Dear Sunrisers,

Well, it’s 43 days and counting till this term of mine is up. But the work of the club goes on. My goodness, when I see what we all accomplished at Camp Whittier, I am amazed. I remember a story once about engineers on a space shuttle work sight. A visitor asked one workman what he was doing. Expecting him to say, “I am placing a screw in this panel, she was surprised by his answer: I’m building a space shuttle.” You see it is a matter of perspective. We all had individual tasks to put something together, whether it was shaping the wire to hold the plants, preparing the hillside for the landscaping with hoes or rakes, using the nail gun to nail the planks, barbecuing the tri-tip, or painting the wood for the deck, it was teamwork that accomplished the tasks at hand. We were creating something bigger than ourselves. Thanks again to the coordinators, Tom Heath, Cheryl Jensen and all the team captains for the various areas and each of you who made the day so successful. The pictures of the finished product are testimony to what we can do together. Yay Team!

As you know we are dark May 19th because we have Zoo day May 21s, 4-8, to celebrate! (That’s even poetic). Bring your family and friends. If you don’t have their names on the list, be sure to let us know. See you there.

AND on May 24th we have the 25th annual Sunrise Rotary Golf Classic and Auction at Rancho San Marcos. Tee off at 12:15 PM, 5:30 PM is auction and dinner. A GREAT DAY AT CAMP WHITTIER! For the past 13 years, Sunrise Rotarians have rolled up their sleeves and picked up chain saws, wood chippers, and paint brushes to improve Camp Whittier, a 55-acre resident camp operated by the United Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Santa Barbara and located in the Santa Ynez Valley near Lake Cachuma. The club has participated in hands-on projects such as pool area improvements, new fencing, painting, electrical wiring, tree trimming, landscaping, road maintenance and more! This year, 40 Sunrise Rotarians, their friends and family members gathered on Saturday, May 8th to construct a performance deck off of one of the buildings, which will double as the entry steps and landing for the building and install hillside landscaping with trees, shrubs, steps, and irrigation. The day was filled with sawing, hammering, cementing, painting, digging, gluing, planting, trenching, measuring, leveling, sweating, building and beautifying, and of course lots of laughing, smiling, talking, eating, and just plain enjoying. (See Noozhawk article) http://www.noozhawk.com/nonprofits/article/051410_sunrise_rotarians_get_to_work_at_camp_whittier We wish to acknowledge the special efforts of the following individuals and businesses for their extraordinary support for this project.

Program: Sandy Grasso-Boyd introduced Linda Putnam who spoke on “Organizational Culture” She reminded us that organizational culture (collectives, communities, organizations) is not static, but subject to change. She illustrated  how  organiza1onal  members  develop  and  embrace  unique  values,  symbols,  narra1ves  and  rituals  to  inculcate  key  values  and  mo1vate  members.    These  ideas  were  illustrated  through  exemplars  from  Disneyland,  MicrosoA,  and  the  Los  Angeles  Olympic  organizing  commiEee.    She presented the following list of questions for Sunrise Rotarians to ponder to help define our culture. Since, we didn’t have time for you to respond to these questions at the meeting, perhaps some of you might care to share your thoughts by emailing to Sandy for possible inclusion in a future Bugle
