Artist Dsiree Tonnaer madea city map from stone with abronze stamp featuring Rieussignature on top. The stamp is areference to the mark hes left onthe city, the artist said. MayorOnno Hoes was pleased to beable to present the plaque, whichwas made in honour of the musi-

cians 65th birthday. The unveiling of the plaque wasaccompanied by the drum andbugle corps of the Sainte CcileOrchestra from Eijsden.Andr Rieu was especially hon-

oured by the plaque at the whitehouse along the Jeker River, inthe municipal park. The citycouncil didnt have to do that, but I am certainly impressed. It isdefinitely a sign of recognition. And its supposed to be around

for centuries. The book on the Maastricht mu-sicians success, published byMaastricht University, focuses

on the deeper reasons behindhis success. According to thewriters, it is mainly because ofhis ability to appeal to his audi-ences sensitive side. He bringsthe music back to its original es-sence. The researchers have par-ticularly noticed his open com-munication with the audience in

the concert halls and out on thesquares. Where many contem-porary classical music ensemblesstruggle to reach a wide enoughaudience, Andr Rieu managesto win over the hearts of the

masses with his heart-felt wayof playing and performing, oneof the researchers said.Andr Rieu commented on thebook with an amusing remark:They usually write books onpeople who have been dead for a

while; in my case, I still get toexperience it.

In May of this year, Andr Rieu was honoured twice in one day:

quite the joyous occasion for Rieu. First, the first scientific book

written about Rieus success was presented at Museum aan hetVrijthof, followed by the unveiling of the plaque at Rieus childhood

    home in Maastricht Municipal Park.

Andr Rieu had been thinking about giving concerts at the

Vrijthof in the centre of his hometown Maastricht for a

while, but it took quite some time to organise the events theway he had pictured them. He needed the assistance of the munici-

pality and the entrepreneurs at the Vrijthof, who had to give their

square to their most famous inhabitant for a couple of nights. In

2005, everything was arranged to start a remarkable tradition.

It started with three concerts, now in 2015 there are seven

concerts at the Vrijthof. Everyyear more and more people fromabroad come to Maastricht forthese special concerts. Nowabout half of the visitors come

    from outside the Netherlandsand Belgium.

    "They come from

everywhere, says Pierre Rieu,CEO of Andr Rieu Travel.

    "We

have people from Brazil, Argen-tina, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and from

many countries in Europe. Espe-cially from the United Kingdomwe may say welcome to manyfans. Most of them have seen myfather in a concert in their own

land, but they think that theVrijthof-concerts are the mostspecial of all.

Andr Rieu doesnt just bringhis normal program in Maas-

tricht, he also invites artistsfrom all over the world to joinhim on stage, from Trini Lopez toJermaine Jackson. And every year there is a kind ofwarming up with the Orchestraband Sainte Ccile.

Sainte Ccile from Eijsden playsat the Vrijthof just before AndrRieu and his orchestra get onstage. More than a hundred mu-

sicians walk down the squareand pass the sidewalk cafs andcreate a great atmosphere. Rieuinvites this orchestra band fora reason: only the best is good

enough. Sainte Ccile won theWorld Music Contest in Kerkrade

in the world division for thesecond time in 2013 and wascrowned champion of the Neth-erlands many times.

Andr Rieu likes the Vrijthof-concerts very much.

    "It is my

hometown, that gives an extrawarm feeling. And because thesquare is not too big and peopleare sitting on the terraces, you

    get a wonderful atmosphere."

    According to Andr Rieu, part

of his success is due to the fact

that he was born and raised in

Limburg. We have a very rich

    culture here, which can really

shape you, especially at a young

    age. For example, I remember

often going to church with my

parents as a child. Holy Masslike that can be very impressive

    in Catholic traditions, especially

    during Easter and Christmas. Its

not just about religion: theres a

lot of music, singing, the church

is nicely decorated and such. In

    the Catholic church in particular,

    celebrations like that also tend

to be a bit theatrical, which I

    always loved.

