It’s the week we’ve been waiting for all year, the Sturgis 75th! If atten-dance approaches estimates, this rally will be the largest event ever held in the state of South Dakota!

Ever! But vacation or not, who doesn’t want to get the most from their hard-earned dollars? That’s why the Sturgis Rider Daily is kicking off the 75th Anni-versary Sturgis Rally by helping you maxi-mize your cash, so when you head home with the memory of a lifetime you still have gas money to get there.

Like you, we respect the people who perpetuated the Sturgis Rally through the decades and appreciate the worldwide phenomenon it has become. But our job is to help you enjoy your holiday in the Black Hills right now, so let’s get it on!

• See the Seattle Cossacks, Budweiser Clydesdales and Field of Flags at the free-access Buffalo Chip CrossRoads. Bikini Bike Wash, stunt performers and bike shows happen daily. Find drink specials, too, like two Bowtie Buds or two Big Woodys—this year’s signature drink— for $6.

• The Rally Information Center at the Cross-Roads Chamber of Commerce will fill your sad-dlebags with maps, guides and giveaways of all sorts—including pins, cozies, T-shirts and more

just for stopping by. Stop here early and grab some freebies while the goodie stack is piled high! If the weather turns wet you can likely cop a GEICO rain poncho, too.

• Free blue jeans? Yes, indeed! Wrangler Jeans is offering a free pair of jeans to every pre-registered

rider of both the Legends Ride on Mon-day, August 3, and the Freedom Cele-bration Ride on Thursday, August 6th. That’s a big deal: you’ll earn back the ride donation even before you reap all the other benefits of these signature events. Register online to participate at www.BuffaloChip.com.

• The lucky person who goes home with a custom Victory Gunner and matching Epiphone guitar will snag the biggest bargain at the Sturgis 75th, hands down. The good news is: it could be you! Enter free at www.BuffaloChip.com, stop in at the CrossRoads Rally Information Center, or visit any one of dozens of participating Rider Friendly™ Businesses (listing at BuffaloChip.com.)

• See stunning one-off customs built by both industry celebs and up-and-coming protégés at the Buffalo Chip’s Motorcycles As Art exhibit curated by Michael Lichter. Located in the Russ Brown Event Center, enter at the east gate of the Chip for free admission

throughout the rally to this stellar collection of cus-tom bikes. This show is a knock-out!

cross the entryway for the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum’s mini exhibit featuring the Motor Maids, one of the first and longest-lived women’s motor-cycling groups in the country. Those girls blazed a trail!

• Speaking of the Museum, five people can visit the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame for $30 – it’s usually $10 per person. Ride down

memory lane in the “My First Ride” exhibit and learn about the Sturgis Rally’s origins. Open 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM through the rally, at the corner of Main and Junction.

• Don’t miss Moto Marc Lacourciere’s work adjacent to the Museum’s display. You’ll recognize Marc’s images of rock and roll icons along with his Legend Rider Series. Marc supports the Chip’s signature Legends Ride, donating a fine art print every year to the auction. Go to MotorMarcArt.com and MusicFineArt.com to view his work. The exhibit is free.

• The Cycle Source Annual Chopper Show on Wednesday, August 5, has zero entry fee; it’s free! Ride in and enter your bike in any of 15 classes to a win hand-crafted metal trophy and other prizes from industry sponsors. Register by noon, awards at 5:00.

• If Evel Knievel’s exploits made you jump your fam-ily’s trash cans on your Sting-ray bicycle you have to see the Evel Knievel Collection at the Buffalo Chip Cross-Roads. This huge collection of authentic EK memora-bilia, never before seen in its entirety, includes Evel’s

performance leathers, actual X-rays of his broken bones, original jump bikes and helmets plus Big Red, Evel’s iconic Mack truck fully restored just weeks ago. See it all for only 10 bucks, August 1-8. Tickets at www.buffalochip.com/EVENTS/Evel-Knievel-Thrill-Show.

• Free Fuel Happy Hours take place at the CrossRoads from 1:00 to 4:00 PM Sunday, August 2 through Thursday, August 6. The Renewable Fuels Association will top off your tank with 93 octane E10. All you need is a Buffalo Chip wrist-band… and your bike, of course.

