75th AnniversaryOf Cathedral'sVirgin Statue

A visitor t·o Ireland is oftensurprised when all activity in ahotel lobby suddenly comes toa halt only to realize that aclock is striking and everyoneis silently praying the Angelus.A visitor to downtown Fall Rivermight also be surprised to seesomeone pausing briefly with'head -bowed in prayer on busySecond Street.

The object of this devotion isthe statue of Our Lady ofLourdes standing on the lawnoutside the Lady Chapel of St.Mary's Cathedral. The statuewhich has had a special place inthe affection of Fall River Catholics for seventy-five years wasobtained in France by the Rev.Christopher Hughes and erected,as the inscription on the granitebase says in memory of the Rev.Edward Murphy and all deceasedbenefactors _ of St. Mary'sChurch. Father Murphy who waspastor of St. Mary's from 1840to 1887 began the building of thepresent Cathedral Church in1852.

The dedication of the statuetook pla~e on Thanksgiving Day,November 29, 1900. A parade ofreligious and civic societies including a platoon of policemen, members of the Holy Name So-

.cieties of St. Mary, St. Louis andSS. Peter and Paul parishes, theSacred Heart Cadets, the An·cient Order of Hibernians andthe Cercle Montcalm marched inreview before ·Bishop MatthewHarkins of Providence who earlier in the day had administeredConfirmation to almost threehundred children and adults atSt. Mary's. The sermon at thededication ceremony, which accounts say was witnessed by almost five thousand people, wasdelivered by.the Rev. Joseph McDonough, a native of St. Mary'sParish and 'pastor of St. MichaelChurch in Providence.

Following the sermon a groupof little girls dressed in white, representing the choirs of angelsmarched from the vestry-led byMiss Esther Elizabeth Gilliganwho unveiled the statue whichBishop Harkins solemnly blessed.

The seventy-fifth anniversaryof the blessing of Our Lady'sStatue will be observed on Sunday afternoon May 11, when atthe conclusion of this year's annual parish May Procession thestatue will be solemnly crowned.

Msgr. John J. Regan, Rectorof St. Mary's Cathedral, cordially invites everyone to join thepriests and parishioners of St.Mary's Parish in taking part inthe May Procession and Devotions which will begin at 1:45.

Well, th~ Church is not dead,it is not a mere carcass awaitingto be buried by the so-calledsophisticates of the would-bemodern press. It is alive and wellin each and every member, men, women and children who are alsocitizens of communties, taxpayers of towns and readers ofnewspapers. They have religiousrights and obligations as Catholics; they have constitutionalfreedoms and liberties as citizens. To defend· their freedoms andliberties while upholding theirmoral and religious convictionsis the founding guarantee of eachand every citizen of this land, inc!uding members of the Catholic Church.

It is about time that Catholicsonce more become aware thatthere I are many who would yetrelegate them to a second classcitizenship. It is also about timethat those who continue to evidence their personal and privateprejudice against the CatholicChurch by means of the publicmedia realize that they cannotescape effective response andpositive action. This coming Sunday is the Church's World Communications Day. Marking the occasion with a message, PopePaul has asked the media to give the Church what she isentitled to expect, truthful reporting on her teachings, aspirations and life.

He admonished against concentration on human degredation and warned against the manipulation of facts andof audiences.

The Pope is much aware, as all should be, of the greatpower of communications for good-and, through lack ofresponsibility, for evil as well.

Food Problems AnsweredThirty-two members of the American Association for

the Advancement of Science will publish articles tomorrowin the magazine Science in which they will voice optimismconcerning the world's capacity to meet its food needs.Fred H. Sanderso~ of Brookings Institution will write that"The historical record lends support for the more optimisticview" that needs can be met for many years "without adramatic increase in CO$ts." He continues that the foodproblems of the last three years became a crisis that never

. should have happened."The crisjs could have been avoided if the United States

(and other grain-exporting countries) had been moreprudent."

The scientists do not minimize the problems faced inmeeting the world's need for food, but find hope in research, technology and development of untapped and underutilizedresources.

Dr. Sylvan H. Wittwer, director of the Michigan Agricul~ural Experiment Station, says that "Despite a growingpopulation and increasing demands of that population forimproved diets, .it appears that the world is not close touniversal famine. That people are malnourished or starvingis a question of distribution, delivery ,and economics, notagricultural limits."

