The French term, “terroir” (pronounced tear-wah), is the term for
the conditions that make a specific grape-growing site, and its wine,
distinctive. It comes from a philosophy, originated in Europe, that a
multitude of influences in nature surrounding a vineyard, or wine
region, create a wine’s character. These natural factors include soil
composition, day and nighttime temperatures, the amount of rainfall,
the direction of the sun, just to name a few.
Terroir explains why some of the best California Pinot Noir, for
example, originate in the regions of Carneros and Russian River. They
may be separated by about 30 miles but they share similar soils and
experience the same cooling effects from bodies of water nearby –
either the ocean, in the case of the Russian River area, or San Pablo
Bay for the Carneros region. Both regions produce rich and compl
wines made from Pinot Noir grapes that reflect their similar terroir
Over centuries of winemaking around the world, it has been
learned that the uniqueness of a specific location is what creates th
“personality” of a wine. Although the French word “terrior” has no
English translation, it has become a term used everywhere to descr
this interaction of the many factors that influence a grape-growing
site.
So, the next time you taste a great wine, whether Pinot Noir,
Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon or Zinfandel, take notice of whe
the grapes were grown. If a distinct site is listed on the label as the
origin of the grapes, such as the name of a specific vineyard or an
official wine geographic region (also known as an appellation) kno
that you are tasting more than just the grapes that made the wine.
You are experiencing “terrior” – everything in nature that makes th
site or region, unique.

There’s one thing you can count on as a farmer: one year’s
weather will never be like any other. What that means in practice isthat the past only serves as example, not as a roadmap. And
especially in a year like this one, where none of the established past
patterns seem to hold and our fourth year of drought is with us,
how we strategize about the weather and our water use makes the
difference between having grapes to make into wine and having to
take a pass after three bumper harvests in a row. What makes this
doubly fraught is that each year’s decisions in response to the
weather affect two years’ crops.
Why? Because vines aren’t like other annual or row crops. If you
look closely at a vine, you will see both this year’s and next year’s
buds, which is why weather damage can be such a problem: a
grower is forced to contemplate the loss of multiple years’ income.
Inside each bud are really small leaves, and from them come the
leaves, canes, shoots and grapes; each bud has concentric layers,
which is why weather damage is along a continuum. Lack of
irrigation water doesn’t just impact yields during harvest – it can
also impact this and next year’s vines through the inability to
provide enough water for frost protection. Minor damage, generally
from frost, may reduce the yield a bit, but it’s the more severe
darkening, akin to frostbite, which is the real issue, guaranteeing a
crop loss of at least fifty percent, if not more. Equally, the phloem,
the “bark” on the exterior of canes and vine trunks, can also be
damaged by cold, causing crop losses, too.
The best way to understand winegrowing options for weather
mitigation is to “walk” through the vineyard throughout the year.
Winter cold, even as cold as we got this past year in most of the
United States, is actually no issue because the vines are dormant,
which is why all fifty states have vineyards. Spring is when weather
has the most impact on two years’ crops because the weather often
flipflops quite quickly, and rain at an early
point can be helpful to bring temperatures up while later in theseason causing crop damage via hail or thunderstorms’ winds.
Shattering of the bloming flowers can disrupt clusters or keep th
from being fertilized, yet when faced with a frost event earlier in
year, rain is welcomed as it brings the temperature up above
freezing. Summer and autumn heat can also be an issue because
too-high a temperature can cause vines to shut down, shriveling
even sunburning grapes, and also potentially killing the vine in t
process, especially if there is little to no water left at the end of
season.
This is not our first go-around with drought in California win
country, of course. There are actually lots of options for mitigatioand the best, as you might expect, are set up so as to help solve
more than one problem. Believe it or not, something as simple as
low trellising versus high has an impact as far as weather goes. Lo
trellises in the wrong locales are more subject to frost damage, an
higher trellises can provide shade for adjacent rows. How the tre
is trimmed in winter and early spring prior to budbreak is thus o
strategy, and there is projected to be a move back to “California
Sprawl” from the VSP “candelabra” currently seen all over as the
North Coast replants in the next few years for this reason: not on
does this provide different vine growth and Brix gains, but it also
helps as regards frost or hail damage during April and May, whenthe buds break and the vines flower, and impacts overall vine wa
needs, making it possible to produce more on less irrigation.
Mechanical options to work around water deficits abound, too
The wind machines, those twirling engines and fans on poles; th
“Inverted Sinks” or “Air Dams,” which essentially turn the wind
machine to provide a frost sink to pull cold air down and away
from vines on hillsides and slopes; and smudge pots, the gas fire
heaters for the end of vineyard rows which work in combination
with wind machines – all are ways to work in with the shapes of
the land itself to mitigate the negatives of weather while allowing
the “terroir,” the locational distinctiveness, to still show through the grapes and finished wines by “moving the weather” since the
vines really cannot. It’s not always easy or cheap, but the results
worth it, no? Enjoy!