• Win collectible Buffalo Chip merch when you discover “Where’s Woody” in this very newspaper you’re holding. Each day Woody is tucked into a photo of an event he especially recommends. The first three to report the find to the Rally Informa-tion Center at the CrossRoads win. And save this paper all 8 days! Hand-delivered to Chip campers

and available regionally, it will help you make the most of your Rally vacation. A complete set could become a 75th Rally collectible!

• Need a break? The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) is manning a rider oasis at the CrossRoads. Stop in to recharge and learn about the many benefits of AMA membership, including roadside assistance. It’s one of the best bargains in motorcycling!

• Maybe it’s true that well-behaved bikers sel-dom make history but if you and your rowdy friends can follow direc-tion for about an hour you can be part of the

Human Eagle Montage in the Field of Flags at the CrossRoads. Turn up to participate in this awe-some unique form of performance art Thursday, August 6 starting at 1:00 PM and make history—for free!

• Free Pancake Breakfast! That’s right: FREE! Get up early to bless the karma that brings us all together here in the Black Hills while you enjoy coffee

and pancakes compliments of the Sons of Light Ministry. A mainstay for years, breakfast is served from 7:00 to 11:00 AM August 1 through 8 at the free-access Buffalo Chip CrossRoads.

• On Tuesday, August 4, celebrate the old iron at the first ever Indian & Classic American Iron Rally at the Buffalo Chip CrossRoads. Admission is free for field games and a bike show that welcomes Indians of any year and other machines 1984 and older. Starts at 9:00 AM with awards at 4:00 PM.

• When you buy a Rats Hole Mug, your first fill-up is free. After that it’s just $6 a pop all week

long for a BIG 34 oz. draft. Get yours at the Rats Hole Bar in the Buffalo Chip Amphitheatre. And don’t forget the Rat’s Hole Bike Show on Thursday at the CrossRoads. See the most off the hook cus-toms on the planet.

• Join BAM and rest assured that if and when you need roadside assistance, there’s someone to lend a hand. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys’ national network has kept riders safe for 30 years. Sign up free at www.russbrown.com or at one of their booths during the rally. BAM members can also enter to win a Top Shelf fan experience for John Fogarty’s Wednesday concert at the Buffalo Chip.

• Participate in the Photo Scavenger Hunt sponsored by Roadsmith Trikes to earn point toward prizes. Find the photo list at facebook.com/Road-smithTrikes and sign up at

www.buffalochip.com. Ends Wednesday, August 6.• While you’re snapping pictures, have a friend

take one of you with Miss Chippie, in the Buffalo Chip Amphitheater. It’ll mage a great souvenir – just get in line and pose!

• Stop in at the Mad Vapes/Electra Vapor Lounge near the Buffalo Chip Amphitheatre to try out the latest vape hardware and e-liquids. Whether you’re camping for the week of visiting for one special concert, you’re welcome.

• It’s one dollar dogs and drafts at Woody’s Watering Hole inside the Chip Amphitheatre every day. Just one of the many ways Chipsters save a buck while they party on.

You’re saving so much why not treat yourself to zipline or helicopter rides, race tickets at the Powersports complex, or one of the Chip’s signature charity rides? Go ahead; the Sturgis 75th only happens once!

Wow! Seventy-five!. Technology and communi-cation have changed. But two wheels and freedom is what I think matters to a biker. It’s the passion that will have Doug Danger attempt a world record jump on Evel Knievel’s stock 1972 XR-750, that keeps the Seattle Cossacks on vintage 1940s H-Ds, that joins owners of even older Indians at American Iron Magazine’s® ride-in show and that created the 35 bikes built for the 2015 Motorcycles As Art™ Exhibit, “The Naked Truth”.

The highest level of communication is eyeball to eyeball contact. It happens at a rally. The Chip, now the world’s most connected community with a repeater every 300 feet, also permits high qual-ity commercial Wi-Fi service from every inch of the campground. Stay at the Chip and stay in touch via phone, email and social media.

We don’t abandon the basics, though. The Chip is proud to also inform through its Buf-falo Chip Gazette® and Sturgis Rider News®. The 100,000 copies of this free souvenir print pub-lication were again scooped up the instant they were made available.

2014 saw a blend of print and satellite technol-ogy at the Chip, too. The Chip’s staff reports every day’s events in its Sturgis Rider® Daily. Wi-Fi carries the articles to the printer before 2 a.m. and a truck delivers each morning’s paper at 5:30 a.m. on the same day. Get it at your campsite or at the Chip’s Chamber of Commerce alongside the Big Engine and look for a photo of yourself at last night’s party.

