As we move forward toward our Centennial Celebration we are looking to increase membership numbers to 500. To accomplish this we are seeking at least 100 new members. We ask you to encourage friends, family, and business associates to visit the NCQ and experience “the best kept secret on the South Shore.” We need everyone’s help. Our best source for expanding our numbers depends on reaching out to current members. The Membership Committees are asking for club wide support to assist us as we strive to increase our numbers for our survival. We need members to introduce people to the Neighborhood Club by inviting potential members in. We will be hosting an Open House in September for the purpose of showing off our Club and reaching out to prospective members. Analysis of the Members Survey results indicates that most members enjoy the many benefits of belonging to the Neighborhood Club. All seem to enjoy classic dining, special theme nights, and gala holiday centered events and view the club as a unique place for family gatherings. Making friends was highly rated by survey responders and bowling is considered an avenue to creating new friendships. The staff received high praise for their efforts in making members feel at home and comfortable. The need for more club-casual options and single-friendly events seems to be a priority. We commend Marty and the Staff for creating weekly opportunities and reasons to visit the Club, but the staff cannot be responsible for bringing in new members. Your Club needs your help. Please assist us in making the club stronger, and keeping it vibrant and thriving as we go forward. Members can do this by making friends aware and spreading the word of what a wonderful experience being a member of the Neighborhood Club of Quincy can be. The Neighborhood Club is such a special group of people and an ideal environment; why not share this experience with others and take advantage of the new membership referral program. Members sponsoring a new Class A Membership will receive a waiver of two months’ dues; Members sponsoring a new Class B membership will receive a waiver of one month’s dues. WE NEED YOU!

Board of Governors General Information Message from The General Manager

To all of our Members,

The Club is ending its fiscal year as of April 30th and it has been a banner year for the Club. Our events have increased considerably compared to last year and because of that we have had the opportunity to better the facility. We have also been hosting different events in the members lounge and dining room. Entertainment changes every Friday night and it has been well received. We also have tastings at the members bar on Thursday nights from 5:00pm - 7:00pm. This also changes from week to week. Please join us on your way home from work or stop in and relax and have a cocktail.

On Friday May 16th the Brand Ambassador for the Balvenie Scotch Portfolio will be hosting a single malt scotch tasting in the living room from 6:00pm until 8:00pm. They will showcase the 12, 14, and 17 year line, so if you are a scotch lover this will be a treat. Guests are welcome. If you plan on staying for dinner please remember to make a reservation so that we may staff accordingly.

We will be hosting a Mother’s Day Brunch Buffet on May 11th. If you plan on attending please phone the office with your reservation.

Best, Marty

Committee Reports

ENTERTAINMENT COMMITTEESpring is finally here and plans are underway for some great events.

Mother’s Day Brunch: May 11 is always a great day here at the Club. Reservations will fill up fast!

Fran Foy is hosting Ladies Night on May 22. The Ladies of NCQ will be treated to a delicious dinner followed by entertainment of Carol O’Shaughnessy, the First Lady of Cabaret!

All That Jazz! On Friday June 13, the Presidents Room will be transformed into a Blues Club for the night. Enjoy a night of good music with great friends. More information will be in the newsletter!

BOWLING COMMITTEEIf the Club’s bowling alleys have been looking

sparkly recently, your eyes are not playing tricks on you. Improvements to the bowling alleys have been underway during the past month. Equipment both in the back and in the front of the alleys has been cleaned. A new motor has been installed on Alley 4 which had been breaking down on a regular basis. As a result the pin carriage moves up and down more easily and bowlers are able to enjoy an evening of bowling without mechanical interruptions. All the balls and pins are clean having been hand polished by staff member Phil. We are grateful to Phil for making the balls and pins look brand new. The sideboards have been lowered to prevent the pins from jamming. New side pads have been ordered for each lane; this should create bigger pin falls and perhaps improve bowling scores. The bowlers have been very pleased with all the positive steps that have been taken to enhance the bowling experience. Marty contracted a maintenance plan to keep the bowling equipment clean and running smoothly. The committee thanks Marty for all his effort and hard work.

