OSHA 29 CFR 1910.151 Medical Services and First Aid - General IndustryThe standard serves general industry and requires first aid supplies to be readily available. OSHA states in Appendix Athat the contents of kits listed in ANSI Z308.1-2003 should be adequate for small worksites. OSHA also recommendsthat employers determine the need for additional kits and supplies for larger worksites or when multiple operations areconducted at the same worksite.

1910.151(a) - The employer shall ensure the readyavailability of medical personnel for advice and consul-tation on matters of plant health.

Employers must seek advice from medicalprofessionals such as, the local emergency room,fire/rescue or physician to ensure that their first aidprogram is adequate.

1910.151(b) - In the absence of an infirmary, clinic, orhospital in near proximity to the workplace which is usedfor the treatment of all injured employees, a person orpersons shall be adequately trained to render first aid.Adequate first aid supplies shall be readily available.

First aid supplies should be located in an easily accessible area. Use the 3-4 minute rule to get first aidsupplies to the scene. The employer also needs to assessthe particular needs of the workplace and tailor first aid kitsand their placement to the particular needs of the work-place. Advice as stated above may be helpful.

1910.151(c) - Where the eyes or body of any person maybe exposed to injurious corrosive materials, suitable facili-ties for quick drenching or flushing of the eyes and bodyshall be provided within the work area for immediateemergency use.

It is the employer’s responsibility to assess the particular conditions to determine the suitable eyewash station required and that it provides suitable protection against caustic chemicals to whichthe employees may be exposed.
