As the children of parents who illegally immigrated into the United States in 1999, most of the time those gambles — such as searching for work — come with negative connotations and always the chance of deportation. “It’s really tough; you get frustrated because all we want is the chance to get out of the shadows, to become someone,” said Oscar, 20, a freshman. “We’ve talked about going back, but Mexico is a place we don’t know, and we feel like, ‘We grew up here, we belong here.’” And so, when the brothers heard about Metropolitan State University of Denver and its newly established tuition rate for undocumented immigrant students, they decided to take another risk: They wanted to show that they indeed belong. “I’m 26 years old. I should have my degree. I should have my career,” said Juan, a sophomore in mechanical engineering. His brother Hugo, 24, is a sophomore in psychology. “But I couldn’t pay tuition, I couldn’t get loans, there was no way I could afford college,” Juan said. “But this, I’m pretty sure it’s going to change my life.” There are about 240 students on campus harboring similar hopes, according to MSU Denver officials. Students attending Metro under its Colorado nonresident tuition rate pay $3,358 per semester — more than in-state students but less than the out- of-state rate previously charged. The current out-of-state tuition is $8,511.06. To take advantage of the lower rate students must meet a set of criteria that includes being a state resident for at least three years, having a degree from a Colorado high school or a GED and being in good legal standing other than their immigration status. In addition, the students must sign a notarized affidavit affirming that they have either filed an application to legalize their status and/or applied for deferred action under a recent executive order by President Barack Obama, or will do so as soon as they become eligible. Under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival, as of Aug. 15, people who are under age 31 and who were brought into the country illegally by their parents before age 16 can apply to defer deportation for two years. They may also be eligible for work permits. Opposition Not long after Metro announced the new tuition rate, questions about its legitimacy were raised. Colorado Attorney General John Suthers issued an opinion that the plan violated state law, and former U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo threatened to file a lawsuit against the school. WASHINGTON — El duo demócrata compuesto por el presidente Barack Obama y el vicepresidente Joe Biden lidera por 35 puntos a sus rivales republicanos Mitt Romney y Paul Ryan en la intención de voto entre los hispanos inscritos para votar, según un sondeo nacional.
La encuesta entre 300 hispanos encargada por NBC News, The Wall Street Journal y Telemundo, otorgó a los aspirantes a la reelección una intención de voto entre los hispanos de 63% frente a 28% obtenido por Romney-Ryan.

A University of Colorado analysis that relies on economic data predicts
Republican candidate Mitt Romney will win the presidency, picking up Colorado and all but three of 13 swing states.
The research paper raised eyebrows with one Colorado pollster, as well as a nationally known political statistician, who questioned the data.
The analysis, done by CU political scientists Ken Bickers and Michael Berry, uses unemployment data and changes in personal income in states to conclude that Romney has a 77 percent chance of victory, with the presumptive republican nominee winning Colorado with 51.8 percent of the vote.
“Putting these pieces together, clearly President (Barack) Obama is in electoral trouble,” the analysis argues, saying hat while the Democrat has the incumbency advantage, the “fragile economy” hurts him.
“For a Democrat running for re-election, when unemployment starts going above 5.6 percent, they’re in trouble,” Bickers said, “but that’s contingent on a given state’s voting history.”
The national unemployment rate is at 8.3 percent, which mirrors the rate in Colorado. Meanwhile, Colorado’s per capita personal income has dropped by half a percentage point since the fourth quarter of 2008, when Obama was elected, Bickers said.
“We’re a state where there is a fair amount of economic distress which has
shown up in a lot of other ways: the mortgage foreclosure issue, the lack of homebuilding,” Bickers said. “The big drivers of that is how much money do people have in their pockets to buy things and how secure do they feel in terms of their employment situation.”
The analysis asserts Romney will win every one of 13 swing states except Nevada, New Mexico and Michigan.
The researchers also assert that their economic-based model, which they developed after the 2008 election, would have correctly predicted the outcome of
every presidential race since 1980.According to the analysis, which
Bickers said the pair would update in September when new economic data arrives, Obama will only garner 218 electoral votes, well less than the 270 needed to win.
That prediction is well below the 286.3 electoral votes Obama is forecast to win by FiveThirtyEight.com, a political statistics blog for The New York Times run by Nate Silver.
The statistician, fi rst known for his analyses of baseball statistics, gained
national notice during the 2008 election when he began writing about politics.
Silver’s analysis, which relies on multiple sets of polling data in states, gives Obama a 66 percent chance of winning the election, a number that has fallen over the summer but which still shows the election is Obama’s to lose. Silver’s blog also says Obama has a 51.8 percent chance of winning Colorado.
Asked about the CU analysis, Silver dismissed research based solely on economic factors.
“Models that look at both polls and economic data have generally done reasonably well,” Silver said. “But models like this one that try to make predictions based on economic data alone have a poor track record.”
He also said it was “odd” to argue unemployment rates would hurt Democratic incumbents more than Republicans.
“That doesn’t correspond to most of the other literature on the topic, which suggests that voters are responsive to economic conditions regardless of which party is in charge,” Silver said.
Bickers, though, argued that analysts like Silver rely too much on “horse race” polls.
“They’re not terribly predictive until after the two nominating conventions,” he said.
Republicans hold their national convention in Tampa, Fla., next week while the Democratic National Convention kicks off in Charlotte, N.C., the following week.

