19th Sunday in Ordinary Time

The St. Francis of Assisi community is a welcoming Christian family. We believe in Jesus Christ and are guided by the Holy Spirit and the example of St. Francis. We gather to celebrate, to grow in the knowledge of our faith rooted in the Catholic tradition, and to recognize our responsibility to reach out to the world.

Pastor’s Reflections

Dear Friends of St. Francis,

I hope you have noticed the recent work that has been done around our church and parish campus. The new air conditioning was installed – and it seems it has also been regulated well. A few weeks back you may have seen the roofers putting on the new church roof; if not, please note that we are now secure for many years to come. And these past two weeks, the parking lot has been/will continue to be sealed, making it look brand-spanking-new. This would not have been done without your continued generosity, the work of the finance council and the dedication of our own Fr. Art and Jim Hanh. I am sure you feel the same pride I do when at the parish! ************************************************************* This weekend’s Gospel is the awesome nature-miracle of Jesus walk-ing on the water. Note that it takes place in the midst of a huge storm that welled up. I brought a print of Charles Vickery’s “Jesus Walking on the Sea” for our art and environment. Charles Vickery was known for his seascapes, especially that of ships on the water. This particular picture used his expertise in painting water and waves, but also has a faith element to it. It is said that this piece of spiritual art has produced miracles, especially in places such as nursing homes. **************************************************************** Since Father Ed and I intend on preaching on the Gospel this weekend, I wanted to use the rest of this column to look at the first reading. We have Elijah who also encounters God in the elements. Sometimes this reading is used for retreats or to focus on prayer – the fact that we don’t need to look for huge signs (thunder, lightening, earthquakes) to find God, only to listen at times for gentle whispers. But I find that the background of this story is also very interesting. In some ways it follows last week’s Gospel account of the Transfiguration. If you recall, I mentioned in my letter the phrase, “You go up the moun-tain that you might come down the mountain.” Elijah was doing just that. He sought God’s assurance and strength to be able to go back down, and continue his mission as Prophet. Jezebel is a huge part of the story, though we do hear her mentioned this weekend. She is also found in the Book of Kings; she was as a queen, the wife of Ahab, King of Israel. In moving to Israel, she brought

along her own religion, the worship of Baal. She built pagan temples, and had her own priests and prophets. At one point, Elijah challenges the prophets of Baal to a contest. When Elijah wins the contest, he has all the prophets of Baal put to death. After Elijah has the prophets of Baal slain, Jezebel has the prophets of Isra-el killed, and threatened Elijah’s life in re-venge. He retreats to Mount Horeb to com-mune with God, as Moses had done before him (there are distinct parallels in the narra-tive—the forty days and the lodging in the cave). God does not allow Elijah to stay there. He nourishes him, and makes him return to do the work he was chosen to do. You go up the mountain that you might come down the mountain. Speaking about today’s Gospel passage three years ago the last time we were in the A Cycle, Pope Francis stated, “Here is an effective image of the Church: a boat which must brave the storms and sometimes seems on the point of capsizing. What saves her is not the skill and courage of her crew members, but faith which allows her to walk, even in the dark, amid hardships. Faith gives us the certainty of Jesus’ presence al-ways beside us, of his hand which grasps us to pull us back from danger. We are all on this boat, and we feel secure here despite our limitations and our weaknesses.” If the prophets of old (indeed one of the greatest of the Hebrew Scriptures, Elijah) and the Apostles of Jesus could be fearful, why should we not expect it? What helps us react to the storms that face us? How im-portant to take to our prayer the beginning of Psalm 24, “The earth is the LORD'S, and all it contains, The world; as well as those who dwell in it.”

Mission Trip Reflection by, Kevin Lyvers

Going on the Tennessee mission trip was one of the best things I have ever done. Hon-estly, I originally just signed up to earn the service hours. I was going to go, do what I was told to do, and rack up the service hours for my transcripts. However on the sec-ond day of camp during evening program, it became something different. Singing and having fun while worshipping at evening programs was amazing. It really made me feel good and made the whole experience less intimidating. We were all there together celebrating our faith and having fun doing it. I loved the messages they told us. They real-ly stuck with me. It’s hard to describe how much I loved evening programs, They really had a profound impact on me.

“God loves us, treats us with respect, and asks us to do the same with oth-ers … No one should ever be treated callously or carelessly— everyone should be cherished and protected!”

Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan, Chairman USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities 2016 Respect

Life Month Statement, https://goo.gl/sAeD1G.

My assignment was working with underprivi-leged youth at a sort of summer school. I helped eighth graders with English Math, Gym, Bible Class, and other classes. In English class we learned about haikus, and the kids’ haikus were pretty great. One of the kids wrote about cheesecake and it was awe-some. We also did vocab words and they would always use basketball to describe the words.

