This Happy Breed

No Protest SongsFor Sam & Pharaohs

BY DAVE FINKLENEW YORK-When MGM's

Sam the Sham and the Phar-aohs travel on land, they goin a big hearse rigged up toaccommodate more than theusual one passenger. Littlesecret compartments are builtinto the blue velvet lined wallswhere Sam can reach in to getrefreshments or maracas.

It was into this hearse thatRecord World glided last weekto talk to Sam the Sham andthe P's just as they arrivedin New York (JFK Airport)for some promo appearancesand TV tapings. The groupwas extremely excited aboutreturning to the City for whatwas only their second triphere, and the excitement wascompounded by their baskingin the glory of the sales re-cord on their first MGM single,"Wooly Bully," which MGMexecs tell them is the biggestlabel single of the year. (WhenMGM has its sales conveneat the Concord soon, Sam theS and the P's will be thereto receive their gold disk.)Their current "Ju Ju Hand" is50 on this week's chart.

As the boys-Sam (who isbearded and beturbaned anda little older than the others),Jerry, Ray, David and Butch-rode in, they clowned a bitand returned looks with pas-sengers in other cars whoregistered various degrees ofalarm at seeing five brightlyshirted, long haired fellowsriding in the back of a hearse.Their clowning prompted thequestion whether they includedcomedy in their act.

NARA NixesViolence

Ed Wright, President ofNARA (National Associationof Radio Announcers), an-nounced last week, "The mem-bership of NARA is concernedover the release of a text pub-lished in a letter from the WestCoast advising R & B diskjockeys to take up the theme`Burn Baby Burn' to persuadetheir listeners to duplicate thetragic events that took placein Los Angeles during the re-cent racial disturbances."

Wright went on, "The mem-bers of NARA are responsible

(Continued on page 5)

"Usually more off stage thanon," David said. "We're moreserious on stage," chimedJerry.

Blue But BeamingDid that mean that the boys

might be joining the ranks ofthe protest singers? "No," Samsaid. "We're really a happygroup. And we're going to goon being happy."

"But," Ray continued, "bluesplays a big part in our music."

The fellows had just playeda lot of their music at aMemphis concert the night be-fore. It was reported that thegroup had broken Herman'sHermits records there. Hadthey? "Well," Jerry said, "Yes.We had a Herman's Hermitrecord and we broke it."

Why had the fellows chosentheir name? "We couldn'tthink of anybody else calledThe Pharaohs," Sam said."Even though it took us twoyears to learn how to spell it."

It does seem remote that agroup that boasts two membersfrom Dallas (Sam is one ofthem) and three from Memphisshould turn to Egypt for theirmoniker, but that's show biz.

The future has a lot in storefor the fellows. They're veryenthusiastic about their nextsingle, "Ring Dang Doo,"which makes the scene Sept.13. And their first movie, theConnie Francis "Girl Crazy"remake, will soon be released.A trip abroad is planned fornear the end of the year. Andone -niters galore will probablycrop up before then.

PICK HITSFuuuununumnnmmniunumnunnnnnnnnnmumnununununnmimmmmuumuunumim®

MY WORLDEDDY ARNOLD-RCA Victor LPM 3466;

LSP 3466.He makes it all sound so easy, so ef-

fortless. Fans will line up to get thisbeautiful album. But what less can beexpected when Eddy, Chet Atkins, BillWalker and chorus get together for apackage. "Too Many Rivers," "AsUsual" and "You Still Got a Hold onMe" are here.

THAT'S MY STYLEJOHNNY TILLOTSON-MGM E/SE 4302.

Easy-going, gentle are the hallmarksof the style. The lad is aided on thetunes by the Jordanaires or the AnitaKerr Singers which means that theflavor is countrified. "Heartaches bythe Number," "Then I'll Count Again,""Things," "The Race is On" and morewill attract the listener.

Pilfg-TfigieIhrtl u

HELP!GEORGE MARTIN-United Artists UAL 3448; UAS 6448.