    Andr Rieu was influenced

not only by religion, but also by

Limburgs broad music and folkculture, which has longstanding

    traditions. Almost every town

    and city neighbourhood has

its own brass band or concert

    orchestra. People are raised with

music from an early age, so itskind of in our genes. It also has

a lively aspect to it; its optimis-

tic. I think that definitely has

something to do with why my

concerts are always such a party.

Its a party for us too.

Andr Rieu himself is an ambas-

sador of the World Music Fes-

    tival (WMC) in Kerkrade, where

ANDR RIEU ISPLEASED WITH HISLIMBURG ROOTS

    top music ensembles from all

    over the world come together

every four years. It is important

for young people to learn how to

play an instrument, so as to be

    able to play music themselves

and not just learn how to use

    a computer.

    It is precisely Limburgs interna-

    tional location which has made

it possible for Andr Rieu to lead

    an entire international orchestra.

    The Province of Limburg, with

Maastricht as its capital, is lo-

    cated right between Belgium and

Germany. France is not far off

either. When I take a walk around

my house, I can go 1 kilometre

and end up in Belgium. Shoppers

at the market in Maastricht are

spoken to in French, English orGerman, if they want. Thats how

    its always been. The Maastricht

    dialect has many French and

    German influences as well.

Because of that, we feel at

    home anywhere in the world,

    and easily make contact with

    the audience.

    Many members of the Johan

    Strauss Orchestra are from

    the area, but that includes

Limburg as well as Belgiumand Germany. Its easy for

    everyone, since our studio in

    Maastricht is closeby. They

havent had to move and can

keep living in their own country.

    That international aspect is in

our blood. Thats why we dont

feel like we live on the edge of

    the Netherlands; instead, we

feel like we live in the centre of

Europe. No matter where in the

world Im on stage, it is always

with great pride that I tell theaudience Im from Maastricht,

    Limburg. And yes, thats in

Holland, even if it is all the

    way near the border.

The 36-year old painter has beenfascinated by art since childhood. As a toddler, he would get the cat-alogues out of his parents book-cases to admire all the lovely im-ages. In 1990 - the year of Vincentvan Gogh - he made the definitivedecision to do something with art.He studied Art History and Ar-chaeology in Nijmegen, a degreehe completed with a thesis on Ro-

mantic period in 2006. In addition,he took painting classes here andthere, as his interest in the prac-tice of painting continued as well. Now, he has been a full-time

painter for years, with a focus onimaginative landscapes. He callshimself a suggestive illusionist;he paints suggestive (dreamy, romantic) works in which he en-chants reality using his brush asa magic wand - hence his self-

coined artistic movement sug-gestive illusionism. His work isoften on display in galleries in theNetherlands and abroad.

    THE HISTORYOF MAASTRICHTand musketeerdArtagnan

Perhaps he did not get the most visible location in Maastricht, but

it is a nice one with quite a bit of foliage. In solid bronze he stands

at the city wall in the park, forever ready to draw his sword. The

musketeer dArtagnan perished here in 1673, in service of the French Sun

King Louis XIV, who conquered the city. He grew into a kind of ambassador

    of Maastrichts history.

    The Meuses geographical location

    has resulted in Maastricht being

the stage for defense and con-

    quests for centuries. Maastricht is

a fortified city with walls and a fort.

    Those conquests started as early

as 50 B.C. when the Romans drove

out the Celts and built a bridge over

the river. For the record, that is notthe old Servaasbrug that connects

the two parts of the city - that

one is from the thirteenth century.

This bridge was named after Saint

    Servatius, the bishop who came

to Maastricht in the fourth century

    A.D. His basilica and accompanying

    treasure chamber have attracted

    pilgrims and visitors for many

    centuries.

