It is very important to set the correcttemperature for storing food in theappliance. Micro-organisms will causefood which is not stored at the correct
temperature to deteriorate rapidly.Temperature influences the growth rateof these micro-organisms. Reducingthe temperature reduces their growthrate.
The temperature in the appliance willrise:
the more often the door is openedand the longer it is kept open,
the more food that is stored in theappliance,
the warmer the food is which is beingput into it,
the higher the ambient temperaturesurrounding the appliance.
The appliance is designed for use inspecific ambient temperatures(climate ranges). Do not use inambient temperatures for which it isnot designed.
. . . in the refrigerator and thePerfectFresh zone
We recommend a temperature of4 Cin the refrigerator.
The temperature in the PerfectFreshzone is controlled automatically, and ismaintained at0 to 3 C.
DynamicCooling
The DynamicCooling fan automaticallyswitches on when the cooling system
for the refrigerator switches on. Itdistributes the temperature in theappliance to all areas more evenly sothat all the food will be chilled to aboutthe same degree.
. . . in the freezer section
To freeze fresh food and to store frozen
food for a long time, a temperature of-18 Cis required. At this temperaturethe growth of micro-organisms isgenerally halted. As soon as thetemperature rises above -10 C, themicro-organisms become active in thefood again so that it cannot be kept aslong. For this reason, partially defrostedor defrosted food must not be re-frozen.
Food may be re-frozen once it hasbeen cooked, as the high temperaturesachieved when cooking destroy mostmicro-organisms.

Different storage zones
Due to the natural circulation of the airin the appliance, there are different
temperature zones in the refrigerator.Cold, heavy air sinks to the lowestsection of the appliance. Make use ofthe different zones when placing foodin the appliance.
This appliance has DynamicCooling, which helps to keep an even
temperature when the fan is running.
When DynamicCooling is switchedon, the difference between the
various zones is less pronounced.
Warmest area
The warmest area is in the top sectionof the door. Use this area for storingbutter and cheese.
Coldest area
The coldest area in the refrigerator isdirectly above the PerfectFresh zone. However, the PerfectFresh zone is evencolder.
Use these areas in the refrigerator andin the PerfectFresh zone for all delicate
and highly perishable food, e.g.
fish, meat, poultry,
sausage products, ready meals,
dishes or baked goods containingeggs or cream,
fresh dough, cake mixtures, pizza orquiche dough,
soft cheese and other dairyproducts,
pre-packed vegetables and otherfresh food with a label stating itshould be kept at a temperature ofapprox. 4 C.
Do not store explosive materials in
the appliance or any products
containing propellants (e.g. spray
cans).
Danger of explosion!
If storing alcohol with a high
percentage proof, make sure it istightly closed, and stored upright.
Do not store cooking oil in the
refrigerator door. Traces of oil cancause stress cracks to occur in the
plastic components in the door.
Food must not touch the back wall of
the refrigerator, as it may freeze tothe back wall.
To allow air to circulate efficiently,do not pack food too closely
together in the refrigerator. Do not
cover the fan in the rear wall of the
refrigerator, as this is essential for
keeping the appliance cool.

Food which should not bestored in a refrigerator
Not all food is suitable for refrigeration at
temperatures below 5 C. Cucumbers, for example, become glassy, eggplantsbitter and potatoes sweet. Tomatoesand oranges lose their aroma, and thepeel on citrus fruits hardens.
Foods which are sensitive to coldinclude:
Pineapples, avocados, bananas, pomegranates, mangoes, melons, papayas, passionfruit, citrus fruits such as lemons, oranges, mandarines, grapefruits
Fruit which is not yet ripe
Eggplants, cucumbers, potatoes,capiscum, tomatoes, zucchini
Some hard cheeses, e.g. Parmesan
When shopping for food
The freshness of food when first placedin the appliance is the most importantfactor in determining how long it staysfresh, and how long it can be kept in theappliance. Time out of the refrigerator,
e.g. during transportation, should bekept to a minimum. For example, do notallow food to stay in a hot car for toolong. Once food has started todeteriorate, this process cannot bereversed. As little as two hours outsidethe refrigerator can cause food to startdeteriorating.
Storing food correctly
Food should generally be storedcovered or packaged in the refrigerator
section (there are some exceptions tothis rule in the PerfectFresh zone - seebelow). This will prevent food smellsfrom affecting other foods, food fromdrying out, and also anycross-contamination of bacteria. Thegrowth of bacteria, such as salmonella, can be avoided by setting the correcttemperature and maintaining good
standards of hygiene.
Unpackaged meat and vegetables
Unpackaged meat and vegetablesshould be stored separately. To avoidany microbiologicalcross-contamination, these foods mayonly be stored together if they are
wrapped.