The word "genius" gets thrownaround a lot; so it might not meanmuch to say that George Martin isone. But he is. It is he who is prob-ably almost as responsible for theBeatle success as the boys themselves. His arrangements of the songs havebeen boosters to skyrockets. He does"Help!" his jazzy way and rendersfunk to "Ticket to Ride." Gear disk.

MOON OVER NAPLESBILLY VAUGHN-Dot DLP 3654; DLP 26654.

The songs here are all standards-some newer than others. And Billyaccords them the Vaughn arrange-ments, which always has the ring ofthe standard. "A Walk in the BlackForest," "Red Roses for a Blue Lady,""Please" and "Goldfinger" get thegolden touch. A certain seller.

CAROUSELLINCOLN CENTER ORIGINAL CAST-RCA Victor LOC 1114; LSO 1114.

The hard-hearted say that "Carousel"is too sentimental. And they're right, but the music is divine. And here itis conducted by Broadway's perfec-tionist, Franz Allers, who includesmore than the usual amount of theshow's score. John Raitt continueswith undiminished powers. He is sup-ported by Eileen Christy, Susan Wat-son, Katherine Hilgenberg, Jerry Or-bach and Reid Shelton. Never better.

REVIEWSMOONLIGHT AND ROSES

'4C DANA-Dolton BLP 2036; SDT 8036.Nobody who likes a little nostalgia

could possibly balk at the selectionson this disk. Vic joins his chorusagain for mellow versions of "Moon-light and Roses," "What'll I Do,""Don't Take Your Love From Me,""That Old Feeling" and other memoryprodders. The formula works oncemore for the lad.

THE KING FAMILY ALBUMWarner Bros. W(S) 1613.

Every apple on this family treebarely fell at all. And here they areall singing their cores out on a col-lection of group sing songs. Thisgrooved monument to togetherness has"He's Got the Whole World in HisHands," "Shenandoah," "America theBeautiful" and others. Lots of cap-tioned photos too.

MEEHAN'S INDANNY MEEHAN-Mercury MG 21043; SR 61043.

People often refer to artists likeDanny Meehan as "special." And theword applies. He's special all right. They also say "singer's singer." Andhe's that too. He has an emotionalvoice that can move to tears and pro-voke to laughter. He's a performer. And he deserves stardom. "She LovesMe," "Where I Belong," "It Was MyFather's Fashion." Terrific disk debut.

AMONG THE STARSRENEE RAFF-Audio Fidelity AFLP 2142.

A new girl to get extremely ex-cited about. She has a voice of deeppile texture and an ever so effortlessapproach to a song. She also has acompletely individual sound. She sings"Mad About the Boy," "Willow Weepfor Me" and some delightful new ones."Starting Tomorrow," "Butterfly withHiccups." And she's awfully prettyto boot.

IN ONE HEAD AND OUT THE OTHER(THE NEW EMERGING BIGOT)

JACK BURNS AND AVERY SCHREIBER-Columbia CL 2370; CS 9170.

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em (ina manner of speaking). At least that'sthe way this new comedy team getstheir laughs in. And they also getin some incisive observation aboutbigotry.

THE MOMENT OF TRUTHSOUNDTRACK-Mainstream 56057; S/6057.

The movie this music underscores isa semi -biographical, semi -fictional storyof a bullfighter. Infused in it are thereligion and passion of the Spanishlife. Highlighted is the barbarism andbeauty of the bullring. The musicbrings out these facets movingly. PieroPiccioni did his work well.

WHERE IT'S ATBY KAL RUDMAN

FLASH: Soul Brother Chuck Leonard has been hired asa Top 30 pop jock by WABC, NYC. He was at WWRL, NYC,and I hear that he will follow "Cousin" Bruce Morrow atnight. This is an important breakthrough, and it is obviouslytime for Soul Brothers who feel they can cut it on formatpop stations, and have the desire to work on one, to submittrack records, tapes, etc., and win some of these good jobs.A while back Reggie LeVong quietly joined NBC's WRCV in

Philadelphia (now Westinghouse's KYW) asa middle-of-the-road music jockey. However,KYW is now going all -news, and I don'tknow what Reggie's plans are.