The noted Jean Mayer, professor of nutrition at Harvard, offers a blueprint for relief management and calls forstrong direction by one person, clear data on the needs thatcome up In various areas of the world, prompt action onsupplies and careful prescription of appropriate diets forthose in need.

The writers feel that the one great contribution is tofocus in one place a large fund of information for the useof others.

Various suggestions have been given by the scientistsimprovement of the nitrogen-fixation capacity throughwhich plants can draw part of their food from the air;improvement of fodder and the fertility of livestock thatfeed on it; even such a simple measure as the control ofpests; storage of water and new methods of irrigation;increased use of fertilizers; better means of transportationof food from surplus regions to areas of need.

One interesting sidelight of the story is that it wasput on· an inside page. And there will undoubtedly be astrange silence from those who have been shrieking onpage one that the world is faced with immediate starvation.

There is an answer to this, of course. Those who havebeen using the food problems of the world to push forcontraception are losing an argument that they have beenpushing, and trying to panic people with, for a long time.

Pilgrims EstimatedAt One Million

VATICAN CITY (NC) - Vatican Radio annuonced April 14that about one million pilgrimsvisited Rome during the firstquarter of 1975, according toestimates based on figures fromthe Holy Year Central Committee.

The committee stated that600,000 pilgrims had. checked inofficially through various agencies that handle pilgrims.

Since this figure ,docs not in·c1ude pilgrims traveling independently, it would not be anoverestimate to say that one million in all had already come toRome, said Vatican Radio.

This, the broadcast noted, wasmuch higher than the 210,521officially checked in for the firstquarter of the 1950 Holy Year.

And Whereas:In light of the conviction that

human life begins at conception,a fact strongly supported by scientific evidence, and ·because ofthe high value placed on the lifeof each and very human being, the Church has always prohibited direct abortion as a morallyevil act.

Be It Further Resolved That:The Fall River Diocesan Coun

cil of Catholic Women expressesthe hope that Senator Kennedyand his colleagues will soon declare themselves in favor of anamendment to the Constitutionwhich would offer the strongestpossible protection of theunborn.

And Whereas:It is increasingly clear that the

only effective way to provide legal protection for the unborn isto amend the Constitutionwherein safeguards of the Constitution extend to the unborn atevery moment of his or her existence from· conception onward.

And Whereas:A measure of protection for

unborn human life was offeredin the Amen.dment proposed bySenator Dewey Bartlett to Senate Bill 66, whereby spending taxmoney for abortions would havebeen prohibited;Be It Therefore Resolved That:The Fall River Diocesan Coun

cil of Catholic Women of theNational Council of CatholicWomen expresses its chagrin anddismay that Senator Edward M.Kennedy of Massachusetts, heretofore having represented himself as a champion of human life, tragically and deplorably assumed a position of positive advocacy for the advancement ofabortion by vigorously opposingthe "Bartlett Amendment."

The Fall River Diocesan Council of Catholic Women is by nomeans comforted by our Senator's reiteration of his personalopposition to abortion, since hehas been elected to protect therights of all, including the unborn;

RESOLUTIONWhereas:

The Fall River Diocesan Coun-

On April 10, 1975, Senate Bill66 was called up for debate onthe floor of the Senate.

A lengthy debate ensued onthe so-called Bartlett Amendment, Senator Edward M.Kennedy, who is a resident ofthe Fall River Diocese and theSenior Senator from Massachusetts, astonished seasoned observers of Senate activity by assuming the leadership role ineliminating the Bartlett Amendment from the bill.

Here is what the WashingtonPost reported under the headlines, "Kennedy Backs. AbortionAid." Senator Edward M. Kennedy yesterday lead a Senatefloor fight against an amendment that would cut off federalMedicaid funds for abortions, even though he said he personally opposes abortions. The antiabortion measure was defeatedwhen a motion to tablerit passed,54-36. Kennedy's position was asurorise.

Pro-abortion lobbyists saidthey were not even sure hewould vote against the amendment, let alone lead the opposition. Kennedy never before hastaken a strong .stand on theabortion issue.

The Boston Herald-AmericanrepONed the story under theheadline, "Kennedy Leads Successful Fight to Defeat AntiAibortion Measure," while theBoston Globe contained a storyunder the headline, "KennedyLeads Defeat of the Anti-Abortion Provision." (All newspapersreferred to were published Friday, April 11, 1975.)