“Lebron's shot is SIMPLE” “Kobe is HUMBLE”

I loved how they used what they learned and connected it to what they know. In math there was a kid named Keshawn and he kept begging the teacher to give him some algebra problems so the teacher had me take him aside and teach him some tougher alge-bra. He picked it up very fast and we got through a lot in the four days. Bible class was amazing! The teacher was so enthusiastic and positive. She would always make the kids feel good . That made me feel good too. Art class was fun, we made origami and just talked the whole time. The kids were eager to share about themselves and I loved listening to their stories and getting to know about them as people.

They were an amazing group of kids and they worked hard to learn more. I am so glad to have had them touch my life. (Here is a picture of me and my students. They called me Coach Kev!)

Adult Faith Formation I’M GLAD YOU ASKED THAT QUESTION by, Sue Flanagan

I was recently told that I should keep my religion in the church. It should not influence politics. How should I respond to this? Our religion is not just something we do in a building on Sundays. Our Catholic faith is who we are as individuals and this comes with a social re-sponsibility.

It is our duty “to infuse the Christian spirit into the mentality and mores, laws, and structures of the com-munities in which we live.” “The social duty of Chris-tians is to respect and awaken in each man the love of the true and the good.” All people are bound to seek the truth. CCC 2104-2105

The church teaches that as far as possible citizens should take an active part in public life. In our coun-try, we have great freedom to do so. In fact, “it is the duty of citizens to work with civil authority for building up society in a spirit of truth, justice, soli-darity, and freedom. CCC 1915 & 2255 This is traditional Catholic teaching. However, speak-ing and acting according to truth with mercy and love is becoming increas-ingly more difficult in a culture that finds truth to be relative. Jesus sent us into the world as his disciples. He tells us to be courageous and that the Holy Spirit will teach us what to say. Lk 12:2-12 So, exercise your rights by engaging in good conversations, contact your elected officials with your opinion, and vote ac-cording to a well-informed conscience. Be a light to the world and salt of the earth. Mt 5:13-16 Want more? Lk 11: 33-36, Lk 12:49-53, Mt. 10:16-23 CCC2104-2109, 2244-2246 Questions? [email protected]

AROUND FOR AWHILE By, Fr. Ed Upton

I want to continue in the Paul Harvey mode with “the rest of the story”. The most prominent fea-ture of our church is the brick. At one time, I knew the number of bricks used, but that piece of data has long faded. Because the brickwork was so extensive, the building committee want-ed to be careful in selec-tion. I think we were suc-cessful. In the hallway, beyond the narthex, you will see the Silver Award present-ed to the masonry con-tractor by the Masonry Council of Illinois/Indiana Institute for outstanding work. Selection was a chal-lenge. The architects brought samples of brick, small samples, to our meetings. We liked a few, but wanted to know the buildings that used them so we could see them on site. Because of the extent of brick work, appearance was im-portant and could not be determined from small samples. Obtaining this information was more difficult than we anticipated. The brick manufacturer sells bricks to a masonry contractor who has a contract with a general contractor. Also, it can be a number of years

between orders for a spe-cific brick. So the name of the intended user is not readily available. Twenty years ago computerized records were not common. So locating the exact building was not easy. As I share this story, my memory no longer has the precise details, but you will get the point. We were provided the location of a building, by the architect, in China Town, that they thought used the bricks we liked. We visited that site but were uneasy because the bricks did not seem to match the sample. Shortly after our excursion, they informed us they were giv-en incorrect information so that had given us incorrect information. Finally, we learned the building that was con-structed by the bricks of our sample. It was the Em-bassy Suites on State Street in Chicago. We made the trip. I remem-ber it was a very sunny afternoon; the sun was powerful on the building. The sunlight showed the extent of orange in the brick – a hue that was not seen on samples, at night, in ordinary light. Looking at this brick and imagining it on our church – I was afraid we would be accused of building the great pumpkin.

From my perspective, this was the most worthwhile trip I and some members of the committee made during construction: we avoided a giant orange structure!! Fortunately, we were given another sample – this time the building was in Elk Grove Village. We were happy with the appearance of this brick and sought assurance (a guarantee) from the architect that this building was indeed a match of the sample. It is necessary to give suffi-cient time to manufacture brick, so that when the contractor is ready to do masonry work the bricks are available. In this plan-ning, the contactor had been in communication with the “orange brick” sales person and they were making plans for our acceptance of his brick and an order. I felt sorry for the sales-man, he lost a big order. For days, he was calling asking me to change my mind – but the image of the great pumpkin on our prop-erty gave me resolve. Check out the Embassy Suites!