Denver pollster Floyd Ciruli also questioned relying on economic factors, saying that after the most recent recession, Americans “may have recalibrated at a higher new normal” for unemployment.

Local farmers are being forced to scale back on
their harvests this year, caused in large part by a shortage of irrigation water.
The hot and dry conditions this summer have cut significantly into production levels at several fields in Adams County, which is home to nearly 500,000 acres of farmland.
Some farmers say this year’s drought is among the worst they’ve seen.
“We’re really struggling,” said Debbie Palizzi, owner of Palizzi Farm, at 15380 E. 152nd Ave., in Brighton. “It’s been a hard year because of the water issue. “It’s just been the worst, one of the worst years that I’ve seen in a while.”
The drought has forced the 65-acre farm to “pick and choose” which crops get watered this year, Palizzi said.
As a result, many items had to be sacrificed, including everything from green beans and pickles to cabbage and lettuce.
“The bottom line for us is that our income will be much less this year,” Palizzi said. “It’s been very disappointing.”
Several other farmers in the area say they are facing similar conditions, including Petrocco Farms at 14110 Brighton Rd.
Owner David Petrocco said he’s already worried about the possibility of an even worse harvest next summer.
“I’m very concerned,” Petrocco said.
Berry Patch Farms, at 13785 Potomac St. in Brighton, has also been hard hit, said owner Tim Ferrell.
Lighter yields have been a common theme at the pick-your-own-produce farm this year, particularly raspberries and strawberries.
Customers are occasionally turned away because the fields are completely picked out for the day by noon, he said.
“We’re just trying to manage it as best we can,” Ferrell said. “But we’re doing OK. We’re not in dire straits. Most everybody understands the situation, that yes, we are in a drought.”
This summer has seen some of the hottest and driest conditions on record across the state, which prompted U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to declare a “crop disaster” in 62 of the 64 counties in Colorado, including Adams County.
As a result, farmers and ranchers in those counties will be eligible to receive emergency federal loans to help regain some of their losses.
On a statewide level, officials say the drought has significantly hit Colorado’s livestock and corn industries.
The most recent reports show that approximately 62 percent of the state’s corn is rated as poor or very poor, said Ron Carleton, deputy

“The corn crop has been not very good at all and that has also driven prices up,” Carleton said.
He said it’s been a “miserable summer” for both ranchers and farmers this year.
“Even though we had some spot rains in July, it still didn’t help much,” Carleton said. “We still needed more and so far, we’re just not getting it this summer.”

Más de 50 de los mejores restaurantes de Colorado se
preparan para exhibir sus invenciones culinarias en el 29avo festival A Taste of Colorado, organizado por el Downtown Denver Partnership.
Patty Johnson, directora de marketing de A Taste of Colorado, dijo que el evento le da la oportunidad a las personas de probar un poco del “sabor” de la comida, la música y la cultura del estado. El festival exhibirá la mezcla de culturas y sabores de Colorado durante el fin de semana de Labor Day.

Sin embargo Aguirre sintió curiosidad por el otro evento y luego decidió que seria el perfecto lugar para dar a conocer su especialidad – los chiles rellenos.
Desde entonces Aguirre ha participado en el festival todos los años vendiendo burritos de desayuno, cactuses y pollo y carne desmechada.
Este año Aguirre tiene dos kioscos de donde los cuales venderá sus platos a miles de personas.
“Me encanta cocinar para las personas,” ella dijo. “A Taste of Colorado es un evento hermoso.”
Para aquellos que buscan disfrutar de algo de música, el entretenimiento será proveído por una variedad de músicos y grupos de danza.
Jeanette Trujillo-Lucero, fundadora y directora de la Fiesta Colorado Dance Company, dijo que su grupo presentara bailes típicos de Méjico, España y la adaptación de “El Cuento de Ferdinando” – la historia de un toro que no le gustaban las corridas.

