2LEVEL K / SPRING LESSON

The first step in God’s Master Plan is Passover.A very long time ago, the Israelites were slaves in

Egypt. You might remember this story from our lastLesson. God freed the Israelites from slavery and suffer-ing. But there is much more to the story than that.

Moses was chosen by God to lead the children of Israelfrom slavery. Moses and his brother, Aaron, went toPharaoh and informed him of God’s demands. Pharaoh didnot listen, so God sent many plagues on Egypt. There werea total of ten horrible plagues on Egypt. The tenth plaguewas the worst. It was the death of every firstborn child inEgypt. This included men, women, boys, girls and even ani-mals. This is how the Passover came into existence.

In order to protect the Israelites, God told Moses tocommand all the families of Israel to kill and roast a per-fect male lamb that night. They were to take the blood ofthe lamb and paint it on the doorposts of their homes. The death angel that was going to kill the firstborn ofeverything in Egypt would see the blood of the lambs onthe doors and PASS OVER the houses of the Israelites.God commanded that a remembrance of this occasionbe kept forever. This lamb was a type of Jesus Christ, who came to earth and died for all of our sins. Thewages of sin is death, similar to the death angel inEgypt. If we did not have Jesus Christ’s sacrifice, wewould all be sentencedto eternal death. Wehave been forgiven ofour sins. This allows usthe opportunity toreceive eternal life.

On the evening ofPassover, your parentsand all the baptizedadults in the Churchobserve Passover serv-ice. This is a verysolemn and sober serv-ice. They wash eachother’s feet as a symbolof humility. This attitudeof service is very impor-

tant. Just as Jesus Christ served us, so should we serveeach other.

Then after a minister reads a number of important scrip-tures and says a prayer, brethren eat a small piece ofunleavened bread. This bread is a symbol of Jesus’ bro-ken body. Then brethren drink a very small glass of wine. This pictures Jesus’ shed blood. Everyone sings a closinghymn and then leaves quietly.

The second step in God’s Plan is a week-long festivalcalled The Days of Unleavened Bread. This festival is

observed by not eating food that has leavening in it. Godcommands that all leavened products be taken out of ourhomes. This means that before these days arrive we mustclean our houses and cars very carefully to make sure weremove all the leavening. Leavening is the substance thatmakes bread, cake and many other things rise while bak-ing. Examples of leavening are baking soda, baking pow-der and yeast. All the foods that contain these ingredientsmust be removed and thrown away.

After the Israelites were spared the tenth plague of thedeath angel, Pharaoh made them leave quickly. They had

to make unleavened bread (flat bread) for the journeybecause they did not have time to let the bread rise.

This first observance of this feast was because of phys-ical necessity. But God wants us to keep this feast bothphysically and spiritually. Leaven puffs things up. God

wants us to be reminded of how sin can puff us up. Weare commanded to eat unleavened bread every day ofthe feast to make sure we remain flat, or humble. Be sureto be humble and giving during this time. Be sure to shareand do things for others. Remember this when you keepthe Days of Unleavened Bread every year.

The third Festival in God’s Plan is the Day of Pentecost. This day literally means “Count Fifty” in the Hebrew lan-guage. It is kept on the 50th day from (starting with) the

CIRCLE the breads that are are “puffed-up” or soft. We must remove these from ourhomes before the Days of Unleavened Bread. COLOR the foods that we can eat dur-ing the Days of Unleavened Bread. (You may ask your parents for help.)

Sunday during the Days of Unleavened Bread. Pentecostis also known by the name “Feast of Firstfruits.”

Jesus Christ was killed on Passover day. He was in atomb for three days and three nights. Then He was resur-rected and went to heaven to sit on the right side of Godthe Father. Fifty days later, on Pentecost, God sent HisHoly Spirit to the disciples. The Holy Spirit is also knownas the comforter. It was seen as tongues of fire sitting onthe heads of the people gathered on that day. This mayhave seemed strange. But the Holy Spirit is the power ofGod, and it helps man overcome sin. It also helps us tounderstand God’s truth and plan of salvation.

When a grown person wants to be in God’s Church andrepents of sin, he or she is baptized and receives theHoly Spirit at that time. Baptized members are the“Firstfruits.” They are the first few that God will add to Hisfamily. But, this does not mean we are more importantthan anyone else.

When Christ returns and sets up the kingdom of Godon earth, the Firstfruits will assist Him in ruling the plan-et. They will be kings. This is when God will begin to calleveryone to learn of His way of life.
