Our Mission

The Canadian Cancer Society is a national, community-based organization of volunteers,

whose mission is the eradication of cancer and the enhancement

of the quality of life of people living with cancer.

Research: Making progress

1938: 1 in 5 cancer patients recovered

2000:1 in 2 cancer patients is likely to survive

Research: Making a difference

• More than 50% of people diagnosed with cancer today will survive

• Death rates for childhood cancers have fallen by more than 50% since 1950s

• Overall death rates for all cancers declined by 12% in men between 1988 and 2000

• Overall cancer death rates for women, with exception of lung cancer, have declined by 15% since 1974

Canadian Cancer Society:• is the largest charitable funder of cancer

research in Canada through the National Cancer Institute of Canada; invested over $48 million in 2004-2005

• supports more than 100 scientific research studies in Ontario each year

• supports more than 90 clinical trials across the province to test new diagnostic and treatment options

Research: In Action2004/2005 the Cancer Society funded research across Ontario:– 124 research projects– 88 clinical trials– 8 clinical trials in Credit Valley

Some areas of Progress:

• Know more about why cancer starts and then spreads

• Know more about the importance of early detection

• Developed new drugs & and technologies for more effective treatment

• Starving tumours by cutting their blood supply

• Helping the body’s immune system destroy cancer cells

• Using viruses to treat cancer• Developing more precise tests• Making radiation therapy smarter• Killing tumours with light

Transportation

Our volunteer drivers:

• provide rides for people who need help getting to and from their cancer-related appointments

• offer caring support along the way

Transportation in Mississauga

In 2004/2005 our volunteer drivers:

• Provided 16,679 trips• To 671 adults, 12 children and

170 escorts• Driving 241,211 km

Support at cancer centres, lodges, and community hospitals

• our volunteers support people living with cancer in regional cancer centres, and local hospitals

• lodges provide patients a comfortable, supportive place to stay while

receiving treatment

Volunteer opportunities
