Sand-castle making is funBy Donna Erickson
Life IS a beach for "sandguy" andgrandfather Kirk Rademaker. As an inter-nationally acclaimed sand sculptor, he isknown for his innovative designs createdwith sand and water on exotic beaches ofthe world. In 1997, he quit his career incarpentry, traded in his construction bootsfor bare feet, and began a fulltime careerenjoying the enchantment of sand, surf andart.
"A beach filled with people is an equal-izer in a society that divides people," hesays. "When beachgoers of all ages andstations of life spontaneously join togetherto create a sandcastle, no one cares aboutyour title, name, rank or lack thereof."
On vacation in Santa Cruz, Calif., Iexperienced the freedom he talks about asI poked around in wet sand to my heart'scontent, sharing the moment with the new-found friends around me. I discovered thatcastle-making isn't just for kids with pint-size pails and scoops. All ages can reawak-en their inner artist and experience joy.
As Kirk guided a seaside crowd ofeager onlookers and myself through thebasics of sandcastle and sand sculpting, hedemonstrated his basic and doable tech-niques for getting started. (For step-by-stepphotos, see the "Sandguy Kirk RademakerSand Sculptures" photo album at myDONNA'S DAY Facebook fan page.)
When you head to a sandy beach at alake or the ocean, bring along the follow-ing along items, then let nature provide therest.
Here's the stuff:
•3 five-gallon plastic buckets (availableat hardware and building supply stores).Remove the base of one bucket so it lookslike a wide tube.
•Shovel for sand and water mixture.•Your favorite sand-sculpting tools,
such as a small trowel, butter knives, spoons and scoops.
Here's the fun:
1. Fill one of the buckets with sea orlake water and bring it to the "constructionsite."
2. Set the bucket with base removedfirmly into the sand upside down. Fill itabout two-thirds full with sand, then addwater to the top. Vigorously mix with yourhands. Tap the outside of the bucket; thevibrations cause the wet sand to settle andharden. Repeat with more sand and wateruntil the bucket is full and the sand feelsvery firm.
3. Tap the sides of the bucket again andgently lift it upward to reveal a large silo-like sand shape. Now you have the basicbuilding block for your castle, MountRushmore-esque sculpture or wackydesign. When you get going, just let itexpand with your imagination. The goal, according to Kirk, is that you don't wantthe sand shape to look like a five-gallonbucket any longer.

By Matilda CharlesThe young guy at my door said the
infamous words: "The offer is only goodfor today." And he wanted payment incash. That put me on alert. He was sellingdriveway resurfacing. Said he had enoughasphalt left to do only one job, and he'dgive me a good deal. I told him no.
There are some rules of thumb in thisexperience, when it comes to home main-tenance:
1. Beware those who come to the dooroffering services. Take their card, yes, andask for a price if you're interested, butdon't agree to any work either verbally orin writing.
2. If the work is something you're trulyinterested in having done, do it a differentway. Start by getting references fromfriends. Ask whether they're happy withthe job that was done, and whether anyissues were taken care of promptly. Getlegitimate bids from people you call, notthose who show up at the door.
3. Call the local Better Business Bureau
to check on any complaints.4. If your job involves skilled labor, just
as with electrical or plumbing, ask for acopy of the license and verify it with thestate agency.
5. Ask for a copy of the insurance cer-tificate and verify it with the company.
6. Don't sign a contract you don'tunderstand. Have a trusted adviser go overit with you. Refuse to be rushed.
7. Beware giving a large down pay-ment. If a supplier will be involved, callthem and ask for a reference.
8. Certain types of work require a per-mit. Verify with your local authorities.
Not all those who come to your doorare scammers, but the odds are increasedfor any type of business relationship thatyou don't initiate yourself.
Matilda Charles regrets that she cannotpersonally answer reader questions, but willincorporate them into her column wheneverpossible. Write to her in care of King FeaturesWeekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL32853-6475.

