Type A mill shoe is supplied as standard equipment with the cutting teeth dressed with hard metal and has side wings. The type A mill shoe is used where the formation is relatively soft and the fish is a loose piece. Type B mill shoe is equal in design to the type A shoe, howev- er, it is hard faced with Gotcoloy a sintered tungsten carbide in an extremely tough matrix which will effectively and rapidly mill up junk during the fishing opera- tion. This shoe will cut on O.D., I.D. and bottom. This design is used to mill up junk and is extremely effective for cutting cores. Type B or type C Gotcoloy dressed milling shoes are used if the formation is hard or if the fish is embedded in the formation. Use of these two designs also cuts away protruding excess metal to allow free entry of the junk into the basket. Finger Shoe - For retrieving loose junk on the bottom of the hole which may exceed the maxi- mum catch of the RCB can be retrieved by use of a finger shoe assembly. The assembly consists of a shoe extension and the finger replacement. The entire assembly is used in place of a mill shoe. The fingers are designed to close in beneath the fish when slowly lowered during rotation. Finger replacements can be replaced eas- ily and are very inexpensive. Magnet Inserts - The RCB can be easily converted to a fish- ing magnet by removing the catcher assembly and replacing it with a magnet insert. The insert still allows direct or reverse circu- lation and can be used with A, B or C type shoes, or special shoes designed to customer specifica- tions. The magnet insert is the same design as the Gotco Fishing Magnet and by adding a top sub to the magnet insert, it can be used independently as a fishing magnet. The tool consists of a topsub, jet barrel, lower barrel, jetassembly section, jets, ballseat, drop ball, shoe, andcatcher assembly. A lift sub isavailable to assist in handlingand for storage of the steeldrop ball.

    Assembly and Operation

Make up the junk basket tothe bottom of the string andrun into the hole. (see figure1) When the tool is approxi-mately 4 to 6 feet off the bot-tom of the hole, circulation isinitiated to wash the hole inorder to retrieve junk. Duringthis operation, the ball seat issecured in place within theupper portion of the jet pumphead with shear pins. Thisseals off the reverse circula-tion jet ports providing full cir-culation through the entirelength of the tool. The barrel, jet assembly, and junk catcherswill be washed clean goinginto the hole while preparingfor junk retrieval.

When the tool is over thefish (junk), the steel drop ballis then dropped through theinside diameter and seatsinside the ball seat. (see figure2) When pump pressure isapplied, the pins will shear

allowing the ball seat to dropdown into the lower section ofthe jet pump head. The flowwill now be directed out of thejet nozzles at an angle as to notwashout the hole. Flow willthen be directed downwardand back up through the junkbasket catcher, lower barrel, jet housing, around the jetnozzles, and back out of the jetbarrel ports. Thus, creatingreverse circulation and direct-ing junk into the catcherassembly.

The Jet Type Junk Basketcan easily be converted to astandard Core Basket by sim-ply removing the Jet Barreland Jet Assembly and screw-ing the Lower Barrel directlyto the Top Sub.

    Assembly and Operation

Make up the core basket tothe bottom of the string and run itin the hole to a point several feetfrom the bottom. With direct cir-culation, the coring action on thejunk proceeds until a 24 inch coreis cut. The fingers in the uppercatcher break the core when anupward strain is applied to thestring. The lower catcher fingers

then form a close-fitting basketthat traps the core with itsretrieved junk. As in the otherjunk basket designs, they are freeto revolve within the shoe, thuseliminating finger breakage.

    ConstructionThe fishing magnet is con-

structed from steel speciallyselected for its ability to conductthe necessary magneto-motiveforces. The magnet element isone of the most powerful perma-nent magnets available. Usedproperly, it will never lose its

charge. A variety of shoes areavailable to accommodate anyretrieval situation. Caution:Magnets are charged while in theassembled state and should notbe disassembled. Disassembly isdangerous and can cause seriousinjury due to the extreme forcesgenerated by the magnet element.

    Assembly and Operation

No assembly is required otherthan selecting the desired shoeand installing it on the lower endof the magnet assembly. Make upthe magnet assembly to the bot-tom of the fishing string. Run inthe hole, and hold the magnet 6 to12 inches above the fish.Circulate generously to washaway cuttings. Reduce circula-tion, lower the magnet to the fish, and rotate slightly to obtain goodcontact. Cut off circulation andlift the magnet from the hole.

    Optional Componentsand Accessories

Guides A flush guide isassembled as standard equipment.Lipped guides and mill guides arealso available. The lipped guideassists the operator in centralizingthe fish to assure contact with themagnet. The mill guide enablesthe operator to mill any soft for-mation or settling, thus freeingthe debris at the bottom of thehole.

Wire Line Adapter Anadapter is available to installbetween the magnet and the cablehead or socket.

Magnet Charger TheGotco Magnet Charger providesthe highest strength possible forrecharging your fishing magnets. While magnets should not losetheir effectiveness during normalhandling and operation, condi-tions exist which can reduce theircharge. Welding a magnet sub-jects the magnet circuit to electri-cal current which can adverselyaffect the charge. Similarly, stor-ing the magnet in the vicinity ofelectric motors, or bringing mag-nets too close to each other can bedetrimental to the magnetsstrength. Recharging is quick andsimple. There is no limit to the

Fishing MagnetThe Gotco Fishing Magnet is a junk retrieval tool designed toeffectively remove metal particles, shavings, and debris from thebottom of the well bore. The process of retrieving small, oddlyshaped objects is one of the most frequent and most difficultfishing jobs. Typically, these objects are the result of bit failuresthat leave cones and cutters in the hole, or are an accumulation ofmill cuttings, or are simply accidental droppings of unmillableobjects into the hole. In these cases, the fish is nearly always anodd-shaped object that cannot be engaged in the normal manner.Fishing magnets successfully remove these small objects fromthe hole bottom. The tools design incorporates generous circula-tion holes that wash away the cuttings and other debris that other-wise would prevent contact with the magnet. Fishing magnetscan be run on either wire line or pipe.

How to Order Gotco Fishing MagnetsWhen ordering, please specify:

Name and part number of assembly. Connection, if nonstandard.

number of times a magnet can berecharged, and with proper han-dling a recharged magnet willretain maximum strength indefi-nitely.

Keepers Keeper bars arerecommended when magnets arestored. They are placed on theface of the magnet and will con-sume most of the flux generatedby the magnet element. This willreduce the potential for the attrac-tion of miscellaneous metal itemsor particles. Keepers can be safelyand easily removed at any time.

Air Shipments If shippingby air, consult your freight for-warder. Special handling isrequired by most airlines whenshipping magnetized items.
