Monroe Doctrine: Americans were worried about the actions of
European nations especially Spain regaining its lost colonies in
South America 1823 President Monroe issues a foreign policy
statement to Congress (written by his Sec. of State John Quincy
Adams) known as the Monroe Doctrine warning: Europe shall not
regain control of newly independent Latin American nations US would
oppose ANY attempt to build new colonies in the Americas England
supports the US because it does not want other European nations to
control Latin America ** Monroe Doctrine would shape American
foreign policy for the next 100 years!
