Band Camp Arrival & Schedule A tentative Band Camp schedule is located on pages 5 and 6 of this newsletter, but initially note the following arrival dates for the start of Band Camp. Saturday, August 12—*Graduate Assistants, Drum Majors, and Section Leaders. Sunday, August 13—Drumline, Color Guard, Feature Twirlers, and New Members. Monday, August 14—Veteran Members. *Note that you will need to arrange your own housing for this day, as the residence halls do not open until Sunday, August 13. Band Camp is REQUIRED for participation in Marching Mizzou so please read the schedule carefully and prepare yourself accordingly for all scheduled events. Please notify the band office if you are marching with a drum corps this summer. All drum corps members are expected to be in attendance as soon as possible following the completion of DCI Finals on Saturday, August 12. If you are participating in Sorority Rush, which runs concurrently with our Band Camp, be aware that there is an alternative rush schedule for Marching Mizzou members (see page 9 of this newsletter). The Band Office and the Office of Greek Life jointly prepared this special schedule to maximize participation in both groups. Please indicate on the response form (page 18) if you are participating in sorority rush. If you have any questions regarding the schedule do not hesitate to contact the Band Office at (573) 882-3438. Finally, prepare yourself for another hot and humid mid-Missouri summer. If you have been working indoors all summer, you need to begin acclimating yourself to the Missouri heat and humidity so please begin to spend some time outdoors. To ensure your comfort during Band Camp BRING THE FOLLOWING ITEMS: sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher), hat/visor, sunglasses, water bottle, loose comfortable clothing, tennis shoes, etc.

Drumline, Color Guard, & Feature Twirlers All Drumline, Color Guard, and Feature Twirlers members may check into their residence halls beginning at 9:00a.m. on Sunday, August 13. Your first rehearsal begins at 1:00p.m. at Loeb Hall.

New Members & University Owned Instruments New Members will report to the Missouri Theatre at 7:00p.m. (located across from Missouri United Methodist Church on 9th Street) on Sunday, August 13 for an introductory meeting where you will be introduced to Director of Marching Mizzou, Dr. Knopps, Assistant Director of Marching Mizzou, Dr. Zambito, the Graduate Students, Drum Majors, and Section Leaders. The purpose of this meeting is to welcome you to campus and Marching Mizzou, go over information regarding Band Camp, the upcoming season, and to explain what is expected of you as a member of Marching Mizzou. No instruments or equipment are needed at this meeting, however, those students using university-owned instruments or equipment may pick up their instruments at this meeting. To reserve an instrument please indicate what you need on page 17 of this newsletter. For the first time in the history of Marching Mizzou, every member of Marching Mizzou will be provided with a university owned instrument. Alto saxophones are being purchased over the summer and should arrive by the start of Band Camp. In the event that these instruments do not arrive in time for Band Camp, alto saxophones should make sure that they have an instrument available for use until the new instruments arrive. Note that you are, however, required to provide your own properly fitting music lyre for your instrument. Additionally, Marching Mizzou does NOT sell reeds, valve oil, or grease so please come prepared.

Part Assignment Auditions Part assignment auditions will take place on Monday, August 14. Audition music must be memorized and you have the option of playing 1st, 2nd, or 3rd part. Audition music will be selected from our Traditional Music and can be found online at the following link:

https://music.missouri.edu/ensemble/marching-mizzou-sheet-music Please come to camp ready to audition with your music memorized. Veteran members, you are welcome to audition on the part you played last year. If you have any questions regarding these auditions, please call the Band Office at (573) 882-3438 or contact your section leader. Good luck!

Living On Campus If you have signed a residence hall contract for the fall, you need to provide the requested information on the enclosed response form (page 18) so the Band Office can communicate to the Residence Hall Staff that you will be moving into your residence early because of your required attendance at Band Camp. Note that University Bands will pay the $18.25 charge per night for your room until the residence halls officially open for the fall. New members, Section Leaders, Drum Line, Color Guard, and Feature Twirlers may move into their residence hall on Sunday, August 13 at 9:00a.m. All other veteran members may move into their residence hall beginning Monday, August 14 at 9:00a.m. As a reminder, if we do not hear from you we CANNOT reserve your residence hall room and YOU will incur the total cost of your room

during Band Camp. Your response form must be postmarked NO LATER than Friday, July 14.

Insurance Information Per the University of Missouri and School of Music policy, all Marching Mizzou members must provide proof of insurance otherwise you will not be allowed to participate in any Marching Mizzou activity. Please provide the requested information on page 18 as we will keep it on file in the Band Office in the event you require medical attention. If you do not have health insurance student insurance is available through the Student Health Center. Log on to studenthealth.missouri.edu or call 573-882-7481 for more information.

