world’s population will be infected– 1968-like pandemic; 2 to 7.5 million deaths– 1918-like pandemic; 180-360 million deaths– Even if a 1918-like pandemic occurs today, 98
out of 100 of us will still be alive at the end.
Pandemic Response Planning

• Why train on pandemic response?– Over the last several years, a highly virulent new
strain of avian flu (H5N1) has become endemic in the poultry population in Southeast Asia.
– This particular flu strain causes significant mortality (~50%) in humans that have been infected.
– The World Health Organization (WHO) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have since expressed major concern about the potential for this virus to mutate into a form that could cause a global pandemic outbreak of human disease.