I'll say this much: Some of the big popjocks on some big stations sound like TonyRandall doing his satirical impression of adj on TV's Hollywood Palace." And I havenever heard better production, format orswingin' jocks anywhere than our friendsat WABQ, Cleveland -Ed Wright, Les An-

derson and Wash Allan. Eddie makes many pop jocks soundlike babies, and he built and created all the "Sound" atWABQ himself. Of course, most R&B jocks would rather play"soul" and you can't hardly blame them.

I read in Behind the Scenes that Jack Mindy, WTRX, Flint, was amazed that the Ramsey Lewis hit #1 in his Pop Top30. Why are you shocked to learn your listeners have soul,Jack? Ask yourself why you're not playing other R&B smasheslike maybe the Wilson Pickett, Billy Stewart, Joe Tex orContours instead of some of those antiseptic, bubble -gum"paddy" sounds, and then make your station and listenerscome alive. As Chuck Jackson sez to Maxine Brown (in theirLP cut, "Please Don't Hurt Me")-"Baby, I'm gonna showYOU how to LIVE!" . . . The Joe Tex has already hit #1in many markets; "Soul Heaven" has exploded big all over;and the 0. V. Wright is now a sales giant in the North andall over. This "sleeper" reaches the people and moves themsomehow . . . The San Remo Strings just "busts" whereverit's played, now in Philadelphia, Cleveland and Chicago, etc.. . . Jimmy Bishop reports the Contours #1 in Philadelphia. It's also top 5 pop. It was our R&B tip in Gavin Reports whenit came out . . . Jerry Wexler has signed Patti & the Blue -belles plus Ted Taylor. Joe Tex is going #1 R&B . . . "C. C.

Rider," Bobby Powell, WHIT, a solid hit in New Orleans andShreveport and is Stan Lewis of Stan's Record Shop thrilled.. . . There's a record out there that I just can't understand:"Candy," Astors, Stax. Ed Wright found it and took it to#1 at WABQ, Cleveland. Then WDAS and WIBG, Philadelphiawent on it and over 35,000 were sold. Then Dallas broke itpop and R&B, and now it has busted pop in Chicago off WLS,and is charted at #8 at WBEE, the Rollins R&B station inChicago. Tell me, doesn't anyone want to play & break asplash? ... Congratulations to the A&R staff at Chess Records(guys like Billy Davis, Phil Wright, Renard Miner, CarlSmith, Gene "Daddy G" Barge, "Long Gone" Thompson forthe sensational product they are turning out. The new BillyStewart, "How Nice It Is," is an automatic winner and dittofor: "Rescue Me" and Soul of the Man," Fontella Bass; "ForMy Man," Mitty Collier and, contrary to play on the otherside, the hit side of the Little Milton is "Help Me, Help You". . . Congratulations to arranger Allan Toussaint, writerNaomi Neville and promoter Marshall Seahorn for a sensa-tional job on "What a Sad Feeling," Betty Harris, Sansu . . .

There is no question that "In the Midnight Hour," WilsonPickett, is a pop hit where played as already proven in Phila-delphia, NYC, Atlanta, St. Louis, Hartford, Baltimore -Wash-ington. Other R&B hits showing Pop Hit action (as listedin the Bill Gaven Report) are: "Help Me," Little Milton (NYC,

KAL RUDMAN'S

Pop BeatWalkers Wow Blighty!

Charlie Fach of Smash reports a hot story to yours truly:An American group called the Walker Brothers pulled areverse -switch on England, let their hair grow long, went overthere and have wiped the country OUT! Their recording ofBert Bachrach -Hal David's "Make It Easy On Yourself" (done byDionne Warwick here) hit the charts there at #1. It's donewith a 30 -piece orchestra.