Parents should teach financial responsibility to kids
Communication is important when your teen is dating
By Tresa Erickson
"Mom, Dad, I need some money" isnot an uncommon plea among children, teens, and these days it seems, evenamong grown children. Many a child hasleft the nest, only to get into some finan-cial trouble and ask their parents for help. Some may have even moved back homewith Mom and Dad to save on expenses. While honoring an occasional monetaryrequest might be fine, honoring incessantrequests can create a vicious cycle thatcan be tough to break.
Frequently bailing out grown childrengenerally does more harm than good. Themore parents give, the more grown chil-dren take. As children become accus-tomed to the handouts, they save less andspend more. Parents inadvertently enabletheir children's bad habits and grow pro-gressively angry as they shell out theirhard-earned bucks to support more than
one family. Resentment builds among allparties involved. Children resent theirgrowing dependence upon their parents, while their parents and siblings resentthem for being so dependent.
It doesn't matter how much parentsmake; they should limit the help theyextend to children. Doing so is rarelyeasy, however. Parents have an innateneed to protect their children, no matterhow old they may be. When their kids arein trouble, their first instinct may be todole out the money. Before they do so,they need to take a step back and makecertain it is the right thing to do.
Parents must take a few days to thinkthrough the request and make sure theyare in a position financially to honor it.There is no point in clearing out savingsaccounts and going deep into debt to helpout a grown child. Parents don't want toput themselves in a precarious position orbe a burden later.
Even if parents have the money togive, they must make sure their childrenare really in need. What will the moneybe used for? To pay off debts? To go toschool? To buy a house? While all ofthese might enable children to becomemore self-sufficient, using the money togo on vacation or buy a new vehicle maynot. Parents must find out beforehand ifthe need is real.
Parents also need to make a long-termplan for repayment of the money. Yes, themoney should be considered a loan, not a
gift, and repaid to reduce the risk of fur-ther requests. Depending upon the situa-tion, this could be as simple as a monthlypayment, with or without interest. If thereis a lot on the line, parents may want toconsider getting a third party involved toset up the payment plan and secure thepayments. This will ensure there is nofudging on the terms of the loan.
Parents must perpetuate financialresponsibility in their children. After all, they won't be around forever to providefinancial support. Depending upon howmuch money their children need and whatthey intend to use it for, parents may ormay not fulfill their request. There is noshame in saying no, especially in caseswhere doing so would only enable chil-dren to continue making irresponsiblefinancial choices. Money should be givenwithout making enormous sacrifices andon the terms it will lead to change and berepaid.
Oh boy, the moment you've been dreading has finallycome. Your teen just asked you for permission to go on adate. Your first inkling might be to say no, but come on,they're going to have to start dating sometime, and sincethey are going as part of a group to a school dance, youhave less to worry about. You might as well take theplunge now and start laying the groundwork for what'sto come.
When you were a teen, the guys did the asking.Today, that's no longer the case. Girls are just as likely todo the asking, sometimes as early as age 12 or 13.Generally, at this age, dating occurs in a group setting, that is, a group of friends pair up and get together for anight at the movies or the bowling alley. This kind ofsetting alleviates the pressure of being one-on-one withsomeone and gives teens an opportunity to get to knoweach other. Unfortunately, it also sets the stage for peerpressure. Teens in a group setting are more likely to suc-cumb to peer pressure and do something they wouldn'totherwise do. Talking to your teen before they go outabout the social pressures they might face will helpensure they make the right decision should the situation
arise.Whether your teen chooses to go out as part of a
group or a pair, you need to set some ground rulesregarding where and when the date can take place.Public places are ideal, and depending upon the activityplanned, you may want to insist on adult supervision. Acouple of teens going to the movie theater might notpose as much risk as them going to a concert. In thatcase, you might want to escort your teen and their dateto the concert, sitting several rows away from them. Asfor time, you probably want to insist on a time frame forthe date when places are busier, say the early eveningrather than the late night. Go ahead and set a curfew toensure your teen is home at a reasonable time.
You might also want to learn a little something aboutyour teen's date, especially if you do not know them.Find out who their date is and where the two of themmet. Be wary of any meetings that took place online. Infact, you might want to monitor you teen's online activi-ty to ensure they are not accidentally putting themselvesin danger. Arrange to actually meet your teen's date, whether at the front door or inside the house. Although
first impressions can be deceiving, actually seeing theperson your teen is going out with may make you relax alittle.
Communication is important when teens are dating.Keep the channels open and be willing to discuss what-ever may come up, even if it's a subject you're not com-fortable with. Make sure your teen knows where youstand on important issues like drugs and alcohol and thatthey can call on you, day or night, in the event they getinto a situation they shouldn't.
Finally, be flexible. Yes, you should set good groundrules, but you should also be willing to change them asthe need arises. What works for your teen as a 13-year-old may not work for them later. You may have to be alittle more lenient as they mature and extend their curfewwith each passing year.
The key to maintaining a good relationship with yourteen when they are dating is communication. Talk withyour teen often and work with them to establish groundrules that suit them and you.