Solvang-based Lucky Dogg Winery
Ower/Winemaker, Brent Melville, and
General Manager/Owner, Mead Whippo,
took home three medals—one for each of
their three wines entered—from the recent
2015 Los Angeles International Wine
Competition, as well as a Best of Class awardand a 97-point score for the boutique
winery’s limited production 2013 “Brady’s
Blend” Syrah; this Syrah earned one of the
top 25 highest scores in the competition, and
the highest point rating for any of the
entered Syrahs.
Lucky Dogg Winery’s 2013 “Brady’s
Blend” Syrah also earned a Gold Medal in the
competition, joining its sister wines—the
2013 Lucky Dogg Viognier and 2013 Rosé of
Pinot Noir, which respectively won Silver
and Bronze medals in the competition.
The Los Angeles International Wine
Competition showcases the finest domestic
and international vintages through a wine
tasting event that is widely considered to be
one of the most prestigious in the United
States. The competition’s esteemed panel of
judges uses a blind-tasting method,
maintaining the highest standards of integrity
and professionalism that has remained the
competition’s foundation for its 76 years.
Lucky Dogg Winery officially launched in
late June 2014, initially pouring five releases
in their Solvang wine tasting room: 2013
Viognier, 2013 Rosé of Pinot Noir, 2013
Pinot Noir, 2013 Syrah and 2013 Reserve
Syrah. All of these wines derived from grapes
grown at the Central Coast vineyard, Verna’s
Vineyard (Cat Canyon, Los Alamos in Santa
Barbara County), whose farming operations
were at the time of Lucky Dogg’s launch,
managed by Lucky Dogg Winery’s Brent
Melville.
In the past 11 months, Lucky Dogg
Winery has increased its production from an
exclusive 750 cases to a total case-count of
approximately 1,100, in an effort to keep its
“garagiste” status, but also fulfill wine cluballotments, as well retail and wholesale
requests. Lucky Dogg sold through almost all
of its award-winning vintage 2013 wines,
with plans in place to release their 2014
Viognier and 2014 Rosé of Pinot Noir in mid
June of this year.
Lucky Dogg’s wine production duo,
Melville and Whippo, focus on creating
wines that are “all about balance”; the pair
refers to their production methods as
“holistic,” with an end goal of producing
wines that represent the grapes’ origins in
reference to both the physical traits of the
respective terroir, and their original, positive
energy and all-around good vibes.
The Lucky Dogg winemaking philosophy
revolves around the notion that perfect fruit
will require little-to-no manipulation in the
winemaking process and to this end, Lucky
Dogg wines are barreled in neutral oak or
kept in stainless steel tanks, allowing the
essence of the vineyard and the purity of the
grapes—and of the wines—to shine.
Lucky Dogg Winery’s physical winery
facility is located in Buellton, in a cooperative
winemaking facility bearing the name Le
Crush. The facility houses Lucky Dogg’s
winemaking operations with room for
additional, interested labels. Lucky Dogg also
recently started a custom bottling program
for restaurants wanting their own house wine
label.
Melville and Whippo leveraged the
reputation of Verna’s Vineyard for produci
Burgundian and Northern Rhône-style Sa
Barbara County wines, with the February
2014 release of a stainless steel Chardonna
to accompany the label’s original Viognier,
Rosé of Pinot Noir, Pinot Noir and Syrah—the other varietals currently planted at
Verna’s Vineyard.
Lucky Dogg Winery is currently sold a
28 different California restaurants, wine b
and shops, and the label will be expandin
its availability to Florida, Nevada and othe
U.S. markets in the near future.
Lucky Dogg Winery’s tasting room is
located at 1607 Mission Drive, Suite 102
(at the corner of Mission Drive and Atterd
Road) in Solvang. Lucky Dogg is open
Sunday through Thursday from 12:00 to
6:00 p.m, and Friday and Saturday from
12:00 to 7:30 p.m. The Lucky Dogg tastin
room is both dog- and kid-friendly; limite
lot parking is available behind the buildin
as well as ample street parking. Lucky Dog
Winery is also available for parties and
special events.

