Definition: The total integration of Computer Aided Design, Manufacturing and other business operations.
CIM In Industry In the educational world, CIM is used for:
Train and give perspective for industrial world. Demonstrate and give hands-on experience with
Complex, Interdisciplinary and Hierarchical systems. Provide solid environment for projects.

Real-time communication: Commands and status reports.
Communication design goals: Define effective language. Focus on “what to do” not “how to do”.Implementation: TCP/IP messages.
6
Simulation
Simulation is essential in both industry and in education. Benefits of simulation include:
In Industry: Improve productivity. Test what if scenarios.
In Education: Explain scope of problem by demonstrations of
different CIM cells. Improve lab usability. Advanced research.
7
Simulation in OpenCIM
OpenCIM includes three different types of simulations:
Full Simulation. Device drivers simulation. Mixed mode simulation.
8
OpenCIM is Open
Open systems: Mechanical, Electronics and Software.
Support for 3rd party machines, robots, parts delivery or QA systems.
Support for integrating user code in the open CIM system:
Add new Device drivers. Replacing parts of the manager: Optimization
Integrating 3rd party, or users program, with OpenCIM- (Oracle ERP )
9
Oracle ERP & OpenCIM Integration
The Oracle ERP-OpenCIM interface combines Oracle’s E-Business Suite, a complete set of business applications, with OpenCIM
For OpenCIM users: Expand the ERP capabilities. For Oracle users: See the effect of ERP in a real
manufacturing environment.bridge the gap between the manager’s desktop and the
manufacturing shopfloor. It includes: Oracle e-Business Suite. A sample set of fictitious companies. A demo application for a specific OpenCIM factory.

Oracle ERP & OpenCIM Integration continued
The Oracle ERP-OpenCIM Interface integrate of the two systems in the following manner:
OpenCIM: sends factory layout and machines definitions to Oracle.
Oracle: maintains customer, supplier, storage and BOM data; executes MRP; sends manufacturing order to OpenCIM.
OpenCIM: receives manufacturing order from Oracle and executes it through the CIM Manager (on-line or in simulation mode).
OpenCIM: sends status reports to Oracle. Oracle: receives status reports; updates storage
data; outputs various reports.

Optimization & Performance Analyses Optimization solves the complex issue of balancing
time, cost and quality. Optimization is controlled by:
Hardware setup Part definition Order entry Scheduling, dispatching and machine queue
Run time Optimization and Performance analysis. Implementing new optimization algorithms in user
code, and use them with the Optimization and Performance analysis tools
