    7fyouarenewtoMIDI(MusicalInstrumentDigitalInterface),youmaynditchallengingtounderstandwhysoundshavenotsimply

    been included in the keyboard You will fnd that using a sotware-based sound source and recording system allows or accessto an extremely large array o high quality sounds, a large graphic user interace, and reedom to work with many music creation

    applications.AbasicunderstandingofMIDIwillenableyoutotakeadvantageofitswealthofcreativepossibilities.

    PressingoneofKeyStudioskeyscausesthekeyboardtosendoutMIDI(MusicalInstrumentDigitalInterface)data.MIDIdatajust

    gives instructions on how a sound should play These instructions dictate parameters such as what note to play, when to play it, h

    oud to play it, and which sound to use

    When using a virtual (sotware) instrument within your recording sotware, data rom the KeyStudio keyboard is sent to the

    sequencersoftware,routedtoavirtualinstrument,andsenttoanaudiooutput.ThisprocessturnsMIDIdataintoaudiblesounds.

    Forthis,youmustcongureyourmusicsoftwaretoreadMIDIdatabeingsentfromKeyStudio,andplaythesoundbackaccording

    nmanymusicapplications,muchofthisprocessisautomated.GarageBand,forexample,onlyrequiresyoutohighlightaSoftwar

    nstrumenttrackinordertobeabletohearwhatyouareplayingonyourKeyStudiokeyboard.Providedyourcomputerhasbuilt-inspeakers, or you have external speakers connected (and these speakers are not muted or turned down), you should hear sounds

    Key Names

    The letters printed above the white keys stand or the names o the musical notes the keys represent The number next to each

    etter marks the octave each key belongs to (More inormation on octaves can be ound in the ollowing section) Black keys are

    semitonestotheiradjacentwhitekeysanddonthaveadedicatedletter.Asemitonerepresentsthedistanceinpitchfromonen

    to its immediate neighbor

    Blackkeysusuallyhavethesamenameasthenexthigherorlowerwhitekey,buthaveanadditionalsharpsymbol(#semitonehigherthantheletterindicates),oratsymbol(bsemitonelowerthantheletterindicates)attachedtothem.Forexample,thena

    oftheblackkeytotherightofC3isC#3(C-sharp3),butitcanalsobecalledDb3(D-at3),sinceitisalsoadjacenttotheDkey

    onitsright.Inotherwords,blackkeyshavetwovalidnames,dependingonthecontextofthemusicalnotationtheyarepartof.

    Octave Buttons

    An octave contains 12 notes, and each octave is marked out clearly on your KeyStudio keyboard by black and white sections start

    on C Each octave is given a number

    KeyStudio is able to shit the pitch o its keys up or down by one or more octaves When the keyboards octaves are not shited

    (octave shit set to zero), the lights above both the Octave buttons will be lit The deault octave shit designa

    s zero and will be the octave setting each time you power up the keyboard

    fyoupresstheOctave>buttononce,thelightabovetheOctavebuttonagain,thekeyboardwillbeshifteduptwooctaves.Itispossibletoshiftthe

    keyboard up a total o our octaves using the Octave > button To shit the octave down, press the Octave button,theoctaveisshiftedup.IfthelightisonlylitabovetheOctave

    Pitch Bend Wheel

    As the name indicates, the Pitch Bend wheel is usually used to bend the notes played on the keyboard up or down This allows yo

    to play phrases not normally associated with keyboard playing, including guitar-style ris Your sound source determines how ar y

    can bend the note The usual setting is two semitones but can be up to two octaves up or down

    Modulation Wheel

    The Modulation wheel is typically used or modulation o the sound you are playing This real-time controller was originally introduc

    onelectronickeyboardinstrumentstogivetheperformeroptionssuchasaddingvibrato,justlikeplayersofacousticinstrumentsd

    KeyStudios Modulation wheel is assignable to control many possible parameters (See chapter Advanced KeyStudio Features in

    Edit Mode or more inormation on this)

    Volume Slider

    TheVolumeslidercansendMIDImessagesthatcontrolthevolumeofthenotesyouareplaying.TheVolumeslidercanalsobe

    assigned to control dierent parameters such as pan (balance), attack, reverb, and chorus (See chapter Advanced KeyStudio

    Features in Edit Mode or more inormation on this)

    Sustain Pedal Jack

    Youcanconnectamomentary-contactfootpedal(notincluded)totheSustainjackonthebackofyourM-Audiokeyboard.The

    keyboardwillautomaticallydetectthecorrectpolaritywhenpoweringup.Ifyouwanttoreversethepolarity,simplypressthepeda

    when you switch on your keyboard

    The oot pedal is normally used or sustaining the sound you are playing without having to keep your fngers pressing down the ke

