All people are welcome to receive the bread and wine at Holy Communion (Eucharist). After approaching the altar, you may stand or kneel. Place one hand on top of the other to receive the bread. Please help guide the cup when receiving the wine or, if you prefer, dip your bread into the wine. If you do not wish to share in the bread and wine, you are invited to come forward and cross your hands over your chest to receive a blessing. Everyone at the

altar will be acknowledged.

The Second Reading Hebrews 13:1-8,15-16

Let mutual love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to

strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without

knowing it.

Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with

them; those who are being tortured, as though you yourselves were

being tortured.

Let marriage be held in honor by all, and let the marriage bed be kept

undefiled; for God will judge fornicators and adulterers.

Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what

you have; for he has said, “I will never leave you or forsake you.” So we

can say with confidence,

“The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me?”

Remember your leaders, those who spoke the word of God to you;

consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. Jesus

Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

The Gospel Luke 14:1,7-14

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

On one occasion when Jesus was going to the house of a leader of the

Pharisees to eat a meal on the sabbath, they were watching him

closely.

When he noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, he told

them a parable. “When you are invited by someone to a wedding

banquet, do not sit down at the place of honor, in case someone more

distinguished than you has been invited by your host; and the host who

invited both of you may come and say to you, `Give this person your

place,’ and then in disgrace you would start to take the lowest place.

But when you are invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, so that

when your host comes, he may say to you, `Friend, move up higher’;

then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at the table with

you. For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who

humble themselves will be exalted.”

He said also to the one who had invited him, “When you give a

luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your

relatives or rich neighbors, in case they may invite you in return, and

you would be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the

crippled, the lame, and the blind. And you will be blessed, because they

The Baptismal Covenant Please stand as you are able.

Intercessor Do you believe in God the Father? People I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

Intercessor Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? People I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Intercessor Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? People I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

People Thank you for the harvest blessings of summer: for ripe tomatoes, butter on sweet corn, and raspberries full with flavor.

Intercessor We pray that people of faith everywhere might live in harmony, together giving praise for the richness of all that is holy and beautiful.

People Teach us to live in peace.

Intercessor We pray for all those who work for justice and healing, particularly those who work for an end to war, racism, and poverty; and for those who risk much for the common good.

St. Mary’s offers a gluten-free communion option, using rice crackers and wine that have been stored separately.

They are available on the pulpit side (the right side as you are facing the altar), so please join the right-hand line for communion. Please inform the priest of your gluten-free needs. You may take a rice cracker directly from the bowl or simply open your palm to receive it.

Welcome to St. Mary’s annual restart of the program year! It’s almost time for school to start, the cabins to be closed up for the summer, and the docks to be taken in. Don’t be glum! LET’S CELEBRATE that we will all be back together worshiping and sharing our lives. Come ready to share your summer adventures with old and new friends.

Remember, on the 15th we will have only the one service, at 10 am. After that combined service, we will have a BBQ and picnic (hopefully outside). Bring a dish to share! Let’s be daring and leave it to chance. Make your favorite recipe for 8-10 people—salad, side dish, or dessert—you choose! Hot dogs, burgers, and beverages provided.

Welcome and Congratulations!

Welcome to Evelyn Cornelia, who became a member of Christ’s church through Baptism at last Sunday’s 9:00 am service. Evelyn was born on June 11 of this year, being welcomed not only by her parents but also her big brothers Mack and Bennett.

Also, congratulations to Annie and Kate Pearson. During last week’s service they renewed their vows (in the eyes of the Church) and (in the eyes of the State of Minnesota) were married.

September 3: Men’s Group

An invitation from Craig Turino:

I have been toying with the idea of a Men’s Group at St. Mary’s for many months and for many reasons.

First, I love the social aspect of church but there is only so much you can learn about a person from the “snapshot” conversations at coffee hour.

Second, we have a very strong female driven church and I am talking about more than just LeeAnne. It is one reason St. Mary’s is an ever growing church, has a warm and welcoming environment and does so much for the community but it inadvertently leaves the men looking for a place to land, unwind or belong. Hence, the Men’s Group.

But what does that look like? What are our goals? Do we even have goals? Can men get together and actually connect on a deeper level than the stereotypes of football and home improvement?

Enter Todd, Ben, Mike and Joe.

