Annual variations in weather explain why the wine consumer

might see higher wine prices one year or more choices of great winesin another. Every growing season has a different number of days of sun, rain, fog, mist, hail, frost and wind. What’s more, the timing of any of these individual events between March and October couldmean the difference between a perfect year for wine growing or ahorrible crop of grapes. This is why a vintage – the year in whichgrapes were harvested – is stated on most wine labels.

Poor growing-season weather, such as severe frost or hail, candestroy or spoil crops, bringing increased prices or fewer high-qualitywines, or both, from that vintage. However, it is possible to find greatwines from not-so-great vintages, and vice versa. It’s also possible, though rare, that a single year can produce both high volume and

high quality, such as the 2012 vintage in much of California. Devoid

of damaging heat spikes or frost, it was a year with a near-perfect

combination of temperature, rain, and sunshine. With the help of vintage charts, the growing seasons of major

regions around the world can be compared. If you buy wine atspecialty shops, vintage charts are normally available for referenceCalifornia’s consistently good weather makes year-to-year vintagevariations less significant than appellations in, say, New York Statewhere excessive rains one summer could ruin a vintage; or Francewhere irrigating vineyards during dry periods is not permitted.(That’s life in a controlled appellation of origin.) Successful wines isome parts of the wine-making world depend heavily on favorableweather, so the vintage year on a label carries more meaning.

A good vintage has warm days, cool nights, and a long mild

summer. A consistently cool summer ripens grapes too slowly, creating an imbalance of high acidity with low sugar, increasingtartness in that year’s wines. At the other extreme, if weatherconditions bring an avalanche of extremely hot days, sugar levelsskyrocket and acidity virtually disappears, producing flat and heavwines. Rain during, or nearing harvest can also upset the balance. some delicate, thin-skinned varieties like pinot noir, excess moistudilutes juice inside grapes and thins out wine. It may even form roon grape clusters, reducing the amount of quality wine producedfrom the affected crop.

It’s a question that can drive even longtime wine and wine-trade

insiders crazy: what really is the difference between the terms

sustainable, organic and biodynamic? And, do the distinctions matter

at all? What’s really being asked, in my opinion, is how much is

marketing magic and how much is winegrowing truth; how much is

it everyone drinking from the same grapeaid versus a reflection of the

realities of commercial wine production? It’s a mixture of all of the

above, of course! And given that there any plenty of organic or

biodynamic producers who don’t reveal this as part of their

marketing because it’s easier not to, letting the focus be on the wines

themselves, it’s a very complicated situation. But what in wine isn’t?

Everyone, perhaps, by now understands what organic means interms of not using chemicals or ecologically disruptive practices, but

in the context of wine, it gets a lot trickier – especially for small

wineries, which is why there are way more wines labeled “made with

organic grapes” than straight up “organic wines.” It is considerably

easier to get certification showing that the “organic-ness” of the grapes,

is preserved through the winemaking, than to get a winery or wine

certified as wholly organic. It is not impossible, but it is costly, takes

multiple years, and leaves little room for error in the cellar. Among a

number of technical issues, there is an absolute limit on sulfite usage,

which knocks out most commercial wines because of the larger batch

process in which they are produced, and the necessity to havepreservation of the wines, once bottled. Because of all of the

regulations and paperwork, some people practice these ideas without

preaching them, intentionally not denoting what they’ve done.

Biodynamic focuses on the land and resulting wines one better.

Based on the writings of Rudolf Steiner, proponents of what is an

agricultural philosophy argue for integrative methods akin to organic

practices but also place those strategies within a system of nature-

based energy throughwhich the goal is to “recharge” the land

ecologically and spiritually; there is a certification agency, Demeter

whose imprenteur producers must receive in order for the labels to

legally proclaim the wines as biodynamic. Again, while a number o

very high-end producers in the United States and internationally

grow according to these principles, it is expensive and time-

consuming, which is why it remains a smaller niche in the larger

wine world. Are biodynamic wines better? Taste is in the tongue o

    the imbiber.

So, then, where does sustainable fit into this discussion? To my

mind, it’s the least rigorous, but the most honest in terms of the kin

of compromises winegrowers often have to make. While there is a

of proscribed “Lodi Rules,” and there are other sustainablecertifications, too, for things like being fish-friendly or Napa Green

much is self-assessed and self-reported agricultural practices. Mor

importantly, the sustainable growers I know will say they are

essentially farming organically or biodynamically all the time, but

they withhold their vineyards from both the costs of certification a

from the potential losses of being hard hit by, for example, a pest t

are unable to eradicate, except through commercially-necessary, no

organic practices. It is far easier to discuss these options when it is

not the potential loss of your crop or vines; sustainable winegrowi

forthrightly says commerce and stewardship can go hand in hand

through integrative processes like composting and “natural”fermentations, rather than the alternatives – unnecessary chemical

use or working against the land in the production process. I think

most farmers would see the natural rightness in this: if you don’t s

you don’t get to grow again.