    This is similar to an acoustic pianos sustain pedal unction

    Advanced Features in Edit Mod

    8The button to the let o the keys labeled Edit Mode is used to access additional advanced unctions o the keyboard When this

    button is pressed, the keyboard will enter Edit mode and the keys on the keyboard can be used to select unctions and enter data

    The light above the Edit Mode button indicates whether or not the keyboard is in Edit mode When in Edit mode, the black keys on

    the keyboard are used or selecting unctions, while the white keys are used or data entry and channel selection

    Your keyboard will exit Edit mode as soon as either a unction is selected or the CANCEL or ENTER key is pressed The light abov

    the Edit Mode button will then turn o and the keyboard can then be used to play notes again Some unctions do not require any

    additional data entry When these unctions are selected, the keyboard will automatically exit Edit mode and return to Perormanc

    mode

    Note: Not every music application can process all types o MIDI messages KeyStudio is capable o sending. Please consult you

    sotwares documentation or inormation on what messages it can accept.

    Octave buttons

    To select an alternate unction:

    1 Press the Edit Mode button

    2 Press the black key that represents the unction you want to assign to the Octave buttons KeyStudio will exit Edit

    mode as soon as you push one o these keys

    PLEASE NOTE: Some o the unctions that the Octave buttons can be used or cannot send out a value less than ze

    When used to control these unctions, both lights above the buttons will remain on, regardless o the current setting

    that unction.

    The available functions of the octave buttons are:

    Octave Shit

    TheOctavebuttonscontroloctaveshiftbydefault.However,ifthesekeyshavebeenprogrammedtocontrol

    another unction, you may wish to re-assign them to control octave shit once again

    To assign the Octave buttons to control octave shit:

    1 Press the Edit Mode button

    Advanced Functions in Edit Mode diagram This octave shit method can be useul when the Octave buttons have been

    reassignedtocontrolanotherMIDIfunction.

    1 Press the Edit Mode button

    2. PresstheblackkeybelowB2(Bb2).InEditmode,thiskeyfunctionsasOCTAVE+,shiftingthekeyboardupone

    octave.Itispossibletoshiftthekeyboardupatotaloffouroctaves.

    3. PresstheblackkeyaboveF2(F#2).InEditmode,thiskeyfunctionsasOCTAVE-,shiftingthekeyboarddownon

    octave.Itispossibletoshiftthekeyboarddownatotalofthreeoctaves.

    4. PresstheblackkeyaboveG2(G#2).InEditmode,thiskeyfunctionsasOCTAVE0toresettheoctaveshifttoz

    5 When you have chosen your octave shit, either press C5 representing ENTER, or press the Edit Mode button to

    Edit mode

    Transpose

    Insomecasesitisusefultoincreaseordecreasethetransmittedpitchbyasmallnumberofsemitonesratherthanawhole

    octave.Forexample,youmaybeplayingasongwithasingerandthesingerishavingtroublehittingthehighnotes.Inthis

    case, you can try reducing the pitch by one or more semitones This is achieved using a unction called TransposeTranspose works similar to octave shit, except the shit is not limited to multiples o 12 semi-tones As with octave shit, the

    are two ways o transposing the keyboard When in Edit mode, you can assign the Octave buttons to control th

    transpose eature Alternatively, you can use the black keys F#3, G#3, and Bb3 to shit the transposition These black keys

    representTRANSPOSE-,TRANSPOSE0andTRANSPOSE+respectively.

    To assign the Octave buttons to transpose:

    1 Press the Edit Mode button

    2. PresstheblackkeyaboveD1(D#1),representingDATA=TRANSPOSE.KeyStudiowillexitEditmodeasso

    asD#1hasbeenpressed.

    When the Octave buttons are assigned to transpose the keyboard, the lights above the buttons indicate the direction o the

    transposition To return the keyboards transpose shit to zero, press both the Octave buttons at the same time

    Channel

    MIDIdatafromthekeyboardcanbesentonanyof16MIDIchannels.KeyStudiosdefaultistotransmitMIDIdataonchanne

    However,certainMIDIperformanceorrecordingscenariosmayrequirethekeyboardtosenddataonadifferentchannel.Yo

    can change the channel on which data is sent using the ollowing method:

    1 Press the Edit Mode button

    2. Pressoneofthe16channelkeysfromD1toE3,whicheveronerepresentsthechannelyouneed.KeyStudiowillex

    Edit mode as soon as a channel key has been pressed

    For example, i a device specifes that you need to send data on channel 10, press the Edit Mode button, and then F2 to se

    channel 10 This channel is usually dedicated to drum sounds when working with GM compatible synthesizers and sound

    modules

    The channel can also be assigned to the Octave buttons by pressing the Edit Mode button and then C#2 Thi

    will allow the Octave buttons to increment or decrement through the channels When channel 16 is reached

    and>ispressed,channel1willbeselected.IftheOctavebuttonsareassignedtovarythechannel,thelight

    above the buttons will not change, since it is not possible to have a channel with a negative value Pressing both the buttons together will recall KeyStudios deault, channel 1

