Goochland County held its final round of meetings recently designed to gather public comments on estab-lishing new urban development areas (UDAs) in the county.

The final session focused on the courthouse area, and plans to designate areas for higher density, mixed use development. The General Assembly mandated their creation two years ago, but there is politi-cal uncertainty surrounding the new guidelines.

Although there is a concerted effort in the General Assembly to

make UDA mandates optional, county planner Tom Coleman said his staff must proceed by standards of the current law.

UDAs are areas designated for future growth that feature walkable neighborhoods, a combination of residential and commercial devel-opment and are targeted for areas already served by public water and sewer.

ing in certain areas of the county,” county administra-tor Rebecca Dickson told the gathering.

Recommendations put forward in these meetings were the result of feedback obtained from the public in the first round of meetings, and included some changes.

“What you will see tonight are recommenda-tions around possible areas for designation for higher dendsity that would impact the county’s Comprehensive Plan,” Dickson added. The recommendations would not affect zoning.

The new recommenda-tions reduce the number of acres originally identified

in the courthouse area, and places the UDA designated area along Route 6.

Colleman said the first step in the process was to establish projected popula-tion estimates for the county, dictating how many acres would need to be set aside for UDA developments.

Currently, there are 750 acres in Centerville and about 130 acres identified in the courthouse area that could be used for UDA develop-ment. Dickson stressed that development in these areas would be market driven, and residents outside the zones could still seek higher density rezonings under current code guidelines.

What we want to hear from you tonght is whether or not we’re hitting the mark

with the recommendations,” Dickson said. She said staff hopes to present the Board of Supervisors with the recom-mendations at their August meeting.

Patti Rosner said she thought any action on the proposals should be deferred until after upcoming elections. There are ongoing efforts in the General Assembly to make the mandate optional for localities.

“Please follow the course of other cities, counties and towns like our nieghbors in Roanoke and Chesterfield that have already decided to delay any vote until after the election,” Rosner said.

She said the series of meet-ings had accomplished one very important mission.

“The one positive thing

that has come out of this pro-cess is that many residents are interested in being involved in this process,” she said. “I believe once the mandate issue is resolved, these folks will be back to work with the planners to have more of a viable county for the future,” Rosner said.

The process is still far from complete. Once the Board of Supervisors reviews the rec-ommendations and decides on what areas to leave in or take out, they will refer the land use changes to the Planning Commission. Public hearings will accompany any actions taken by either body.

“All that we have done is designate things for their (the board’s) discussion,” Dickson said. “They might pick and choose on August 2.”

The temperature might have hit triple-digits in parts of Goochland County last Thursday, but the wit and wis-dom of area residents still was intact as they spoke about the inability of Congress at that time to pass a debt-reduction plan.

“This thing has been going on for three months or so,” said Bobby Parrish. “We’ve gone through this before, and the government has never shut down. I don’t think they will let it shut down now.”

Parrish said he thought the key to revitalizing the economy was to lower gas prices.

“The economy will come back when gas prices are low-ered,” he said. “The problem with gas prices now is every-body in Congress owns gas stock, and they don’t want to see the price of gas go down because then their stock

wouldn’t be worth as much. When gas prices go d o w n , people will be able to afford to buy things. They’ll be able to take a vacation instead of a staycation.”

Brett Blaisdell said getting a debt-reduction plan passed wasn’t going to be easy.

“I don’t know what Congress is going to do or when they’ll get something done,” he said. “I try not to give it too much thought. The problem is too complex to figure out, and any improvements will be short and temporary.”

Amin Rayess, the owner of Courthouse Pizza, offered his own philosophical view.

“The road goes on forever and the music never changes,” he said when asked his opin-ion of why Congress seemed

unable to get any-thing done about debt-relief. “The w o r k i n g man will always be the work-ing man, and politicians will always be politicians. They’ll get something done, but it will be a long term fix with short term problems.”

Phil White, owner of Patriot Motorsports 2, compared the bickering in Congress to a marriage.