They are big, husky, rough -looking guys whom those hipBritish kids dig, and even more important they are greatlive performers. (A big American group that had a #1 rec-ord here just bombed in England because of bad performance.)The Walker Brothers are having their clothes torn off, and thewhole bit. Sales are 12,000 a day which is great there. Whenthe record hits its peak there, Smash will release it State-side. So import your copy now!

British kids are even more hip than California kids, sincebuying a record is a major investment, and they know thenames of the arrangers, producers, writers, etc. It's no gamewith them. Of course, the hippest listeners of all in this

Scountry are the R&B people. Those kids don't shuck andjive!

The Walker BrothersSmash Records has a breakout on "The Sun Ain't Gonna

Shine Anymore," Frankie Valli, in Buffalo, Hartford and theNortheast . . . Top Bust -Out of the Week is "Love's Concerto,"Toys, Dyno Voice, which is a giant in Philadelphia off WIBGand is breaking in San Francisco, L.A., etc. . . . "You're TheOne," Vogues, Co & Ce, is breaking and spreading every-where after Pittsburgh . . . Jerry Wexler, Exec VP and Gen-eral Manager of Atlantic/Atco, tells me that "Laugh AtMe," Sonny, is a Giant in sales. You would not believe thesales on the Sonny & Cher LP. They are like the Beatles.Ask Jerry to send you his old LP of "This Is My Beloved"(from the famous book) and play it for your girl (or evenyour wife) . . . Stevie Wonder and Joan Baez both have solidhits. So could you define rock & roll on a TV panel show?. . . "If You've Got Heart," Bobby Goldsboro, U.A., sellingin the South and Mid -West . . . "I Live For The Sun," Sunrays,Tower, broke for a solid hit . . . "A Taste of Honey," HerbAlpert, A&M, is breaking all over the place. Class will tell!. . . "Respect," Otis Redding, Volt, is breaking pop in manyareas. Pop PD's are learning that Otis is an artist for adultswho just happens to use a musical form called R&B ratherthan, say, country. His lyrics are sophisticated and meaning-ful to mature minds-the people who buy the cars, not thekids who steal the hub -caps. Same true for Chuck Jackson.

CLEAR FROM THE COASTBY NORMAN GREER & EDDIE KAFAFIAN

HOLLYWOOD - KHJ Radio's audience rating may dropquicker than it soared because of a soaring helicopter that be-came a very sore spot with teens attending the KRLA spon-sored Beatles concerts here in Hollywood Bowl.

Someone in KHJ's promo department thought it was a wildidea to hire a chopper, send it over the Bowl and have theelectronic sign board spell out "KHJ Welcomes The Beatles toL.A." They didn't realize that the whirlybird would make THATmuch noise and the kids couldn't hear any of the acts on stage. We spoke, personally, to more than a dozen teens who alsosaid they were miffed that KHJ would try to cash -in on KRLA'sconcert. On the surface it may seem small, but it's no tempestin a teapot when the kids start vowing they'll never again listento KHJ.

Ulsyra also will produce for Mercury all Mendelsohn's organmusic with Frederick Swann playing.

Although he couldn't talk just now and at least not untilnext week, Minucci hinted that there was very big news com-ing from Ulsyra concerning new arists and possibly a newlabel. A few pending contract signings stand between nowand the announcements.

The composer-A&R man disclosed that major labels weredickering for the recording rights to "The Saga of WesternMan." He wouldn't say which, however-only that ABC-TVwanted to insure deluxe packaging for the series when re-corded.

Yes, I have been missing fortwo weeks, and I hope you'll ac-cept my apologies. I had to flyto Australia at a moment's no-tice because of a family bereave-ment. It was my dear old "Mum"who, believe it or not, was amost enthusiastic "Pop Fan"and reader of Record World. AndI think that on many occasionsshe could have told many a teen-ager exactly where Bob Dylan,The Beatles, The Kinks, GenePitney, Petula Clark and TheRolling Stones were placed inthe charts on both sides of theAtlantic!