Food is stored in the PerfectFresh zoneat lower temperature than in theconventional refrigerator section. Thehumidity in the PerfectFresh zone can
be regulated to provide the correctconditions for food stored inside it.
Due to the optimum storage conditionscreated within the PerfectFresh zone, food remains fresh for longer, andflavour and vitamins are retained.
Storage temperature
The optimum storage temperature forfresh food which is not sensitive to thecold is 0 - 3 C. This is the temperaturerange which is automaticallymaintained in the PerfectFresh zone.Food can be stored the PerfectFreshzone at this temperature without loss offreshness for considerably longer than
in a standard refrigerator, as thedeterioration process is decelerated atthis temperature.
Remember that the initial freshness
of the food when placed in therefrigerator/PerfectFresh zone is
crucial for good storage results.
Humidity level
The humidity level in thePerfectFresh zone depends on:
moisture content of thestored food, and
the quantity of foodbeing stored.
The regulator can be used to adjust thehumidity level in the PerfectFresh zone.
The closer the storage humidity is to themoisture content of the food, the crisperand fresher the food remains over alonger period, as the water content of
the food is largely retained.
Storing food in thePerfectFresh zonecompartments
The PerfectFresh zone is divided intotwo areas, the dry compartment and
the humidity-controlled compartment.
The dry compartment
The dry compartment has a relativelylow humidity level that is approximatelythe same as that in the refrigerator. Therefore, the main advantage of thedry compartment is the lowtemperature, rather than the humidity.
The dry compartment is ideal forstoring particularly sensitive foods, such as fresh fish, shellfish, meat, poultry, sausages, dairy productsand salads.
Please note that foods rich in proteindeteriorate faster than others.Shellfish, for example, deterioratesfaster than fish, and fish deterioratesfaster than meat.
Using the PerfectFresh zone
27
8/10/2019 09308700
28/68
Always keep these foodscovered orwrapped.Exception: Meat(The surface of themeat dries out slightly, helping to
prevent the growth of bacteria, whichresults in the meat lasting longer. Toprevent the risk of bacterialcross-contamination and meatdeteriorating, do not let one type of meatcome into direct contact with anothertype.)
The humidity-controlled compartment
The humidity-controlled compartmenthas a regulator which is used to adjustthe relative humidity.
Slide the regulator to the relativehumidity level required:Setting.= high humidity. The regulatorcloses the openings to the compartment
and the humidity within is retained. Thehumidity depends heavily on the typeand quantity of food being stored.
Please take into account that highhumidity is only achieved and effective ifthe food is storedunwrapped orloosely wrapped.
The high humidity setting.is ideal
for storing freshly harvested productssuch as vegetables, salad, herbs, mushrooms and home-grownseasonal fruit.
Setting ,= low humidity. The regulator opens the openings tothe compartment and the air within isable to escape.
If the regulator is set to low humidity ,,this approximates the humidity level inthe refrigerator section. The mainadvantage with this setting is the lowtemperature, rather than the humidity.
At the low humidity setting, theatmosphere inside thehumidity-controlled compartment is
the same as in the dry compartment.
Take food out of the PerfectFresh
zone approx. 30 - 60 minutes before
using it. The aroma and taste do not
fully develop until the food hasreached room temperature.
Can all types of food be storedtogether?
Do not place all types of food togetherin one drawer. Some types of food donot store well together. Aromas andflavours can transfer from one type offood to another (e.g. carrots absorb thesmell and flavour of onions very easily). Some food also gives off a natural gas
(ethylene) which speeds up the rate atwhich other food perishes.
Using the PerfectFresh zone
28

29/68
Examples of fruit and vegetables
which produce a large amount of this
natural gas are:
Apples, apricots, pears, nectarines, peaches, plums, avocados, figs, blueberries, melons and beans.
Examples of fruit and vegetables
which react strongly to the natural
gases given off by other types of fruit
and vegetables are:
Kiwis, broccoli, cauliflower, Brusselssprouts, mangos, honeydew melons, apples, apricots, cucumbers, tomatoes, pears, nectarines and peaches.
Example: Broccoli should not be storedwith apples, as apples produce a largeamount of natural gas to which broccoliis very sensitive. The result is a shorterthan expected storage time for the
broccoli.