Course Registration & Fall Semester Rehearsal Schedule Members of Marching Mizzou have the option of enrolling in the course for credit or for zero-credit. Regardless of the option that is chosen, all members of Marching Mizzou must be enrolled in either MUSIC 1841, Sec 12, Class #55903 (for credit) or MUSIC 1841, Sec 14, Class #57071 (for zero-credit). A consent number is required for enrollment and may be obtained from the Band Office. You may obtain a consent number in person, over the phone (573-882-3438), or by emailing [email protected]. Consent numbers are available all summer and during band camp. For all first, second, and third year members of Marching Mizzou - If you choose to enroll for credit, you will receive a $250 scholarship that is intended to help offset the cost of the one-hour course credit. If you are enrolled in two music ensembles in a semester, you will receive a total scholarship of $500. If you are enrolled in three music ensembles in a semester, you will receive a total scholarship of $650. It is important to note that if you decide to enroll for zero-credit, then you will NOT receive a scholarship. It is strongly encouraged that new out-of-state members consider the zero-credit option, as the out-of-state credit hour cost is considerably higher than $250. For senior members of Marching Mizzou – You are not subject to this system and you should enroll for credit as normal and receive the same scholarship that you have in the past. Lastly, music education majors note that in order to fulfill your degree requirement you must be enrolled for credit at least once during your time in Marching Mizzou. Students not enrolled in Marching Mizzou will not be allowed to participate in any Marching Mizzou related activity. We understand this option may cause some confusion, so please contact the Band Office if you need advice on which option is best for you. Fall semester rehearsals take place every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 4:15 – 6:00p.m. (Drumline 3:45 – 6:00p.m.). Additionally, every section of the band may have 1-2 required sectionals each week from 3:30 – 4:00p.m., as determined by the section leaders. Each section will determine its own sectional day(s). Finally, we will be posting all halftime music on Canvas this year, so you must enroll PRIOR to the start of band camp.

Marching Mizzou Fees, Flip Folders, & Uniform Band Shoes Marching Mizzou covers the cost of your flip folder, music, drill charts, game day meals, and our annual end of season Band Banquet. All members, however, must purchase their own marching shoes ($25.00) and any replacement clothing items that may be needed such as your t-shirt, polo shirt, and ball cap (page 17). Marching Mizzou uses flip folders in rehearsal and in the stands at games. All wind and percussion players will be issued a flip folder with a minimum of 15 sleeves at the beginning of Band Camp. It is expected that each player maintains an organized folder all season to help keep the music in good shape, and make playing music in our rehearsals and in the stands more efficient. In order to match the clean and sharp appearance of our uniforms and for uniformity across the ensemble, all wind and Drumline members of Marching Mizzou must wear a “Dinkle” formal band shoe (patent leather style shoe with a highly polished finish). The $25.00 price has been made available exclusively to Marching Mizzou through Stanbury Uniforms (the manufacturer of our uniforms). Sizing for these shoes will take place alongside uniform checkout during Band Camp. Note that all wind and Drumline members must wear long black athletic socks (absolutely NO ankle socks) with their band shoes.

Marching Mizzou Shirts and Ball Caps All NEW Marching Mizzou members will receive a dry-fit Marching Mizzou polo, official M2 t-shirt, and M2 ball cap at NO CHARGE. These items are yours to keep for the duration of your time in Marching Mizzou. Note that Veteran members of Marching Mizzou will NOT receive a new dry-fit M2 polo, official M2 t-shirt, or a M2 ball cap. HOWEVER, you may purchase any new items if any of yours need to be replaced. Please indicate your shirt sizes on page 17 of this newsletter. Polo shirts are available in both male and female cuts. Ball caps will be used in the stands during games and used as official uniform hats in case of inclement weather, therefore, all ball caps must be treated as part of your uniform and with you during all performances. It is expected that all members (except Color Guard and Feature Twirlers) will wear their Marching Mizzou official t-shirt under their uniform at every performance in order to present a uniform appearance when uniform coats are removed. Our “Casual Uniform” for Marching Mizzou consists of the dry-fit Marching Mizzou polo, M2 ball cap, and a pair of LONG khaki colored shorts or a pair of khaki colored pants (shorts or pants will be determined by the Directors, but note you must purchase BOTH on your own). As previously discussed this is to create a sharp, uniform look across the ensemble during performances, travel, etc. Our first performance in this uniform will be on Sunday, August 20 at our annual “Concert on the Quad.”

Uniform Fitting and Check Out Uniform fitting and checkout will take place during Band Camp and a specific schedule for this process will be discussed at the beginning of Band Camp. In addition to your assigned uniform all woodwind and brass players must wear black gloves (woodwinds may cut out the fingertips as needed). Note that you will not be issued your uniform until all fees have been paid.

Approved Rush Schedule The following schedule is the approved rush schedule for all women of Marching Mizzou who are participants of sorority rush or are returning members of a sorority. This represents what we believe to be a generous compromise that should allow women to participate in both activities. Marching Mizzou is an academic class that requires certain consideration over non-academic activities. However, we feel involvement in Greek Life is important and adds to the overall college experience. It must be understood from the outset that anyone following this schedule may be placed on the reserve list until such time when a spot becomes available or the person earns back their spot in the pregame block. This decision has been made, not to penalize anyone for being an active and contributing member of campus life, but rather to ensure the integrity of the discipline required for Marching Mizzou to reach the highest standards of performance.