You can read the history from the

towers while looking out over the

city from Mount Saint Peter. Theoldest, Romanesque churches are

those of the Saint Servatius basilica

(allegedly built on the grave of Saint

    Servatius and four Merovingian

    churches) of which construction

started around the year 1000,just like the basilica of Onze-

    Lieve-Vrouw-Tenhemelopening,

    popularly referred to as Slevrouwe,

to which people come from near

and far to light a candle. The red-

painted tower of the Sint Janskerk,

the Gothic church of the Protestant

    community with frescos from the

fifteenth century is a bit more re-

cent, built in the thirteenth century.

    Throughout the course of history,

more and more towers were built

in the city. The most striking tower

is that of the Bonnefanten Mu-

    seum, designed by Italian architect

    Aldo Rossi, built in 1995.

    Throughout the course of history,

    Maastricht was often fought over.

The Spanish settled in the city, fol-lowed by the French. The forts, the

remains of the ranks and the city

walls are a symbol of Maastrichts

    military strategic function. One

can look out over the city from

Mount Saint Peter, count the years

by means of the towers and go to

the city centre to find all kinds of

treasures and remains of the rich

    history of the city.

    Around 1800, all residents of

    Maastricht became French citizens,

which will have pleased dArtagnan- though he will probably have

turned in his grave, wherever that

may be, when the city was taken

    by the Dutch in 1814.

    During this summer 2015 a

movie will be launched withthe title Code M, the sword of

    dArtagnan, a modern interpreta-

    tion of his history.

The life of Andr Rieu and his family was strongly influenced by the

Second World War. Remarkable, especially seeing the fact that the

Maastricht violinist was born years after the liberation.

    THE LIBERATIONOF MAASTRICHT

For history buffs, its easy to

    remember: in Maastricht, the

    Second World War lasted exactly

four years, four months and four

days. There are still residents of

    Maastricht who can remember

how the little city on the Meuse

    River was liberated in September

1944 - as the first Dutch city -

    by the 30th Infantry Division,

    also called the Old Hickory

    Division, like it was yesterday.

    A square in Maastricht was

    named after this important

    American military unit, where

    the liberation of Maastricht is

    commemorated annually at a

    special liberation tree.

    The Maastricht district Wyck

    (across the Meuse River) was

first in line on 13 September

    1944. Within mere hours, the

    Americans freed the now so

    bustling city district of the

    Germans, who calmly left the

city on foot or by bicycle without

    putting much of a fight.

It must have been quite an odd

    phenomenon: the eastern banks

    of the Meuse celebrated

    excitedly, while it

    was pitch-dark in the still

    occupied western part of the

    city (with Onze Lieve Vrou-

    weplein, the Vrijthof and the

    Markt): a bizarre situation which

wouldnt last long. The next day,

on 14 September 1944, the Old

    Hickory Division had control over

all of Maastricht, a theme that

    was commemorated in detail

in the summer of 2014 withan extensive programme for

    the 70-year anniversary of the

    liberation of Maastricht.

    Though Andr Rieu was born

more than five years after the

    liberation of Maastricht (on 1

October 1949, to be exact) he

    grew up like many children

    of his generation with much

    knowledge

    of the Second World

    War, especially thanks to the

stories he was told by his par-ents. Stories of brave American

    soldiers who went through

    countless hardships during the

    advance over the European

mainland. Many of them had lost

comrades leading up to the lib-eration of Maastricht, or would

lose them in the tough months

    still to come.

    The family of Andrs wife

Marjorie also spoke of the foreign

    soldiers, who had risked their

    lives to rescue the Netherlands

    from German tyranny, with enor-

    mous gratitude and respect.

    Marjories

    Her Jewish father fled from

Berlin to the Netherlands in the

30s for fear of the upcoming

Nazism. The only thing he owned

    was a briefcase with records

from that time. During the war,

he went into hiding and stayed

    with Marjories mother, who

    was part of the resistance.

In 2013, one of Andrs concerts

at the Vrijthof was given on

    Dutch Veterans Day. To show

    how much he appreciates

    young people fighting for peace

    and freedom, he invited 3,500

    veterans and their partners and

guides to come to his concert on

    the famous square on Saturday

29 June of the same year. The

    soldiers -

    which included the

elderly as well as young soldiers

    - got more than just a specialseat; they were put in the lime-

    light by Andr himself.

