 50 times greater than gold when they were sold.

astronomy Ireland are again saying that the possibility that similar fragments lie unfound on Irish soil following Monday night’s event is high.

To determine the location they ask that people who saw the Fire-ball to report the details on astron-omy.ie/fireball.

THe Dundalk railway Heritage Society in conjunction with na-tional Heritage Week (august 18 to 26) organised a programme of three conducted walking tours of some of the former GnrI work-shops on the ardee road on Sat-urday august 18.

The society were overwhelmed with the public response to the venture with some 110 people, mainly local, but also visitors from Belfast and Bangor n.I, Dublin and the UK turning up to partici-pate.

The three tours which were of approximately one hour duration

were conducted by the well known railway historian Charles Friel from Belfast assisted by two of the society’s committee members, artie McManus and Paddy Wil-liams both of whom had worked in the works prior to it’s closure as the Gnr in 1958.

Chairman of the Dundalk rail-way Heritage Society, Des Casey explained what the tour involved whilst also thanking those who had made the outing possible.

“The tours embraced visits to the bus and lorry garage, the former boiler shop, erecting shop, machine shop and smithy and the

commentaries also referred to the former wagon shop, Loco running shed and general stores depart-ment”, he explained.

“Those who participated, some who worked there, but many who were relatives of former employ-ees were enthralled with the exer-cise, which at times was nostalgic but was nevertheless an important step in the heritage of the Gnr.

“The society are most apprecia-tive of the support and co-opera-tion of ronan Wogan of Furniture Link and Sean Ward of Carragher and Ward, in arranging the event.” concluded Des.

Liam O’neill, Uachtaran CLG will unveil the commemorative plaque prior to throwing the ball in to begin the “retro” style football game on Saturday September 15.

The local players include Paddy Keenan, Peter Fitzpatrick, Seamus O’Hanlon and Shane Lennon, who will be joined by Joe Brolly Trevor Giles, Steven McDonnell and Lar-ry Tompkins among others.

the Cooley Peninsula was a Gaeltacht area rich with native Irish speakers as well as having its own local dialect, songs, poetry and traditional customs. Coláiste Bhríde was a summer Gaelic col-lege inaugurated in 1912 until it moved to rannafast in Donegal in 1926.

The celebrations begin on Fri-day evening in the Gran’ Vue House, Omeath, which will in-clude a lecture on the history of the college by Séan Quigley, Dun-dalk, a performance of songs from the area contemporary with the college itself by Pádraigín ni Ullacháin, Irish dancing and the launch of a commemorative book compiled by Fr. THe 29-year-old Latvian woman who has admitted to shoplifting to take care of her children has been approved for child benefit and also job seekers allowance.

Mother of five Guna Levcenkova with an address at Beechmount Drive, Dundalk faces 12 counts of larceny between July 2010 and January last involving thefts of food and clothes from stores in Dundalk and Drogheda.

She has made several appear-ances before Dundalk Court which heard at the start of the month she received nothing from the state and was awaiting the outcome of appeals for state aid. Her solicitor

Sean T. O’reilly also said she had no desire to engage in shoplifting.

However, she admitted since her previous appearance she was stopped five times by shopkeepers. They appeared to be aware of her circumstances and simply took the goods off her and didn’t notify the Gardai, he said.

She had an eSB bill of over €1,215 and owed approximately €900 rent to her landlord. She had gained seasonal employment and attempted to pay her landlord with the wages she obtained in the legal or black economy. Local people and members of the local Latvian and Lithuanian community provid-

ed her with assistance for which she was grateful, Mr. O’reilly said.

at Thursday’s holiday sitting, Judge William Hamill was told that her application for child benefit was successful, and she was approved for job seekers allowance. Both would be payable next week.

A final adjournment was sought to clarify arrears and compensa-tion which had to be worked out. Progress on these matters could be made on the next date.

Inspector Martin Beggy said that he would be able to provide the amount of loss involved. Judge Wil-liam Hamill adjourned the charges to October 25.

an angry adrian O’Donoghue described the Gaa’s decision as ‘ridiculous’ and vowed to make the event a success with or without the association’s help.

There are issues with large ve-hicles unable to drive down Chapel St and I’ve been told of people fall-ing at the new footpath on Jocelyn St so I’d be hoping to get some in-formation about plans to improve these areas.” added Cllr Doyle.“Basically we are look-ing for clarity on what changes are recom-mended and who is go-ing to foot the bill for the extra work which needs to be done to make the junctions safe for driv-ers and pedestrians”

aS the renovations con-tinue in the Spirit Store excitement is growing around the venue as they announce that Irish pop rockers Bell X-1 are to play on December 15.

