The first 10B NMR studies, using modern pulsed techniques, on some borate glasses and crystals were performed. To do so a novel field-stepping system was employed at the University of Warwick in the UK. The three spectra on the right (top to bottom) are from two glasses: boron oxide and cesium borate, and crystalline lithium metaborate. The theoretical fits are superimposed. This technique offers the promise of much improved sensitivity in determining glass structure as it is some thirty times more sensitive than traditional 11B MAS NMR. Work is in progress on making precise measurements of various intermediate range structures found in glass.

Education: During the past two summers more than 30 Coe undergraduates participated in this research along with 4 REU students. Recent graduates have gone to graduate school at Univ of Minnesota, Penn State, Univ of Missouri-Rolla, Harvard, Stanford, Northwestern and others. Students in 2006 have done collaborate work at Univ of Manitoba (Canada) and Univ of Warwick (UK). Students also attended a plethora of national and international conferences, gave presentations, and co-authored a large number of journal articles. Students from Japan and England camt to Coe this past summer. Dr. Tim Williams of Jasco, Inc. also joined us in research.

Outreach: Students and faculty participated in numerous outreach programs including hosting three high school students in summer research, working with students at local schools, and performing physics demonstrations for more than 800 students and parents at an open house. Also, the Iowa Glass Conference was run at Coe for more than 35 people from Iowa State Univ., Creighton Univ., Univ. Missouri-Rolla, Univ. of Warwick (UK), and Tsukuba Univ. (Japan).
