2 Overview

The Nokia Terminal Management Server (NTMS) allows remote management of the settings in mobile phones and other types of Mobile Terminals connected tothe wireless network. Network operators or application service providers can useit to send correct settings to the phones so the subscribers would really be able toaccess the advanced value-added services available on the network.

Currently the wireless networks can offer a multitude of services: MultimediaMessaging and e-mail, wireless internet access using WAP or Web protocols, calendar and phonebook synchronisation as well as basic data connectivity. Therange of available services is increasing. To use them all properly without lettingthe Nokia Terminal Management Server configure the terminals is quite acomplicated and error-prone manual procedure, which very often exceeds thelevel of skills and interest that most users have.

The Nokia Terminal Management Server helps reduce the amount of time andcompetence which phone dealers or help desk personnel need for setting up aparticular brand of terminal correctly. The Nokia Terminal Management Serversupports special interfaces to the Nokia mobile switching infrastructure, which

enable automatic detection and correct configuration of new phones entering thenetwork. This feature makes it possible, for instance that pre-paid subscribers canget access to value-added services without assistance from the operator helpdesk.

3 Basic features

This chapter covers the major features that are included in the Nokia TerminalManagement Server Basic Package.

3.1 Remote Configuration of Terminal Settings

The Nokia Terminal Management Server is able to send configuration informationto terminals over the wireless network. This release of Nokia Terminal ManagementServer uses short messages formatted according to publicly availablespecifications that are widely implemented in mobile phones, such as Over The Air Settings Specification and Smart Messaging Specification. SMS deliveryreports are used to determine when the information has actually reached theterminal.

The following types of settings are currently supported:

• GPRS, WAP gateway and network access point settings

• Multimedia Messaging Service Centre settings

• Calendar and phonebook synchronisastion server settings

• E-mail settings

• Internet Access Point settings

• Datacall settings including a login script

• SMS service centre number setting

• WAP and Web bookmarks

Note that all terminals and phones do not necessarily support all the types of settings; the actually implemented ones depend on the terminal model.

3.2 Detection of Terminal Capabilities

The system is able to determine the type of terminals based on the IMEI value

received from the mobile network, or based on the information input by users. The system provides a catalogue of terminal descriptions, which can besubsequently updated using information received from Nokia or provided by theoperator of the system. The system also includes a tool which can be used toupdate theassociations of various IMEI values to recognised terminal types basedon information that is available to operators.

3.3 Integration to Provisioning Solutions

The Nokia Terminal Management Server has interfaces that enables its system

integration to the provisioning or customer care, and billing solutions that mayalready exist at the operator. These interfaces allow the rest of the system to useNokia Terminal Management Server for sending the proper configuration messagesas well as to collect charging and reporting information from Nokia TerminalManagement Server. In particular, Nokia Terminal Management Server can be madeto be part of the solution which phone dealers use to enter the proper informationfor a new subscriber into the operator systems. The main tool in this integrationis the Application Interface of Nokia Terminal Management Server.

3.4 Support for Service Provisioning

The Nokia Terminal Management Server permits the operator to send bookmarkspointing to wireless Internet services to the terminals of subscribers. This is onesimple solution to the problem of how subscribers can find services. The NokiaTerminal Management Server Application Interface permits this functionality to beintegrated as an automatic part of the enrollment to subscription-based services.

3.5 Terminal Management by Help Desk Personnel

The system provides Web user-interfaces for help desk personnel to manage the

settings in the subscribers' phones. They can initiate the configuration of a newterminal, inspect the stored settings associated with an existing terminal, modifythe settings and have them sent to the terminal. This speeds up the response tohelp desk calls that can be resolved only by changing the settings of the terminal.

3.6 Terminal Management by Subscribers

The subscriber can make use of the Nokia Terminal Management Server to

personalise the configuration of the terminals he uses. The user has access tothe Nokia Terminal Management Server Web end-user interface to modify and storethe configurations of several phones which might be used with the same phonenumber at various times. In many cases it proves more convenient that doing thesame settings via the limited keyboards available in most phones. This servicealso provides a backup copy of the proper settings, and an easy way to reverteither to the saved settings or to the defaults defined by the operator of NokiaTerminal Management Server.

3.7 Charging and Reporting

The system produces CDR (call/charging detail records) files for billing andreporting purposes. An external billing system then collects the generated CDRfiles at a configured time. Even when the records are not used for billing, theinformation can be used to create reports on how Nokia Terminal ManagementServer has been used. The charging records can be configured to include only thosedetails that the operator is interested in.

3.8 Mass Customisation

Mass customisation allows the operator to change the settings in a group of terminals once the initial configuration has been done. The potentially affectedterminals can be specified using MSISDN ranges or terminal types. During masscustomisation Nokia Terminal Management Server will use its database of terminalinformation to make sure that the new settings are sent only to terminals that areable to use them, and not to all terminals within some MSISDN range, forinstance.

3.9 Management of Terminal Configurations

The management user interface can be used to create and maintain multiplenamed collections of terminal settings, called primary groups. These collectionsof settings can be associated with groups of terminals. When a terminal is to beconfigured for the first time, the settings to be sent are determined by the primarygroup to which the terminal belongs. The actually settings sent are also modifiedby the type of the terminal. The parts of the configuration that the terminal doesnot understand are not sent.

3.10 Support for Bookmark Exchange

The Nokia Terminal Management Server provides a built-in application that

supports the exchange of WAP bookmarks among phone users. Subscribers can use a Web user interface to view existing named groups of interesting bookmarks. Theyalso can define their own groups which will then be visible to the other subscribers. The desired group of bookmarks can be requested to be sent to the subscriber'sown phone using either the Web user interface or a command set in a shortmessage. These features permit phone users to access more convenientlyservices that their friends or acquaintances have found interesting.More elaboratesolutions can be implemented with external applications that use the NokiaTerminal Management Server Application Interface.

3.11 Portal Integration Support

The Nokia Terminal Management Server provides simple authentication of subscribers based on the information, which they submit while requesting a phone to beconfigured. However, the Nokia Terminal Management Server can be set up to beused through a Web portal, in which case the portal will take care of the authenticationand authorisation of the subscribers. When Nokia Terminal Management Server isintegrated with a portal, the operator of the service may also modify its Web-based end-user interfaces to have the same look and feel as the other services inthe portal.

3.12 Software Redundancy

The system includes a software mechanism that monitors whether it is operatingproperly. If the system becomes unresponsive, it will be automatically restarted. This ensures that the system will continue operating as long as the hardware andoperating system environment are not malfunctioning.

3.13 Operation and Maintenance

Operation and maintenance is done by different areas of management. Theoperator can use the Web-based graphical user interface to take care of most of the management tasks. Command line tools are used for importing new licencekeys and new terminal descriptions into the system.

4 Optional features

Currently the only optional feature associated with the Nokia TerminalManagement Server is the automatic detection of new terminals entering themobile network.

4.1 Automatic Detection of New Terminals

The Nokia Mobile Switching Centre, using software release M11 can use theoptional feature 1433: Terminal Management Support . This feature allows theVLRs in the network to inform the Nokia Terminal Management Server aboutterminals that are using the network. This allows the Nokia TerminalManagement Server to send the appropriate configuration information to theterminal automatically, without any human assistance needed to initiate theconfiguration process. The feature not only discovers completely new terminals, but also reports terminals that are used with a new MSISDN. This enables NokiaTerminal Management Server to configure also terminals, used with pre-paid

SIM cards. The Terminal Management Support  feature currently transfersterminal information to the Nokia Terminal Management Server during off-peak hours (typically once a day) using a protocol based on FTP.