    Program Change

    Program changes are used to change the instrument or voice you are controlling with your KeyStudio Program change

    messagescanbebenecialwhenusingtheKeyStudiokeyboardtocontrolMIDIsoundmodulesorsynthesizers.Somemus

    sotware applications support these messages, however, others do not Check your sotwares User Guide to fnd out i it c

    process program change messages

    Inthisexample,wewilldemonstratehowtochangetheinstrumentonaGeneralMIDIsoundmoduletoacellosound.Todo

    thisweneedtosendaprogramchangeof42,whichwillselectacellosoundfromtheGeneralMIDIInstrumentsstandard(see Appendix A) There are two methods to send the program change:

    1) Increment/Decrement Program Change:

    1 Press the Edit Mode button

    2 Press the black key above F1 (F#1) Now the Octave buttons can be used to change the program

    2) Quick Select Program Change

    1 Press the Edit Mode button

    2 Press the black key above F4 (F#4), representing program

    3. PresskeysD4,thenB3,thenC5.Thisentersthecombination:4,2,ENTER.

    NowthekeyboardissettoplaytheGMcellosound42(fromtheGeneralMIDIInstrumentsstandardlist).Thefulllistof

    GeneralMIDIprogramnumbersisgiveninAppendixAattheendofthismanual.

    Method 1 is useul i you want to cycle through dierent instruments or the purpose o comparing and choosing which sou

    works best in your song Method 2 is more useul i you want to select a specifc sound patch, as is the case here

    IftheOctavebuttonshavebeenassignedtocontroltheprogramnumber(Method1),thelightsabovethe

    buttons will not change, since it is not possible to have a program with a negative value Pressing both the

    buttonstogetherwillrecallProgram0,whichselectstherstsoundpatchonanysynthesizercapableofprocessingMIDI

    program changes

    Bank LSB and Bank MSB

    Programchangesarethemostcommonlyusedmessagestochangeinstrumentsandvoices.However,thenumberof

    instrumentsaccessibleusingonlytheprogramchangeMIDIcommandislimitedto128.Sincesomedeviceshavemoretha

    128 voices, they require a method to organize their large number o sounds into banks These devices then access the sou

    withinthesebanksbyusingprogramchangemessages.SeechapterMIDIMessagesExplainedforadditionalinformation

    Generally, these devices use Bank LSB (Least Signifcant Byte) and Bank MSB (Most Signifcant Byte) change messages

    KeyStudio can send these bank change messages in two possible ways:

    1) Incremental/Decremental Bank LSB and Bank MSB Change:

    1 Press the Edit Mode button

    2 Press the black key above G1 (G#1) or Bb1 (A#1), representing Bank LSB or Bank MSB respectively Now the

    Octave buttons can be used to change Bank LSB or Bank MSB

    2) Using the Quick Select Method:

    1 Press the Edit Mode button

    2 Press the black key above G4 (G#4), or Bb4 (A#4), representing Bank LSB or Bank MSB respectively

    3 Press the white keys associated with the bank number you wish to select, and then press C5 (Enter) For exam

    pressing the C4 (the number 3), A3 (the number 1), and C5 (Enter) keys in this step selects bank 31

    As with Program changes, i the Octave buttons are selected to vary the Bank LSB or MSB number (Method 1

    the lights above the buttons will not change, since it is not possible to have a Bank with a negative value Pressing both the

    buttons together will recall Bank 0

    Bank change messages must be ollowed by a program change message in order to recall a sound Bank change message

    by themselves do not activate a sound, but only locate and access a predefned location o a set (bank) o 128 sounds

    PLEASE NOTE: Each time the keyboard is turned o, optional MIDI parameters assigned to the Octave buttons will be l

    When the keyboard is powered up, the Octave buttons will deault to controlling octave shit.

    Other Assignable Controller

    messages KeyStudio accepts controller numbers 0-131 Numbers beyond 127 are a proprietary method M-Audio uses to simpliy

    thetransmissionofcertain,otherwisemorecomplicatedmulti-partMIDImessages.Afulllistofcontrollervaluesisgivenatthebac

    To assign the Volume slider to a certain MIDI parameter:

    1 Press the Edit Mode button

    2. PresstheblackkeyaboveD4(D#4),representingSLIDERASSIGN.

    3. UsetheNumericalDataEntrykeysG3B4toenterthenumberofthecontrollervalueyouwanttoassigntothe

    Volumeslider.

