Color gamut differences RGB vs CMYK

Here you can actually see the difference between two colorgamut's.To print more accurately we need to use the correct renderiintent for the desired result.

Lets look at which rendering intents to use and in whatcircumstances.

Rendering intents1. Perceptual (photographic) Preserves overall color

appearance In- and out of-gamut colors are

    modified, so that the

    relationship betweenneighboring colors remainsconsistent.

The white point of the sourcegamut is mapped to the whitepoint of the destination gamut.

Typically applied to thereproduction of photos

The perceptual (also called photographic) rendering inten

Perceptual allows an adoption of the source color space to thedestination color space, which is optimized for the perceptualappearance of images - at the cost of colorimetrical accuracy.

Both in-gamut and out-of-gamut colors are modified so that relatiobetween neighboring colors remain consistent. The white point ofsource color space is mapped to that of the destination color spacethe case of a CMYK printing device profile, this means that CMY0, 0, 0 is connected to the CIE color which is equivalent toCIELAB=100, 0, 0. The color of the unprinted medium (paper whignored and the transformation is "relative" to this color.

A typical application for this rendering intent is the perceptuallypleasing reproduction of photos.

If a source color space is larger than the destination gamut, the colcoordinates of the source color space are compressed to the smallegamut this is called gamut compression.

Rendering intents2. Saturation (chroma) Vivid colors without accuracy Converts saturated source colors

to saturated destination colors. Scales source to destination

gamut and preserves relativesaturation. Used for business graphics

where bright and vivid colorsare more important than theexact relationship betweencolors.

The saturation (also called chroma) rendering intent

Saturation represents the amount of gray in proportion to the hue, measured as a percentage from 0% (gray) to 100% (fully saturatedOn the standard color wheel, saturation increases from the center tedge. The rendering intent for business graphics that maintains vivcolor at the expense of accurate color. It scales the source gamut todestination gamut but preserves relative saturation instead of hue, when scaling to a smaller gamut, hues may shift.

This rendering intent is primarily designed for business graphics, wbright saturated colors are more important than the exact relationshbetween colors (such as in a photographic image).

Rendering intents3. Relative colorimetric Mapping colors colorimetrically

as exactly as possible In-gamut colors are not

    modified, but mapped exactly.

Out-of-gamutcolors are replaced by thecolorimetrically nearest colorThe source white point ismapped to destinationwhite point.

Often used for images& photos to preservemore of the original colors.

    WP WP

    The relative colorimetric rendering intent

Relative colorimetric maps colors colorimetrically as exactly as poIn-gamut colors are not modified, but mapped exactly. Out-of-gamcolors are replaced by the colorimetrically nearest color (calledclipping to the closest reproducible hue), which the device can

reproduce. As with the perceptual rendering intent, the white point of the sourcolor space is mapped to the white point of the destination color sp(white on output is the white of the chosen medium, not of the souHere, it is taken into account that our eyes always adapt to the whithe medium we are viewing.

Rendering intents4. Absolute colorimetric Color accuracy at the expense

of color relationships In-gamut colors are left

    unchanged, out-of-gamut colorsare clipped.

Source white point is notmapped to destination whitepoint.

Aim: to maintain color accuracyat the expense of preservingrelationships between colors.

Used mainly for proofing tosimulate the output of oneprinter on a second device.

    WP

    The absolute colorimetric rendering intent

The rendering intent that leaves colors that fall inside the destinatigamut unchanged. Out of gamut colors are clipped. No scaling ofcolors to destination white point is performed, means that it doesnsource white to destination white. E.g. the source color gamut has

bluish white and the destination gamut a yellowish white, cyan is pinto white areas to simulate the white of the original white.

This intent aims to maintain color accuracy at the expense of preserelationships between colors, and is useful for seeing how output wlook on a non-neutral substrate.

Rendering Intent:Relative Colorimetric As cores so mapeadas e as que coincidem no so trocadas

Relative Colorimetric This intent is best for images, such aslogos, where the original needs to exactly match the output.Colors that fall outside of the output device's gamut areconverted to colours at the edge of the gamut, which mayreduce the total number of colours available. For this reason, this intent should only be used when there are relatively fewcolours in an image.

Perceptual This intent is best for photographic images. Therelationship between colours in the original is scaledproportionally to fit the output device's colour gamut. In otherwords, the original gamut will be rescaled to the target device.

Rendering Intent:Saturation As cores mapeadas so foradas para a borda do gamut

Saturation This intent is best for images where true colourmatching is not as important as vivid colours. Colors outsideof the output device's gamut are converted to colours withinthe same saturation but with a different lightness. This intentmay be used to boost colours within a photographic image.
