New Statewide Mask Rules Please be advised that the State has promulgated new face covering rules requiring each bar and restaurant customer to wear a mask whenever inter- acting with staff. This means wearing a mask while ordering, receiving table service, and when picking up food for carry-out. This new rule has been added to Chicago's exist- ing reopening guidelines, which can be found at chicago.gov/reopening. As a reminder, all of Chi- cago's reopening guidelines can be enforced by the City of Chicago and it is the responsibility of the business to ensure compliance. Furthermore, per State law, everyone over the age of two who can medically tolerate a mask must still wear a mask whenever they are unable to maintain social distance and whenever they are in a public/ shared space – whether inside or outdoors. Boy Scouts Camping Trip Over the weekend of Aug 14th members of St. Mary Star of the Sea Boy Scout Troop 1441 at- tended a Camping trip at Camp Wolverine on the Qwasippe Scout Reservation in Twin Lakes, Michi- gan. Scouts participated in a night star hike, bike trail rides, fishing, gaga ball, word & board games and campfires for marshmallow toasting. Scouts also sharpened their skills for rank ad- vancement as well as their cooking skills, preparing all the meals for the entire Troop daily. Any boys ages 6 to 17 interested in scouting, can have a parent contact Ed Melkonian at 312-316- 5825 for further information. Alderman’s Corner This first week of September looks a lot different for our parents, teachers and students this year. Some of our Catholic schools are in-person learning while others and our public schools will have all remote learning. I wish everyone the best of luck with the school year and new changes that will be imple- mented. I know it will be hard on everyone. Our Ward Superintendent, Patrick Botica, has of- ficially retired effective September 1st. Patrick has been the best Ward Superintendent in the City. The residents of the 11th Ward have truly appreciated his commitment and dedication to keeping the 11th Ward clean and safe. Thank you! This month we will be busy with many of our in- frastructure projects throughout the Ward. Each year Aldermen appropriate $1.3 million for infrastructure projects throughout their respective Ward. These projects include street resurfacing, lighting, hazardous sidewalks and HD Cameras that are controlled by the Chicago Police and Office of Emergency Management Control (OEMC). In 2020, we are planning to resurface 5 streets, resurface 11 alleys, resur- face 12 sidewalks and reconstruct 5 curb and gutters. Please visit our website www.ward11.org to see a map of the 2020 projects as well as all of the work we have done since 2015. Prior to the start of a project, we will notify you via letter outlining the details of the project. The letter provides the scope of the work and an estimated timeline of the project. If you have a request, please do not hesitate to contact my office. On September 16th, 2020, in conjunction with the Canaryville Improvement Association and CAPS meeting, we will be hosting a property tax appeal event with Commissioner Cabonargi. The event will be held at 6:00pm. Please bring a copy of your tax bill to complete the tax appeal forms. If you have questions, an analyst will be on site to assist. Please arrive with a mask to ensure everyone’s safety. Mayor Lightfoot and the Office of Budget and Management began “Budget Week” on Monday. “Budget Week” is a weeklong series of virtual budget town hall meetings, live streamed on Facebook, and the launch of a new interactive web- site where residents can submit questions for the town hall series as well as find other ways to provide feedback for the upcoming budget. You can watch the live- stream tonight-Friday at 6:00pm by visiting www.facebook.com/chicagomayor soffice Tonight concerns human services, tomorrow infrastructure and Friday Neigh- borhood and Economic Development. These live streams will also be available to watch next week at www.chicago.gov/2021budget If you have not done so already, please visit 2020census.gov to complete the census. The 11th Ward response rate is only at 57%. Please encourage your family, neighbors and friends to fill out the census. If you do not have internet access, please reach out to my office and we will be happy to assist you. I look forward to everyone having a safe Labor Day weekend. I want to thank our friends in Labor for all they do for us. They are the backbone of the middle class. Finally, I will be hosting my Quarterly Aldermanic Meeting virtually on Sep- tember 29th at 6:00pm. Fit to a “TEA”: The Best Teas for Healing

and WellnessA HOT CUP OF TEA CAN MEAN

RELAXATION, A TIME OUT FOR YOURSELF, A

MEANS TO CENTER YOUR ENERGY, OR EVEN

JUST A RETREAT FROM THE WORLD FOR A

FEW MINUTES OF PERSONAL REFLECTION.