In view of the position takenon this amendment by the SeniorSenator, a resident of our diocese, I hereby offer this Resolution. Before doing so I wouldlike to clarify any misinterpretation of this sl:atement.

This in no way, and I repeatno way, should be interpreted asa personal attack on the integrity of our Senior Senator butonly on his position regardingthis matter so vital and important to "human life."

GUEST SPEAKER AT DCCW CONVENTION: Rev. Richard H. Sullivan, CSC, for-mer president of Stonehill College and guest speaker at the 22nd Annual Convention, discusses Saturday's meeting in the Taunton Catholic Middle School with Mrs. HarryLoew of Attleboro, second vice-president of the DCCW; Mrs. Redmond O'Callahan ofPocasset, third vice-president and Mrs. George King of Vineyard Haven, a delegate fromthe Cape and Islands District.

Continued from Page One"'rough estimates" arrived at bythe Department of' Health, Education and Welfare and revealedby the Ad Hoc Committee in De·fense of Life. •

Chief Justice Warren E. Burger recently commented regarding the issue of abortion. "Suchmoral and social issues shouldbe decided by the representationof all the American people ratherthan by a handful of judges. Hecontinued: "My view is that under our constitutional system, the elected representativesshould make these basic decisions not tenured judges whocannot be rejected -by the peopleas can Senators and members' ofCongress." .

We, as Catholic women, whoare committed to the preservation of life as sacred from themoment of conception, have concluded that the most viable manner of confronting the pro-abortion bias so prevalent in societytoday is the process of amending the Constitution of the United States with what is describedas a "Human Life" Amendment. ,

Such a human life amendmentwould, in view of the scientificevidence that human life beginsat conception, invest unborn human life with all Constitutionalguarantees and rights. Vigorouspreliminary efforts are presentlybeing made to organize nationalsupport for a human life amendment. There is no present formula which is preferred. Themovement to amend the Constitution in this fashion is still inearly stage of development.

Against this background, weshould all be aware that Senator Edward M. Kennedy introduced in the Senate a piece oflegislation, Senate Bill 66, theNursing Revenue Sharing andHealth Service Act of 1975 whichalso includes re-authorization forcontinued funding of the FamilyPlanning and Population Research Act.

Senator Dewey Bartlett, fromOklahoma proposed an amendment to Senate Bill 66 which became known as the BartlettAmendment.

Senator Bartlett's amendmentwould have prohibited the useof federally funded money forabortions. May I repeat 270,000abortions, 28 per cent of allabortions in the U.S.A. totallingbetween 40 and 50 million dol-

. lars of federal money, our taxo dollars.

The Lebanese-born prelate, whose resignation was acceptedby,\the Melkite-rite Patriarchageof Antioch last year, warned thedialogue group that "greed forthe temporal has corrupted ourvision."

While the priesthood and theEucharist were instituted byChrist at rthe Last Supper, itseems to me that the apostles'acceptance of their ministry, and possibly their ordination, happened at Pentecost, whenthey were filled with the Spirit.

If that is so (and it's just myopinion) then "the women andMary, the ,mother of Jesus" whowere present with them, accord·ing to the Acts of the Apostles, may also have been ordained atthat time. I don't know how wecan be sure about this.

The unusual two-day conference, attended by about 30 persons, was held under auspices ofthe Graymoor Ecumenical, Institute -here in New York on thetopic "Can the Christian Churches be a Force of Reconciliationin the Middle East?" Most ofthe participants, representing aspectrum of Christian religiousinterests in the Holy Land, wereProtestant leaders.

Archbishop Rava gave theprincipal address..On the secondday the discussion was led byJames Wall, editor of ChristianCentury, an interdenominationalChristian weekly.

"The Holy Land, which shouldbe the womb of fraternal love, for friend and foe alike, hasbeen instead a battlefield withforeign Christian pitted againstlocal Christian, as well as Christian against non-Christian,"Arohbishop Rava declared. "Thebirthplace of the Mystical Bodyof Christ, which binds each ofus to his brother, has been aseething cauldron of jealousy, competition, and bigotry."

We can be sure, however, that"the women and Mary, themother of Jesus" were not wearing NOW button's when the HolySpirit visited them on Pentecost.-Bishop Maher may be able totake comfort from that.