There’s an entire crew dedicated to making your stay as enjoyable and memorable as possible. Com-

munication is key. You’re our friends and we love having you here. We do our best to inform and to stay in touch. Let us hear from you and, through-out the year, know that we wish you continue to…

In 1985 or ‘86 Crazy George painted a sign that looked just like this and we put it up here. The DOT came out and took it from us, and gave us a big lecture for faking signs!

Whether you’re at the Buffalo Chip for a head-liner concert, visiting the Crossroads to enter a bike show, or camped out for the entire rally, there are things to know that’ll make your stay—short or long—just plain better.

• Getting Connected: New this year, the Chip and West River Television Company bring easy, reliable Wi-Fi service to the 75th Rally. Choose “RallyWiFi4U” when it pops up on your device, choose a plan, then forget it.

• Getting Oriented: See the Essentials Guide at: www.buffalochip.com/NEWS-INFO/Essentials-Guide or pick up a copy of the handy, pocket-sized booklet at the Rally Info Center at the Crossroads. It has a pull-out, full-color map to get you ori-ented plus phone numbers, tips, tricks and more. That’s why it’s called the Essentials Guide.

• Getting Around: when it comes to getting to the Chip and getting back out, there’s help. See the map at: www.buffalochip.com/NEWS-INFO/Maps - and also in the Essentials Guide. We want you to have rip-roaring good fun, not sit roasting in traffic.

• Getting Informed: The Buffalo Chip Gazette/Sturgis Rider News has all the inside info, not only

about the Chip but all around the Black Hills. Copies are available from Rapid to Spearfish and point further flung.

• Getting The News: Keep reading this paper every day. The daily itin-erary on page 2 will nar-row down the choices for you with staff recommen-dations, and we’ll be your memory, reminding you of the don’t-miss events each and every morning.

• Getting Everything In: Find the Best Party Anywhere™ Checklist in this issue of the Daily and keep it handy. It’ll help you keep track of everything you have to do to make your 75th Rally vacation complete. You might want to take it home, too, to help restore your memories once the fog of the Best Party Anywhere™ clears up.

To rock fans in the 1970s, Alice Coo-per’s shows were the wildest and most shocking around — wild out-fits, fake blood, dead babies, stream-ing mascara, and alleged chicken-

head biting. To his good friend Groucho Marx, it was psy-

chedelic vaudeville.“One of the best compliments I ever got was

when Groucho said that ‘Alice Cooper is one of the last hopes of vaudeville,’” Cooper said. “He saw the sense of humor to it.”

That psychedelic vaudeville act makes its way to Sturgis motorcycle rally again this year when Cooper headlines the Buffalo Chip concerts at 10:30 p.m. today.

Cooper, born Vincent Furnier, was the front-man of the glam and hard rock group of the same name in the early 1970s before legally changing his name to “Alice Cooper” and going solo.

With the band, Cooper recorded hard rock radio staples such as “I’m Eighteen,” “School’s Out” and “No More Mr. Nice Guy.” His solo career has its own highlights, including “Wel-come to My Nightmare” and “Poison.”

Cooper said that his signature style was put together from a variety of disparate sources, not unlike Frankenstein’s monster.

“It’s a style of rock ‘n’ roll borrowed from the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s, with a little bit or Broadway and creature features put together,” Cooper said. “If you mix all of that together, you get Alice Cooper.”

But as exciting as the records are, they trans-form when coupled with his outlandish stage show, which has included props like a guillotine (complete with a fake execution), a giant Fran-kenstein monster and boa constrictors.

“I feel that if we sing ‘Welcome to My Night-mare,’ you don’t just say it, you give them the nightmare,” Cooper said. “If the song is called ‘Feed My Frankenstein,’ there should be a big

50-foot Frankenstein. Bands that stand there and look at their feet are not fair to their audience.”

Cooper has also noted his belief that a number of modern rock groups have abandoned melody and energy, but he had some recommendations for groups he felt were giving their A-game.

“There’s this band called The Strikes, from Ireland, and they sound like The Yardbirds, like they could have been around in 1965,” Cooper said. “Everyone I know who knows them, from Eric Clapton to Jeff Beck, is like, ‘Where did these guys come from?’”