If you are not satisfied with the results of your stored food (e.g. food loses
firmness and wilts shortly after placing in the appliance), keep in mind the
following instructions:
^ Only place fresh food in the appliance as the initial condition of the food iscrucial to maintaining freshness.
^ Clean the PerfectFresh zone before storing food in it.
^ Dry the surface of very moist food before placing it in the PerfectFresh zone.
^ Do not store any food in the PerfectFresh zone which is sensitive to cold(see "Food which should not be stored in a refrigerator").
^ Please note that not all types of food can be stored together (see "Can all types
of food be stored together?").
^ Select the correct PerfectFresh compartment according to the type of foodbeing stored (high or low humidity level).
^ Store food with a high moisture content unwrapped in the PerfectFresh zone.A high humidity level will be achieved by means of the moisture alreadycontained with the food being stored. If the humidity level is not high enough (e.g. too little food is being stored), it canbe increased by placing a damp sponge in the drawer.
^ If you think that the temperature in the PerfectFresh zone is not correct, tryingadjusting it slightly by 1 to 2 C via the refrigerator section temperature control. To avoid frost damage to food, a higher temperature must be set if ice crystalsbegin to form on the bottom of the PerfectFresh zone.
^ If too much water collects at the bottom of the PerfectFresh zone, dry it with acloth. If necessary, dry food before placing it in the appliance or place a rack atthe bottom of the PerfectFresh zone to allow water to drain off.

Moving the shelves
The shelves can be adjusted accordingto the height of the food:
^ Raise the shelf, and pull it forwardsslightly until the notch at the side is inline with the shelf support. It can thenbe raised or lowered to the requiredlevel.
The raised edge at the back must faceupwards to prevent food from touchingthe back of the appliance and freezing
to it.
Stoppers prevent the shelves frombeing dislodged by mistake.
Split shelf
In order to accommodate tall items inthe appliance, one of the shelves is
divided. The front section can bepushed under the rear section.
^ Lightly push the rear glass shelf fromunderneath.
^ Pull the front half of the glass shelfforwards slightly and then push itcarefully under the rear half.
To move the split shelf:
^ Take both halves of the split glassshelf out,
^ fit the two brackets onto the supportson either side at the required height,
^ and push the glass shelves in oneafter the other. The shelf with the raised edge mustbe at the back.

Maximum freezing capacity
To ensure that fresh food placed in thefreezer freezes through to the core as
quickly as possible, the maximumfreezing capacity must not beexceeded. The maximum freezingcapacity for freezing within a 24-hourperiod is given on the data plate:"Freezing capacity ....kg/24 hrs".
Freezing fresh food
Fresh food should be frozen as quicklyas possible. This way the nutritionalvalue of the food, its vitamin content, appearance and taste are not impaired.
Food which takes a long time to freezewill lose more water from its cells, whichthen shrink.During the defrosting process, only
some of this water is reabsorbed by thecells; the rest collects around the food.
If food is frozen quickly, the cells haveless time to lose moisture, so theyshrink less. As there is not so muchmoisture loss, it is easier for the food toreabsorb it during the defrostingprocess, and very little water collectsaround the defrosted food.
Storing frozen food
When buying frozen food to store inyour freezer, check
that the packaging is not damaged,
the use-by date,
the temperature at which the frozenfood is being stored in the shop. Thelength of time it can be kept isreduced if it has been stored at atemperature warmer than -18 C.
^ Buy frozen food once you havefinished the rest of your shopping, and wrap it in newspaper or use acool bag or cool box to transport it.
^ Store it in the freezer as soon aspossible.
Never re-freeze partially or fully
defrosted food. Consume defrostedfood as soon as possible as it will
lose its nutritional value and spoil if
left for too long. Defrosted food may
only be re-frozen after it has been
cooked.

Hints on home freezing
The following types of foodaresuitablefor freezing:Fresh meat, poultry, game, fish, vegetables, herbs, fresh fruit, dairyproducts, pastry, leftovers, eggyolks, egg whites and a range of
pre-cooked meals. The following types of foodare not
suitablefor freezing:Grapes, lettuce, radishes, sourcream, mayonnaise, eggs in theirshells, onions, whole raw apples andpears.
To retain colour, taste and vitamin C,
vegetables should be blanched afterthey have been trimmed andwashed. To blanch: Bring a large saucepan ofwater to the boil, immerse thevegetables in the fast boiling waterfor 2-3 minutes, depending onvariety. Remove, and plunge intoice-cold water to cool quickly. Drain
and pack ready for freezing.
Lean meat freezes better than fattymeat, and can be stored forconsiderably longer.
To prevent chops, steaks, cutlets orrolled meat from freezing together insolid blocks when packed, separatewith a sheet of plastic freezer film.
Do not season fresh foods orblanched vegetables beforefreezing. Only season cooked foodlightly before freezing, but careshould be taken as the taste of somespices alters when frozen.
Do not place hot foods or drinks inthe freezer. This causes alreadyfrozen food to thaw, and increasesthe energy consumptionconsiderably. Allow hot foods anddrinks to cool down before placing
them in the freezer.
Packing
^ Freeze food in portions.
Unsuitable packing material- wrapping paper- grease-proof paper
- cellophane- bin bags- plastic carrier bags
Suitable packing material- plastic freezer film- freezer bags- aluminium foil- freezer containers
^ Expel as much air as possible frombags etc. before sealing them, toprevent freezer-burn on food.
^ Close the packaging tightly with- rubber bands- plastic clips- string or bag ties- freezer tape.
Freezer bags may also be sealedusing home heat sealing kits.

