EACH DECADE

A 10 TB data center in 2001 growing at 60% YoY will be a 120 petabyte data center by 2021—but IT budgets remain flat

Content Creation Drives Next Decade File data and data sharing: increasingly reasons for deployment

• Shift toward user-created, unstructured data– Secondary storage is the

new primary storage

• File-based storage raises major management issue– Online ingest of and

access to large volumes of content

FLASH 1st with FAST

“With the combination of the FAST tiering functionality within the VNX and the CTA tiering/archive migration tiering tool, EMC has introduced a tiering architecture that embraces the complete storage hierarchy from SSD to cloud. The potential contribution of such a capability to improving storage economics is obvious.”

Capitalize on Public Cloud

What data is a fit for public cloud?– Cold user home directory data: documents, images, and music– Inactive projects, source code, development– Backup images

How do I secure data in public cloud?– Encryption ensures data is protected

How do I lower OpEx with public cloud?– Compression reduces bandwidth and space charged for in public cloud

How It WorksARCHIVING

1. Cloud Tiering Appliance scans the source storage through CIFS or NFS to find files that meet a policy

2. When files match a policy, they are written to the destination tier

3. Once file is committed to archive, a small stub is left on the primary share/export

RETRIEVAL

1. Client requests moved file

2. Stub contains metadata with location of file

3. The file is recalled through CIFS or NFS from a share or export

End User and Application Transparency

• Files are still visible and can be quickly recalled• No need to re-train users or modify applications• Backup and anti-virus processes need not be changed

Cloud Tiering Appliance has allowed us to tier to Atmos cloud from our unified storage, freeing space on our unified storage and making backups more manageable. The best part is that, with the retrieval speed, the medical staff has no idea their files have been archived. It’s just business as usual…