THAT IS NOT NEW WISDOM EITHER. IN

PARTS OF THE WORLD, A GOOD, HOT

CUP OF TEA HAS PROVIDED SOLACE AND

REJUVENATION FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS.

During this COVID-19 pandemic, self-care and emotional health are more important than ever. In the face of unprecedented uncertainty, it’s easy to become overwhelmed

We know it’s best to follow the expert’s guidelines: As much as possible, keep away from crowds. And if you’re out, practice social distancing. Train yourself and your

children in good handwashing technique. Cover your coughs and sneezes with your elbow. But what else is important, right now, on our journey toward a brighter future?

Use these tips to improve your family’s mind and body health while everyone stays safe at home.

Now modern wellness experts recognize

that besides the emotional balm a tea break can

provide, some teas can heal everything from an

upset stomach, to sleeplessness, to depression.

Here are the best three teas to help you get

through the symptoms of day-to-day anxiety:

Rosemary – Spicy and fragrant, this pert-tast-

ing herbal tea offers relief from headaches and

anxiety. Its high doses of calcium and iron make

it a great source of minerals, and studies even

show it’s rich in antioxidants.

In parts of Europe, rosemary is often used to

it helps improve blood circulation and enhanc-

es memory and concentration. Medical studies

indicate it can also do much to prevent macular

(optical) decay, prevent brain aging, and relieve

indigestion.

Rosemary tea is a simple recipe – just use

one tablespoon of dried rosemary leaves for one

cup of tea.

Chamomile – One of the most famous teas,

the oils of this gentle-tasting brew provide relief

from stomach and digestive problems, including

colitis. It’s used as a relaxer to aid in a good

night’s sleep. The fresh taste, not unlike apples, is

strong but not overpowering or bitter, so it’s a

great complement to breakfast toast or fruit.

In most cases, chamomile is available in either

German or Roman (also called English) varieties.

and one tablespoon is enough for one cup. When

used over several months, it can even help

chronic sleep and stomach issues.

Thyme - While the sharp taste and distinct

aroma might challenge some tea drinkers, the

herb thyme can help reduce coughing, alleviate

painful bronchitis symptoms, and relieve com-

mon sinus pressure. It works to cleanse the

organs of the body, boosting the immune system

and also helping in urination and menstruation.

When making tea, thyme takes a little time.

Use two teaspoons of the dried herb per cup,

and steep for ten minutes. For the best results,

drink one cup three times a day.

First things first, you will need to stock up on a few eco-friendly products. You can either buy pre-made products that are made by green companies, or you can simply make them yourself—don’t worry, you do not have to be a chemist to whip these up.Here is how to formulate your own green cleaning products:• pickling vinegar (more concentrated than white vinegar)• baking soda• borax powder• lemons• a few essential oils• mild dish soap

• a couple of spray bottles.

KITCHEN: Use vinegar to create a natural all-purpose cleaner for the kitchen. Vinegar itself is edible; it contains no toxic chemicals that would be harmful if ingested, so it is a perfect cleaning product to use around food.

D.I.Y. all-purpose cleaner - using an empty spray bottle, combine a solution of half pickling vinegar, half warm water and one tablespoon of dish washing liquid. This solution can be used to clean the counter top, stovetop, refrigerator and microwave. Vinegar is excellent for use in your dishwasher too. Add a cup of vinegar to your machine to remove any stagnant odors; it will leave the interior shiny and squeaky clean. You can also add it to your water when washing dishes by hand, the disinfecting power is sure to kill any bacteria and germs on your dinnerware. Vinegar has a distinct odor, but don’t worry; the smell will dissipate once it dries. Caution! Some surfaces, like marble, tarnish when treated with vinegar & other acidic substances. As with any product, it’s best to test a small area to make sure it is safe to proceed.

BATHROOM: Bathroom cleaners are among some of the harshest chemical cleaners. You can make your own bathroom scrubbing solution to clean toilets, counter tops, fixtures and tubs/shower without the offensive fumes.