The band who recent-ly released their seventh album Field recordings, are taking their acous-tic tour to the US this September and europe in early 2013. But they will return to Ireland be-

fore to finish their tour in what will be a newly renovated venue.

The band’s popularity is as strong as ever hav-ing recently performed to a packed tent at the electric Picnic and the recent offering which was released in July be-ing met with much ac-claim.

The new album is a recording of live ver-sion of songs from the

bands five studio albums from their 2010 Global acoustic Tour.

Tickets go on sale this Friday September 7 on-line and from the Spirit Store which is retaining its cosy atmosphere as the works continue. But they can go very quickly, another renowned Irish act, The Villagers, sold out in only a few days so get in early to avoid disappointment.

AMATEUr Antics will present their first ever Variety Show at Táin Theatre on January 19 and according to co-di-rector Barry Dunne the show will feature acts like Mrs Brown’s Boys, The Muppets, Saturday Night Fever & A Very Potter Musical.

Catherine McCarthy, who has teamed up with Barry to form Amateur Antics added that all the

proceeds will go to sui-cide prevention charity, SoSAD.

If you have an interest in singing, dancing or acting, Barry and Cath-erine would like to hear from you.

“We are not looking for seasoned perform-ers. We just want people who are willing to give it their all and who want to be part of a great show for a great cause. “If you

are a gospel singer, Ama-teur Antics would like to hear from you for a par-ticular act”, explained Catherine.

Auditions and reg-istration for the show will be held on Saturday September 15 upstairs at McGeoughs Bar, ro-den Place from 1.30pm to 5.30pm. Barry can be contacted on 083 3776465, Catherine on 086 3425973.

We love our pets more than ever. They are no longer just a diversion. In fact, they have become like chil-dren in the home for many people. There is no doubt that our pets have become a major part of our lives as they enter-tain us, make us laugh, and love us uncondition-ally.There are many

ways to show your pet how much you appreciate them, and here are just a few ideas as to how you can get the most out of your time you’re your pet.

Spend quality time with them by going for a walk, hanging out in the back yard, playing games with their favourite toys, or snuggling with them as you watch TV.always get them immediate vet-erinary care if you suspect that some-

thing is wrong. If you don’t have a solid relationship with your veteri-narian, work on that for the sake of your pet. In this time of managed human health care, your pets often get better, more consistent, i n d i v i d u a l i s e d care than we do. a respected vet-erinarian is your greatest ally.Feed them healthy food intended for their consump-tion rather than snacks or fatty human foods.Protect them from home hazards and from extremes of weather. They cannot protect themselves.Much of being a responsible pet owner is under-standing what your pet needs and also being

aware of what your responsi-bilities are to the community. Fol-lowing are some basic rules for pet care:Learn about your pet’s special needs - dietary, health, housing and general care;Provide your pet with an adequate balanced diet and ensure it has ac-cess to clean, cool drinking water at all times;regularly ex-ercise your pet according to its needs;Train your pet using kindness and positive rein-forcement;Provide appropri-ate housing and location for your pet;Whilst unsuper-vised, keep your pet safely and se-curely confined to

your property at all times;To minimise bore-dom, provide your pet with sufficient companionsh ip and a stimulating environment;Protect your pet’s health by taking it to a vet whenever health problems arise and by en-suring all neces-sary vaccinations and treatments are up-to-date;To help prevent disease and ill-ness, ensure your pet has a clean environment;Microchip your pet (where appro-priate) and where required register it with your lo-cal council to increase the like-lihood of return when lost;If your pet re-quires grooming, do so on a regular basis;

Many pets need to be socialised with other animals and people, particu-larly at a young age - give your pet appropriate opportunities for mixing with oth-ers;Teach your fam-ily, friends and children how to interact with your pet;Find suitable boarding facili-ties for your pet whilst on holi-days;respect the rights of non pet owners by keeping your pet under control while in public and by disposing of any droppings made in public areas;Provide your pet with love and at-tention and com-mit to caring for it for its entire life.

LaBOUr Senator and Mary Moran hs hit out at the disappointing cover-age of the Paralympics by rTe.

“While rTe’s live coverage of the games in London in august, and in particular the attention surrounding Katie Tay-lor’s outstanding boxing performances gave the country a very welcome

boost, I am disappointed that the same cannot be said of the coverage for the Paralympic games.”

