ATCA Hardware platform (1/2) Nokia Siemens Networks ATCA HW platform is based on the Advanced Telecommunications Computing Architecture (AdvancedTCA or ATCA) specifications

The configuration consists of ATCA blades, advanced mezzanine cards (AMC) and rear transmission modules (RTM) housed within an ATCA shelf.

It is possible to install three ATCA shelves into one cabinet.

    ATCA cabinet

    ATCA shelf

ATCA hardware building blocksThe ATCA hardware architecture allows network elements to be created from a set of basic hardware building blocks.- Cabinet: provides enclosure for up to three shelves - PDU: power feed from site power feed to shelf-level power modules- Shelf: provides enclosure, cooling, power and HW management

to blades and RTMs- Blades: (front boards): blades plug into the front side of the shelf.- RTMs: (rear boards): rear transition modules plug into the backside

of the shelf. RTMs are extension modules for blades.

    - AMCs: advanced mezzanine cards plug into the AMC bay of a blade.

All field replaceable units (FRUs) are hot-swappable, meaning that they can be removed and replaced without shutting down the entire unit.

Shelf power feed concept Power distribution units (PDUs)- There are two power distribution units

(PDUs) for each shelf, located between the shelf and the cabinet frame on the rear side of the cabinet.

    - Each PDU has two -48/-60 VDC inputs for the site power feed (protected by 60 A circuit breakers), and four -48/-60 VDC outputs to the power entry module (protected by 30 A fuses). The PDU provides protection against surges and transients in the battery feed cables.

Power entry modules (PEMs)- There are two power entry modules (PEMs)

for each shelf, located on the lower rear side of the shelf. Each PEM provides power terminals for four (25 A) power feeds from its dedicated PDU in the shelf. Each power feed from the PDU to the PEM consists of one physical cable, which includes a -48/-60 VDC conductor and its return conductor.

    - PEMs provide -48/-60 VDC via backplane to the blades, fan modules and shelf managers. AMCs and RTMs receive their power via the blade to which they are connected to.

    - The power feed subsystem is fully redundant: one PDU-PEM pair alone can

    - Shelf managers generate a 3.3 V auxiliary supply voltage to the PEMs, fan modules, shelf alarm panel, shelf alarm display and shelf data modules.

    - Each PEM consists of four power segments (feeds) that share common management, control and supervision functions.

The ACPI2-A supports:- Dual 1000Base-T Ethernet for the base interface- Dual 1000Base-BX Ethernet for the fabric interface- Serial attached SCSI (SAS), connected to the AMCs and RTMs- Additional interfaces such as USB, serial ports, dual IPMB- Dual 1000Base-BX from the backplane fabric interface to the AMC bays- Linux and DMX operating systems

    Ethernet interface

ETHAM-A Ethernet AMC External interfaces to Ethernet networks in Flexi NS are based on

ETHAM-A Ethernet AMC. This means that Ethernet interfaces are connected directly from the computer units without any integrated switches.

It can be used both for user plane (such as up/downlink data) and control traffic (such as O&M).

ETHAM-A is installed into the AMC bay of a ACPI2-A CPU blade, with all packet processing relayed to the CPU blade.

ETHAM-A does not rely on any processor of its own. It has four RJ-45 connectors and can function in 10 Mbit/s (10Base-T), 100 Mbit/s (100Base-TX) or 1 Gbit/s (1000Base-T) mode.

ETHAM-A Ethernet AMC does not contain any software related to network interfaces as it is part of the operating system that runs on the CPU blade.

Hard disk drive carrier AMC (HDSAM-A) The hard disk drive carrier AMC (HDSAM-A) is a mid-size AMC providing serial attached SCSI (SAS) storage in the AdvancedTCA (ATCA) system. The AMC complies with AdvancedTCA and AdvancedMC specifications of the PICMG. The HDSAM-A is equipped in the AMC bays on the CPU blade. The HDSAM-A is equipped with a 2.5-inch small form factor serialattached SCSI (SAS) hard disk drive.

Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) protocol is used as a storage solution. SAS uses serial communication instead of the parallel method found in traditional SCSI devices but still uses SCSI commands for interacting with SAS devices. The maximum data transmission capacity through this interface is 3 Gbit/s. In this solution the hard disks are simply implemented as AMCs which can be shared by two CPU blades using SAS cabling through RTMs.

    Hub Blade

    AHUB2-A

AHUB2-A AHUB2-A Hub Blade implements the LAN switching functionality for both

Base Interface (BI) and Fabric Interface (FI). AHUB2-A is used to connect computer units inside a single shelf together. It is always duplicated within the shelf. It is located in the shelfs physical slots 8 and 9.

The hub blade provides connections for two types of internal networks:- Base interface (BI) switch for the network elements internal traffic (for communication between computer units inside a single shelf)

    - Fabric interface (FI) switch for communicating with the outside world as well as for the network elements internal user data communication (for example, user data transmitted through AMC modules).

Rear transition module ARTM2-A for CPU blade The ARTM2-A ATCA CPU Blade RTM provides additional connectivity for the

CPU blades in the AdvancedTCA system. The ARTM2-A is a singlewidth rear transition module (RTM) which can be equipped into any node blade RTM slot where the CPU blade is located. It is accompanied by the ACPI2-A and controlled by the unit computer of the ACPI2-A (it can not be used without ACPI2-A). In Flexi NS it implements redundant SAS HDD and switchover connections of 2N units (OMU and MCHU). In other units ACPI2-A operates without ARTM2-A.

The ARTM2-A can be used for:- SAS disk cross-sharing: redundant CPU blades can access each other's hard disks- wired alarms- providing a serial port connection for the blade

Interconnection of blade, RTM, AMC and backplane

The hardware implementation of functional units in ATCA HW Platform is based on blades, RTMs and AMCs. Their interconnection is presented in the figure.

The blade is connected directly to the backplane and the RTM Zone 1 connectors are used for power connection, testing and hardware management. Zone 2 is reserved for the data transport through fabric and base interfaces. Zone 3 provides I/O interconnection between blade and RTM.

The RTM is connected only to the blade (it has no direct connection to the backplane). The CPU Blade has

two AMC slots in front panel.
