5. Chair’s Report
The Chair introduced Gord Schoberg, Chair, Board of Governors, and Chair of the Presidential Search
Advisory Committee (PSAC). Mr. Schoberg reported that a decision was made by PSAC at the
December 2, 2011 meeting to adjust the search process schedule. This is due to a potential revision of
the position by the ministry. An approximate 6 week delay is anticipated and will not affect current
candidates. PSAC is hopeful that the original deadline for completing the search will remain as
targeted for June or July 2012. The ministry has been made aware that the timing of their decision
has implications on the presidential search timelines.
6. New Faculty Update
Report on the new Faculty was presented, including actions taken to date. A web site will be available
early in 2012. The timeline for the implementation of the new Faculty may be revised as necessary.
7. Board Senate Task Force on Bicameral Governance (No Report)
8. Senate Executive Committee (No Report)
9. Senate Standing Committee on the University Budget (No Report)
The committee is in the process of hearing presentations from deans and service areas regarding
budget requests.
10. Senate Governance Committee
10.1 Senate Standing Committee Membership/Mandate Review
In consultation with the members of senate standing committees, a review of committee
mandates and memberships has been completed. It was noted that at the inception of Senate in
2008, the mandate and membership of already established committees was not altered
significantly.
Principle revisions include streamlined wording, timing for election of members, time periods for
service, minimum number of Senators per committee and the addition of the Vice Chair of Senate
as ex‐officio to all standing committees. The Senate Standing Committee on Policy Articulation
has decided that the name will change to the Senate Standing Committee on Policy Review.
It was agreed that all standing committee membership/mandates should contain a set of standard
operating principles.
Moved by Ken Hughes, seconded by Cathy MacDonald THAT Senate approve the revised
memberships and mandates for the Senate Standing Committees as follows:

Moved by Dana Cserepes, seconded by Art Coren that Senate approve the revised mandate and
membership of the Senate Standing Committee on Tributes. MOTION CARRIED
ACTION: Senators are asked to provide feedback by email to the Vice Chair.
ACTION: The Vice Chair will incorporate feedback and guiding principles into each of the standing
committee mandates and memberships for review at the individual standing committees, and the
item will return to Senate in January 2012.
ACTION: The Chair of the Senate Standing Committee on Governance will notify Senators of the
date for the next Governance meeting.
10.2 – Election for New Senators
Senate discussed the impact the dissolution of the Faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences and
the creation of a new Faculty will have on the upcoming Senate elections for positions with terms
ending on August 31, 2011. Currently there are 4 positions which will become 2.
Concern over the loss of 2 Senate positions due to the creation of a new Faculty was raised. Noted
that Senate positions represent the university as a whole, and are not specific to a given Faculty.
10. Senate Nominating Committee
Moved by Mary Androsiuk, seconded by Dana Cserepes THAT Senate approve the following as
members of Senate Standing Committees:
Senate Standing Committee on Tributes – Amandah Hoogbruin, Faculty of Community and Health

14. Senate Standing Committee on the Library
It was noted that the library has had issues with students conducting research, which can potentially
harass students using the library for study purposes. There is now a policy in place for conducting
research in the library.

15.1 Academic Schedule 2012/2013
Senate reviewed 2 options presented for the 2012/2013 academic schedule. A new statutory
holiday (BC Family Day) will be introduced in February 2013 and the implications on the reading
break for Spring semester were discussed.
Version 1 of the schedule would involve a holiday Monday, followed by 2 days of classes, followed
by 2 days of reading break. Version 2 would allow for a straight 5 day break (including the
weekend and the new statutory holiday falling on the subsequent Monday).
Moved by Bob Second Wendy Royal THAT Senate approve Version 2 of the Academic Schedule.

PROPOSAL
To add a Mechanical Certificate option. This additional Certificate option will incorporate and combine the most effective courses from the Manufacturing and Industrial Certificate options. The Mechanical Certificate will replace both the existing Industrial and Manufacturing Certificates. This Mechanical stream is not a new program, however will offer students an option within our existing program streams and current credentials.
RATIONALE
RATIONALE
The Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) industry is changing rapidly due to developments in technology as well as unstable economic conditions. As a result, CADD graduates need to be able to respond to these changes by having a broader skill set. Currently the CADD Technology Program offers Architectural, Structural, Industrial and Manufacturing specialties. The specialty courses are taken the second semester. Enrollment in Industrial and Manufacturing has been low in previous years, and we believe the cause is based on the lack of understanding of the terms Industrial and Manufacturing as a discipline. The CADD department often receives requests for Mechanical courses.