“Somebody has got to bend more than the other,” he said. “It’s like a marriage where someone has to give a little more than the other person to get something done.

“I think they’ll get it resolved soon, because they have too,” White added. “A lot of bad things can happen if they don’t.”

One issue he has particu-

lar interest in is health care insur-ance.

“I’m a U.S. citi-zen with-out any health insur-ance,” White said. “If I was the President, I’d go to Congress and tell them you have six m o n t h s to come up with a work-able health insurance plan. If you can’t come up with something in six months, I’ll cancel all of your government funded health insurance, and then you can buy your own like anyone else that doesn’t have health insurance. I believe if they had to pay for their own health insurance, they’d get it done.”

Goochland Republicans sense a pivotal election com-ing up in November.

Last Wednesday evening they got ready for it, pick-ing candidates to support for supervisor, school board and constitutional offices.

“These are very capable individuals,” said Goochland Republican Committee Chair Ben Slone.

With about 100 people in attendance at Grace Episcopal Church in Goochland Courthouse, the party picked Board of Supervisors can-didates Manuel Alvarez in District 2, Ned Creasey in District 3 and Rudy Butler in District 4.

The party was sched-uled to hold a canvas Aug. 2 in District 1 between Phil

Hunnel and Susan Lascolette and in District 5 between Courtney Hyers and Ken Peterson.

Goochland Republicans also endorsed candidates for School Board in each district: Mike Payne in District 1, Kevin Hazzard in District 2, John Lumpkins in District 3, Beth Hardy in District 4 and John Wright in District 5.

Interim Treasurer Pamela Cooke Johnson got the nod for the Treasurer nomi-nation while incumbent Clairborne Stokes was nom-inated for another term as Commonwealth’s Attorney.

While waiting for the vari-ous committees to do their work, the crowd heard from guest speakers Bryan Rhode and Tom Garrett, both can-didates for the newly created 22nd State Senate District.

“I hope it means change,”

said temporary chair Pat Schaefer after the meeting. “We have some awesome can-didates.”

Slone said he was pleased

with the turnout and the number of candidates.

“I see this as a watershed event,” said Slone. “The peo-ple will have a real choice.”

ment of the Goochland County Republican Committee at their mass meeting last Wednesday night, said he doesn’t plan to become a career politician.

“I’m looking at one term, maybe two terms max,” he said. “I don’t think politics should be a career.”

Alvarez’s journey to Goochland County has been a long one, starting from his birth-place, Matanzas, Cuba, a port town about 100 kilometers east of Havana.

After the revolution and Fidel Castro’s rise to power, Alvarez’s parents sent him, along with his sister, to Spain in 1968 when he was 14. After six months there in a Catholic refugee camp and a home in Madrid run by German Lutherans, he came to the U.S.

“We flew into New York City and had to circle the airport sev-eral times,” said Alvarez, who had just turned 15. He recalled see-ing the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building.

His father and mother came to Richmond, where Alvarez and

his sister had been placed, to join them. Although he spoke almost no English, he attended John Marshall High School and then Maggie Walker, where he gradu-ated in 1972. He has been a natu-ralized U.S. citizen since 1974.

Alvarez already had a job at Sears when he graduated high school, thanks to attend-ing Richmond Technical Center. Over the years he took classes at J. Sargeant Reynolds and Virginia Commonwealth University.

He now works for Altria, as a Program Manager. He and his wife Grace have been married for 34 years.

Alvarez moved to Goochland in 2004 and immediately encoun-tered one of the problems still on his agenda to address: broadband cable access.

“It is as critical now as the telephone used to be,” said Alvarez.

“It’s hard to bring a big company to Goochland with-out having access to broad-band for their employees,” said Alvarez, who, like many, some-times depends on internet access to work from home.

Having worked in

Information Technology for years, Alvarez said his back-ground in the broadband issue would be helpful to him if elected.