room directly, please call (805) 691-9774.

In 1973, Chamisal Vineyards became the first winery to plant
vines in Edna Valley, embarking on what is now a long history of
producing wines that are bold, intriguing and complex. The 85-ac
estate’s close proximity to the Pacific Ocean, and resulting cool
climate, are ideal for growing wonderfully distinctive Chardonnay
and Pinot Noir—the varietals for which Chamisal is best known—
the site is also home to Syrah, Grenache and Pinot Gris. Winemak
Fintan du Fresne’s philosophy embraces a sense of purity and
simplicity, and Chamisal’s wines always allow the naturalcharacteristics of their remarkable vineyard sites to shine through.
Naturally, the ideal way to experience the wines is to visit the
winery itself. Known for warm, friendly hospitality, the Chamisal
tasting room is housed in a lovely, modern barn that opens up ont
beautiful patios overlooking the vineyard and the valley. They offe
guests multiple ways to immerse themselves in the beauty and
tranquility of Edna Valley, as well as options for enjoying a glass or
bottle of wine on site.
“Putting customers first and making them feel like family is our
mission,” says Andrea de Palo, Director of Consumer Sales. “The

intimate tasting opportunities, as well as the reserve and tailored
wine experiences, are something our guests and wine club members
appreciate.”
Chamisal Vineyards offers two tasting experiences to the general
public: the Classic Flight ($15), which includes four wines from the
winery’s line of premium Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and the EstateFlight ($25), a hosted tasting that includes five wines from Chamisal’s
rotating list of Estate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Rhône-style wines,
as well as small lot wines when available.
While both tastings are available in the winery’s friendly,
comfortable tasting room, the Classic Flight can also be enjoyed on
Chamisal’s garden patio, which overlooks the beautiful Santa Lucia
Mountains. Likewise, the Estate Flight can be experienced on the
winery’s estate patio, which affords a breathtaking vista of the estate
vineyard’s soft rolling hills that stretch toward the Pacific Ocean. Both
tastings are complimentary for wine club members, and tasting fees
are waived with wine purchase.
Chamisal also has a dedicated picnic space in a tranquil settingwith stunning views of the Estate Vineyard and Santa Lucia
Mountains. Here, guests can enjoy Chamisal wines by the glass or
bottle.
“We’ve really tried to think of all the different ways our guests
spend their time here and how they like to enjoy our wines, and then
we created small spaces and intimate tasting experiences to
accommodate all of them,” says Andrea, whose staff is proud of the
fact that they welcome repeat visitors again and again. “We think we
have the right experience for each guest.”