Actually, pop music's ratherAlan Freeman wonderful, and at this stage of

1965 no one can, in truth, deny its existence or the fact that it'sas much a part of so many individuals' lives as is breath itself. And, you know, for some strange reason, many of those sameindividuals will deny it to the world and even start believingthat they are looking in the mirror and seeing the truth! We'rea strange lot, aren't you?

Anyway, on my return from Australia, I decided that I'd spenda few days on the Northern coast of France with my manager,Bunny Lewis and his family. To be more precise, we traveled toBrittany, and I can promise you that if my French in Paris isconsidered a disaster, then in Brittany it could only be describeda revolting flop!

Ah, but then we come upon the subject of food, and, as in New

York, London or anywhere you care to name (don't mentionTokyo and make yourself unpopular with me), my appetite wasunderstood everywhere I opened my mouth. Each day Bunnylooked at me, went quite pale and kept asking, "What wouldyou do if you had to retire from show business?"

By strange coincidence, we visited the family's relations in atown called Lesneven, and on being taken to a cute balcony atthe top of a winding staircase, Bunny told me that it was onthis same balcony some 11 or 12 years ago that he wrote "CaraMia," and when I asked him how the inspiration came, he said,"I could smell smoked sausage!"

Koppelman - Rubin Electronic Music Next Trend? In Mercury Deal

Could Be, Says Garry ShermanBY DOUG McCLELLANDNEW YORK - Arranger -con-

ductor Garry Sherman thinkshe may have the answer to thatperpetually pertinent recordworld question: what will thenext trend in popular music be?Electronic music, he suggests.

And since Sherman's talentshave contributed over the pastthree years to records with salesof about 10,000,000 copies (mostrecently, Gene Pitney's "LookingThrough the Eyes of Love"), heis a man to listen to. Which isjust what Record World didlast week, in Sherman's Man-hattan apartment (from whichhe does most of his work, mir-aculously-he has four smallsons).

Sherman recently composedand scored his first film, SevenArts' "Shadow of Evil," aFrench -made picture with PierAngeli and Kerwin Matthews. He used electronic music withan orchestra, however.

"They wanted me to do it inFrance," he said, "but I'm anidealist: I didn't want to takethe work out of the U.S. Thepicture is a James Bond typething and takes place in theOrient, so it was a natural forelectronic music.

"Although I think this kindof music will be utilized com-mercially, I don't think it willreplace live musicians. I avoidthat. I use electronic music asan extension of the orchestra. If I use an instrument insteadof strings, it's because it's moresuitable. It'll ultimately be like, say, the electronic piano-justanother instrument."

Providing they can add to theemotional impact, Sherman feelsthese still rather avant gardesounds will eventually play avital role in the success of popmusic.

On the Hit Song, Shermansays: "The key factor is, ofcourse, a good song and inter-esting lyrics. The song itselfdetermines the direction of thearrangement with a close col-laboration between the artist, the producer and the arrangerbeing essential. Ideally, a pro-ducer allows the arranger un-limited scope, the only limitationbeing what the artist can handle. As far as the record -buyingkids are concerned, they're great-they have no prejudgments:they like the new, the experi-mental."

trist until he realized music wasfor him, said he first becameinterested in electronic Musicabout three years ago. Basicallya self-taugh musician, aboutthat time he began to wonderjust what formal music trainingwas all about and while satisfy-ing this quest at Columbia'scollege of musical knowledge,he noted that Vladimir Ussa-ohevsky was teaching a coursein electronic music there. Hesigned up. Pretty soon he wasusing the machines around onea.m. for his studies-Ussachev-sky himself, as well as otherstudents, were taking advantageof them during earlier hours.

"I decided that with my fam-ily I couldn't go on doing this,"he recalled. "So early in '64 Istarted my own lab here athome."

Sherman says he learned agreat deal with Ussachevsky, and could use certain of the"designs" his instructor gavehim to turn out hit records."But I won't," he vowed. "Ipromised Ussachevsky I wouldn't.I use them in studios, but Ilimit them. There are purelycommercial guys around whowill eventually start using thesounds, and then I will followsuit-not copying them; I haveplenty of my own sounds."