More than 50 of Colorado’s favorite food establishments are gearing
up to show off their dishes at the 29th annual A Taste of Colorado organized by the Downtown Denver Partnership.
Patty Johnson, marketing director for A Taste of Colorado, said the event gives people a “taste” of the state’s music, food and culture. The four-day festival will bring Colorado’s mix of cultures and flavors during Labor Day weekend.
“I think everyone should come and experience taste of Colorado,” Johnson said. “The ultimate experience is to walk around, get some food, and then sit with your family and listen to some live music.”
The festival which began in 1983 has roots in an 1800s celebration known as The Festival of Mountain and Plain, Johnson said.
Johnson said the original festival was a way to boost the city’s morale after the silver crash.
Today, A Taste of Colorado serves as a Mecca for food and entertainment.
Rosa Linda Aguirre, owner of Rosa Linda’s Mexican Cafe, said she learned about the festival 27 years ago when she
was selling food at the Denver’s Veterans Day Parade and someone tried to buy burritos with a voucher.
“People were coming up to me and asking me if they could get a burrito with this ticket and I am like ‘no I need cash,’” she said.
Aguirre’s interest was sparked and she decided the festival would be a perfect place to showcase her signature
dish – chiles rellenos. Since then, Aguirre has participated in
the festival every year selling breakfast burritos, cactuses and shredded beef and chicken.
This year Aguirre also plans to serve thousands of her delicacies out of two booths at the event.

“We have great Hispanic roots here in Denver,” Trujillo-Lucero said. “When you get to see these performances you will see the hard work through the generations who are preserving the cultural roots.”
Johnson said they expect more than 500,000 visitors.

u Explosión de refinería pone en cuestión su seguridad
PUNTO FIJO, Venezuela — Para poder determinar las causas de la explosión en la refinería de Amuay, una de las más grandes del mundo ubicada en el occidente venezolano, se deberá esperar a que se extinga el fuego, explicaron las autoridades.
Según los funcionarios, la explosión ocurrida en las primeras horas del sábado dejo más de 50 muertos y decenas de heridos. Los residentes en un barrio próximo a la refinería dijeron que no tuvieron ninguna advertencia antes de la explosión.
La fiscal general Luisa Ortega Díaz, indicó el lunes que "todavía no contamos con elementos para determinar las causas del accidente, hay que esperar". Díaz indicó que un equipo especial del Ministerio Público estará a cargo de la investigación de los hechos.
En la última década se han registrado numerosos accidentes y fallas en el Complejo Refinador de Paraguaná, integrado por las refinerías de Amuay y la adyacente Cardón que en conjunto componen uno de los sistemas refinadores más grandes del mundo.

Refinery explosion raises safety concerns
PUNTO FIJO, Venezuela — The fire will have to be extinguished before being able to determine the cause of the explosion at the Amuay refinery, one of the largest in the world and located in the west of Venezuela, authorities said.
According to government officials, the explosion which started early Saturday morning has left more than 50 dead and about 150 injured. Residents in a neighborhood next to the refinery say they had no warning before the explosion hit.
Prosecutor General Luisa Ortega said they “still don't have facts to
determine the causes of the accident." Diaz also said a special team from the Public Ministry will be in charge of the investigation with the help of police, armed forces and experts.
Amuay is among the world's largest refineries and is part of the Paraguana Refining Center, which also includes the adjacent Cardon refinery. In the past decade numerous accidents have been reported in this center.
On Sunday President Hugo Chavez said more evidence is still needed before saying the cause of the explosion was lack of proper maintenance.
Critics and experts in the petroleum industry assure Venezuelan refineries are known for a lack of timely upkeep. Others assure the safety issues worsened as a direct consequence of the government’s massive layoff from the state-owned Petroleos de Venezuela SA (PDVSA).
u Strong earthquake hits off El Salvador coast
SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador — A strong magnitude-7.3 earthquake struck off the coast of El Salvador followed an hour later by a magnitude-5.4 aftershock, authorities said early Monday. There were no immediate reports of damages or injuries.
The quake was located 86 miles (138 kilometers) south-southwest of San Miguel, the U.S. Geological Survey reported on its web site. The temblor took place at a depth of 32.9 miles (53 kilometers). The second quake registered about an hour later in the same area at a depth of 35.9 miles (57.8 km).
Alfonso Lara, a technician with El Salvador's Civil Protection agency said authorities were alerted to the threat of a tsunami. "We are doing a general monitoring of the entire coast through our technicians and representatives," he said.

u Apple lists 8 Samsung products it wants banned
SAN FRANCISCO — Apple Inc. on Monday gave a federal judge a list of eight Samsung Electronics Co. products it wants pulled from shelves and banned from the U.S. market, including popular Galaxy model smartphones.
U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh asked for the list after a jury in San Jose last week slammed Samsung with a $1.05 billion verdict, finding that the South Korean technology giant had "willfully" copied Apple's iPhone and iPad in creating and marketing the products. Samsung plans an appeal.
The products Apple wants out are all smartphones: Galaxy S 4G, Galaxy S2 AT&T, Galaxy S2, Galaxy S2 T-Mobile, Galaxy S2 Epic 4G, Galaxy S Showcase, Droid Charge and Galaxy Prevail.
Samsung says it will appeal the verdict to higher courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court.
In addition to the sales bans, Apple also plans to ask the judge to triple the damages to $3.15 billion because of the jury's finding that Samsung "willfully" copied Apple.