The word ‘Mechanical’ is a higher level moniker which embraces both the Manufacturing and Industrial areas of CADD. The proposed Certificate in Mechanical CADD would give students a broader skill set while still delivering the expertise required for both the Manufacturing and Industrial CADD fields. This broader skill set will increase the students’ opportunities for employment. The Certificate in Manufacturing CADD, and the Certificate in Industrial CADD will still remain on the books for students who wish to challenge those Certificates through PLA only.
BACKGROUND
The original Full Program Proposal (FPP) for the CADD Diploma program was approved by Education Council in September 2006 and implemented in September 2007. During the development of the framework and the Full Program Proposal (FPP) we took the opportunity to accomplish several goals:
1. To update the name of the program from Drafting to Computer Aided Design and Drafting
(CADD)Technologies. 2. To move from a vocational teaching model and transcript to an undergraduate teaching model and
transcript. 3. To develop a second year Diploma stream. 4. To offer training in several CADD Specialty areas (Architectural, Civil, Electrical, Industrial,
Manufacturing and Structural). 5. To create a separate Program Advisory Committee (PAC) for each Specialty area to include what
industry required for the current job market.
APPROVALS AND SUPPORT March 18, 2011 – CADD Department (approved) October 5, 2011 Faculty of Trades and Technology – Curriculum Committee (approved) October 13, 2011 CADD Technologies Program Advisory Committee (supported, please see attached support letter) October 21, 2011 Faculty Council – Faculty of Trades and Technology (must be sent and vetted to AP&P for approval not CurrCom) November 9, 2011 Faculty of Trades and Technology – Academic Planning and Priorities Committee (approved) ADMISSIONS At this point there has only been one communication with the Office of the Registrar. Please see email excerpt below in italic. They feel that we could not accept applications for this Specialty until March of 2012, for implementation of January, 2013. However, as this is not a new Program, but only a new stream (second semester) within the current Program, that we should be able to allow students to complete a “Program Status Change” form and enter into their second semester in the Summer 2012 semester. In addition, many students who have already completed other specialties are interested in the Mechanical stream as an additional specialty to add to their dossier. The CADD department also sees interest from current CORE (first semester) students. In addition, in order to meet the current Industry demand and current mega projects currently underway, we would not be supporting those Industry needs or aiding the students desires to enter into those fields.

If the application and implementation dates remain as stated from the Office of the Registrar, the CADD Technologies Program will offer the four courses that would make up the Mechanical Specialty in Summer 2012 in order to meet the increasingly demand of CADD students with the skills that are outlined in the four courses. Email from Zena Mitchell – October 25, 2011 New programs cannot be implemented during an application cycle that is already open. The implementation date should be for a future intake that has not yet started accepting applications. The soonest this program could be launched would therefore be Spring (Jan) 2013 (which would mean we would open up applications starting March 1, 2012). For current students who complete the necessary requirements in advance of Jan 2013, we could potentially award credentials sooner (i.e. after all necessary Senate approvals are in place). Subject Revision to Admission Requirements for Bachelor of Design in Product Design
Admissions Requirements
RATIONALE
Selective Entry programs in the Faculty of Design require students to meet
Kwantlen’s General University requirements along with Program Admission
Requirements:
1. English 12 with a minimum grade of B (or equivalent)
2. Portfolio: Applicants are asked to select 12-15 varied examples of their
work showing different aspects of their design skills and interests
3. Design Exercise and Interview (Only for applicants selected after their
portfolio review)
The Full Program Proposal submitted in August 2010 and approved in
January 2011 did not include the portfolio and design exercise and
interview requirements. This amendment is designed to clarify the
admissions criteria for all applicants for the Bachelors in Design in Product
Design.
IMPLICATIONS The selection of applicants for the Bachelor of Design in Product Design
requires a three-step evaluation to ensure the selection of qualified
candidates for the degree. Further, the program has limited-enrolment
given space and resource constraints for equipment and technology.
The Portfolio Review and Interview provides the faculty with information on
the students, their design interests, ideas and educational objectives.
Without the inclusion of the portfolio and interview process, the information
available for the selection of applicants is incomplete.
Design programs have an above average retention rate (90% or higher)
compared to the Kwantlen institutional average of 50%. In part, their
successful progression through the degree can be attributed to the
selection criteria for admission to current selective-entry programs.