BY KIM MURPHYRODRIGUES
A Paso Robles mainstay for over twenty years, Le Vigne Winery
has a longstanding history of being a destination for wine and food
enthusiasts. Originally home to cattle and hay, the Filippini family
settled on the property in the early ’60s, transitioning to wine grap
in the early ’80s.
Le Vigne, or “The Vineyard” in Italian, is where it all begins.
Sylvia and Walter Filippini hold the Old World tradition in the
highest regard, believing their wines are truly a reflection of the
vineyard and vintage. Guests to the newly remodeled tasting room
have a wide array of wines to select from—six wines for a $7 tastinfee—including a refreshing Rosé, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and
Bella Moscato, to a bold Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon, Caberne
Franc, an esoteric Tannat and the newly-released Acquarello
Vineyard Cabernet. The Filippini family also owns Peacock Chees
Company, which treats visitors to an amazing wine and cheese
pairing flight ($12) at the winery’s cheese and charcuterie bar. The
winery features Le Vigne estate wines—produced in exceptional
years.
The winery’s La Famiglia Wine Club allows guests exclusive
benefits including priority access to Le Vigne wines and the ability
add on a “Gourmet” option which includes cheese selections paire
with the wines in the club shipment, or the “La Tavola” option tha
includes seasoning and a personal cooking demonstration at the
winery.
Le Vigne Winery is the perfect setting for a group visit, with
welcoming picnic grounds, a patio and an outdoor wine park. The
tasting room is filled with warm hospitality and great attention to
detail, combining natural elements of wood and stone, with an
intricate antique chandelier from the Filippini family’s private
collection—providing the focal point of the room as it lights up th
oval bar. An exclusive benefit to visitors of Le Vigne Winery is the new V
room, which is just off the tasting room, featuring antique wooden
doors from the late 1800s. A recent visit found the room filled with
guests enjoying a private tasting. Guests can also enjoy a VIP tour,
which includes a full winery tour, barrel sampling and cheese tasti
($20 per person with advance reservation).

WINE COUNTRY THIS MONTH JULY 20
BY DON SONDERLING
It was a “long and winding road” that led Stephen Ross Dooley
from his boyhood home in the Minnesota River Valley to producin
world class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in California’s Edna ValleySpending summers on a dairy farm in Michigan, Dooley always kn
he wanted to do “something” in agriculture. While attending
Mankato State University, an article in TIME magazine about the
U.C. Davis wine program and fledgling California wine industry
caught his interest. Figuring that a career blending farming, scienc
and creativity while making wine would be fulfilling, Dooley enrol
at U.C. Davis, and graduated in 1977 with a degree in Enology. L
did Dooley know that a classmate of his was part of the Louis M.
Martini family. Dooley’s first industry job was shoveling pomace ou
of fermentation tanks at Louis M. Martini Winery.
Ten years with Martini—working his way from the bottom of thtank to assistant winemaker—gave Dooley a sound foundation for
his craft and career. While at Martini, he worked a harvest in Sout
Africa and after leaving Martini, worked a harvest in Western
Australia, gaining valuable experience. Returning to the states,
Dooley joined the Chalone Wine Group spending seven years as
general manager and winemaker for Edna Valley Vineyards.
In 1994, he launched his own company and label, Stephen Ros
producing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the Edna Valley AVA.
In 2001, he partnered with Talley Vineyards to plant Stone Corral
Vineyard, and Stephen Ross Estate Pinot Noirs were born.

The Edna Valley proved to be the perfect location
for growing and making the Burgundian style Pinot
Noir and Chardonnay that are his passion. Talking to
Dooley, you are drawn in by his enthusiasm and
excitement about all things wine. An avid gardener,
he believes strongly that wine is made in the
vineyard, and sources grapes from his own and other
prestigious vineyards on the Central Coast. Drawing
on his decades of experience, his wines express the
individuality and nuances of the vineyards and land.
Dooley focuses on single-vineyard designated Pinot
Noir, Chardonnay and Zinfandel, each bottle
reflective of the terroir and microclimate of the
grapes.
From the original release of 325 cases of the 1994
vintage, total production has grown to about 5,000
cases of Stephen Ross; 2,000 cases of Flying Cloud;
and 8,000 cases of Jackhammer—a separate wine
project launched in 2012. He also performs
consulting and custom crush services for a handful
of clients.
Dooley’s philosophy is simple: “I stay true to the
varieties that grow well in this region and to awinemaking style that works best for those varieties.
I produce wines that I am happy to drink and proud
to present to the world.”
Taste the Stephen Ross elegance and commitment
to quality when you visit the tasting room, located at
178 Suburban Road in San Luis Obispo, open
Thursday througho Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to
5:00 p.m. You are sure to be impressed.