D.I.Y. tub and shower scrubbing solution – combine half a cup of vinegar, three fourths a cup of baking soda and one tablespoon of lemon juice, mix together to form a thick paste (add more or less baking soda until desired consistency is achieved). Using a sponge, apply the solution on sinks, tubs, showers and fixtures in small circular motions. Let it sit for 20-30 minutes, scrub with a sponge and rinse with warm water. To clean bathroom counter tops, use the all-purpose solution created for the kitchen. Knock out toilet stains and odors with one cup of undiluted vinegar. Before pouring the vinegar in the toilet, it is best to flush the toilet and allow the water to go down, the water descends, pour the vinegar around the inner rim then scrub the bowl with a toilet brush.

WINDOWS AND MIRRORS: The kitchen solution works here too. Simply spray and wipe for squeaky clean windows. Save paper towels

and instead use old newspapers; they won’t leave behind any lint.

WOOD AND TILE FLOORS: Nothing spreads chemicals in the air faster than mopping the whole house with a toxic chemical cleaner. You can easily make your own mopping solution that will clean and disinfect your floors safely.

D.I.Y. floor cleaner: In your mop bucket mix one cup of pickled vinegar, one gallon of water, one tablespoon of mild dish soap and the desired amount of your favorite scented oil. Your house will smell so fresh, and the best part is, your home will be thoroughly sanitized and chemical free.

CARPETS: Many carpet fresheners have a fruity or floral scent bearing the disguise of toxic fumes that can potentially be harmful to your health. It is very simple to make your own fresh smelling carpet deodorizer, and it will be safe for the family and pets too.

D.I.Y. carpet deodorizer: Combine one cup of baking soda with one cup of borax in a plastic bag, add the desired amount of your favorite essential oil, and then mix together. Sprinkle the powder solution on carpets, let stand for 20 minutes, then vacuum. Your house and carpet will smell delightful.

During a Pandemic

Disasters Don’t Wait Make Your Plan Today National Preparedness Month

Launches September 1st   September is National Preparedness Month, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Region V office in Chicago encourages everyone to take time out of their busy schedules to learn about the disasters that may threaten their community and take steps to limit the impacts of those risks for themselves and their families.   “The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need to prepare for disasters of all types and con-sider how they may affect our lives,” said Kevin M. Sligh, acting regional administrator, FEMA Region 5. “Start by making a family plan and making sure you have what you need in case of any emergency. Then find ways to get involved—whether by volun-teering and receiving training to support disaster preparedness, donating to a local organization or promoting preparedness online— to help ensure your community is stronger and more resilient to fu-ture disaster risks.” As our nation continues to re-spond to COVID-19, there is no better time to get involved. Get engaged as each week focuses on a different aspect of preparedness:   Week 1, September 1 - 5: Make a Plan. Talk to your friends and family about how you will commu-nicate before, during, and after a disaster. Make sure to update your plan based on the Centers for Disease Control recommendations due to the coronavirus.   Week 2, September 6-12: Build A Kit. Gather sup-plies that will last for several days after a disaster for everyone living in your home. Don’t forget to consider the unique needs each person or pet may have in case you have to evacuate quickly. Update your kits and supplies based on recommendations by the Centers for Disease Control.   Week 3, September 13-19: Prepare for Disasters. Limit the impacts that disasters have on you and your family. Know the risk of disasters in your area and check your insurance coverage. Learn how to make your home stronger in the face of storms and other common hazards and act fast if you receive a local warning or alert.   Week 4, September 20-26: Teach Youth About Preparedness. Talk to your kids about preparing for emergencies and what to do in case you are sepa-rated. Reassure them by providing information about how they can get involved.   For detailed information about how to be ready for the emergencies you may be at risk for visit Ready.gov or our Spanish site at Listo.gov. You can also download the free FEMA app, available for your Android or Apple device. Learn more about National Preparedness Month by visiting Ready.gov /September

*** Don’t be afraid to be authentic, show up in the world as you truly are. Be as you meant to be, but be light with it. Love it, give it, share it, laugh at it, walk everywhere with it. Be in the world but not of it.