Metro believed its argument was buttressed by the federal deferred action program, saying it mitigated the rationale of opponents who said Metro — and other universities that have similar plans — were providing the chance at college degrees to people who couldn’t legally work afterward.
However, one local member of that opposition, state Sen. Kent Lambert, R-Colorado Springs, says any potential shelter provided by the deferred action could prove to be temporary.
“There’s no legs to support what President Obama is doing,” said Lambert, a Joint Budget Committee member. “We’re not far from an election, and if the law gets enforced again, these people, who are providing names and addresses, what’s to prevent them from getting deported?
“The political pendulum will swing back,” he said. “It’s just very arrogant and ill-advised of Metro State to be doing this, going ahead and illegally implementing this rate. The governor should dismiss the entire board of trustees and start over.”

Para muchos jóvenes y estudiantes indocumentados
el pasado 15 de agosto marcó el inicio a la posibilidad de beneficiarse de la política de acción diferida, que les podría permitir permanecer y obtener un permiso de trabajo en Estados Unidos hasta por dos años.
De acuerdo a las cifras del Migration Policy Institute en Colorado cerca de 40 mil jóvenes y estudiantes indocumentados se podrían beneficiar de esta política, la cual podría alcanzar a cerca de 1,76 millones de personas en todo Estados Unidos.
Recientemente el Servicio de Ciudadanía y Servicios Migratorios de Estados Unidos (USCIS, por sus siglas en inglés) actualizó los lineamientos que deberán cumplir aquellos jóvenes y estudiantes interesados en solicitar la acción diferida quedando de la siguiente manera:
Tener menos de 31 años al 15 de junio de 2012.
Llegó a los Estados Unidos antes de los 16 años de edad.
Ha residido continuamente en los Estados Unidos por un período mínimo de cinco años antes del 15 de junio de 2012.
Estuvo presente en Estados Unidos el 15 de junio de 2012 y al momento de aplicar al proceso acción diferida.
Entró sin inspección a Estados Unidos antes del 15 de junio de 2012 o su estatus legal de inmigración expiró al 15 de junio de 2012.
Está asistiendo a la escuela, se ha graduado de la escuela superior, posee un Certificado de Educación General (GED, por sus siglas en inglés), o ha servido honorablemente en la Guardia Costera o en las Fuerzas Armadas de los Estados Unidos
No ha sido encontrado culpable de un delito grave, delito menos grave de carácter significativo, múltiples delitos menos graves, o representa una amenaza a la seguridad nacional o a la seguridad pública.
Aquellas personas que consideren haber cumplido con estos requisitos es importante que conozcan los formularios así como el procedimiento de aplicación establecido por USCIS. Toda la información relacionada al proceso de acción diferida puede consultarse en la página uscis.gov/childhoodarrivals.
Los expedientes conformados por formularios y documentos de prueba deberán ser enviados al USCIS vía correo postal junto con el pago de $465 por trámite, el cual puede ser realizado en cheque u orden de pago. Recommendations for Deferred Action applications
For many young undocumented students Aug. 15 marked the beginning of a new opportunity. This was the day they could start applying for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals – a program that would allow them to avoid deportation and get a work permit for up to two years.
According to the Migration Policy Institute, about 40,000 undocumented youths and students could benefit form this program in Colorado. The amount of those benefitted nationwide could reach up to 1.76 million.
Recently the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) updated the requirements applicants for deferred action will have to meet:
Be under the age of 31 by June 15, 2012.
Entered the U.S. before their 16th birthday.
Must have lived in the U.S. for at least 5 years before June 15, 2012.
Were physically present in the United States on June 15, 2012, and at the time of making your request for consideration of deferred action.
Entered the country without inspection before June 15, 2012, or your lawful immigration status expired as of June 15, 2012.
Is currently attending school, has already graduated high school or have obtained a general education development (GED) certificate, or are an honorably discharged veteran of the Coast Guard or Armed Forces of the United States; and have not been convicted of a felony, significant misdemeanor, three or more other misdemeanors, and do not otherwise pose a threat to national security or public safety.
It is important that those who believe they meet the requirements get well familiarized with the application documents and process established by USCIS. All the necessary information concerning the deferred action process can be found at uscis.gov/childhoodarrivals.
Once all the documents and evidence have been filled out and compiled they should be sent to USCIS via mail along with an application fee of $465. The payment can be done through either money order or by check. The addresses where applications should be sent can be found at the USCIS webpage outlined above.
It is very important that applicants present authentic documents and truthful information. In the given case that an anomaly is found, the application could be denied and there may not be another opportunity to reapply.
We recommend that applicants seek legal advice while filling out the application and while compiling the necessary documents needed as evidence.
The Mexican Consulate in Denver can offer information on lawyers with expertise on immigration law. Informative sessions will be held in the following weeks to help with the application process. A layer of dramaThis week on the Auraria

