Dear Faithful of Immaculate Conception, "Be who you were created to be, and you will set the world on fire." This upcoming Saturday, six young men and women will approach the altar to receive the holy Sacrament of Confirmation. I am very grateful to His Excellency Bishop Muhich for delegating the faculties to confer this Sacrament. I consider it an honor to begin working with the young ones of the parish, and I am already impressed by the results of the formation you are giving them. Your attention to detail is noted, and greatly appreciated. I know you are well aware of the gravity of these holy ceremonies; but also of the spiritual joy they bring! In the quote above, St. Catherine of Siena indicates each of us is a unique creation of the divinity. I can think of no better words to encourage the confirmandi with. Each has a calling from the Divine that no one else can fill. Each is offered the fire of the Holy Ghost, and enabled to bring it to the world in a particular way. "I am come to cast fire on the earth; and what will I, but that it be kindled? (Luke 12:49)" Go and set the world on fire! Deus Vult!, Fr. You are welcome to pick up a copy of the Novena booklet near the entrance of the church and join in, even if late. Toward the back of the booklet you can find a tally sheet to keep track of your progress. We have people from around the country joining us. May God grant our petitions! Spiritual Adoption Baby Shower - Birthright was overwhelmed by the response of Immaculate Conception Parish to their appeal. Their facilities will open again at the end of the month for walk-in-clients, so they have been restocked just in time. May God reward your generous donations! Catechism Resumes - Classes will resume at the beginning of September, and for the most part will take place on the first three Sundays of the month after both Masses. There will be five separate classes and Fr. Bartholomew will teach the oldest class. Since the "Brick Beauty" is closed, the church basement will be partitioned into five areas for teachers' use. Pandemic regulations will be carefully considered and posted with the schedule before the academic year begins. Confirmation This Saturday! - Thanks to his Excellency Bishop Muhich for approving confirmations on August 22nd, Feast of the Immaculate Heart! Holy Mass will be at the regular time this Saturday, and the ceremony will begin at 11:30 AM. All are welcome to attend! Practice will be on Friday after the morning Mass. Confessions at 9:30AM are cancelled on that day. Church Rewiring - Soon enough, the long overdue rewiring of Immaculate Conception will begin. This is partly a safety precaution, and partly an effort to improve the ambient lighting of the church. The funds for this have already been raised and will be taken from the Restoration Fund. The projected date to begin is September. Collection Counters Needed - "Freely have you received, freely give." If only the church's bill collectors would heed Our Lord's words! Things being what they are, the church's administration needs to operate efficiently, and this can't be done without skilled help. If you are good with numbers, please volunteer to be a part of the new collection teams. It is essential and increases the glory of God's House. St. Matthew will be patron of these teams. Account for Altar Flowers - If you would like to honor the Blessed Sacrament, Our Lady and St. Joseph with flowers, simply earmark your donation as "Altar Flowers". We have a separate account for this purpose. Your generosity will bring honor where it belongs. Prayer, Fasting, and Pleasing Ourselves an Excerpt from a Sermon of the Curé of Ars My dear brethren, we read in holy Scripture that the Lord, while speaking to His people of the necessity to do good works in order to please Him and to become included in the number of saints, said to them: 'The things that I ask are not above your powers; to do them it is not necessary for you to lift yourselves to the clouds nor to cross the seas. All that I command is, so to speak, in your hands, in your hearts, and all around. I can easily repeat the very same thing to you, my dear brethren. It is true that we shall never have the happiness of going to Heaven unless we do good works, but let us not be afraid of that, my dear children. What Jesus Christ demands of us are not the extraordinary things or those beyond our power. He does not require that we should be all day in the church or that we should do enormous penances, that is to say, to the extent of ruining our health, or even to that of giving all our substance to the poor (although it is very true that we are obliged to give as much as we possibly can to the poor, which we should do both to please God, Who commands it, and also to atone for our sins). It is also true that we should practice mortification in many things to make reparation for our sins. There is no doubt but that the person who lives without mortifying himself is someone who will never succeed in saving his soul. There is no doubt but that, although we cannot be all day in the church, which yet should be a great joy for us, we do know very well that we should never omit our prayers, at least in the morning and at night. But, you will say, there are plenty who cannot fast, others who are not able to give alms, and others who have so much to do that often they have great difficulty in saying their prayers in the morning and at night. How can they possibly be saved, then, if it is necessary to pray continuously and to do good works in order to obtain Heaven. Because all your good works, my dear brethren, amount to prayer, fasting, and almsdeeds, which we can easily perform as you shall see. Yes, my dear brethren, even though we may have poor health or even be infirm, there is a fast which we can easily perform. You are in some situation in which you can indulge your appetite? Instead of doing so, you take, without making it obvious, something which appeals to you the least. When you are buying chattles or cloths, you do not choose what merely appeals to you; there again is a fast whose reward waits for you at the door of heaven to help you enter.
