EUMETSAT POLAR SYSTEM

Kept in its nominal mid-morning sun synchronous orbit at 817km altitude as part of the EUMETSAT Polar System (EPS)

JASON-2 (66° incl.)

OCEAN SURFACE TOPOGRAPHYKept in its nominal non-synchronous low Earth orbit at 1,336km altitude, in support of the Ocean Surface Topography Mission.

METEOSAT-7 (57.5° EAST)

INDIAN OCEAN DATA COVERAGEOperated in support of the Indian Ocean Data Coverage (IODC) mission, bridging an observational gap in this region

METEOSAT-8 (3.5° EAST)

METEOSAT FULL DISC IMAGERYBack-up Meteosat full disk service over the European continent, Africa and parts of the Atlantic and Indian oceans.(IODC TBD)

METEOSAT-9 (9.5° EAST)

RAPID SCANNING SERVICE (RSS)Positioned at 9.5° East delivering the Rapid Scanning Service (RSS) over Europe and adjacent seas.

EUMETSAT Climate Monitoring Activities: How & Who

Climate Monitoring Implementation Plan Prioritised Secretariat’s activities

Dependence on external funding e.g. From European Union Satellite Application Facility (SAF) on Climate Monitoring &

contributions from other SAFs SAF federated activities, reprocessing coordination

Activities embedded in/articulated with cooperative projects WMO GSICS and SCOPE-CM projects EU FP-7 Projects: CORE-CLIMAX, ERACLIM 1/2, QA4ECV, ESA CCI

CEOS-CGMS Working Group Climate), 5-7 March 2014, Darmstadt, Germany

Scope of EUMETSAT Climate Monitoring Activities

Re-calibration and cross calibration of historical data (GSICS, SCOPE-CM)

Production of Fundamental Climate Data Records; Production of Thematic Climate Data Records (QA4ECV); Delivery to users/projects with documentation, support to

scientific validation; Support to international projects (ERA-CLIM 1/2, SCOPE-CM) Development of methods for maturity/quality/capacity

assessment (CORE-CLIMAX, QA4ECV) International coordination: WMO, architecture, CEOS-CGMS