Meanwhile, Sherman, an EpicRecords artist, also producesa few sides a year "for kicks, but it's so time-consuming. AndI want to stay as creative, asartistic as I can." To the latterend he is currently composingthe music (electronic) for a filmshort subject on New York, aswell as arranging and conduct-ing upcoming sessions for suchartists as Irene Reid, the Vac-els, Kai Winding, Gene Pitney,

Damita Jo and-a new groupcomprised of three girls whocall themselves the Boys, a featSherman assures is not accom-plished electronically.

Concert Review

Nardello DelightsAt Cherry HillCHERRY HILL, N.J.-Play-

ing to capacity crowds for threenights (Aug. 25, 26, 27) at "theworld's largest enclosed shop-ping center," the Cherry HillMall, George Nardello, alto, tenor and bari saxist, waspresented in a concert aptlytitled "Inventive Jazz Show-case."

Twenty -seven -year -old Nar-dello, a schooled classical mu-sician as well, proved to be oneof the most exciting new jazzartists in some time. He sur-rounded himself with a bigband sound that comprised twotrumpets, one trombone, twosaxes and four rhythm, a crackgroup of musicians to scare themost rehearsed band in thecountry with their precision.

One was reminded of the ex-citement created by the Benny

Goodman band in the "goodold days," though the referenceis not made to compare thetype of sounds-Nardello isdefinitely of the contemporaryfield if not a little ahead of it.Nardello featured a trio duringthe middle of the concert whichshowed his ability to performunder all circumstances.

Nardello, who records forCherry Hill Records, is thegenius behind all the arrange-ments, and their sound is fresh, clean, understandable and ex-citing. Cherry Hill is releasingseveral LPs of both the bigband sound and the trio withinthe next several weeks whichare bound to have a tremendousacceptance. This writer, how-ever, wishes he could have arecording of the live concertattended because the audiencecomprised a complete spectrumof six to 60 that was enter-tained and appreciative.

George Nardello is definitelya new star, and colleges wouldbe wise to make advance datesfor this group.

TV Dancing Causes HullabalooIn our opinion critics who condemn the exuberant dancing on

NBC's "Hullabaloo" and ABC's "Shindig" as "just so muchtasteless rock and roll trash" are merely showing their culturalignorance.

Broadway genius Jerome Robbins (director and choreographerof such all-time hit musicals as "West Side Story" and "FiddlerOn The Roof") is the guiding inspirational force behind bothshows' choreography.

Both of the programs' choreographers (David Winters for"Hullabaloo" and Andre Tayir for "Shindig") are ardent dis-

ciples of Robbins' distinctive jazz ballet style, and both dancers were in the stage and filmversions of "West Side Story."

The latest blast against today's dancing wasmade by Dr. Calvin Seerveld, Chicago TrinityCollege and Divinity philosophy professor."You should not tease in public with what youcannot pay off in private," Dr. Seerveld tolda young Calvinist convention recently. "You

June Bundy must ask yourselves how does frugging helpmy faith?" The doctor also labeled the bouncy

Beatles' "A Hard Day's Night" a "dark frenzy which capturespowers beyond the realm of godliness."

Lada Edmund Jr., the 18 -year -old blonde beauty who dancesin the cage on "Hullabaloo," has nothing but scorn for thosewho want to censor the dancing on her show.

"The dances are no wilder or sexier than dances of the past,"insists Lada. "I get positively bugged when people call ourdances dirty. Sure, the stuff I do is pretty wild, but it's attractiveand it's fun."

David Winters' answer to carping critics is "That's theirlem. Evil is in the eye of the beholder. Adults are doing thesame dances now in the clubs. Maybe it's just the shock of seeingit on the TV screen."

