God commanded. OfferIsaac? Sacrifice hisson? That was hardfor Abraham. Heloved his sonvery much.

But Abraham had learned to trustGod even when hedid not understand.

Before leaving,Abraham split pieces

of wood to make afire for the burntoffering. Abrahamplanned to obey God.

Three days later theyneared the mountain. "Stay

here," Abraham told hisservants. "We will go andworship, and we will come

back to you."

Isaac carried

the wood,Abraham carriedfire -

and

a knife.

"Where is thelamb fora burnt offering?" Isaac

asked. "God will provideHimself a lamb," Abrahamreplied.

The two came totheexact place chosen by

God. There, Abraham builtan altar and arranged thewood to burn the sacrificebefore God.

Abraham had built manyaltars. Surely this one

was the hardest everto build.

Abraham tied Isaac up and placedhis beloved son onthe altar. Was

Abraham really going to obey Godand sacrifice his dear Isaac, hisonly son?

blade glinted asAbraham raisedit high. His

heart may havebeen breaking,butAbraham

knew he mustobey God.

"STOP!"the Angel of

the LORD

shouted."Now I know

you fear God.You have not

held backyour son,your only

son,fromMe."

Seeing a ram in the bushes,Abraham untied Isaac and

sacrificed the raminstead.Perhaps Isaac thought,"God did provide, just

as my father said."

While father and son worshiped, the Angel ofthe LORD

spoke to Abraham. "In your children, all

nations shall be blessed becauseyou obeyed." Someday, Jesuswould be born throughAbraham'sdescendants.

Abraham and Isaac returned home. Some timelater, sadness came. Sarah died. Abraham had

lost his wife, and Isaac had lost his mother.

After the funeral,Abraham sent his chief

servant to look fora wifefor Isaac. The servant went totheir old homelandto find a wife among

Abraham's relatives.

The servant askedGod for a sign. "Let the girl whooffers water for my camels be the rightone for

Isaac." Immediately Rebekah

offered to give themwater. She was one of Abraham's relatives. Theservant knew God had answered his prayer.

Rebekahleft her family to marry Isaac. Shecomforted him after his mother died. How

Isaac loved her!

live in you now,and you will live with Him forever.If you want to turn from your sins, say this to God:

to live for You as Your child. Amen.
