CHARLOTTE — It bringsupwards of 28,000 peopleto the Eaton County Fair-grounds every July.

To nearby residents theEaton County 4-H andYouth Fair is a close-to-home summer escape, butorganizers say the six-daytradition — which will runJuly 11 to 16 this year — isthe result of a year’s hardwork and dedication.

Randy Johnson has beena member of the 15-seatfair board for 12 years.

He said the group ismore than an overseeingauthority for the fair — itis also the caretaker forthe fairgrounds, with itsvolunteers at a moment’snotice rolling up theirsleeves to repair barndoors and remodel build-ings.

“Being on the fair boardis like having a secondjob,” admitted Johnson.“We are a working board, fixing things on thegrounds. We only contractout things that we have to.”

In fact, in the past yearthe fair board — whichincludes a licensed electri-cian and mechanic — com-pletely remodeled KardelHall, put new floor drainsin the barns were studentsshowcase their livestock

and performed generalupkeep on other buildings.

Johnson said thoseinvolved don’t mind.“We’re here for the kids,”he said. “We like what wedo.”

Small profitsTheo Savage is the

board’s vice president anda 27-year veteran with thecounty’s fair. He said lastyear the event — whichincludes everything frommidway carnival rides, toarts and crafts and grand-stand events like demoli-tion derby — brought in$60,000.

Any profits made oneyear are used to financenext year’s fair. Savagesaid the event has neverlost money, but simplybreaking break even hasbeen a struggle someyears.

Savage said last yearpeople turned up at thefair, having decided not tospend money on a vacationaway from home. He hopesto see more of that thisyear. “I’m hoping we get alot of people, local people, who can’t go on vacationand will come down to thefair even if they haven’tbeen here for a few years.”

If they do, fair-goerswill find one $5 admissionsfee at the gate. Ridesand grandstand events cost