Other critical issues for the new candidate are finding ways to cut county expenses. He said he is against a pay increase for the new board and would vote against it.

He is not in favor of raising the current 53 cent per hundred real estate tax rate.

“I think there are still oppor-tunities for cost-cutting in the county and the schools,” he said.

Alvarez was critical of some of the budget presentations he has seen at School Board meetings.

“If I went to my boss with that kind of a presentation I would have been gone a long time ago,” he said, referring to some presentations where the numbers were not clear.

“I’ve see reshuffling but I haven’t seen any administra-tive positions go away,” said Alvarez.

On other issues, Alvarez said he is against changing the county’s form of government in the wake of the problems in

the Treasurer’s Office. He also opposes the man-

datory UDA concept, although he said he is in favor of the county studying higher density and mixed use developments on its own.

On the Tuckahoe Creek Service District (TCSD) debt issue, Alvarez said restructur-ing the debt is one option, plus the possibility of bringing new customers into the system in West Creek.

Alvarez said he looks for-ward to the unveiling of the economic development plan and the hiring of an economic devel-opment director.

And he lamented the lack of cooperation between the super-visors and the School Board.

“It’s critical for the two boards to become connected. Budget time isn’t the only time you should hear from the School Board,” he said.

If elected, Alvarez promised to be accessible to his constitu-ents.

“My commitment is I will be open to you,” he said. “The citizens will know what I am doing.”

A Goochland child care provider was a member of a pilot program to improve child care services in home based settings

From last December through July 1, Helen Payne, who operates Glory Home Child Care Preschool in her home in western Goochland, was part of the Virginia Star Quality Initiative’s statewide pilot program

“It made the environment more school like,” said Payne, who is licensed to care for up to 12 children up to four years old.

The program, a partner-ship between the Virginia

Early Childhood Foundation (VECF) and the Virginia Office of Early Childhood Development (OECD) was designed to improve the qual-ity of care in home-based set-tings.

Six communities in Virginia were selected to participate in the pilot program. A grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, commonly known as “stimulus funds,” provided money for the project.

The child-care providers received mentoring services and feedback while participat-ing in the pilot and were rated in four areas: education, quali-fications and training of staff, overall learning environment, staff-to-child ratios and pro-

gram management.“It’s a higher standard than

just having a license,” said Payne. “Someone comes out to rate you and make suggestions and set goals for you.”

Payne said the program helped her reorganize her

activity room, dividing it into sections for different subjects.

“It’s preparing the children for going into kindergarten,” she said.

New Master Naturalist Chapter in Goochland and Powhatan

Cooling centers set up in Goochland

By Maureen Moslow [email protected]

The Center for Rural Culture and Powhatan Tomorrow are pleased to announce the creation of Virginia’s newest Master Naturalist Chapter—the James River Master Naturalists (JRMN).

The Master Naturalist pro-gram is comprised of volun-teers who are curious about nature, enjoy the outdoors and want to contribute to natural resource management and conservation efforts in their local communities.

Virginia’s Master Naturalist Program is patterned after the Master Gardener program.

Each Master Naturalist vol-unteer begins by successfully completing a 40 hour basic training course. Upon com-pletion of the training pro-gram, all Master Naturalists are then required to perform 40 hours of volunteer service as well as receive an additional eight hours of advanced train-ing annually.

Master Naturalist volun-teers can serve their com-munities in many ways. For example, volunteers can edu-cate youths and adults about nature. They can collect data on wildlife and plant popu-lations, invasive species and water quality or they can restore wildlife habitats, build trails and install rain gardens.

The volunteer opportunities are as diverse as the Master Naturalists themselves.

Keith Flannagan, a JRMN Steering Committee mem-ber sees many opportuni-ties in the local area for Master Naturalists to serve. According to Flannagan “Master Naturalists will play a vital role as educators, citizen scientists and resource stewards at Goochland’s new county parks as well as at the new Powhatan State Park just across the river.”