Thanks to the suggestion from my wife (one of the strong females I spoke of earlier), I

contacted the aforementioned men and we met to discuss all the questions I had of what it means to have a Men’s Group. After two meetings we came up with our mission statement.

The mission of the St. Mary’s Men’s Group is “to provide a safe, sincere and informal gathering for men to grow emotionally, spiritually and socially.” The meetings needed to feel safe and informal otherwise most of us guys would just clam up or fail to connect on a deeper level. That said there was lots of discussion about home theater systems, movies and beer. We also wanted to be clear that the group would be all inclusive and open to any man at St. Mary’s and would meet at a consistent time and place.

So...let me extend my invitation to all you guys at St. Mary’s to join me at O’Gara’s on the first Tuesday of every month at 8 pm. There is no agenda, no obligation and teetotalers are welcome. I hope to see you there.

Sept. 4 and 11: Safeguarding God’s People

Safe Church training (dealing with awareness and prevention of sexual exploitation and harassment) will be provided on two consecutive Wednesdays, September 4 and 11, from 6:30-8:00 pm.

The September 4 session will deal with Children and Youth Ministry. The September 11 session will deal with Adult Ministries. Both will be presented by Rex McKee in the St. Mary’s Room.

Who should take this training? Everyone is welcome to take it and many people are required to take it—church leaders; those

who work (paid or volunteer) with children and youth, even if it is only a few times per year; anyone with a key to the building. For details, consult the September issue of Fishtales or ask Rex. If you are required to take training, and it has been more than five years since you did so, you must take the it again.

Rex will also present this training at Gethsemane Episcopal Church in Minneapolis. The Safe Church Children and Youth Ministry will be on September 7 at 10:00 am and the Adult Ministry on October 5 at 10:00 am.

Coffee Hour Delights!

We’re back! It’s time to get back into familiar routines, and an important one at St. Mary’s is Coffee Hour.

We assign members to teams and once every eight weeks your team brings treats for the coffee hours after the 9:00

and 10:30 am services. We rotate leadership for the teams each time so no one has to do all the work all the time.

If you’re wondering when your team is on, go to saintmarysepiscopal.org. Click on the tab for “In the Neighborhood” then on “Coffee Hour Teams.” You will find a schedule through October 27, along with instructions for hosting, just in case you’re new to a team or you’ve been at the lake too long! The upcoming team is listed on the back of the bulletin, and there will always be the reminder via the church’s Constant Contact email account the week your team is up.

This is an important community-building ministry at St. Mary’s and a great way to meet new friends. So, dust off those baking pans or look for weekly specials in the store. Your contribution is key to the success of this ministry! Thank you!

Wondering about singing at St. Mary’s?

Have you considered joining the choir or music team, but feel self-conscious because you don’t know anyone? Here is the perfect chance to give it a try and meet some of these people yourself.

On Wednesday, September 11th we will meet for a potluck dinner at 6:30 pm and then join in preparing the music for our joint, all-parish service the following Sunday (Rally Day, Sept. 15th at 10:00 am.)

After working on the music for Rally Sunday, we will split into two groups—the Sunday 9:00 service music team and Sunday 10:30 service adult choir— to work on other music.

Join us in singing and making music for just this one Sunday, or stay and see what these music groups are all about. Bring a dish to share and meet some of your neighbors here at St. Mary’s—we’re a friendly bunch that enjoys the creative work that music provides. You are invited! —Bjorn and Conie

Choristers (Children’s Choir)

St. Mary’s children’s choir is known as Choristers. Choristers is designed for grade-school-aged singers.

Basic singing technique and musician skills are learned, using many styles of church music, and the choir presents music at Sunday services and special events throughout the academic year.

Special highlights this year include December Lessons and Carols, the opportunity to be part of the Episcopal Church in MN Youth Music Festival at the Cathedral, singing alongside other young choirs, and once again presenting a spring musical at St. Mary’s.

Our first rehearsal will be Wednesday, Oct. 23rd, from 6:00–6:45pm in the choir room. We rehearse at the same time most Wednesdays through April, observing the usual school breaks.

If your young person, or someone you know, may be interested in singing with us, have them come to the first rehearsal and try it out! For more details, speak with Bjorn or email him at musicdirector@ saintmarysepiscopal.org. You can register early by sending him a quick email including your singers name, age, and contact info for the family.