Cool drinksfor hot daysBy Angela Shelf Medearis
Baby, it's hot outside! The recent heatwave has increased the need to replenishyour body and avoid heat exhaustion.Sweating is the body's way of naturallycooling itself. Keep in mind that yourbody is actually losing fluids as you sweat,so it is important to replace them. Watermakes up about 60 percent of your body'sweight and is an important part of manybody processes. Besides helping to regu-late body temperature, water is present inevery cell in the body and helps protectsome body tissues. Water also helps totransport nutrients and aides with the elim-ination of bodily waste.
By the time you become thirsty, youmay have already lost 2 percent of yourbody fluids. Mild dehydration is when youhave lost 2 percent to 5 percent of yourbody fluids. Symptoms of mild dehydra-tion include thirst, dry mouth and throat, rapid pulse, low blood pressure, weaknessor a lack of energy, and reduced quantityof urine. When there is a fluid loss ofmore than 5 percent, the body has severereactions that include pale skin; bluish fin-gertips and lips; rapid, shallow breathing;weak, irregular pulse; and confusion ordisorientation. It can result in shock, seizures, coma and death.
A person who burns about 2,000 calo-ries should get about 8 to 12 cups of fluidper day. (Most women burn less than2,000 calories, while men working outsidewould burn more.) That might sound like alot to drink, but it doesn't all have to comefrom drinking water. Many of the foodswe eat contain a high percentage of water, and that counts as a portion of the 8 to 12cups of needed fluid. Hydrating foods suchas celery, cucumber, lettuce and summersquash are 90 percent to 95 percent water.Grapefruit, strawberries, broccoli andtomato are 90 percent to 94 percent water,
and milk, yogurt, egg whites, fruit juices, apples and carrots are 80 percent to 89percent water. Keep slices of watermelon, honeydew, cantaloupe and other suchwater-packed fruits in the refrigerator. They are excellent sources of water, sugarand electrolytes, and the perfect "grab andgo" refresher on a hot summer's day.
Just remember that if the weather is hotand you're sweating, that precious fluidneeds to be replaced. Next time you ven-ture out into the heat, don't forget to pack abottle full of this Fruity Sports Drink, ortake along a package of the HomemadePowdered Sports Drink to add to your bot-tle of water!
Fruity Sports DrinkUsing natural fruit juices adds both nat-
ural sugars and vitamins to your sportsdrink. Adding sea salt instead of table saltadds an electrolyte source, as the mineralsof the sea are very similar to the elec-trolyte composition in our blood. Sea saltcontains 84 minerals, including sodium, potassium, iodine, magnesium, calcium, zinc, manganese and helps to replenish theminerals you lose through perspiration.
1/2 can (3 ounces) frozen, unsweet-ened orange juice
2 tablespoons freshly squeezedlemon juice
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed limejuice
3/4 teaspoon sea salt2 quarts waterUsing a large pitcher, mix all of the
ingredients together until thoroughly com-bined. Refrigerate and stir to recombinebefore serving. Makes 2 quarts.
Homemade PowderedSports Drink
9 tablespoons organic or raw sugar3/8 teaspoon sea salt1 packet unsweetened powdered
fruit-drink mixMix together the sugar, salt and pow-
dered fruit drink until well-combined.Place 1/3 of the mixture into each of threesmall resealable bags.
To reconstitute, add the contents of 1bag to a 20-ounce sports bottle. Fill thebottle halfway with water, close and shake
to mix. Fill the rest of the bottle with waterand shake to mix again.
Alternately, add half the powdereddrink to a 20-ounce bottle of water.Replace cap and shake to mix. Add therest of the powdered drink, replace cap,and shake to mix. Makes 3 servings.

Despite the fact that the English language is verylarge in terms of the number of words available tothose who can use them, it seems that much of ourwriting is made up of only a few words. In a studyonce conducted by lexicographer G.H. McKnight, itwas found that approximately one-quarter of all thewords in any given sample of writing in English isone of the following nine: and, be, have, it, of, the, to,will and you.
Some species of squid can swim up to 35 mph.If you're an avid hiker, you might want to keep in
mind that the most dangerous trail in America, according to Backpacker magazine, is located in
Canyonlands National Park in Utah. The trail knownas The Maze earned this distinction thanks to numer-ous dead-end canyons, few sources of water and tem-peratures that soar to over 100 degrees F. in summer.

When the eggs of the Darwin frog hatch and thetadpoles emerge, the babies are swallowed by a malefrog. They're not victims of cannibalism, however; thefather keeps the tadpoles in his vocal sac for twomonths. Once they've matured and become tiny frogs, the young ones are coughed up and have to fend forthemselves.