The inaugural James River Master Naturalist basic train-ing class will begin in mid-Sept and will run for 13 weeks. Classes will be held on Tuesday evenings at J. Sargeant

Reynolds Community College’s Goochland Campus and at Powhatan High School. The topics covered include subjects such as Virginia’s bio-geography, ecology, birds, fish, mammals, botany, ecology and research skills. In addi-tion to classroom instruction, there will be several hands-on field trips in the local area. There are still several open-ings in the class.

For more information on becoming a Master Naturalist or learning more about the James River Master Naturalist’s program, contact Michelle Whitehurst at [email protected] or get an application at http://offices.ext.vt.edu/goochland.

Sitting on the couch, in despair

No government change needed

The yearly audit of the Goochland County Treasurer’s Office by the Virginia Auditor of Public Accounts for the years 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 contained one finding. The office was cited for not depositing Sheriff ’s fees in the amount of $2,101 per regulation for the year 2009.

The APA Audit Reports for the entire state show finding on other counties, which include failure to do bank reconcilia-tions, insufficient internal con-trols, properly secure payments and many other findings.

The APA Audit Report issued June 30, 2010 had no findings for the Goochland County Treasurer’s Office. Yet the APA Turnover Audit issued April 25, 2011 was a thirty (30) page doc-

ument listing more findings than can be posted here.

I realize the Turnover Audit was probably more comprehen-

Letters to the Editor

Would be the way I’d describe myself this Monday evening if I weren’t an optimist as I watch this truly unbelievable spectacle of grown men and women failing in their attempt to deal with a federal government out of control.

Not to mention the endless commentary on any and every TV, radio and Internet outlet. So we sent senior reporter Jim Fields out into the county to ask folks about the debt ceiling crisis. Bobby Parrish told Fields the key to revitalizing the economy was lowering gas prices. And although the question at hand was raising the allowable national debt, Parrish has a point, since if we had cheaper gas it would be a heckuva lot more likely that folks would spend more, thus generating more jobs, which would create more income tax revenue, which would allow the government to borrow less money.

But cheaper gas could only come about if there were a rational energy policy in the U.S. which allowed drilling where the oil is. That would be too simple, it seems.

Phil White had a good idea, which was to strip the Congress of their health insurance if they couldn’t reach a deal. That surely must appeal to many of those weary of a dysfunctional legislature.

Maybe a part-time Congress would be better, like the Virginia General Assembly. When not in ses-sion, at least they could do no harm, right? But then who would keep an eye on the Chief Executive?

Tuesday afternoon the Senate

finally brought the drama to an end, approving the debt ceiling bill 74-26, but it’s really just a first installment in a debate that will surely continue until the 2012 congressional and presidential elections.

So maybe this close to unwatch-able exercise will have a useful pur-pose, helping voters focus on the fundamental differences between the two parties in preparation for November 2012.

Letters – we still like them, with a few caveats

We were pleased at how many folks sent in their thoughts last week, many on the upcoming GOP canvasses in Districts 1 and 5. All we ask is that folks follow the guidelines in the letters to the editor box to the right. Send them by the post, by e-mail or by fax, it’s all good. But sign them please and take the time to include an address and a daytime phone number. We want to let read-ers know where you are writing from and we want to be able to call you up if we have questions or to verify authorship.

Letters without this information will not be published. If you leave addresses and phone numbers out we may call, if we have time but we’d rather writers would simply include the information in the first place.

Deadline for receiving letters is Monday afternoon for that week’s issue.

sive than the yearly audit but some of the finding in the Turnover Audit should have been caught in the yearly audit, i.e., no bank reconcil-iation’s for two (2) years and lack of internal controls!

Goochland does not need to change our form of Government for the Treasurers Office; we need the Commonwealth of Virginia Auditor of Public Accounts to do their job.

Carol Salmon CoeMaidens

Yes Virginia there is a passenger train at River Road West and SR522

I had the pleasure and opportunity to speak at the recent Planning Commission concerning the Conditional Use Permit for Benedictine High School to relocate to the Abbey on River Road.