Join fellow parishioners on Saturday, September 16th as we walk to aid the Albertine Sisters who staff the St. Blase Food Panty. Each month the Sisters serve 450 families through their food pantry and an additional 500 families each WEEK that come to their donation table. The Sisters will receive credit at the Greater Chi-cago Food Depository for each person that walks on their behalf. This cred-it will go a long way to supply food for their vari-ous programs. In order for the Sisters to receive credit, we must indicate that we are walking on behalf of Team St. Blase. Stop by the parish of-fice to sign a simple waiver and we will make sure you are reg-istered correctly. We only need your name and email address. Transportation will be provided. The Hunger walk takes place in Jack-son Park and we will walk along the lake front. Buses leave from St. Francis promptly at 7:00 AM and will return at ap-proximately 12:30 PM. Registration ends Au-gust 28th. This costs you nothing. Simply by taking a walk along beautiful Lake Michigan, you can make a difference in the lives of so many.

Reflection on Scripture

Study by, Betty Kameron

Having participated in the Jeff Cavins Bible Timeline last Fall and Spring increased my understanding of the Old Testament a hundredfold. Each session opened up Old Testament readings in ways that were easy to under-stand and offered new insights into the story of the Jewish journey toward salva-tion and their relation-ship with God. I now know the “back story” of the Scripture pas-sage being pro-claimed at Sunday Mass. Kindly consider join-ing this new Jeff Cavins presentation on the Gospel of Mat-thew. You will not be sorry! Tuesday morning sessions are at 8:30 a.m. and begin on September 12, 2017. Wednesday evening sessions are at 7:00 p.m. and begin on September 13, 2017. Sessions are held at the Saint Francis Center and are open to parishioners, friends and relatives who would be inter-ested in joining this very worthwhile pro-gram. Registration begins this weekend!

This exciting study brings the Gospel to life and draws you closer to Christ. You will see Jesus as the awaited Messiah who fulfills the promises and prophecies of the Old Testa-ment, establishes the New Law, and inaugurates the Kingdom of Heaven. Set in the rich con-text of Jesus’ life, Matthew shows us who Jesus is and what his life and teachings mean for us today. “Once you start learning he makes you hunger for more. Jeff pulls everything you need to know out of the Bible and it all starts to make sense like it never

did before.”

SUMMER Ordinary Time

2017 Notes of Interest

Last week, 21 singers from the Saint Francis Children’s Choir and Youth Sing-ers travelled with their families to perform at Disney Springs, in Disney World., Orlando Fla. Not only did the children perform a dynamic 30 minute concert at Disney Springs, they had the most wonderful week of fun and excitement. Part of their experience included a vocal /dance workshop in “Studio B” of Backstage Epcot, with Disney performance personnel and tech crew. It was truly a bonding time for the children and families who went. After numerous weekly fundraises and 3-4 rehearsals per week for 6 weeks, our kids truly sang their hearts out. I would like to personally recognize and thank the families who gave so much time and energy to help get this trip off the ground. I would especially like to thank Anne Hayes, Luke Stewart, Debbie & Randy Alvarado, Ania & Michal Szaflarski, Lora Martarano, Bill Rzeszutko, Jacob Jarzabek, Katie Hayes, Matt Malachuk, Rachel Stoterau, who were the ‘team I relied on in ways too numer-ous to count.

My deepest appreciation to these wonderful families of our parish and Music Ministry Program:

The Alvarado family, the Bieszke family, the Carroll family, the Cueller-Reiland family, the Dwyer family, the Hooks family, the Leach family, the Malysz family, the Santiago family, the Shastri family, the Szaflarski family, the Tedera family, the Turk family. Jordyn Catherine Shaw Child of Ryan & Jessica (Cuttone) Shaw

We joyfully welcomed the following child

into our Christian Community:

NOTHING TO FEAR

A rabbi was asked why God sends trials and troubles into human lives. "Because God gets lonely for his peo-ple" was the reply. There is some resonance with this wisdom in today's Gospel, as Jesus makes his disciples get into a boat without him and goes off alone while they venture into stormy waters. Of course, neither Jews nor Christians believe that the Almighty plays this sort of whimsical game with them, but there is some truth in the statement that we don't turn to God for sav-ing help until we're in a bind. Peter's role today, as it is throughout the New Testament, is to be a sign or to represent each member of the church and the whole church. Our story is the tale told about Peter's faith to-day. What can bolster our faith is that even when Christ calls us to face bravely the tempests of life, if we are walking through them with our eyes fixed on him in faith, we have nothing to fear. Even when we falter or sink, simply crying "Lord, save me!" is enough to help us know the steady grasp of God's hand. Then, shel-tered inside the walls of faith, the storms we endure lose their power over us.