Cooper also praised Five Finger Death Punch, who will play before his show at 8:30 p.m., along with Green Day and The Foo Fighters.

“It’s totally unlike anything else,” Cooper said of the crowds at the Buffalo Chip. “They rev their engines at the end of the show, and that’s a sound you don’t forget. And they’re not listening to The Carpenters or something, they’re there to rock.”

On stage, Cooper won’t play himself so much as he plays Alice Cooper, Rock God and Monster.

“It’s fun to play somebody that you’re noth-ing like,” Cooper said. “I got up and played golf this morning. Tonight, I play this villain who won’t talk to anyone, even the band. But that’s just a character, and the audience wants that character.”

Cooper talked more about his old friend, film and comedy icon Groucho Marx, who fel-low shock rocker and filmmaker Rob Zombie is making a movie about. He said that the the-atrical nature of the show impressed not only Groucho, but a number of his old Hollywood and vaudeville friends.

“Groucho brought Jack Benny, George Burns, Mae West and Fred Astaire,” Cooper said. “And they’re watching all these dismembered baby dolls and blood spurting, unfazed. The audience is going, ‘This is insane!’ The vaudevillians went, ‘This is cool.’”

The Buffalo Chip’s ubiquitous Rod “Woody” Woodruff loves to meet campers. He roams far and wide at the Chip, so keep your eyes peeled for his smiling face and say hello. And if you want to win classic Chip merch, also look for Woody in the pages of the Sturgis Rider Daily. Each day there’s a different Woody caricature hidden in a photo of an event or location he especially recommends. The first three campers or visitors who report their find to the Chamber of Commerce/Rally Info Cen-ter at the Chip Crossroads win a prize. And don’t forget to take note of where Woody is hiding out, because that’s definitely the place to be.

When you gather hundreds of thousands of people in one small town, it’s a given that the local infrastructure will be taxed beyond capability. An example? Sturgis, South Dakota during the 75th anniversary rally, of course. But staying connected has become a necessity in the 21st Century so what to do?

Fortunately for campers at the Buffalo Chip, West River Television Company offers no worries WiFi with brand new state-of-the-art RallyLink service. Similar to some hotels, when you open your device—laptop, tablet or phone—it searches for available networks. When “RallyWiFi4U”

pops up click on it, choose your plan and enter your credit card number. Done!

Reed Metzger, general manager of West River says that this new, super strong service is state-of-the-art, with broad coverage that’s superior to any installation they’ve handled to date. Fiber-wired repeaters are placed every 300 feet throughout the Buffalo Chip, far exceeding most municipali-ties that only have hot spots of connectivity in select common areas. In fact, at this moment Buf-falo Chip is the most comprehensively wired city, end to end, in the United States!

Metzger credits the partnerships his company

formed with Sisco who provided the hardware and CCI Systems, the company that designed the network. West River has spare equipment on site just in case and in the event of user technical diffi-culties, a staffed booth is located near the west box office till midweek. That’s reassuring!

West River offers daily or weekly plans and in terms of reliability the service has been engineered to exceed the number of users. Especially in cer-tain areas such as the Chip’s amphitheater, there’s enhanced capability in recognition of the concen-tration of potential users there. That area features high-density wireless deployment focused on spe-

cific antennas to create the best experience for users. No matter how many people are at the con-cert, you can still post to Instagram or Facebook knowing the network will support it.

The benefit of West River’s service compared to using data on your mobile plan is the one-time charge. Most mobile providers have a data cap and charge per gig. Your RallyLink plan also works for any two devices – that’s like a 50% discount if two people each use one device.

So don’t ruin your vacation at the Sturgis 75th with worries over connectedness. Get signed up early and forget it!

Stay connected at the chiPthe most wired city in the uSa!

Get your ticket now for the oppor-tunity to meet the builders rep-resented in the most respected custom motorcycle show in bik-ing, Motorcycles As Art. At this

exclusive viewing of the 2015 show, curated by Michael Lichter. You’ll have the chance to meet the likes of Billy Lane, Brian Klock, Roland Sands, Brian Fuller, Jim Nasi, Ken Nagai, Paul Cox, Paul Yaffe, Shinya Kimura and more! Each builder will be set up by his bike to sign autographs and join you for pictures.