I had my notes and did my research and gave what I thought was a good presen-tation. Unfortunately I did not have all the power point and large renderings that Mr. Satterwhite had for his pre-sentation, but then I figure I did not need them. I am a retired public school teach-er of 32 years and was used to an audience. While Mr. Satterwhite gave a positive presentation on all the virtues of moving the Benedictine High School to the Abby, he failed to mention all the short comings this permit should have addressed. There were primary concerns of traffic, aging sewer systems and water supply concerns and what was presented was the atti-

tude “lets wait and see what happens.” Should anything occur, the school will address the issue. Not to mention the cost and who would have to pay for them.

At some time during my presentation I noticed that the Planning Commission was not very attentive. It was only when this vote was over did I figure out why. This decision had already been made in advance and it really didn’t matter what the pub-lic wanted, the engineer and conductor had hooked all the cars together at some point in time prior to this meet-ing. The meeting was held because the law required it.

This project is the larg-est decision to make con-cerning River Road in 30 years and there was limited discussion or questions. I remember during my talk that the commission had that look on their face, just never got the connection, but I remembered my days in the classroom and the light came on…and while Mrs. Hyers gave a passionate plea to postpone this vote to another date, I do believe that letter she read was written in advance. It should be men-tioned the Mrs. Hyers is now the Chairman of the Planning Commission and if this came back, she would do the right thing. But this time around the vote had to been done the night of the meeting.

The chairman of the Planning Commission gave all a chance to speak, but would not allow one speaker to make a final statement, but gave counsel for the applica-tion all the time needed to make a closing statement. Somewhere the thought of giving the tax payer the same voice as everyone else got lost in this project.

At some point in making

policy, a government body needs to address the concern of separation of service, before you can be a representative for a case that needs to be brought back to the body you once worked for, there should be a break. Now I cannot remember the speaker who stated this at the meeting, but it went something like this, if you need something passed in Goochland County Planning Commission just get Mr. Satterwhite to represent you. The Federal Government does requires separation, so why can’t Goochland County?

Thanks for your time and just one last statement.

All aboard…have your tickets ready.

Virginia Needs Tom Garrett

Four years ago Tom Garrett was elected Commonwealth’s Attorney for Louisa County. He promised to be tough on crime and prosecute to

ensure that justice be served. He promised to be a “People’s Commonwealth’s Attorney”. After four years of steady and aggressive prosecution, he has honored his commit-ment.

Having worked very close-ly with the Commonwealth’s Attorney on several high profile cases, I have seen firsthand the commitment and dedication by Tom. He exemplifies honesty, integ-rity, and good old fashioned hard work in the preparation of each case. No stone goes unturned.

Not only has Tom served Louisa County with great distinction, he has served the Commonwealth of Virginia as an assistant Attorney General under then Attorney General Bob McDonnell.

Tom is now seeking our support as he is running for the Virginia Senate. His record speaks for itself and it is an exalted one. Virginia is at a crossroads and we need people who will make intel-ligent decisions with the wel-fare of the people at heart. Tom Garrett is such a man. I

believe in Tom and will sup-port him in the upcoming primary on August 23rd.

If you live in Prince Edward, Appomattox, Buckingham, Amherst, Cumberland, the Northern part of the city of Lynchburg,

Goochland, Fluvanna or the Eastern third of Louisa, I hope you join me in voting for Tom Garrett on August 23rd.