Most people I know eat ceviche at restaurants or on tropical vacations. But it is one of those dishes that, like sushi, folks shy away from making at home. I think that is because it generally is made with raw seafood, which necessitates having really, really fresh fish.
Fear the raw no more! With my cooked version of ceviche — using shellfish you buy already cooked — you can make ceviche anywhere, anytime.
Feeling more adventurous? You also could add or substitute baby squid, scallops, rock shrimp, or even lobster.
While the shellfish marinates, I mince fresh habanero and serrano chilies to add the traditional “bite” to the dish. I also chop ripe red grape tomatoes and creamy avocado. I also like adding chunks of mango or even fresh passion fruit to add a sweet-tart fruitiness to the tangy tomatillo-lime mixture. These ingredients are best tossed into the seafood just before serving.
If you are planning to save some leftovers for the next day, reserve the seafood and add the flavoring ingredients just before serving the second time. The tomatoes, avocados and any fruit will get mushy

Cuando le pregunte si comía a sus horas, me dijo que realmente tiene un horario muy irregular para las comidas, come una vez en la mañana y no vuelve a comer hasta la noche.
Aquí le doy varios consejos generales para mejorar la dieta y no se olvide de tener una evaluación medica si sufre de malestares estomacales para
revisar su causa y tener su tratamiento, antes de que se convierta en un problema mayor.
1) Intente comer comidas pequeñas mas frecuente. Pueda que le ayude comer cada tres a cinco horas como mínimo o hasta tres comidas al día. Lo mejor es no esperar muchas horas para comer entre comidas porque si sufre de la acidez estomacal va a empezar a causarle dolor.
2) Intente comer una variedad de alimentos en porciones pequeñas, evitando comer en exceso.
3) La recomendación de la dieta depende para cada persona pero no es necesario seguir una lista estricta de qué alimentos comer y no comer cuando se sufre de ulceras. Los alimentos que no se pueden tolerar, varia de persona a persona. Ahora si el chile le causa malestar entonces añádalo a su propia lista. Pero si no se come a sus horas regulares entonces la lista de alimentos continuará alargándose.
4) Mantenga un diario de los alimentos que le causan síntomas y escriba detalles específicos. Por ejemplo si los frijoles le hacen daño, escriba si son de la olla, refritos, hechos en casa o enlatados. Todo esto le puede ayudar a determinar por si mismo su lista de alimentos.
5) Evite los alimentos altos en grasa, sal y azúcar. Esto le ayudará para la salud en general. Las salsas con mucha grasa puedan que le hagan daño.
6) Por último, evite el alcohol y fumar porque esto le seguirá haciendo más daño.

While you can use frozen cooked shrimp for this recipe, freshly steamed are best. The easy way to do this is to buy the shrimp raw, then ask the staff at the grocer’s seafood counter to steam them for you. Most grocers offer this service for free.

Start to finish: 45 minutesServings: 6Ingredients: 1/2 cup lime juice3 to 4 large fresh tomatillos, husks removed, washed1 loosely packed cup fresh cilantro leaves1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more to taste1 1/2 pounds cooked large shrimp, shells and tails removed1/2 pound of lump crabmeat, picked over for any shells1 to 2 teaspoons minced serrano pepper1 to 2 teaspoons minced habanero pepper1 cup grape tomatoes, quartered1 large avocado, peeled, pitted

For outdoor junkies and newbies alike, The North Face and REI are bringing an event to persuade Denverites to get out more.
The two outdoor retailers in partnership with Backpacker magazine will be bringing Adventures Denver, an event that will teach attendees how to participate more in outdoor activities and sports.
Jonathan Dorn, editor-in-chief of Backpacker said there are endless benefi ts to engaging in outdoor activities, even beyond health and fi tness.
“Coming from where I come, where I have been hiking and canoeing all my life, I see all the benefi ts of it like deepening
relationships with family and friends because of the relaxation it brings,” he said.
The event, which will be held at Sloan’s Lake Park, will be the fi rst of its kind in Denver. For the past eight years Backpacker magazine has hosted Adventures in New York City bringing in around 35,000 visitors this past June, Dorn said.
Dorn said he only expects about 5,000 attendees for the Denver event.