    4 Press the ENTER key (C5)

    Ifyoumakeanerrorwhileenteringthenumericaldatavalue,youcanpresstheCANCELkey(C1)toexitEditmodewithout

    changingtheMIDICCassignedtotheVolumeslider.

    PLEASE NOTE: Each time the keyboard is turned o, optional MIDI parameters assigned to the Volume slider or

    Modulation wheel will be lost. Each time the keyboard is powered up, the Volume slider will deault to being assigned toVolume (MIDI CC 07), and the Modulation wheel will deault to being assigned to modulation (MIDI CC 01).

    YouwillndmanyMIDIdevicesrespondtoprogramchangecommandsandmanyareorganizedaccordingtotheGMlisting.In

    GeneralMIDIdevices,differentsoundsareorganizedinthesamewayfromdevicetodevice.Pianosoundsareintheirparticular

    place, string sounds are in their place, drum sounds are in their place, and so on All GM devices (both hardware and sotware

    soundmodules)areclearlylabeledassuch,soyouknowthattheirsoundsareorganizedintheGeneralMIDIstructure.WhenaG

    devicereceivesaMIDIprogramchange,itcallsupatypeofsoundthatyouexpectfromtheGMsoundset.Allnon-GMMIDIsou

    modulescallupuniquesoundsfromtheirmemoryuponreceivingMIDIprogramchanges.Sincethesoundsinanon-GMdevicea

    not arranged in a particular order, you need to take a look at the device itsel to see which sound you want and at which location in

    thememoryitresides.ManyVSTinstrumentssuchasNativeInstrumentsFM7orthesynthmodulesinPropellerheadReasonarenon-GM devices

    You can send program change, bank LSB and bank MSB messages directly rom the KeyStudio keyboard Please consult the

    Advanced KeyStudio Features in Edit Mode section o this User Guide or urther details

    NRPN/RPNs

    Non-registered parameter numbers (NRPNs) are device-specifc messages that enable you to control synths and sound modules

    viaMIDI.TheMIDIspecicationdenesopenparameternumberstoallowmanufacturerstospecifytheirowncontrollers.Themor

    commonoftheseareregisteredbytheMIDIManufacturersAssociationandarenowpartoftheMIDIspecication(hencetheterm

    RegisteredParameterNumbersRPNs).(SeeAppendixB)EachNRPN/RPNhasanassociated2-bytenumber.Thetwobytes

    allow or 128 values each (An RPN or NRPN message is made up o two parts: the MSB and the LSB message Both o thesemessages together constitute an RPN or NRPN command) This allows or 16,384 values in total

    MIDIcontrollers98and99representtheNRPNLSBandMSBrespectively,while100and101representtheRPNLSBand

    MSBmessages(seetheMIDIcontrollerslistinAppendixB).TotransmitanNRPN/RPNmessage,theseLSBandMSBcontroller

    messages are sent along with their user-specifed values A urther controller message and value needs to be sent to speciy the

    (coarseorne)valueadjustment.Thisisspeciedbycontrollernumber6(dataentry)forcoarseadjustmentsornumber38forne

    adjustments.

    Troubleshootin

    11KeyStudiohasbeentestedinawiderangeofsystemsandoperatingconditions.However,therearevirtuallylimitlessnumbersofoperating scenarios, any o which could aect your systems perormance Though this section cannot cover all possible situation

    youmayencounter,wewouldliketooffersomesuggestionsfordealingwithpossibleproblems.Ifyouarestillnotabletondthe

    answer you are looking or, please eel ree to contact M-Audio technical support or urther assistance

    Problem 1: My KeyStudio suddenly stopped working ater having perormed fne since installation.

    Solution 1: Close any music applications you are using, switch KeyStudio o, and restart your computer Once your compu

    has completely restarted, switch KeyStudio back on

    Problem 2: I have connected a sustain pedal to my M-Audio keyboard, but its unction is reversed.

    Solution 2: The polarity o the sustain pedal is calculated by the keyboard when it is powered up On power up, the sustainpedalisassumedtobeintheOFFposition.Ifyouwantthesustainpedaltobeoffwhenitisnotpressed,makesurethepe

    isnotpressedwhenyoupowerup.Alsochecktoseeifthereisapolarityswitchonyourfootpedal.Itispossibletousethis

    switch to change oot pedal polarity as well Another way to reverse the sustain pedals polarity is to keep it pushed while

    powering on your KeyStudio keyboard

    Problem 3: KeyStudio does not trigger sounds in my music sotware application.

    Solution 3:BesureKeyStudioisselectedastheMIDIinputdevicewithinyoursoftware.

    Problem 4: I cannot locate the KeyStudio USB keyboard in my sotwares MIDI devices dialog box.

    Solution 4: KeyStudio requires a powered USB port Try plugging KeyStudio into a dierent USB port or powered USB hubconnected to your computer