OBITUARIES: Death Notices

Bray

Daniel Edward Bray Jr., sank his final putt and moved on to the 19th hole on July 28, 2011 after a short ill-ness. Dan was born on April 13, 1929 in Cincinnati, Ohio

before moving to Richmond, where he spent most of his life. In 2007, he moved to Williamsburg and most recently was a resident of the Gardens of Warwick Forest in Newport News. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High

School in Richmond, Va. in 1946 and then received his BS from Hampden-Sydney College in 1950. He joined the U.S. Air Force and trained to fly the F-80 Shooting Star at Hondo Air Force Base in Texas. After serving his coun-

try, he returned to Richmond and attended the University of Richmond, T.C. Williams School of Law, graduat-ing with a Juris Doctor in 1958. Upon graduation he took a job as a lobbyist for the Virginia Manufacturer’s Association. As a staunch Republican, Dan ran for a seat in the Virginia House of Delegates in 1971. Although he did not win, he always maintained the importance of exercising his right to vote and making his opinion known. He practiced law in the Richmond area until his retirement in 1993. He was a former Boy Scout, Indian Guide and past president of the Sons of the American Revolution. He also served on the Goochland Business

Planning Commission. He was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church where he served on the Vestry and sang in the Men’s Choir. He enjoyed music and sang barbershop choral music with the Tobaccoland Chorus (now known as the Virginians) for many years. He was a loving husband and devoted father whose priori-ty was taking care of his fam-ily. He always said that his greatest accomplishment was raising his son and daugh-ter. He was also a passionate golfer and spent much of his retirement playing different courses in the area and the state. He was a member of Oak Hill Golf Course until it closed. Afterwards he joined the Hollows Golf Club, ulti-

mately working there until he moved to Williamsburg. He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel Edward Bray Sr. and Nancy Jane Pursell Bray; and his wife of 56 years, Betty Lewis Harvard Bray. He is survived by his two children, Daniel Edward Bray III and his wife, Tina, and Marianne “Molly” Bray Stout and her husband, John; and three grandchil-dren, Deborah Bray, Jeff Stout and David Stout. The family received friends at the Nelsen Funeral Home at 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, on Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2011. There was a ser-vice following at the funeral home. With Virginia experienc-ing severely high tempera-tures through the weekend, Virginians are advised to pre-pare themselves and their vehi-cles accordingly. Even though Virginia State Police Troopers and Motorist Assistance Aides are on heightened alert for disabled motorists along the highways during the extreme heat, there are still things motorists can do to make their trip safer and free of problems:

• Check all vehicle fluids. Make sure your automatic transmission, power steering, and brake fluids are full.

• Tire air pressure. Check tire air pressure during cooler times of the day for a more accurate measure.

• Pack water. Bring plenty of bottled water for you, your passengers, and pets.

• Bring a cell phone. Don’t forget the charger! Call #77 to report a vehicle emergency to Virginia State Police. When calling for help, please know your location (interstate, mile marker, overpass, etc.) and direction of travel to expedite state police response.

• Gas up. Fill up in advance of your trip in case you encounter any traffic delays.

• Vehicle problems. If your vehicle does begin experienc-ing problems, try to make it to the nearest exit. If unable to, then pull off onto the shoulder or grass so as to put as much distance as possible between you and passing traf-fic. Motorists have 24 hours to remove their disabled vehicle from the unpaved portion of a roadway (gravel, grass, etc.). Any vehicle aban-doned on a paved shoulder is deemed a traffic hazard and will be towed at the owner’s expense.

• Never leave infants, chil-dren or pets in a parked vehi-cle. According to the Centers for Disease Control, even with the windows cracked open, interior temperatures can rise almost 20 degrees Fahrenheit within the first 10 minutes. Anyone left inside is at risk for serious heat-relat-ed illnesses or even death. Infants and children who are left unattended in parked cars are at greatest risk for heat stroke, and possibly death.

When traveling with chil-dren, remember to do the following:

To remind yourself that a child is in the car, keep a stuffed animal in the car seat. When the child is buckled in, place the stuffed animal in the front with the driver.

When leaving your car, check to be sure everyone is out of the car. Do not over-look any children who have fallen asleep in the car.

State Police say be prepared while driving in hot weather

Henrico’s Glen Allen Stadium at RF&P Park has been a hotbed of base-ball action this summer and the action continues later this month.