It happens tomorrow, Sunday morning, August 2, at the Buffalo Chip’s Russ Brown Event Center and is open to everyone, camper or not. Tickets, which are $20, are limited to allow guests time to visit with builders, so don’t wait. Go to www.buffalochip.com

Breakfast begins at 9:30 and a silent auction is included featuring select items from after-

market companies such as Corbin, 5-Ball Rac-ing Leathers, Revere Seats, Kicker Audio and H-D Footwear. Many will be autographed by the builders. Expect special surprise guests, too.

And you can feel extra good about attend-ing because proceeds benefit the Buffalo Chip’s Technical Education Scholarship Fund. Said Chip President Rod Woodruff, “The fund’s intent is to bring new talent into motorcycling by reaching out to young people seeking career paths and military veterans returning to private industry.”

So go online and get your ticket to join Woody, Michael, 30+ builders and special sur-prise guests. This is your one chance to get the inside scoop directly from the builders them-selves on the one-off customs built exclusively for the 75th Rally Show – and take home the kind of souvenirs no one else will have!

See you at The Flying Piston Breakfast Ben-efit on Sunday morn-ing, August 2, at the Buffalo Chip’s Russ Brown Event Center. Day of event tickets based on availability.

Some say that form follows func-tion but at the 2015 Motorcycles As Art Exhibit,

form defines function. That’s because every bike in this year’s show, the sev-enth consecutive one at the Buffalo Chip’s Russ Brown Event Center, is naked; no paint, no metal finishes, no graphics. All 30+ custom machines are completely unembellished and open to scrutiny.

That theme was dictated by the show’s cura-tor, renowned photographer Michael Lichter.

It’s an example of talent laid bare, showing every weld and every bend in the metal, with the build-er’s unadulterated handiwork on display for all to see. “Ninety nine percent of reaction to a custom bike is to the paint and finishing,” said Lichter. “Without those dis-tractions you can see the craft, the welds and the details.”

The tag line for the show: “35 Customs / 35 Years / Motorcycles Exposed” is a reference to Lichter’s own connection to motorcycling; he’s been working in the industry for more than 35 years. So it’s appropriate that the motorcycles are displayed in a gallery setting.

The bikes are on pedestals for opti-mal viewing, sur-rounded by more than 100 of Lich-ter’s framed photo-graphs that time-line the decades he’s spent shooting bik-ers and bikes. Some images are being shown for the very

first time and all are portrayed precisely as shot, without retouching or enhancement.

Said Buffalo Chip President Rod Wood-ruff, “Michael’s expertise and knowledge of motorcycle culture makes him the per-fect person to curate the Motorcycles as Art exhibits at the Chip. We are honored to host his “Naked Truth” exhibition this year.”

As in the past, the exhibit is in the Buffalo Chip’s Russ Brown Events Center; entrance is at the East Gate. It is open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, August 1 through Friday, August 7. Admission is free — and the exhibit space is air-conditioned!

Join us to reclaim a rally tradition of gathering together custom builders and fans to mix and meet. All proceeds go to scholarships for returning vets and next gen industry participants. That’s a win/win.

Each year, the concept of Motorcycles As Art changes and so do the builders. These four bikes from this year’s show are perfectly tuned to the “naked” theme allowing builders to show their metal fab talents.

Kick off the week with the screaming fast action of 85 mph quads tangling for position and get-ting air at the Buffalo Chip Powersports Com-plex (PSC.) These ATV powerhouse machines and their professional drivers shred the track as they battle for points in this national series race that draws riders from across the country to compete.

Practice ran all day Friday and racing com-mences today, Saturday August 1, staring in the morning and wrapping up by 7:00 PM. It’s a full day of rapid fire racing as about 20 classes, includ-ing both male and female riders from ages 6 to 70, take the track. Explained race organizer Bob Loshbaugh, the machines are production framed but otherwise have highly modified engines and

suspension components. “Most of these quads can get up to 60 mph as fast as the TORC trucks do,” he said. “We almost double the manufacturer’s horsepower!”

When asked to vote for the best overall track and facility of the 2014 season, last year’s racers and EDT officials chose the Buffalo Chip Pow-erSports Complex as their hands-down favorite. Come see what all the excitement is about! Tickets are available for $20 at the gate or ahead of time for less online at www.buffalochip.com.