First Priests

Married"The last few weeks have been rough on Catholic

women. First Bishop Maher of San Diego issued a pastoralletter directing his priests to refuse the Eucharist to members of the National Organization for Women (NOW), andnot allow them to proclaimthe word of God as lectors.Next, Pope Paul made aspeech in which he statedthe Church could never ordainwomen to the priesthood because none of the apostles wasa woman.

I'm not a member of NOW,and I have no desire to becomea priest. (My husband 'Says hecan tolerate being introduced asMr. Mary Carson, but he absolutely rejects the thought ofcalling me "father.")

However, I do think these tworecent actions deserve comment.

The priesthood was institutedby Christ at the Last Supperwhen He told the apostles to"Do this in remembrance of Me."It's true there were no womenpresent.

It's also ,true there were sin·ners present at that first Mass. The celebrant, Christ Himself, knew it. He knew Judas plannedto betray Him. He knew Peterwould deny Him.

In spite of this knowledge,Christ offered everyone theEucharist at that first Mass.He even offered the ministry toall twelve. I see no resemblancebetween ·Christ's actions at theLast Supper and Bishop Maher'spastoral letter.

And it's also hard for me tounderstand why ordination mustbe limited to men because therewere no women at the LastSupper. '

There were no Italians thereeither. Or Irishmen. None ofthose in' attendance were welleducated. Yet today the priesthood is conferred on those whoare celibate, well-educated, andof good character. None of thesequalifications were necessary formembership among the apostles.

To be ordained, to receiveHoly Orders', the candidate mustintend to accept the ministryoffered by the ordaining bishop. It's apparent to me that Christoffered the ministry to the apostles at ·the Last Supper. But i,t is'much less clear that they accepted it then and there. Onedenied, one betrayed . . . andwhat of the others?

free fashion show.Just as before neutrals were

the thing, but here not so manypants as longer ·skirts were inview. They ·are really becomingif everything is in proportion, and here it was. SCarfs accentednecklines and longer jacketstopped these skirts.

I even saw a few hats andthey looked equally chic.

One conclusion I came toafter watching this in-townfashion display was that sportswear is a very important partof every woman's wardrobe. Inoted that coordinates made upmost of the looks on the welldressed women.

An advantage of this, and alsothe great use of neutrals is thata skirt, jacket and slacks canlead a very busy life mixing andmatching with one another.

I had two occasions this past weekend to observe thefashion scene as a people watcher. I had stayed overnightin Boston and then spent an hour or so the next morningwaiting for someone I was meeting in my hotel lobby.Lobby watching is great fun-you can try to guess countries and even states by accents and appearances ofweary travelers. I had a goodchance to observe female travelers those who were fresh asthat daisy and those who werevery wilted.

Apart from the "hurry up andwait" aspect of life in the Guamrefugee camp, Sister Eleanor paidhigh tribute to the efficiency ofthe American military in settingup accommodations for thousands of people in a matter ofhours. "We were in an areacalled 'Tin City' that had beenused for American airmen. It hadbeen deactivated and all furnish.ings removed just a few weoksbefore the refugees arrived, andeverything had to be put backwith almost no notice. It wasastonishing how smoothly thingswent."

Sister Eleanor is uncertainabout the future of Catholic Relief Services in Vietnam andCambodia. "Those were our twolargest overseas operations andwe really don't know what's go·ing to happen." She doesn't feel, however, that anti-American sentiment would hinder resumptionof activities, should governmentapproval be forthcoming.

. "The man in the street isn'tanti-American, no matter whatthe government position may be,and I personally experienced nohostility," she declared.

Her immediate concern is tomake certain the three refugeesshe escorted to this. country areestablished in their new life. Then she will take a much-need·ed rest while awaiting a newassignment.

are supporting the farm workersin their struggle to achieve thislegitimate goal. If the churcheswere to walk away from thisstruggle and were to desert thefarm workers in their hour ofneed, they would rightly be accused of ,having violated theirown principles of justice andequity. In the case of the Catholic Church, these principles, asthey relate to the subject oftrade unions and collective bargaining, were restated by theSecond Vatican Council:

Among the basic rights of thehuman person must be countedthe- right of freely founding labor unions. These unions shouldbe truly able to represent theworkers and to contribute to theproper arrangement of economiclife. Another such right is thatof taking part freely in the activity of these unions without .risk of reprisal. Through thissort of orderly participation, joined with an ongoing formationin economic and social matters,'all will grow day by day in theawareness of their own functionand responsibility. Thus theywill be brought to feel that according to their own propercapacities and aptitudes theyare associates in the whole tasKof economic and social development and in the attainment ofthe universal common good.