So far the park has hosted the American Legion Junior Virginia Baseball Championship and the Triple Crown United Baseball Championships.

Triple Crown play wound up Saturday with the Connecticut Americans from

Hartford Ct. coming from behind to defeat the USA Diamondcats from Simpsonville, S.C. in the 18U champi-onship game.

Later on this month the park will host the Babe Ruth World Series for 14 and under teams. Ten teams will take part, including eight regional winners, a state team and the local Glen Allen team, said Sports and Events Supervisor Andy Crane of Henrico’s Division of Recreation and Parks.

Crane said that the American Legion event is in its fourth year at Glen Allen

Stadium.

“It’s just a great fit for the American Legion,” he said.

Eighty four teams took part in the Triple Crown Championship with the majority of the games being played at RF&P Park. Crane said the park has a contract for three more years.

“It’s really a testament to Park Services keeping the fields in such good shape,” said Crane, who said the condition of the playing fields at RF&P Park was one reason the venue drew so much action.

To apply or obtain additional information, contact Jeannine Panzera at 501-1673, email [email protected] or visit www.hen-ricocasa.org by Thursday, Sept. 1.

CASA volunteers serve as the voice of abused and neglected children in the court system. Legal experience is not required. Participants receive training to con-duct interviews, research and inves-tigate cases, provide written reports for Juvenile Court judges and assist child welfare professionals and case

attorneys. Last year, volunteers served as

advocates for 302 children, donat-ing more than 12,300 hours to their cases.

“The single thing that keeps me coming back is that I feel I truly make a difference in the lives of the children I serve,” said Susan Tellier, a CASA volunteer since 1998.

Henrico CASA is a private, nonprofit organization that works closely with the county’s Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. For more information, visit the CASA website.

Contributed Report Recent system upgrades may be

affecting text and email messages sent to subscribers of the Henrico Alert System, the county’s free, text-based notification network that delivers bulletins regarding inclem-ent weather and other emergency situations to wireless devices and email addresses.

Subscribers are encouraged to

log in to their accounts at www.henricoalert.org to confirm their wireless devices are registered cor-rectly and activated. Users can reac-tivate devices that have been dis-abled in error by following instruc-tions under the “Devices” tab.

In addition, the county is work-ing with Internet service providers to ensure that messages sent to subscribers’ email addresses are not

blocked or treated as spam.Enhancements made to coun-

ty computer servers housing the Henrico Alert System may have caused subscribers’ wireless devices to be disabled inadvertently. The upgrades also may be causing Internet service providers not to recognize the system and to block its messages.

Anna McRay, deputy coordina-

tor of emergency management for Henrico, said the Henrico Alert System should be operating properly again soon. In the mean-time, she advised users to check Henrico County websites www.

co.henrico.va.us or www.henrico-alert.org, HCTV (Henrico County Television), Twitter accounts HenricoOEM and HenricoNews and NOAA Weather Radio for emergency information.

“We appreciate our subscribers’ patience as we make sure we have the most up-to-date technology to help keep them safe during an emergency,” she said.

The summer is half over, and yet Goochland area parents who want to enroll a child in a pro-gram at the Goochland Family YMCA still have lots of time.

While some programs run all summer, one week sessions are available, and the age range for participants is from 6-years old to 18.

“There’s always something going on,” said Programs Director Jan Kenney. “We have programs that are the same from year-to-year and we also add new pro-grams when we have a need.”

One of the new programs which was only for one week, and actually took place last month, was lacrosse camp.

“We had two area students come to us and suggest we need-ed to offer a camp because the sport is growing in popularity so fast,” she said. “They said they would coach the campers, and we were able to receive a very sub-stantial donation from Shannon

and Tommy Allen that allowed us to purchase the equipment needed. We had a clinic in the spring that attracted 54 children and had a one-week this summer. We’ll have another clinic in the fall, and if all continues to go well, we’ll have a full lacrosse program in 2012.”