The event will also have rock climbing walls, stand-up paddle, kayaking, mountain biking, and slack-lining, Dorn said.
“It doesn’t take a lot of money, and it doesn’t take a lot of time and you don’t need all these special skills,” to get into hiking, climbing or kayaking, Dorn said.
According to a study by the Outdoor Foundation in 2011 outdoor recreation had the highest participation level in fi ve years – a total of 141.1 million Americans.

Hispanic Americans are one of the groups with the lowest participation rates only behind African Americans. Despite the low participation rates Latinos who do engage in outdoor activities tend to do it more often.
North Face Ambassador Juan Martinez, who grew up in concrete-fi lled South Central Los Angeles, said he believes there is a great opportunity for the Latino community to embrace the outdoors.
“I found that by connecting to the outdoors it really became more than about who I was, but what I could do for my community,” Martinez said.
At the event, Martinez will be offering clinics on different activities and talking about the importance of incorporating the outdoors into communities.
“It is not so much that the Latino doesn’t have an urge to be in the outdoors, but it is more about building a culturally relevant space,” he said. “A space where people feel empowered to take ownership of those places.”

Para los amantes del aire libre y los que recién ahora comienzan a disfrutarlo, The North Face y
REI han organizado un evento para persuadir a los residentes de Denver que salgan más al aire libre.
Las dos tiendas de deporte se asociaron con la revista Backpacker para traer Adventures Denver, un evento que les ayuda a los participantes a disfrutar de actividades y deportes al aire libre.
Jonathan Dorn, editor en jefe de la revista, indicó que existen innumerables benefi cios de realizar actividades al aire libre, además de salud y buen estado físico.
“Por provenir de donde provengo, he practicado montañismo toda mi vida. Conozco los benefi cios de este tipo de actividades, como profundizar las relaciones con familiares y amigos debido a la relajación que se experimenta”, comentó.
Adventures Denver, que se realizará en el Sloan’s Lake Park, es el primero de su clase en Denver, aunque Backpacker ya ha realizado eventos similares en New York los últimos ocho años. En junio pasado, hubo alrededor de 35.000 participantes, dijo Dorn.
Dorn dijó que para el evento en Denver espera alrededor de 5.000 participantes.
Brook Hopper, gerente de exploraciones al aire libre y relaciones comunitarias de North Face, dijo que las actividades al aire libre ayudan a que las personas se sientan más cercanos al medio ambiente.

Según un estudio realizado por la Outdoor Foundation en el 2011, más de 141 millones de estadounidenses participarón en actividades al aire libre, el más alto nivel de participación en los últimos cinco años.
Sin embargo, el nivel de participación de los hispanos es uno de los más bajos, superando sólo a los afroamericanos. A pesar de eso, cuando los latinos participan en actividades al aire libre, generalmente lo hacen con más frecuencia.
Juan Martínez, embajador de North Face, quien creció entre los edifi cios de South Central Los Ángeles, dijo que este evento es una gran oportunidad para que los latinos se involucren en actividades al aire libre.
“Encontré que conectarse con el aire libre no es tanto quién soy yo sino qué puedo hacer por mi comunidad”, dijo Martínez.

En el caso de los Escobedo, Rudy (el padre) y su hijo Tony son malos, y Javier y Tony Zepeda (yerno de Escobedo) son buenos.
En algunos combates de lucha libre, el que pierde también puede perder su máscara o su cabello.
Fausto Olmos, un actor nacido en Tucson, dijo que los combates en los que los luchadores ponen en juego su máscara o su cabello son aquellos con las apuestas más altas, porque “va en contra de los dioses de la lucha libre” mostrar el rosto.