Ultimate MeansWhen, however, socioeconom

ic disputes arise, efforts must bemade to come to a peaceful settlement. Recourse must always.be had above all to sincere dis'cussion between the parties.Even in present-day circumstances, however, the strike can

,still be a necessary, though ultimate, means for the defense ofthe workers' own rights and thefulfillment of their just demands. As soon as possible, however, ways should be sought to resumenegotiations and the discussionof reconciliation.

We are not only hopef.ul butconfident that this will happenbecause we have faith in· thegood sense and good judgmentof the American people and theirdetermination, on the eve of thenation's bicentennial, to standup for the principle of libertyand justice for all-the basicprinciple of our Declaration ofIndependence and our Constitution.

"Americans," as one historianof the farm labor movement hasphrased it, "are sometimes tolerant of unfairness for longperiods of time. They are capable of selfishness, prejudice, and other human failings. Butthe value system of the UnitedStates stresses the very qualitiescalled for by the farm labormovement: freedom of association, self-determination, fairplay. It is always to the advantage of any social movement if,rather than demanding a wholenew set of social values, it askssociety simply to live up tothose which it already professes."

This is precisely what the dis-

The farm workers of this country have carried on anon-violent _struggle for more than ',10 years against tremendous odds to achieve the right to self-determination,the right to be represented by a union of their own choice- a right which has longsince been guaranteed totheir fellow workers in everyother major industry.. Theend of the struggle is not insight. .

In an effort to help farmworkers achieve these rights, the

major U. S. religious grollPsCatholic, Protestant and Jewish-are participating this weekin Farm Labor Week.

The continuing support whichthe churohes and synagogues aregiving to the farm workers hasled to the charge that they areprejudiced against the otherparties involved in the farmlabor dispute. Nothing could befurther from the truth. The numerous church organizations involved in this dispute havenothing against the ether parties. Their sole purpose is tohelp the farm workers achievethe right to organize into a union of their own choosing.

Once this right has been effectively guaranteed, the religious organization will do everything they possibly can, in aspirit of reconciliation, to promote a ·constructive working relationship between the UnitedFarm Workers Union and thegrowers, on the one hand, and,on the other hand, between theUFW _and a rival union whichhad laid claim to the UFW'sjurisdiction. The history of laborrelations makes it abundantlyclear, however, that this kindof relationship; which is longoverdue in the agricultural industry, cannot be establisheduntil the workers themselves ar~

granted the right to self-determination and have acquiredenough economic power to enable them to bargain as equalswith their employers.

Basic IssueIn defending the UFW, then,

we are conscious of the fact-asone experienced writer has putit-that chosing up sides as between "good guys" and "badguys" avoids the basic issuein the current agricultural laborcrisis. The basic issue is thatfarm workers have a right toorganize into a union of their·own choosing and that no otherunion or group of growers shouldbe permitted to interfere withthe untrammeled exercise of thisright.

It should come as no surpriseto anyone ,that church groups

FR. CARL J. PETER

Plan InstituteIn Theology

Most Rev. Daniel A. Cronin,S.T.D., has announced the second annual theology institute forthe clergy of the Diocese of FallRiver. It will be conducted during the week of May 12-16 atLaSalette Center for ChristianRenewal, Attleboro.

Rev. Carl J. Peter, Ph.D., STD,professor of systematic theology,at Catholic University, Washington will have as his' theme, "theCultivation of Faith and Hope."

Father Peter, a priest of Omaha, Neb., was ordained in 1957.He studied at the Gregorian University in Rome and receivedhis Ph.D. at the University ofSt. Louis.

Former assistant Vice-Rectorat, the North American College,Rome is former president of theCatholic Theological Society ofAmerica and was a peritus forfiv:e Episcopal delegates to theSynod of Bishops in 1971.

into God's world, letting Him, asjot were, be God, and not attempting that role oUI'selves. We ~

think, we see, but in many re,spects we are blind. We mustopen our eyes to reality;

All our faculties must be converte!!. Our imagination must beengaged in "the spaciousness ofthe Gospel." Our emotional powers must develop and maturein the context of faith. Our appetites and desires must behealed, made whole, and rootedin the one basic need--of God.We must learn how to desirerightly, realizing that we cannotlea.rn to love God by learningnot to love.