“Indeed coverage of our national perform-ances in the games over the weekend, which saw Ireland secure three gold medals in three hours on Saturday was limited to half an hour’s highlights and was televised late at

night. “Similar sporadic cov-

erage is due to be aired during the week with rTe 2 showing only a half an hour’s high-lights of the games in the evening and indeed no coverage of the games by rTe is scheduled at all for either Tuesday or Thursday”, she said.

The Labour senator

was loud in her praise of the athletes who took part and those who won medals.

“It is fantastic to see our national Paralympic team perform so well, winning four gold three silver and a team bronze over the weekend and securing a top 10 place in the overall medal ta-ble for the games.

DunDalk leaDer 5th September 201222W minion? sobot? obchodzili?my 73 rocznice rozpocz?cia II Wojny ?wiatowej. Pomy?la?am, ?e warto przypomniec sobie szkolne apele z pierwszego dnia rozpocz?cia szko?y.Bo gdy byli?my mali i stali?my na boiskach szkolnych po wakacjach, nie do ko?ca zdawali?my sobie spraw? z ogromu tragedii jaki ro-zpocz?? si? dla naszego kraju, ale i ca?ej Europy oraz pozosta?ych krajów spoza naszego kontynentu, w?asnie 1 wrze?nia 1939 roku.W sobot? jecha?am do Dublina, do przyjació?. By?o s?onecznie choc nieco wi-etrznie i pomy?la?am o moim pradzi-adku, który by? nieco m?odszy ode mnie w 39-tym, mia? ?on? i dwoje dzieci gdy zaskoczy?a ich II wo-jna ?wiatowa. ?yciem. Moja babcia, we wrze?niu 1939 roku mia?a 7 lat, ich gospodarstwo zaj?li niemieccy ?o?nierze, a ona nie widzia?a swoich rodziców, brata i najm?odszej siostry przez kolejne 4 lata, gdy? rozdzielono ich i wys?ano w ró?ne miejsca, z najbli?szej rodziny zosta?a jej tylko 3letnie siostra, któr? musia?a si? za-opiekowac. Im si? uda?o, po wojnie

Let your child walk to schoolDear editor,

The fumes from car ex-hausts have been linked to lung cancer, asthma, COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmo-nary Disease), hindered lung development, post neonatal death, low birth weight, and the aggravation of symptoms in cystic fibrosis.Every morning, the highest concentration of cars can be found around our schools. This brought the question to my mind: are we poisoning our own children?Every kilometre we travel, our cars on average pump 150g pollution into the air. That’s a lot of gunk. None of us would dream of blowing that di-rectly into our kids’ faces, but

it doesn’t occur to us that this is exactly what we’re doing. We congregate in our cars around schools, causing high concentrations of poisonous gases in the air our children then breathe for the next few hours. If our children can walk as little as the last kilometre to school, if we can drop them at parking areas away from the school buildings, it’s entirely possible that the maddening traffic jams we face two or three times a day at present will be a thing of the past. Im-agine how much cleaner the air will be that they are im-mersed in most of the day.Does your child have aller-gies? Asthma? Chances are, we can all help to alleviate their suffering by showing we care, and letting them walk part of the way to school.

Yours,

NaDIa wILLIaMsDundalk Cycling alliance.

letter to the editorodzyskali gospodarstwo, odnale?li si? i przede wszystkim prze?yli. 1 wrze?nia 1939. Ataki by?y przeprowadzone przez bom-bowce nurkuj?ce typu Ju 87B, jest ono przywo?ywane jako przyk?ad bestialstwa i nieuzasadnionego ter-roru niemieckiego lotnictwa[1]. Nalot

Cieszy mnie kontynuacja filmowa serialu “Stawka wi?ksza ni?

Pozdrawiam - Agnieszka Boniewicz.

Vital stage of year for cricket clubThe recent spell of good weather has allowed Dundalk Cricket Club to get back on track after a season punctured with abandoned and postponed games. and it looks like it will be a exciting finish to the season for the club’s two teams as one of the teams is sitting at the top of the Division 9 Table having won six of their last 12 games, four of which had no result.

The team beat Terenure by nine wickets having won the toss and started bowling.

The win propelled the first team to the top of the table and with only one match left against Mullingar on September 15 at home they look set to be

promoted at the end of the season once again.

Dundalk’s recently formed second team are stuggling in their debut season at the bottom on Division 12. But, with three fixtures left, a win in any one of them could see the second team hold position and stay up.

The team have found their fighting spirit and posted an impressive 97 run win over Merrion 7 on Sunday.

The next fixture for Dundalk in Division 12 is Saturday September 8 and both teams are in action on September 15 at the Dromiskin club grounds.