PHOENIX – It’s Sunday evening and El Gran Mercado in west Mesa is hopping.
Inside Club Deportivo Coliseo, there is no masking the crowd’s enthusiasm for Mexican lucha libre, or freestyle wrestling, although some of the combatants are masked, at least initially, like a comedic super hero.
The weekly main event is under way amid the dilapidated cluster of strip-mall stores turned into a swap meet and a Catholic church. A tag-team match is tied 1-1 in the best-of-three rounds, and Rudy Escobedo Sr., owner of CDC, is searching for something hidden underneath the wrestling ring.
His two oldest sons, Caudillo” and “Aerea Fuerza,” are rappling to gain leverage as they sling each other back and forth against the ropes.
Eventually, the older brother outsmarts the younger, and “Aerea Fuerza” flips over the top rope and down to the pavement.
Just then, Rudy Sr. emerges from below the canvas with a broad leather belt.
He slides around the ring, whacking “Aerea Fuerza” across the chest with the belt before he can climb back the ropes.
The crowd roars.This type of public fighting
among family sounds like a pilot for a bad reality-TV show, but the Escobedos are professional wrestlers and their dysfunction ends with the final bell.
Regardless of who wins, the three men will go back to work together the next morning at their family business, Escobedo Upholstery. Meanwhile, the rest of the Escobedos restart the weekly process of coordinating next Sunday’s lucha libre.
Like Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre, Mexico’s equivalent to World Wrestling Entertainment, the matches at CDC hinge on a constant struggle between the bad guys, or “Rudos,” and the good guys, or “Tecnicos.”
In the Escobedos’ case, Rudy Sr. and son Tony wrestle as bad guys, while son Javier and brother-in-law Tony Zepeda wrestle as good guys.
Lucha libre also places a premium on a wrestler’s mask and/or hair, the public removal of which is sometimes wagered in archrival matches.
Tucson-based actor Fausto Olmos, who played a lucha-libre character in the 2005 movie “El Alambrista,” said the matches, in which wrestlers risk their mask or their hair, are extremely high stakes because it is
“against the lucha-libre god” for the wrestlers to show their face.
“Once you lose your mask, you’re pretty much done,” Olmos said. “A lot of wrestlers retire the name and then come back with a different mask.”
It is possible that one of the Escobedos will have to retire his name this Sunday as a round-robin style tournament dubbed “the roulette of death” will determine which CDC wrestlers are de-masked or receive an impromptu haircut.
Olmos said he became a lifelong fan of lucha libre as a kid in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico.
“In Mexico, lucha libre is kind of like comic-book characters,” Olmos said. “Lucha libre is not just a sport but entertainment. It’s especially geared toward kids.”
Rudy Sr. grew up in Guadalajara, Mexico, and said he followed his uncle, Jose Mario Escobedo, and his two brothers, in joining the Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre.
“I come from a dynasty of wrestlers,” Rudy Sr. said.
Rudy Sr. was 19 and already wrestling professionally when he met the woman who would become his wife of 33 years, Lourdes. Lourdes said she dated Rudy Sr. for two weeks before they married.
“I fell in love with him and he fell in love with me,” said Lourdes, who spends Sundays at CDC collecting the $3 admission charge. “I never imagined I was going to marry a wrestler.”
She said they first visited the U.S. as part of a wrestling tour.
They liked it enough to settle in Chicago, where Rudy began learning the upholstery business and continued wrestling.
The couple began their family and now have five children, ranging in age from 32 to 9.
Rudy Sr. said he started Club Deportivo Coliseo in Chicago but moved to the Valley in 2002 “to get out of the cold.”
Two years ago, Rudy Sr. moved CDC to Mesa.
Rudy Sr. said CDC has about 30 wrestlers, most of whom he trains himself.
“These guys should be traveling the world,” said Josh Cary, who regularly wrestles at CDC under the name “El Guero Loco.”
“Lucha libre is so fast-paced and intense that I have to step it up just to try and keep up.”
The Sunday-afternoon matches (doors open at 2 p.m., wrestling starts at 3) draw capacity crowds almost every week and Rudy Sr. is preparing his three sons, Tony, known as “Caudillo”, Javier, known as “Aerea Fuerza,” and Rudy Jr. to

Escobedo tenía 19 años y ya era un luchador profesional cuando conoció a su esposa, Lourdes, con quien lleva casado 33 años. El noviazgo duró sólo dos semanas antes de casarse.
“Me enamoré de él y él se enamoró de mí”, dijo Lourdes, quien pasa los domingos cobrando los $3 de entrada al CDC. “Nunca me imaginé que me casaría con un luchador”.
La familia se estableció en Chicago, en donde Escobedo aprendió tapicería, pero siguió luchando en el ring. La familia tiene cinco hijos, de 32 a 9 años.
Escobedo comenzó el Club Deportivo Coliseo en Chicago, pero se mudó a Arizona en el 2002 “para escapar del frío”.
Escobedo dijo que CDC tiene 30 luchadores y que él entrena a la mayoría.
“Estos muchachos deberían estar viajando por todo el mundo”, dijo Josh Cary, quien lucha en CDC bajo el nombre de “El Güero Loco”.

“My dream is to have a bigger arena that is made for wrestling,” he said.
“We ask (people) to support us and help us stand out. We want to help kids so that they are not hanging out in the street or using drugs. This way we can all be happy.”
At 53, Rudy Sr. said he plans to wrestle three more years before retiring from the ring and focusing exclusively on managing CDC. He said he keeps the admission price low because many people are struggling fi nancially, but he spends about $1,000 of his own money on CDC every month.
His family spends “every single minute” talking about wrestling, daughter Nancy Escobedo said.
Nancy and her older sister, Evelyn, are also heavily involved in CDC. Evelyn runs CDC’s concessions and her husband, Tony Zepeda, wrestles on Sundays.
Her son, Mark, joins Rudy Jr. in taking Thursday-night wrestling lessons that his grandfather offers to the community.
Nancy spends Wednesday nights with members of the “Rudimania” fan club, helping design weekly fi ght cards and updating CDC’s Facebook page.
On Sundays, she is a jack-of-all-trades, doing everything from unloading supplies to setting up extra chairs.
“Tony and Javier didn’t like it at fi rst,” Nancy said. “They were just doing it for my dad. But then they fell in love with it.”
Tony, 24, followed his father to wrestling events in Chicago.
He said he began training when he was 8 and wrestled in his fi rst match when he was 14.
“When we’re in the ring, that’s what makes us happy,” he said. “It helps us forget the stress of the (work) day.”
Javier, 20, also grew up around the sport. He said he began learning to wrestle when he was 7 and wrestled his fi rst match when he was 17.
“I don’t wrestle for me,” he said. “I wrestle for the people.”
Tony and Javier said they share the same dream, which is to continue their family’s legacy by wrestling in the Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre.
“I’m proud of them,” Rudy Sr. said.

