The Origin and Development of the Perfective AspectMarker Hiu in Early Cantonese

    (A Summary)

    Bit-chee Kwok Shin Kataoka

The present paper attempts to explore the origin and the development of the perfectiveaspect marker hiu in Early Cantonese (EC). It is well known that the alternation betweenhiu and zo is one of the most striking grammatical changes in Cantonese in the pastcentury. In order to achieve a better understanding of the history of Cantonese, the story ofhiu doubtlessly needs an in-depth examination. In this article, (1) EC materials compiled bymissionaries and native Cantonese, and (2) inter-dialectual comparison will be served as themain basis for our discussion. It is pointed out that hiu was probably derived from the verbjau (to rest, to stop). Following a general path of grammaticalization, jau has finallydeveloped into a perfective aspect marker. We have presented different stages ofdevelopment of this jau as attested in historical documents. The pronunciation of the word,on the other hand, is a result of phonological retention. Grammatical words like hiuconstitute an essential part of a language. It is thus instructive to undertake more research onthese elements.