We must lirow in instinctivesensitivity to God's will. Hewants us to want what Hewants. By so doing we becomea different sort of person, onealways at,tuned to God. As thisoccurs, we shall make progressin prayer.

Father Tugwell has drawnheavily on the Fathers of theChurch, on the 1:aints and thegreat theologians. He has thusput together a wealth of wisdom, and he has built upon it a soundand often striking argument.

As this proceeds, he spices itwith provocative. comment:;. Hesays, for example, that when weconfine SrJd WIthin the lImit>: ofour own con;;;;pts, we are guiltyof idolatry. mysticism, but what he calls"that authentic experience. ofGod which should be a normalreality in the life of everyChristian."

How bring it about? Amongthe means discussed is the Charismatic Renewal.' The Cardinalhas subjected this to searchingexamination at first hand. Hefinds it to be genuine and ofsingular value He approvinglyquotes this description: "Itseemed . . . an adult refirmation and renewal of (the) sacraments, an opening of ourselvesto all their sacramental graces."

Nothing absoutely new, therefore, but a new 'opening of selfto the light and leading of theHoly SpirIt. The Cardinal goes onto treat of prayer groups, communities, pa.rishes, marriage en·counters, ecumenical endeavor-all influenced by CharismaticRenewal. '

While holding that this is aninCOmparable blessing for theChurch and offers rich promisefor organic Christian unity andChristian effectiveness in theworld, he insists on the Church'sright to judge and to regulatein true supernatural prudence.

There is an especially perceptive and beautiful chapter on th~

Holy Spirit and Mary, which ifstudied and acted upon, couldlead to a powerful renewal ofMarian devotion.

Of himself the Cardinal says,"I have now come to a clearerrealization that Christianity isnot an 'ism,' but a Someone. Andthat Someone is the living Jesus. At the same time I felt ... that 1was being asked to open myselfmore to Him, in a readine~s forprayer. And prayer is becomingmore a listening to Him: to hearHis voice, look upon His face."

Ready for PrayerReadiness for prayer is the

subject of "Prayer: Ljving withGod" by Father Simon Tugwell,O.P. (Templegate, 719 E. AdamsSt., Springfield, Ill. 62705. 144pages. $5.95).

,People complain that they donot know how to pray, and manyare on the lookout for some surefire method, some easy manualof instructions. But most of thetrouble lies in their being unprepared, improperly disposed, forprayer. Father Tugwell's excellent book is· almost entirelygiven to showing what readinessfor prayer is and requires.

Clement of Alexandria, in thethird century, defined prayer askeeping company with God."Enlarging on this, Father Tugwell says, "Prayer is not anotherpart for us to act, another skillfor us to master, another subjectto study for examination: it is arelationship, and a relationshipwith God."

New Pentecost IsCardinal Suenens has put the title of his new book in

question form: "A New Pentecost?" (Seabury Press, 815Second Ave., New York, N.Y. 10017. 239 pages. $7.95). Theanswer to the question is "Yes!" The Cardinal maintainsthat a new Pentecost is needed, is possible and is takingplace. It obviously is needed. As the author remarks, pessimism and a sense of defeatare prevalent, and even Christians incline to be gloomy. Headmits that he himself has beendownhearted in recent y-,ears.There were reasons for that.

It was a time of "denial ofJesus as the unique Son of God"and of "refusal to accept theChurch as the sacrament of salvation." Moreover, "a tidal waveof immorality swept through theworld: the mass media broughtinto the limelight the moral decadence of our age, and a permissive society reacted not atall, while too many Christians,by saying nothing, lent theirsupport, so anxious were they toappear. broadminded." ,

Also there was a decline in religious practice, along with adrop in vocations, the departureof priests and religious, andyoung people's abandonment ofthe Church.

But reflection and observation, convinced Cardinal Suenens thatall the negative indicators shouldnot be allowed to stifle Christianhope. In a final section of hisbook, .he writes, "The Lord isnear, God is not dead, Jesus isalive, the Spirit is faithful: inthe heart of our 20th century,~entecost remains' a reality."

The body of the book detailsthe grounds for such a conclusion. Much of it has to do withthe attaining of a fresh realization of the presence and activityof the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is characterized as the life-breath of theChurch. He animates the Churchand gives it "the visible meansand mechanisms of its structure." The Church, to functionproperly, must listen and besubmissive to the Holy Spirit.