Peyton Manning looks like he’s ready for the regular
season, although he’ll never admit it.
“We’ve still got another week,” Manning said after throwing his first two touchdown passes for the Broncos in a 29-24 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.
The Broncos wrap up the preseason with a trip to Arizona tonight, and it’s unlikely that Manning will make an appearance in the game.
“I’d like to use this week to get an extra start on our opener against Pittsburgh,” Manning said. “That’s what I’ve done in the past.”
The Broncos’ preseason finale against the Cardinals, however, will be more about determining Manning’s primary backup and the final roster.
Caleb Hanie, rookie Brock Osweiler and Adam Weber have all done very little to distinguish themselves as the man who should back up The Man.
None shined after Manning exchanged his helmet for a visor after giving the Broncos a quick 17-0 lead.
Hanie threw an interception and a touchdown pass, Osweiler was 4 of 9 for 27 yards and Weber 4 of 8 for 38 yards.
The backups for the 49ers were much better, erasing a 24-10 halftime deficit on the strength of Anthony Dixon’s 26-yard TD run and four of David Akers’ five field goals.
Manning was close to perfect in his final regular-season tuneup. In less than a quarter of work, he completed 10 of 12 passes for 122 yards,
including TD tosses of 10 and 5 yards to Eric Decker, and the only two misses were a dropped pass by Joel Dreessen and an errant throw to Brandon Stokley, who was held on the play but didn’t draw the flag.
After managing one TD to go with four turnovers in his first seven possessions this preseason, Manning drove the Broncos to scores on all three of his series, then put on his visor with 46 seconds left in the first quarter.
“I think it was nice just to start fast and finish off some drives and put some points on the board and play some good football,” Stokley said.
The Broncos mixed up their looks, throwing in some no-huddle with four-wide receiver sets, using fullback Chris Gronkowski at the point of attack and sending tailback Lance Ball out wide to run routes like a receiver.
“No matter what grouping we were in we showed we could move the ball,” Manning said.
Alex Smith threw a 49-yard TD pass for the Niners, who outscored the Broncos’ backups 19-0 in the second half but lost wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. to an ankle injury.
For the second straight week, the Broncos’ backups were awful. They’ve now been outscored 40-0 after halftime in the last two games.
Denver’s first drive stalled when the replacement officials failed to whistle cornerback Carlos Rogers for a blatant hold on a third-down pass to Stokley, and the Broncos settled for Matt Prater’s 53-yard field goal.

passes for 83 yards on a long drive that ended with his first touchdown throw in orange and blue, a 10-yard strike to Decker, who beat Rogers across the middle.
Ball bruised his ribs on the play and didn’t return. He said afterward he was fine.
So was Manning, who was blasted by linebacker Parys Haralson in the chest right as he released his longest pass of the preseason. After Ball came down with it, Manning bounced right up, raced downfield, lined up in the no-huddle and hit running back Willis McGahee for 14 yards to the San Francisco 12.
It was the second time Manning had been hit hard in the preseason, and both times shook off the cobwebs and responded with a big pass for the first down.
Linebacker Wesley Woodyard recovered a fumbled snap for the Broncos at the San Francisco 24, and four plays later, Manning found Decker wide open by the back left pylon for his second touchdown and a 17-0 lead.
The Broncos’ onside kick backfired when Matthew Willis touched the ball about a yard early.
“I was surprised,” Niners
coach Jim Harbaugh said. “But I’m glad they did it.”
On the next snap, Smith saw linebacker Von Miller on tight end Vernon Davis and hit Davis all alone along the left sideline for a 49-yard score.
“It was a little hard to get in a rhythm,” Smith said, who was sacked just once. “I thought the young guys did a great job in the second half.”
San Francisco’s ground game,was stymied by the Broncos. With LaMichael James (left ankle) and Brandon Jacobs (left knee) sitting this one out, the 49ers were held to 14 yards on nine first-half carries, including two runs for minus-4 yards by Frank Gore.