As you can see, the potential for these terms to be meaningful

rests with consumer understanding and willingness to ask questio

Since sustainable, in particular, is a much more wide-open term, it

behooves the interested wine lover to ask questions about how the

grapes are grown and what terms are or are not used on the

producers’ labels. You’ll often find that the absences have little to d

with actual winegrowing processes at all, and more often than not

result from decisions necessary to keep the winery in business. If nothing else, your next conversation with a winemaker should be

much more engaging since these are the issues he or she is really

thinking about behind that smile. Enjoy!

With Lucas & Lewellen wines, it’s all about choice, diversity and keeping it

local. Between Lucas & Lewellen Vineyards tasting room, and its sister tasting

room, Toccata, guests can choose from a total of 42 different wines crafted from

23 grape varieties, including one of the few Méthode Champenoise style

sparkling wines made on the Central Coast. All grapes are grown on their 400

estate acres in Santa Barbara, incorporating three distinct microclimates, all of

which add up to an amazing mix of wine. How does a winery make so many

wines and make them well? Having a third-generation grape grower who has

farmed the region since the 1970s helps. “We hear time and again that what

makes us unique is the consistent quality we bring across a wide range of

varieties,” says Mike Lewellen, director of business operations. “This allows ouguests to really explore the best of Santa Barbara.”

Lucas & Lewellen grapes are hand picked and sustainably grown in their

Santa Ynez Valley estate vineyards, and even their Winemaker, Megan McGrath

Gates was educated locally and grew up in the Santa Ynez Valley. But how did

two friends end up becoming one of the most iconic wineries in Santa Barbara

“That’s a question I’m often asked,” laughs former Superior Court Judge, Royc

Lewellen who performed the wedding ceremony for Louis Lucas—before the

winery even existed! “Louis told me over lunch he was considering selling one

the other of his two vineyards, and I told him I wasn’t interested in buying a

vineyard but I’d buy a half interest in the two vineyards if he would do the

farming.” By the end of that lunch, Lucas & Lewellen Vineyards was

born. Megan McGrath Gates, a Cal Poly San Luis Obispo soils

sciences graduate who earned her Certificate in Winemaking from

UC Davis, came on board as Winemaker in 2006—one of the few

female winemakers along the Central Coast. “I am extremely

fortunate to be a part of the Lucas & Lewellen team. It defines the

best of Santa Barbara County wine grape growing and winemaking.

The qualities that our wines are frequently recognized for begin in

the vineyard with Louis Lucas,” she says.

They farm several different vineyards including Goodchild, High 9

and the Old Adobe Vineyards in the Santa Maria Valley, located alongthe Foxen Wine Trail. Home to mainly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir,

the soils vary from clay and gravel river deposits to hillside and

hilltop sites reminiscent of the great vineyards of Burgundy.

There is also the Los Alamos Valley vineyard, which stretches for

over a mile along Highway 101. These vineyards are home to over

20 varieties of grapes including traditional Rhône, Burgundy and

Bordeaux grapes, as well as Italian varieties for their sister label,

Tocatta. And then there is the idyllic Valley View Vineyard that slopes

towards the Santa Ynez River, planted to what many consider Santa

    Barbara County's best Cabernet Sauvignon.

In the Lucas & Lewellen tasting room, both kids and dogs arewelcomed and the ambience is warm and friendly. They offer a “Fun

List” where guests can enjoy only “fun wines” from sparkling wine to

Rosé, and decadent late harvest wines to the award-winning Silver

King Port in an edible dark chocolate “shot glass.”

Visit the Lucas & Lewellen Vineyards tasting room, located at

1645 Copenhagen Drive in Solvang, and their sister tasting room,

Toccata, at 1665 Copenhagen Drive—just a few doors down. Both

    BY RACHEL HOMMEL

    Casa Cassara Winery & Vineyards,

located in the heart of the Sta. Rita Hills

appellation, is a true family affair. With the

fist vines planted in 1990, the hilltop 35-acre

estate specializes in Pinot Noir, inspired by

Cassara’s family roots. Sitting on the eastern

edge of the Sta. Rita hills at 800-foot

elevation, the climate offers the perfect

backdrop for award winning Pinot Noir.Kyle Knapp, Winemaker and taste

aficionado, is a purest at heart. Hired by Dan

Cassara, he has been the lead winemaker

since 2013, making innovative wines with a

    minimalist approach to growing. Maximizing

on flavor, Knapp was born with an excellent

palate, dedicated to tried and true

winemaking methods. With a passion for

    creating award-winning wines, Knapp also

owns his own label, Press Gang Cellars,

which focuses on Rhône varietals, inaddition to being the Assistant Winemaker at

    Beckman Vineyards.