The students who first approached Kenney about start-ing a lacrosse program at the Goochland Y were Jack Aldridge and Kyle Panas.

Camp Gooch is the anchor of most of the Goochland Y programs. It is for children from 6 -13. They participate in arts, crafts, sports, games, learning

activities, swimming and field trips. Kids are offered a summer of self-discovery, adventure, fun and learning. One week ses-sions are available for Camp Gooch, and the last session begins Aug. 15.

Kinder Camp, full and half day sessions, are available for pre-schoolers. The program offers swimming, socializing, learning new outdoor games, making crafts and exploring nature. The last session for this program also begins Aug. 15.

For questions concerning these and other programs at the Goochland Family YMCA, call 804-556-9887.

Manchester rising sophomore will take on LPGA Eagle Classic

By Vic Dorr Jr.Media General News Services

Some people measure growth with a ruler and a pen-cil and marks on a door frame. Lyberty Anderson soon will use a tool of a different sort: the 6,278-yard Richmond Country Club golf course.

Anderson, a 15-year-old who has won three consecu-tive Richmond Women’s Golf Association championships, has accepted an invitation to participate as an amateur in next month’s LPGA Futures Tour $100,000 Eagle Classic at RCC. Anderson participated in the event once previously. Well, sort of. She shot 84 in an 18-hole qualifying round as an 11-year-old in 2008.

“But that was before I really started to grow,” she said. “Now, I’m a little bigger and a little stronger. I’ve got some muscle now.

This should be fun. I haven’t

played (RCC) since 2008, so I’m very eager to see what hap-pens.”

She said she will enter the 54-hole event with modest expectations.

“I won’t go in with any wild and crazy goals,” she said. “I’d like to make the cut. I think that’s reasonable. I’m not going to look any farther. If more than (making the cut) happens — yea. That’s great. But I’ll worry about that if I get there.”

Tournament director/ Richmond Country Club pro-fessional Matthew Schulze said the tournament has long been eager to see Anderson in the 144-player field.

“I think we’ve all known since the day we started that one day Lyberty was going to play in this event,” Schulze said. “Now we’ve reached that point. To be quite honest, (extending a bid to the rising high school sophomore) wasn’t a difficult decision.”

Schulze said Anderson is an appealing addition not only because of her ability but also because of her visibility.

“She’s a homegrown 15-

year-old who has the skill to play with these girls,” he said. “She’ll help us. She’ll give people in Richmond another reason to come out and watch women’s golf.”

When set up in its Futures Tour configuration, RCC is roughly 1,100 yards longer than The Dominion Club course on which the 2011 RWGA tournament was held. Even so, Anderson said she is not concerned about her abil-ity to compete off the tee with professionals in their early to mid 20s.

“I don’t think (distance) is going to be that big of a deal,” she said. “Whenever I practice with my dad, we always play from the men’s tees. So it’s not like I’ve never played 6,200 yards before.”

Anderson didn’t qualify for the match-play portion of last week’s U.S. Junior Girls Championship at Olympia Fields near Chicago. She did, however, hit two memorable tee shots: a 4-iron to the cen-ter of the green on a 210-yard par-3 and a 310-yard drive that flew 270 yards before riding a

downslope for another 40.Anderson, who reached the

round of 16 in the recent VSGA Women’s Championship, con-ceded that “playing with pros might be a little intimidat-ing. But it should be exciting, too. I’m very thankful — I’m stoked, actually — to have this opportunity. I’m going to make every effort to enjoy it.

“Here’s how I see it: It’s going to be a great learning experience for me. I mean, who better to learn from (than a pro)? I’m going to try to absorb everything I can. They’re doing what I want to do someday. Where they are is where I want to be someday.”

The Eagle Classic will be held Aug. 12-14. Pro-ams will take place Aug. 10 (1 p.m.) and Aug. 11 (8:30 a.m.), followed by the three-day tournament.

Vic Dorr Jr. is a staff writ-er for the Richmond Times Dispatch.