    Andrs son and production

    manager Pierre maintains the

memory of the war and theliberation in his own way: he

    collects vehicles of the Allied

forces and hopes to be able to

put them in a museum someday.

Valkenburg is a small but lovely

town with a great history. Its

only 10 minutes by car from

Maastricht. You find historicalwalls and towers. And it has

    some nice locations. For exam-

    ple Thermae 2000. Ever since

    1987, when high above on

the Cauberg, the source of the

    40,000-year-young medical

    mineral water has been dis-

    covered, Valkenburg has been

    allowed to use the add-on

    healing spa before its name.

In 1998, on the summit of the

    mountain Cauberg, immedi-

    ately beside the ultramodern

    Holland Casino*, as a sup-

    plement to the spa complex

    Thermae 2OOO*, a health

    resort park was established

    that boasts vast gardens.

South-Limburg:More than just a short break

A short break in South Limburg - youhave to be an early riser for this because

there is so much to do and experience.Decision-making may be difficult at times.Exciting marl caves in Valkenburg and thelabyrinth on the Vaalserberg, magical themeparks, zoos like the GaiaZOO in Kerkrade, where the animals can even partly run free,

flowering gardens and spacious parks, stun-ning culture and monuments, water sportson the River Meuse and skiing in Europeslargest indoor ski arena and, and, and

Museums, galleries and studiosHistory and culture are there in SouthLimburg in abundance. For centuries, thearea had been a bone of contention of em-

perors, kings and bishops, evidence of whichcan be found today in the numerous mus-eums and galleries. Visit South Limburg anddiscover art, history and culture, to expe-rience up close and personal and to partici-pate in. For details, please also see ourwebsite www.southlimburg.com.

    Land of castles and fortresses

Of the hundreds of castles and palaces thathave shaped its landscape in earlier times,South Limburg still boasts a lot of them thathave been very carefully restored. Thus, it ispossible for the common people to visit thosenoble fortresses. Just come and explore thebeautiful castles and palaces that adorn thelandscape.

Marl caves and grottosSouth Limburg is largely dominated by

marlstone caves. Especially around theValkenburg area, you can find the 250 km-long underground passages that have madeit famous. The caves are also used to recon-struct a bygone age - a copy of a coal mineand a reconstruction of the Roman cata-combs, for instance. But there are alsomany other activities to be enjoyed, such asunderground Christmas markets, survival

and cycling tours and mountain bike ridesare all being held here, offering visitors theunique South Limburg experience.

Euregio Pleasure, European diversity styleThis southernmost part of Limburg issurrounded on all sides by foreigncountries - Belgium and Germany. The cities of Aachen, Liege and Hasseltare just a stones throw away from eachother and we would like to invite youto take a trip there. Over the past years, the Wyck

WMC SPREADSITS WINGS WITHANDR RIEUAS ITS PATRON

It isnt for a while, but preparations for the 17th edition of the World

Music Festival (WMC) in 2017 are in full swing. Andr Rieu has been a

patron of the world-renowned wind music festival since 2013. It is a

festival in which Limburgs borderless reputation as a wind music province

receives as much attention as the international uniting dimension of music,

    marching and show parades.

    In Kerkrade, the universal

power of expression of music is

    celebrated with a notable main

role for young talent. With pro-

    grammes like WMC Young Gener-

    ation, the organisation is building

    bridges between the established

    order and talented upcoming

musicians. WMC Kerkrade bringstogether culture and hospitality

    and provides young people the

    opportunity to develop within a

    professional environment. For

    the WMC, the development of

wind music in Limburg and the

Euregion is as much a key factor

    as the developmental process of

global wind music. The WMC is

leading in that area, and is seen

as the top musical experience for

    both amateurs and profession-

    als alike.