Learning from the ground up, Knapp

knew from early on that he wanted to create

    something different, something against the

grain. At Casa Cassara, every grape is

    handpicked, hand sorted, and fermented

using native, wild yeast. Dedicated to hands

    on winemaking, Knapp creates stunning

wine without interfering with the fruit’s

natural life cycle. With warm sunny days and

cool fog, the hillside vineyard offers an ideal

    microclimate.

    Knapp’s top recommendations include the

2011 Estate Pinot Noir, 100% Sta. Rita Hills

grown and processed on site. The wine

opens with bright, fresh fruit flavors and

finishes with a light hint of toasted oak, a

    true representation of Casa Cassara.

    Additionally, Knapp’s 2014 Chardonnay from

Verna's Vineyard is perfect for summer, soft

and well rounded. Bright, aromatic and very

clean, it is a pure expression of Chardonnay.

The wine has great acidity, with just the right

    mouthfeel and texture.

Like the family crest adorning the winery’s

labels, Casa Cassara is proud of their roots,

as exemplified in their 2010 Sam’s Dago Red.

The wine was blended in honor of Cassara’s

Grandfather, Angelo “Sam” Cassara, a U.S.

immigrant from Sicily and the family’s

    original winemaker. Like many immigrants,

he made his own wine—a blend of red and

white grapes similar to Chianti. Continuing

the tradition, the wine is a unique blend of

15% white grape variety to 85% red grape

    variety—the correct ratio to Chianti.

    Casa Cassara’s wine represents a

dedication to their craft and heritage. At their

tasting room in Solvang, guests are

encouraged to take a seat, say hello and

    became part of their family.

Casa Cassara Winery & Vineyard is

located at 1607 Mission Drive in Solvang.

They are open Sunday through Thursday

from 12:00 to 6:00 p.m., and Friday and

Nestled under California pepper trees and overlooking the Alam

Pintado Vineyard between Solvang and Los Olivos, Lincourt Wine

retains the rural charm and simplicity of an earlier era; it’s one of th

reasons people flock to this region. This was once a dairy property

and the old farmhouse - an original 1926 Sears Craftsman kit hom

which sold for around $400 at the time - serves as one of the most

unique and historic tasting rooms in all of Santa Barbara. The

Lincourt picnic grounds, lawns and gardens are the perfect spot to

spend a leisurely day with family and friends and a bottle of wine.

Lincourt was founded by Bill Foley in 1996 and he has four est

vineyards located within the Sta. Rita Hills and Santa Ynez Valley

regions of Santa Barbara. Lincourt began when Bill Foley fell in lov

with the rugged coastline, picturesque towns, oak studded hills an

the casual graciousness of Santa Barbara wine country. Named for

two daughters, Lindsay and Courtney, the Lincourt wines express

complexity and diversity of their estate vineyards. But when Foley

first planted grapes in the Sta. Rita Hills region, it was largelyundiscovered. Today of course it is one of California’s most coveted

cool-climate, viticultural regions and the Lincourt wines are

produced entirely from their two estate vineyards within that AVA

They are rolling hillside sites that offer diurnal temperature swings

and long growing seasons making the wines rich, structured, fruit

    forward and regionally exact.

The Lincourt tasting room has just had makeover but the classi

yellow exterior and white trim remains the same. Inside, the tastin

room has refinished wood floors, a new tasting bar, and lighting

fixtures, all still reminiscent of its 1920s origins, and they still have

Courtney’s Vineyard is one of Santa Barbara’s most historic

properties, originally part of the Spanish Land Grant. It’s a beautiful

south-facing hillside which climbs from 500 to 1,000 feet above sea

level and features 59 individual micro-blocks delineated by soil type,

elevation, grade and exposure to the maritime winds off the Pacific

Ocean. That means you need to try this Chardonnay! There’s also

their Steel Chardonnay—named for the fact that there was no barrel

time, but instead fermented in stainless steel giving it more crisp

citrus flavors, and old favorites like their Rosé, Syrah and Cabernet

    Sauvignon.