A new partnership between the Buffalo Chip and Kuryakyn is destined to benefit touring riders worldwide. Both brands are recognized by riders everywhere so their alliance raises visibility across the board while present-ing Kuryakyn’s broad product line to the riders who want and need it most.

Kuryakyn has lately been developing dozens new products for the dresser market, buffered by their sleek Bahn line of custom parts and Crusher per-formance exhaust systems. They’re quickly approaching go-to status among riders for bolt-ons, performance parts, lighting solutions and so much more.

Said Kuryakyn’s V.P. of Brand Management Steve Veltri, “When a bike owner sees a cool part on a bike and thinks, ‘I would love to have that on my bike,’ we’d like the next thought to be, ‘I bet Kuryakyn has it.’ ”

Watch for Kuryakyn to have a strong presence at the Chip, bringing along Bahn custom products and Crusher exhaust, too. Jim Nasi’s Bahn-enhanced custom bike will be on the Chip’s main stage Thursday night, along with the builder himself and Kuryakyn reps, tossing out plenty of branded product to the crowd.

As a company determined to offer bike owners fresh ideas and tons of choices to individualize their bikes, Kuryakyn states their mission succinctly, saying: innovation is manufactured at the intersection of performance and style. And now that intersection meets riders on the biggest stage in the industry, at the Buffalo Chip.

If you’ve got a hidden talent or a competi-tive streak, the Buffalo Chip is the desti-nation at the end of your journey! Why? Because in addition to world-class con-certs, legendary rides, badass bike shows,

and mind-boggling motorsports events, the Chip plays host to a huge variety of crazy-fun con-tests—and we’ve added some doozies this year. It doesn’t matter if pickle lickin’ is your thing or you can burp your ABCs; the Chip’s got a contest you can enter and win!

Check the daily Showcase Schedules for loca-tions and times.

• Because many of the contestants are wearing bikinis, Bikini Beach is homes to the sexiest con-tests at the Chip. There’s Ultimate Rope Swing, Beers & Burps, Frozen T-shirt and Homemade Bikini, to name a few. All week long!

• This is one of the new ones! The Air Sex Championships take place at both Bikini Beach inside the Chip and the Jagermeister stage at the Crossroads. Host Chris Trew, agitates, instigates and, er, moderates as audience members vie for recognition. It’s one of the wackiest shows you’ll ever see – or participate in. Recommended prepa-ration: have a Big Woody or two before you take the stage.

• The Sturgis Rider Sweepstakes is the best contest at the 75th. All you do is enter for a free chance to win a Cory-Ness Victory Gunner and matching Epiphone guitar. How? Buffalochip.com or the Rally Info Center at the Crossroads.

• Fan Fest, the social media meet & greet at the CrossRoads on Sunday, August 2, is the place for these zany contests: Cherry Pie Eating, Fake Orgasm, Best Beard, Arm Wrestling, Stud Contest and Beer Belly. Winners can score zipline tickets, a Chip-themed Epiphone guitar and 2016 passes.

• The Sassy & Classy Over 35 Model Search gives a nod to ladies who’ve still got it. The winner parties like a VIP and everyone else gets an eyeful of some of the prettiest ladies at the Chip. Hap-pens Wednesday.

• Go online to enter the Chip Shots Photo

Contest and Fan Video Contest. Email your best shots matching specific themes to [email protected]. Winners are featured on the website and win prizes.

• Try the Midnight Endurance Ride near the Old Barn Restaurant . How long can you last? Staying power will make you a winner.

• Burn it up every night at the new Jagermeister Steel Bridge near the amphitheater to be crowned king (or queen) of the burnouts. Count on noise, smoke and ripping good fun.

• If profiling for glory and prizes is your game, there’s a Bike Show every day at the CrossRoads. Some are free ride-ins and others require a small registration fee. Most are sponsored by industry magazines so in addition to awards and goodies your bike just may be “discovered” by an editor!

• World Federation Pickle Lickin’ contests hap-pen at the Kinison Stage every day at 5:00 PM with the Chip’s own Hank Rotten. Show off your skills and take home some cold cash plus a souve-nir jar of Woody Gerkins.

• The lovely Miss Buffalo Chip Contestants take the Wolfman Jack stage every night after the headliner. What’s the prize? Getting to watch a parade of the hottest biker babes on the planet every night of the week.