Meanwhile, if the critics of today's TV choreography continueto harrass the rock, one network producer threatens to silencethem by running a few film clips, circa the dance scene of thelate '30s and '40s. "I've yet to see one of today's frugging teen-agers approach the over -the -shoulder -judo -like -combat routinesof the jitterbug era," is his sardonic comment.

AROUND THE DIAL: The Kingston Trio is making its dra-matic debut on the new "Convoy" TV show this fall. . . . Wewere impressed with movie actor George Hamilton's conversa-tional charm and wit on Mery Griffin's late -night show last week.Hamilton did lip -sync vocals for his film biography of the lateHank Williams, but he'll do his own singing on his first abumfor ABC -Paramount Records. It's interesting to note that ABC-Paramount's very first hit, "A Rose and a Baby Ruth," was byanother George Hamilton (the III.)

Chad and Jeremy have temporarily split while Jeremy Clydeappears in a London Stage musical. Meanwhile, Chad Stuart isteaming up with his beautiful model wife Jill. They'll maketheir first U.S. TV appearance on the opening fall telecast ofABC's "Shindig," Sept. 16. . . . When deejay Larry McCormick,KFWB, Hollywood, interviewed Barry McGuire on "Teen Topics"Sunday, the latter was a bit startled to discover that the dis-cussion theme was titled "Did the controversial (Barry hit)record 'Eve of Destruction' contribute to the Los Angeles riots?"

It seems that even snakes wiggle when they hear the beat,a fact that may or may not be used as ammunition by thosewho knock the rock. At any rate oil workers plagued by snakesstaged a rock -gospel concert, complete with guitars, out inAvenal, Calif., last week to lure rattlesnakes out of their lairs. And what a parable Dr. Seerveld could make out of the factthat Avenal is near Apple Valley.

Nice to hear from Charlie Murdock, General Manager of WSAI,Cincinnati, Ohio. Charlie, whom we first knew as Program Di-rector of WQAM, Miami, Fla., is launching "Rocket Radio" (anew sound format for WSAI) with a "Blast Off" promotionaldrive.

Garnett & Three, Bitter End WowsNEW YORK-Gale Garnett,

an engaging entertainer whosesongs whether happy or sadusually depict the plight of thegirl loner, bowed at the BitterEnd last week and confirmedimpressions gathered from herrecords. She's an unusually wiseand perceptive young girl. Hersongs prove this, and her ban-ter does, too. ("I was talkingto a boy on McDougal Street. He had on a Bob Dylan hat,a Beatle haircut and a BobGibson vest and he said he waspreserving his originality.")

Except for a stirring rendi-tion of "Nobody Knows YouWhen You're Down and Out,"Gale sang only her material, which, although too frequentlystressing the same theme, isalways moving. Her "Sleep YouNow" and "Sometimes YouHave to Let Somebody Down"are especially strong and, ofcourse, "We'll Sing in the Sun-shine" is delightful.

Preceding Gale on the billis an outstanding new comedyteam, the Uncalled For Three, whose forte is slapstick hilarity. The fellows could probablytrace their ancestry to the RitzBrothers, the Three Stoogesand the Marx Brothers. Andthis reviewer would not saythey are any less good. They

pile corny joke on corny jokeon corny situation at break-neck and startlingly professionalpace. If they get lost in theentertainment shuffle, a majorcrime will have been perpe-trated.

The opener for the eveningis Mike Settle, also an RCAroster member. The lad playsfolk-rock with enough energyfor a crowd and makes awfullyinfectious music.

NASHVILLE - Possibly thebest way to tell when an artisthas "arrived" is by the wayother artists copy his style and/or sound, and according to DaveDudley, popular country andWestern singer and Mercuryartist, "This is the greatest com-pliment any fellow artist canpay to another."

Dave was interviewed afterhis office and home receivedmany calls asking if Dave wasrecording under another name. But Dave assures us he is not. When Dave hit big in 1963 with"Six Days On the Road," thenew, unique sound of the "shot-gun" guitar was born and hehas used the sound on recordand personals ever since and itwas "only natural" that otherswould use the sound and thatlabels would start looking forartists that sing close to hisstyle.