^ Make a note of the contents and thedate of freezing on the packaging.
Before placing food in the freezer
^ When freezing more than 2 kg offresh food, switch on theSuperFreeze function for some timebefore placing the food in the freezer(see "SuperFreeze").This also helps to prevent food that isalready in the freezer from starting todefrost.
Placing food in the freezer
The following maximum load
capacities need to be adhered to:
Freezer drawer = 25 kg Glass plate = 35 kg
Make sure that food already frozen
does not come into contact withfresh food being frozen as this could
cause the frozen food to begin to
defrost.
^ Make sure that the packaging andcontainers are dry to prevent themsticking together when frozen.
Freezing small items
Place small items in the upper freezerdrawers.
^ Place the food flat at the bottom ofthe drawers so that it freezes throughto the core as quickly as possible.
When removing freezer drawers,
please note:
The lowest freezer drawer must
always remain in the appliance.Place the food on the glass plate so
that the ventilation slits in the backwall of the appliance are not
blocked. They are important for
trouble-free operation of the
appliance and maintaining normal
energy consumption.
Freezing the maximum quantity offood (see data plate)
^ Take out the bottom freezer drawer.
^ Place the food flat on the upper glassplates so that it freezes through to thecore as quickly as possible.
At the end of the freezing process:
^ Place the frozen food in the freezerdrawer and push it back into theappliance.
Freezing large items
If you wish to freeze large items suchas a turkey or game, the glass coldplates between the drawers can be
removed. To do this:^ Remove the upper freezer drawers
and carefully lift and slide out theglass cold plates.

Freezer calendar
The freezer calendar on the freezerdrawer gives the length of time in
months which various foods can bestored for effectively.
Where the storage time given on thepackaging differs, follow the advice onthe packaging.
2-3 months:Cakes, ice cream, stews
3-5 months:Fish, mushrooms, bread
6-8 months:Pork, veal, poultry
10-12 months:Beef, fruit, vegetables
Defrosting
Frozen food can be defrosted indifferent ways:
in a microwave oven,
in an oven using the "Fan" or"Defrost" setting,
at room temperature,
in the refrigerator (the cold given offby the frozen food helps to keep the
other food cold), in a steam oven.
PoultryIt is particularly important toobserve food hygiene rules whendefrosting poultry. Do not use the liquidfrom defrosted poultry. Pour it awayand wash the container it was in, thesink and your hands. Danger ofsalmonella poisoning.
Pieces of meat and fish(e.g. mince, chicken, fish fillet) should not come intocontact with other food whendefrosting. Collect the water from thedefrosted meat or fish and dispose of it
carefully.
Fruitshould be defrosted at roomtemperature in its packaging, or in acovered bowl.
Most vegetablescan be cooked whilestill frozen. Just put straight into boilingwater or hot fat. The cooking time isslightly less than that of freshvegetables due to changes in the cellstructure.
Never re-freeze partially or fully
defrosted food. Consume defrosted
food as soon as possible as it will
lose its nutritional value and spoil if

^ Fill the ice tray three quarters full withwater and place it on the bottom ofone of the freezer drawers.
^ Once frozen, use a blunt instrument, for example a spoon handle, toremove the ice tray from the freezer.
^ Ice cubes can be removed easilyfrom the tray by twisting the traygently or by holding it under coldrunning water for a short while.
Cooling drinks
To cool drinks quickly, place them inthe refrigerator section, and switch onthe SuperCool function.
Do not store cans or bottles containingcarbonated drinks or liquids whichcould freeze in the freezer section. Thecans or bottles could explode.
When cooling drinks (onlynon-carbonated) quickly, make surebottles arenot left in the freezersection for more than one hour, asthey could burst.
Cool pack
The cool pack prevents thetemperature in the freezer rising too
quickly in the event of a power cut.
Place the cool pack in the top drawer ofthe freezer section, directly on top ofthe food. The cool pack will be at itsmost effective after it has been in thefreezer for approx. 24 hours.
If there is a power cut, place the coolpack directly on top of the frozen food
in the top drawer so that the food willbe kept cold for as long as possible.
When placing fresh food in the freezer, use the cool pack to separate the freshfood from the food which is alreadyfrozen so that the frozen food does notbegin to thaw.
The cool pack can also be used in acool bag to keep food or drinks cool fora short period of time.

switches off after approx. 6 hours.
^ Check that the appliance doors areclosed properly.
^ Has a large amount of fresh foodbeen put in at the same time forfreezing? This makes the compressor run forlonger, causing the temperature to
fall automatically.
. . . the door will not open because it
has been opened and closed too
many times in succession.
^ This is not a fault. The suction causedby opening and closing the door ispreventing the door from opening.
Wait a few minutes and then tryagain. It should now open withoutforce.