DO I HAVE A CASE?We field calls regularly from motorcyclists

who ask: “Do I have a case?” The answer to this question is not always what you might think. One motorcyclist went down after a dog

ran into the path of his bike. He sustained personal injuries and property damage. He was reluctant to contact a lawyer thinking that there was nothing to get from a dog. Our investigation established that the dog had a history of running into the street to chase vehicles and the dog’s owner was responsible for not controlling his pet. Another rider was legally passing vehicles

stopped at a light. As he approached the front of the line, a driver made a U-turn directly into him knocking him into the opposing lane. The investigating police officer concluded that the motorcyclist caused the accident. But we were able to track down a key eyewitness, proving the rider’s version was true. So the best advice is to always consult

with a lawyer experienced in the field. If someone says your case is not worth pursuing, get a second or even a third opinion. We have successfully prosecuted many cases that others lawyers have rejected.

Brilliant Black Hills RidesThere’s no shortage of roads or destinationsThanks to GSP, you don’t need directions to

find a compelling ride in the Black Hills. Go out and hang a left if that’s your style or take one of these suggestions to see some captivating country. And remember, you don’t have to do it all right now. Pick out one or two then save the others for next year, when traffic will be way lighter and the road less traveled will be at your disposal.

DeadwoodHwy 385 is a two-lane black top that carves

through the Black Hills National Forest leading to the gold mining town of Deadwood. With the look and feel of an authentic wild west town, complete with casinos, saloons, and rustic store-fronts, Deadwood offers good food and eclectic shopping. Don’t miss the No. 10 Saloon where Wild Bill Hickok met his demise holding the dead man’s hand, aces and 8’s.

Spearfish CanyonAlt. Route 14 through Spearfish Canyon, which

can be accessed off I-90 exits 10 or 14, is without question one of the best 22 miles you can travel on two wheels. It’s the quintessential scenic road

adorned with steep cliffs cut through the gorge, bubbling streams, waterfalls and striking vistas at every turn. Go at sunrise to beat the traffic and make the most of this beautiful part of the world. Scenes from the film Dances With Wolves were filmed here, and you’ll see why.

Bear ButteThough it’s not a ride of much distance, Bear

Butte is a quiet respite amid the frenzy. With it’s prominent peak rising above the horizon it’s easy to find—if fact, you can’t miss it. This has long been a sacred place and ceremonial gathering spot to the Native American Nations. Chiefs Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull and Red Cloud met here. Cruise past grazing buffalo to the visitor’s cen-ter where Native American history is abundant. Then trek higher on to the 4,426-foot summit for a four-state view over the lake you won’t believe. And all with in a few miles of town.

Iron Mountain RoadPart of the Peter Norbeck National Sce-

nic Byway, US 16A, also known as Iron Moun-tain Road, is a scenic roadway near Custer. It offers spectacular views of Mount Rushmore and includes three granite rock tunnels to pass through

– always a different experience on a motorcycle instead of a cage. You’ll also travel over three pig-tail bridges, which are corkscrew structures engi-neered to curl and pass over themselves for a chal-lenging ride and an upper body workout. This is no superslab sprint! Iron Mountain Road leads to Mount Rushmore.

Mount RushmoreYou don’t have to go into Mt. Rushmore

National Memorial to see the sculpture; it eas-ily viewed from route 244 as you snake along the ridge. But it’s well worth the admission to learn the history behind the monument and the park is beautifully designed to make the visitor’s expe-rience a delight. The ride there is east and south of Sturgis and loops through Black Hills National Forest on Hwy 16/Hwy 16A to the tiny town of Rushmore, and can easily be configured to include Crazy Horse.

Needles HighwayLeaving Rushmore, you can take Hwy 16A

back or continue the journey on the famed Nee-dles Highway. A must-do for every rider’s bucket list it’s usually a super crowded route. It’s a chal-lenging ride, too, with sharp turns and numerous

switchbacks. The best advice for the Sturgis 75th might be to leave Needles Highway till next year.

Crazy HorseThe monumental sculpture of Crazy Horse

has been in progress since 1948. Way larger than Mount Rushmore, it’s quite a site even in its unfinished state and the visitor’s center is not only stunning architecturally but packed with Native American and regional history, too. Highway 385 north will take you back toward Spearfish.