One particular record that isout now sounds so much likeDave his mother and dadthought it was he until theycalled.

Dave is pleased that his styleshould be used by other artists, but he does want to assure allcountry and Western fans andDJs that he only records forMercury under the name of DaveDudley.

NASHVILLE

REPORT

BY ED HAMILTON

Big Doings On Recording SceneSchool bells are ringing . . . things are really swinging! In

other words, the recording business here is great!Over at RCA Victor studios September is shaping up as a

mighty big month. Smash's Jerry Lee Lewis finished up analbum there last week under the direction of Shelby Singletonand Jerry Kennedy. Musicor's Pappy Daily and Tommy Jacksonare bringing in Gene Pitney and Melba Montgomery for someduet sessions! Hickory's Wesley Rose has a few dates set inthe studios for the early part of the month. And, of course,Chester Atkins, Bob Ferguson, Felton Jarvis and Mary Lynchhave their work all cut out for them this month. PorterWagoner just finished a gospel album with the BlackwoodBrothers, his first for Victor. The Anita Kerr Singers are setto do a gospel album, their first also for Victor. LovelyDottie West has an album session scheduled and GeorgeHamilton IV, John D. Loudermilk and Bobby Bare have singledates set for this week.

The happiest guy, though, has got to be RCA's Felton Q.Jarvis! He's waiting for lovely Ann -Margret to finish a movieon the Coast and come to Music City for a series of recordingdates!

Over at Fred Foster's Sound Studios Bill Porter and TommyStrong are keeping pretty busy also. Already set for the earlydays of this month are Monument artists Demetriss Tapp,Harlan Howard and Jimmy Driftwood. They're also doing aMercury session on Troy & Donna and a Diamond session onRonnie Dove. It looks as though Bill may have engineered an-other No. 1 record with Dolly Parton on Monument. Her"Happy, Happy Birthday, Baby" has that No. 1 sound all overit! This is the little gal's first record and it's taking off likeGemini -5!

Columbia and Starday Studios have a full schedule of record-ing sessions. In fact, they're both so busy we couldn't beginto list everyone that's coming in to record. So you see . . .

business is great in Music City!* * *

The Los Angeles Rams were in town last week for an ex-hibition game with the Chicago Bears, and it gave defensivelineman Roosevelt Grier a chance to visit his other place ofemployment, RIC Records. He got together with Dean Mathis, one of Hickory's Newbeats, to run over a few new songs. Theybecame close friends while appearing on television's "Hull-abaloo," "Shindig" and "Where The Action Is." Quite a com-bination, these two. Roosevelt is 6' 8", 285 pounds and Dean is4' 11", 122 pounds!

Joe Wright who heads up the talent agency of the same namehere is now handling Sheb Wooley, Claude Gray, Hal Willis,Bill Carlise, Bill Brock, Bobby Sykes, Bill Wilbourn and KathyMorrison, Jack Eubanks and Pat Campbell. Bill and Kathy havea fine new record out on United Artists that seems to be catch-ing on with the jocks around the country.

RCA Victor's Skeeter Davis was booked for the Labor DayTop 40 show at Ponchatrain Beach in New Orleans. The showincluded many top music personalities whose records were inthe Top 40. Skeeter's record of "Sunglasses" is really tearingthat category of the music business wide open!

John Talley, national sales and promo guy for RIC, finallyadmits he made a booboo! They were working on the wrongside of the new Wayne Walker record. Seems like the jocksaround the country just weren't ready for "The Message" side, although it's great. John says reports are coming in heavy on"When Passion Calls." Looks like Fluffo may have one!

The hit sound goin' around this part of the country is thenew George Jones/Gene Pitney single of "Big Job." Terrificperformances on a great new Hank Mills song.

Every now and then a real sleeper comes along. One suchrecord is that of the Country Gentlemen on the Rebel label. It's a real eerie thing called "Bringing Mary Home." It's onfire here, and from what we hear in several other markets also.
