Spring 2017 Picture Book Drive Let’s give Lepholisa Primary School in Lesotho, Africa a wonderful library! The inspiration… SCBWI PAL member Sarah Hammond gave her stepdaughter, Maggie Shiflett, the picture book Wherever You Go by Pat Zietlow Miller as a graduation gift. The little book joined Maggie on her travels as a Peace Corps volunteer to teach English in an African school. It found a fascinated audience in Lesotho, a landlocked country in South Africa. A boy visited Maggie and asked her some questions about it (see photo above): He pointed to the boats, trains, and oceans in the illustrations. "Madam, what is these?" He noticed the animals driving cars. "Madam, how do the animals know how to drive?" As Maggie’s students do not have many opportunities to foster creative thinking, one of her goals is to give them a space to explore artistic expression. She suggested a book drive. After all, what better place to start than with books? A story is a wonderful thing. How can I help? Donate a picture book. The pupils (Grades 1 – 7) are learning English as a foreign language.