By Tony RizzoHOLLYWOOD - We've received a ton of mail about "All My
Children" and Susan Lucci, and here's what we've learned. First,Lucci is 99 percent set to become a regular on "DesperateHousewives" when it returns Sept. 25 for its eighth season. "AllMy Children" exits ABC on Friday, Sept. 23. Lucci started on"All My Children" when it premiered on Jan. 5, 1970. Duringthe show's 41 years, she received 19 Emmy nominations, win-ning once. Can "AMC" survive the move without Erica Kane?
"All My Children's" departure leaves more questions thananswers. Is ABC trying to appease the soap's angry fan base bypassing it on to the unknown, unproven Prospect Park Onlinestarting Sept. 26 to get off the hook for canceling the show?ABC claims it cut "AMC" loose because it was too expensive toproduce. Can this new online network afford the productioncosts, or was jettisoning Lucci and her large salary part of a planto bring costs down?
Jack Nicholson will go before the cameras in the film"Americana," scheduled for a December 2012 release. Set in theConfederate south in l860, Nicholson will play a farmer andslave owner who flees to Brazil and finds a new love and a freshstart, only to be haunted by his past. Kate Winslet is said to behis leading lady.
And speaking of Kate, she has been nominated for an Emmyfor her starring role in "Mildred Pierce," the five-part mini-series reboot of the 1945 film that Joan Crawford won an Oscarfor. HBO's "Mildred Pierce" has netted a record 21 Emmy nom-inations, including one for Winslet as best actress in a mini-series. She has just completed the film version of the Broadwayhit "God of Carnage" with Oscar winners Jodie Foster andChristoph Waltz and "Chicago" Oscar nominee John C. Reilly. The film will have its first showing at the Venice Film Festivalin September. It was shot in Paris in February, with controver-sial award-winning director Roman Polanski at the helm.

By Samantha MazzottaThere are a couple of things you can
try to fix a slamming door. To slow downthe swinging, remove the pin from the tophinge of the door. Your son can be yourhelper by holding the door in place whileyou stand on a safe stepladder to take outthe pin.
Wrap the pin in clear tape - just onethin layer. Reinsert into the top hinge, andtest the door. If this doesn't slow downthe swing, wrap one more layer aroundthe pin. This should create enough fric-tion to stop the super-fast, free swing. You may need to reapply tape after sever-al months, however.
If the door banging shut is too loud, try using foam weather stripping to cush-ion the frame. Adhesive-backed foamstripping is available at home improve-ment stores in different widths. Try thethinnest width available.
Pre-test the stripping before gluing it
down. With the paper backing still on,unroll the strip along the inside of thedoor frame where the door closes againstit. Put a little clear tape at the top andbottom to hold it, and test the door. Doesit shut easily, or do you have difficultygetting it to latch with the strip in place?
If it's difficult, and you have thethinnest weather stripping available, tryplacing a small half-inch long piece at thetop and bottom of the door frame and testthe door again. This small amount ofstripping should muffle the noise some-what.
HOME TIP: Does your door stick orlightly scrape the floor when you open it?Tape a piece of sandpaper to the area andpush the door back and forth over it to tryand sand down the bottom of the door abit.
Send your questions or home tips [email protected].

E-mail etiquette for beginnersEveryone has heard about the e-mail
that was never meant to be sent-maybeincluding nasty words about a colleague,a hasty assessment of a new project or acrude joke. E-mail is still a relatively newform of communication, and developing asense of the etiquette for business e-mailscan help you communicate more effec-tively and efficiently. Because e-mail isbecoming such an important tool, bothwithin and between businesses, e-mailetiquette is one of the most importantskills to master.
E-mails can be very hard to interpret. There is no tone of voice or body lan-guage to convey the meaning underneath. As such, it is important to be very clear inyour e-mails. Writing clear subject linesis the first step. This will tell the recipienthow important the message is and willallow them to prioritize their time andresponses to you. It is also best if you cankeep your e-mails short. The more detailyou try and cram into a short e-mail, themore likely it is that your audience willbe confused. It is also possible that theywill not even read the entire e-mail if itappears too lengthy.
Don't use text-speak in your e-mail.For examples, text like "lol," "rotfl" and"u" (for you) are inappropriate in profes-sional e-mail. The standard rules of gram-mar, capitalization and punctuationshould apply, particularly when you aredealing with someone you don't knowwell. Think of e-mail as a cross betweena conversation and a formal letter. Itshould be more formal in tone and stylethan your everyday communications. Besure to address the e-mail and "sign" it ina formal tone, using "sincerely" or"respectfully" as a way to sign off. Onceyou've become more acquainted withsomeone, you can move to a simple namesignature or just "thanks."
Understand when it's appropriate to e-mail. There are times, like when you areconveying complicated issues or explain-ing a process, where e-mail is an ineffec-tive form of communication. Making aquick phone call or office visit might saveyou time, money and the stress of mis-communication in the long run.
Understand that e-mails are a perma-
nent record. Unlike conversations, oncesomething is down in print, it will alwaysbe there. E-mail messages have been usedin court cases for years now, and they areoften used in both promotions and disci-plinary hearings to demonstrate anemployee's position. Be sure you knowwhom you are sending the message to.Some systems default to a "reply all" fea-ture, which would not work for a privateconversation. Some systems will automat-ically reply to only the sender, meaningyour message might not reach the groupyou intend it to. It's a good rule of thumbto check the "to" field immediately beforesending the e-mail out.
E-mail is an increasingly importanttool in the business arsenal, and treating itas a formal piece of writing will keep youon track.