    WMC Kerkrade and Andr Rieu

share a common belief in the

    connective power of music.

    Music literally crosses borders

and speaks the language of theheart. Andr Rieu has proven that

    music breaks down borders, from

    Australia to Romania. Where

there is music, people will come

together. It can provide a valuable

    connection between people who

    understand each other, regard-

    less of each others descent,

    political views or religious beliefs.

    Furthermore, Andr Rieu has

    worked for years to introduce

    young people to music. Andr

Rieu believes in music. Andr Rieu

    believes in youth.

    WMC Kerkrade identifies with

    a universal celebration of and

    participation in music. Every

four years, people from all four

corners of the earth come toKerkrade to make music and have

    fun with kindred spirits.

    The relationship between Andr

Rieu and the WMC goes way

    back. The WMC Kerkrade wishes

    everyone lots of musical enjoy-

    ment at Andr Rieus spectacular

    concerts at Vrijthof in Maastricht!

    Maastricht University

First of all, there is Maastricht

    University, a relatively young

    university preparing to celebrate

its 40-year anniversary. In quite a

    short time, Maastricht Univer-

sity has grown into one of theNetherlands main universities

and has also ranked among top

    universities internationally; the

    figures speak for themselves.

    MU has over 16,000 students,

of which nearly half are from

abroad, and from no less than

    108 different countries. With 17

    Bachelor programmes and 50

    Master programmes, MU offers

    a very wide range of courses.Furthermore, project-oriented

    education was implemented

    here from the beginning, mean-

ing that studying at MU has a

strong focus on practice. The fact

that almost all education at MUis given in English shows how

    international this university really

is. It has had a major influence on

the city of Maastricht. The pres-

ence of so many young students

    from so many countries has

given it a unique and contempo-

    rary dynamic.

    www.maastrichtuniversity.nl

The international nature of Maastricht is displayed in the range of courses

offered by its study programmes. From Maastricht University to the United

World College, the spectrum is very broad and very cross-border oriented.

That is typical for a city which was always internationally oriented, and it is

with good reason that the most international art fair in the world is held here.

UWC Maastricht is one of the

    youngest in the UWC group

    of schools and colleges and

    unique within the movement as

    the only school operating within

    a national public school funding

    context, educating students

    from pre-school age through

the International Baccalaure-ate programme. UW Maastricht

    recruits residential students

    of demonstrated promise and

    potential through the UWC

    National Committee network

    to join our international day

    student community for their

final two years of high school.

    All teachers contribute to the

    co-curricular and pastoral care

    programmes through a core

    commitment to our mission,

vision, and values, in whichwe place the supportive and

    trusting relationship formed

    with and between students, at

the heart of our enterprise. As

    a community, UWC believes

in the growth mindset: thatintelligence, personality and

    character can be developed

    and a persons true potential

    is unknown (and unknowable)

    and that teachers and students

have much to learn from and

with each other. The new UWC

    was opened by King Willem-

    Alexander who himself has

    experience with the study-pro-

    grammes of UWC. Maastricht

is proud to have a United World

    College to express the interna-

    at the Onze Lieve Vrouweplein

    in Maastricht, has been offer-

    ing courses and seminars to

    European civil servants for over

30 years. It is where people who

    deal with European affairs can

    learn in a multi-cultural environ-

    ment benefiting from a unique

combination of practical know-how and scientific excellence.

We aim to contribute to collabo-

    ration and integration between

the EU Member States by pro-

    viding services that allow public

    administration staff responsible

for EU affairs to further improve

    their skills, explains Marga

    Prhl, Director-General of EIPA.

On the one hand, the Institute

    focuses on training civil serv-

    ants on European affairs and

public administration; on theother, it carries out practical

    research to guarantee that the

    training courses offered are

    relevant and up to date.

EIPA offers a wide range of

    courses and seminars open

    to anyone who is interested.

    Furthermore, EIPA offers cus-

    examples are the courses we

offer in preparation of the EU

    Dutch regional authority on

    a combination of intensive