Custer State ParkCuster State Park was established as South

Dakota’s first park. Its 71,000 acres are home to herds of Buffalo that often quite literally stop traf-fic. Custer Park is home to the Governor’s annual buffalo round-up and art festival. Riding there on 385 and 16 through Black Hills National Forest isn’t a quick ride but it’s a pretty one, and it passes through the biker friendly town of Hill City where you can stop for a burger or some ice cream.

Devil’s TowerStanding 1,000 feet tall across a vast plain, you

can all but see Devils Tower from I-90 but you probably want to take the long way. You’re here to ride, right? That would be route 34 W to Wyo-ming 24 W and 110 W through Hulett—an inter-esting stop, too. It’s about 75 miles from Sturgis to this geological natural wonder.

Badlands National ParkYes, it’s called the Badlands but there’s nothing

more exquisite than watching the waves of rock change color with the late-day light. You’d swear those rocky spires were about to ignite. We’re talk-ing about terrain that is millions of years old and far too vast to imagine, even while you’re in the midst of it. It’s a good 90 minutes east of Sturgis even taking the fast way, but well worth seeing. Stop at Wall Drug, too.

Hot SpringsIf you’re looking for a longer trek, Hot Springs,

SD, a.k.a. The Mammoth Site, is further south than Custer. In Hot Springs you’ll find rugged canyons, mineral springs and fossilized mam-moth treasure at the world’s largest Columbian mammoth exhibit and research center. 385 takes you most of the way; 79 through Rapid City is a slightly shorter option.

Lose something?Check the Chip’s Lost & Found

Each year, people lose things at the Buffalo Chip. It just happens. The good news is, each year people also find things at the Buffalo Chip. If you find yourself on either side of this equation, here’s the best plan: if you lose or find something pre-cious, take it to the security hut by the west box office or right to the nice ladies in the main office at the Chip, just to the left of the west box office. The item in question will be catalogued and Chip staff will get the word out on social media sites pronto. Ditto for items that are MIA.

These are some of the remnants from last year. Not shown are items we didn’t feel compelled to hang on to. Like what? Lots of clothing, with skiv-vies topping the list; one Dick & Jane’s Naughty Club card; eyeglasses, lots of them; brand new Buffalo Chip condoms (oops); an iPod Shuf-fle; one inflatable sheep; and a 2003 Dyna Wide Glide… yes, really.

If anything looks familiar and you camped at the Chip last year, you know what to do. And a word to the wise: unlock your phone so the finder can track down the keeper, right?

To the staff of the Buffalo Chip there’s no one more important than you, the person read-ing this paper. That’s been true since Woody first invited bikers to camp in his pasture after they were tossed out of City Park in 1982. But this year, your presence is especially vital because several of the Rally’s piv-otal events will only succeed if you participate.

So pick at least one and come to the free-access CrossRoads to make his-tory during the historic 75th Rally. These events are open to all visitors in the Black Hills for the Stur-gis Rally.

• “Eagle 75” is a combination of performance art and community statement that results in a massive human eagle montage composed completely of bikers and their motorcycles. Presented in the Chip’s Field of Flags, riders will form a huge eagle in flight over the Black Hills to honor veterans and protect clean water for South Dakota. Artist John Q has managed dozens of these happenings. See exam-ples at www.spectralQ.com/gallery then be part of an historic Sturgis 75th event the likes of which

will never happen again. All it takes is your time on Thursday, Aug. 6: Bikes start forming at 1 p.m. and when the Freedom Ride joins in at 3 you’ll all be immortalized for posterity. Be there!

• On Wednesday at 9 a.m. join other rally-goers at the Crossroads for the Big Woody

Panty Party, a Guinness World Record attempt to gather the most people

in their under-wear in one place!

Get out of your pajamas and into your skivvies then

join hundreds of (un)equally attired

friends for live music, drink specials, and the offi-

cial photograph to document the feat. The standing record is 2,270; we can beat that! But not without you.

Shy? We recommend a Big Woody first… we refer to this year’s signature drink of the Chip’s 75th celebration. Big Woodys are 2 for $6 at the

Crossroads Bar.• Bike Shows happen every day, all week long

and they really rock when tons of bike owners bring their machines to compete. We can’t predict who will win because judges are unpredictable, but going home with a 75th anniversary trophy would be so cool. You can’t win if you don’t enter. See today’s front page story for details.
