in the hands, Wendy says. "Exercising with balls and weight helps because they have to grip." Wear closed-toe, lace-up shoes with heel support, plenty of room for your toes to move, and a groove between front and back for flexibility. Make sure there's enough tread on the soles to prevent slipping. Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing is essential. Bring a closed container of water; a light jacket or sweater if you tend to get chilled in air-conditioned spaces; perhaps a small fruit or cereal bar for emergency snacking. Weights and other equipment are provided by the instructors. Woodville bonus: A social group called the OWLs has hatched from the exercise class. New participants are welcome. The OWLs organize local outings once a month.

M i n d f u l M o ve m e n t ( L a ke J a c k s o n ) Instructor Lori Roberts describes Mindful Movement as "a joyful class that promotes health and well-being through movement and music. It incorporates the arts of yoga, Tai Chi, ballet, aerobics and many other styles to activate small and large muscle groups from head to toe."

continued from page 2 It's a great class for those with limitations such as Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, arthritis, and back and knee problems because it is non-impact and adaptable to individual needs and abilities. Q: I asked to be put on the Do Not Call list, but I still get a lot of phone calls I don’t want -- and now they have my cell phone number, too! A lot of these calls are from my area code, so I worry whether I should answer them, and I don’t want to be rude. What can I do?

A: The Do Not Call list stops honest sales callers. Illegal callers using sophisticated technology continue to hammer landlines and cell phones with unwanted sales calls,

scams, and threats. All these calls have just one goal: to talk you into revealing your personal information so that they can steal your money. There’s no way – yet – to stop all these calls. Many people simply don’t answer if they don’t recognize what they see on caller ID. But caller ID information can be faked, a tactic called “spoofing,” says Denishia Sword, Bureau Chief for Education, Advocacy, and Research with the Division of Consumer Services, Florida Department of Financial Services. “Don't trust the caller ID,” she says. “it may look like the call is from a legitimate person, such as your neighbor. I received a call that appeared to be from my own phone number!” If you answer a call and you think it may be legitimate – from your credit card company, for example –hang up and call using a number you know is legitimate, such as the customer service number on the back of your credit card. If you answer a call and you suspect it’s a scam, just hang up. Don’t say a word; your voice can be recorded and used to fake a sales agreement, especially if you say the word “Yes.” Remind yourself that these callers are out to do you harm. "All they want is your credit card number, Social Security number, or other personal information," Denishia says. “Scam artists know that seniors are a lot more polite, and they play on your emotions. There's no harm in hanging up the phone. It's okay to be rude to avoid being the victim of a scam.” To add your landline, cell phone, or both to the Do Not Call list, visit www.donotcall.gov or call 1-888-382-1222 from the phone you want to register (TTY: 1-866-290-4236).

Direct your questions to the Senior Resources Coordinator by calling 891-4043.

To talk on the phone with Bradfordville Lunch & Learn regular Margaret Diesner is to make an instant friend. "I laugh a lot," she says. "I laugh with my friends, and I keep them laughing." When Margaret moved to Tallahassee in 2010, the only people she knew were her daughter, son-in-law, and grandson. At her daughter's suggestion, Margaret started attending Good Shepherd Catholic Church, where she joined several social and service organizations. Now she has "dear, dear friends – the kind you have in your home town," she says. "I met almost all of my friends at church. I'm always busy." A native of Erie, Pennsylvania, Margaret was the second of four children. Hers was a big Italian family. "Everybody lived near everybody -- cousins, aunts, uncles. In those days, even your neighbors were like family. If you had leftovers, you'd open up the window and ask the neighbor if they'd like some." She married young, and she and her first husband parted after 14 years of marriage. She found herself a single mom with three sons and a daughter. Margaret got a job at the bank where she had worked before she got married. Those were not easy times, but her faith helped her through. "I went to church almost every morning before work to make sure God was on my side," she recalls. The years went by. Margaret remarried. Her children grew up, and all of them eventually moved to Florida to seek better jobs. In 1989 she and her husband moved to Orlando. She retired in 1996, but she got bored, so she went to work for

the school district and for the YMCA. "Those were the best years,” she says. "I missed my calling." She worked with all ages, at every level from 6-month-old babies to middle schoolers. In 2007, when she was 74, she retired again to take care of her husband. After he died, she moved to Tallahassee, which she loves. She has 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; the 16th is due on Halloween. "I enjoy every single day," she says. "We all have our little maladies, but I'm still vertical and able to do a lot of things. That alone makes me happy."