Ther;e' is an historical review, which begins with the Church inthe Apostolic Age and comesdown to Vatican II and it,s aftermath. Here the author indicatesthe working of the Holy Spiritin successive periods of theChristian era. He notes thatthere are 252 references to theHoly Spirit in the documents ofVatican II.

Coming to present particulars,the author devotes a chapter tothe ~oly Spirit and iit:lrgical re)~cwal, .:her: considers Christian;;-·~-~·oerierl.c2 cfGcd. ~;~ere :5 .:_-":~.::ter -"::c~e'c -;.viti'-: :'j{::ic~'.lti2S 02~

hood shines forth like a dazzlinglight in the midst of the "ordinariness" of the setting and thework of a priest's daily life. Themovie doesn't teH you how im:portant and how rewarding isthe ministry; it simply shows thework of the priest and lets youdraw your own conclusions. Butit is a subtle, unobtrustive portrait of the "power and theglory" of the priesthood, and ithas an effect that is ultimatelyoverwhelming.

Aids Stronger FaithOnce the most respected of

men, the priest has lost a lotof his "image" because of· thewell-publicized resignations ofthe past decade and the bizarrebehavior of some priests. TheMadison film goes a long waytoward restoring that imageat least for the priest himselfand probably for most lay peoplewho will see it. You realizeeither for the first time or allover again (and they come tothe same thing)-what a priestdoes and what his work :means. You understand the origin of theimage, however distorted it hasbecome. The film, "Priest-Man,"was not intended as a "vocation"film, but it is of infinitely greatermerit for "vocation work" thanads in "Time" or "Playboy."

At least one priest and onelayman came away with theirfaith and hope much strongerafter seeing the movie-and 1don't think we are all that untypical.

1 must not-pay the Bishop ofMadison any embarrassing compliments, lest he call me at nightand tell me what he thinks ofsuch flattery in his characteristically colorful language.

But 1 asked the youthful director of "Priest·Man" whether hehad showed it to his bishop.

. "Yes," he replied. "I wanted himto like it, not so much becausehe is a bishop but because he iswho he is."

Like 1 say, 1 wouldn't dare tosay anything in print that wouldsound like a compliment to theBishop of Madison.

young priests, I figured that ithad to be better than most suchefforts, and besides, if the Bishop of Madison asked a favor ofme, he had more than a fewcoming.

1 was not in the mood. Myown anniversary (twenty-oneyears, heaven save us) wasdrawing near, and 1 was morethan ever acutely conscious ofmy own failures in the priesthood. (Please don't write meletters on the subject. When youare a failure, you know it.) 1did not want to be reminded ofwhat I had set out to be andhow far short of that 1 havefallen.

So I dragged my colleague,Bill McCready (who has considerable photographic talents ofhis own), into the office towatch the Madison film with me.

'Must' for LaymenNeithe.r one of us knew wheth

er to cry or laugh from the firstscene (a High Club picnic) untilthe last. We settled for laughing, but it was a close choice. FatherSteve Umhoefer and his cameraman have put together amovie on the priesthood that isprobably worth a couple of retreats for any priest who sees it.It is a must for lay people whosecontacts with the clergy go beyond the Sunday mass.

The film is absolutely devoidof romanticism imd sentimentality. It does not glamorize thepriest or his work. It it not anexercise in high-pressure salesmanship like tile old vocationfilms. It does not preach.

It presents all the loneliness, frustration, bafflement, and discouragement (one shot of apriest collapsing into a chair after Sunday mass is sheer genius)of the priestly ministry. It doesnot lean over backwards tostress the "humanity" of tr..epriest, as have some recent sensational books and articles. Atthe end you have no doubt thatthe priest is as frail and ordinarya human being as anyone else.

Yet the ministry of the priest-

Madison Movie RestoresTrue Image of Priesthood

Who heard of a movie made from a bishop's pastoralletter? I am mostly skeptical of the media work of enthusiastic young clerics and nuns-not because I doubt the powerof visual media but because most of what I have seen isa combination of radical'chic, posing, and exhibitionism. However, we 'ChicagoIrish know about loyalty tofrienlls. When the ·Bishop ofMadison asked if I would bewilling to see a movie on thepriesthood made by one of his