The Annual Mixed League Bowling Banquet will take place on Thursday, June 5. Since this event is open to all Club members it is being advertised as a

Celebrate American - Red, White, and Blue themed evening. A special menu with several entre choices will be offered. Bowling prizes will be awarded during the evening. Come dressed in red, white, and blue for the event.

Meanwhile bowlers also are cleaning up on the alleys. Eleanor McDonough was the High Woman Bowler for most of the month, followed closely by Claire McNally. Diane Caledonia didn’t show any rust after her Florida vacation. On her return to the lanes she scored an 85. Bob Martell bowled a strike within a strike for a total match of 110 on April 9, but is still surpassed by Bob Foy’s 113. Team 5 is having a great season led by Deanna Seymourian and Art McNulty. We are all glad to see Darlene Babb back on the alleys.

BOOK CLUB IIWe welcomed back our vacationing members for our April meeting. Most enjoyed our book, Roots of the Olive Tree by Courtney Miller Santo. It was the story of five generations of firstborn women living together in the same house on a secluded olive grove in the Sacramento Valley of Northern California. Our next read is for May 20 meeting. The Orchardist by Amanda Coplin. At the turn of the twentieth century, in a rural stretch of the Pacific Northwest, a reclusive orchardist, William Talmadge, tends to apples and apricots as if they were loved ones. A gentle man, he’s found solace in the sweetness of the fruit he grows and the quiet, beating heart of the land he cultivates. One day, two teenage girls appear and steal his fruit from the market; they later return to the outskirts of his orchard to see the man who gave them no chase. Feral, scared, and very pregnant, the girls take up on Talmadge’s land and indulge in his deep reservoir of compassion. Just as the girls begin to trust him, men arrive in the orchard with guns, and

the shattering tragedy that follows will set Talmadge on an irrevocable course not only to save and protect but also to reconcile the ghosts of his own troubled past. Another suggestion for May is Handling Sin by Michael Malone. On the Ides of March, our hero, Raleigh Whittier Hayes (forgetful husband, baffled father, prosperous insurance agent, and leading citizen of Thermopylae, North Carolina), learns that his father has discharged himself from the hospital, taken all his money out of the bank and, with a young black female mental patient, vanished in a yellow Cadillac convertible. Left behind is a mysterious list of seven outrageous tasks that Raleigh must perform in order to rescue his father and his inheritance. All are welcome. Call ahead for luncheon reservations.

Member’s Spotlight

Member’s SpotlightGail Bell

Seeing Gail Bell around the Cub, you my think what a great bowler, but we who know her recognize her as a top- producing 25-year veteran in the real estate industry on the South Shore. As Vice President of Home Center Sotheby’s International Realty, she has been a well known and highly respected broker on the South shore.

Growing up in the South Shore, she graduated from Cohasset High as a Class officer, former cheerleader and captain of the softball team. She went on to graduate from Elmira College and the University of Scotland, studying philosophy, political science and journalism. She is engaged to member Stephen Bartlett and mother of CJ Bell. Before finding her way in to real estate, she was a VP of an ecological firm and PR consultant to the EPA in Boston, Gail’s success in the industry is well known. having establishing real estate offices

in Hingham and Cohasset. After selling these two Sotheby offices, she became the top agent for the International Realty firm and the third top agent for the area. She is Past President of the Plymouth and South Shore Board of Realtors, a former Realtor of the Year and host of the award-winning and 20-year running cable show “The Home Center with Gail Bell” . She was once chosen as Tom Brokow’s featured realtor on national television, and was named one of the Top

Ten Women in Real Estate in the Greater Boston Area by The Boston Herald.

In her “spare time”, she plays golf on a woman’s league on the South Shore, and is a member of the South Shore Chamber of Commerce. She is celebrating her 25th year as a member of the Neighborhood Club, presently serving on the Board of Governors. She also enjoys yoga, Boston theater going, poker and scrabble but her highest achievement could very well be the top-scoring Woman’s bowler of the Neighborhood Club mixed bowling league--- if she continues with her winning ways.
